Great picture quality and pricing info.......2007-06-13
This is one of the few carpet books available that isn't a decade old. The picture quality and pricing information is great. Indian carpets make up 50% of the new carpet section with the rest being from Turkey, Pakistan, China, and other regions. What is missing in this section is any mention or pictures of contemporary carpets from Iran. The antique carpet section has a broad selection of carpets from all appropriate regions--including Iran. There is also around 10 pages of information on rug care and cleaning, knot count, new maching made carpets, buying carpets overseas, and judging antique carpet condition. Overall, great book!
oriental rugs.......2006-11-10
the information is broad, and the information excellent in terms of what to look for in rugs, hand made vs machine and the consumer base was detailed.
VERY weak for the price.......2006-03-20
little or no technical explanation of each carpet, just page after page of blurry, low-color pictures, and no grouping of any kind. junk.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-11
Of the half dozen books on oriental carpets I have, this is far and away the best. While most books on the subject are often somewhat snobbish in their approach, this book is refreshingly realistic and inclusive. And this is comment is from someone who enjoys buying and selling oriental carpets and rugs.

Outstanding.......2004-07-26

Review.......2007-01-11
This book has really helped me increase my knowledge and ability to recognize different kinds of rugs in a dealer's showroom. There are good color photographs, many diagrams about motifs and descriptions of features that rugs from various locales have. I keep going back to the book and re-reading things I didn't pick up before. It is definitely a buyers' guide.
Consider this book a VERY basic introduction only.......2003-06-21
If you are interested in buying a book to learn just the basics of Oriental Rugs in a short time span, this book is just fine. The content is good, and there are about 20 pages of glossy pictures showing different designs of rugs.
If your intention is to buy a book which will help you really understand the nuances of Oriental rugs, you need to look elsewhere. I gave the book an average rating, because that's what it is - not a great reference, but also not a bad value for the money. Just a decent book conveying about what you'd expect from a 100 page introductory text.
Plentiful information for novices.......2003-01-29
I found this book a useful text for beginners. It provides organized information without being overly complex and boring. One benefit of the book is that occasionally when the author makes reference to an item explained in detail elsewhere in the text, a page number is given so the reader can jump to the detailed description if necessary. It's the 1980's version of hyperlinks. The color plates are beautiful, but lack descriptions of the sizes of the rugs. Also lacking is the pronunciation guide; A basic guide exists, but falls short by lacking pronunciations for all but one or two words. I was also hoping to read a discussion of the varrying lengths of rug fringes, which this book did not discuss. A final benefit of the book is the last chapter on the major and minor weaving groups. These sections provide a good source of reference when one needs to get quick, basic information about a particular group.
Great Help for Beginners in Oriental Rugs.......2000-01-06
If you have recently been bitten by the Oriental Rug bug, here is a down to earth book for to help you through the complicated names of regions and styles. The author gives everything you need to know without overwhelming you with a subject and a trade hundreds of years old. Moreover, the pictures are a great visual aid for showing examples of rugs mentioned in a well written text. This book will make easier your understanding of the subject and get you off to a good start to an enjoyable pursuit.
A Must For Collectors.......1998-07-20
As said in the synopsis - this is a book on available rugs not ones gracing the walls of museums or showing up in the big auction houses for 30 000 bucks. As a rug dealer, I use his books as a bible (perhaps Quran would be more appropriate!) and they have never let me down. As I tell my customers... before you invest a 1000 dollars on a rug, invest 15 dollars to learn more about them. You will be amazed at how carpet dealers will drop their prices as soon as you show even a small amount of knowledge. Best series by far. Enjoy.

Chris Richter.......2005-05-18
Wired is a beautifully produced book from cover to cover. This extraordinary art form is depicted eloquently in text and photos and is the perfect addition to any art book collector's library. I found Mr. Arment's historic representation of the craft to be informative and the featured artisan weaver's stories to be both compelling and personal. The contemporary design, exquisite photography and high quality of production contribute to an outstanding book.
Beautiful book, great information!.......2005-04-13
This is an extremely high quality "art book" which will be at home on any coffee table or in any library of people interested in baskets, Africa or any indigenous arts and crafts. The photographs are outstanding, the paper weight feels wonderful in your hand, it's a very well produced volume. I especially enjoyed the introduction by Paul Mikula which gave a great context for how difficult the baskets are to weave and spoke to the history of the weaving from more of the standpoint of the Zulu people. I have been carrying these types of baskets for over 3 years now and there has been a big void in the world for information on these baskets. This book fills the void plus some! Thanks to the authors for a great information source!
I LOVE This Book.......2005-04-10
I just got a copy of this book and it is extraordinary!!! I travel to South Africa frequently and have several telephone wire baskets. I often wondered who made these baskets, and how they were connected to traditional African baskets and crafts. Well, this book answers my questions and more. The history is well written, including a GREAT foreword by Karel Nel, THE expert on South African art. In addition, the book gives the artist's their due, highlighting 14 weavers (or should I say artists), with their personal story and images of their work. I can now identify baskets in my collection, some by these weavers. This is a book you will love.
Great New Book on Zulu Telephone Wire.......2005-04-10
This is a great book on the Zulu art of making baskets out of colorful telephone wire. Not only is this a fascinating collection of images that jump off the pages, but it gives this art form its due. The use of wire in sub-Saharan Africa is explained and adds some historic context to this contemporary art form. The development of this form by the pioneers of the craft - the true night watchmen, is also documented here for the first time. The book also highlights the masters of this art form, with some personal history and images of each person's work. This is a highly recommended addition to you collection of books on African Art.
Gorgeous and Important Reference Work.......2005-04-06
This book documents a marvelously vital art form and is itself a beautiful work of art. It is obviously expensively produced and carefully executed. The jacket, the cover , the paper, everything about it is absolutely first rate. An informative and very entertaining documentation of this fascinating art form. The photography by Andrew Cerino and the well known interiors photographer Peter Vitale is brilliant and voluptous (the color reproduction is astonishing).
I couldn't be happier with it and I think it will soon be a very valuable and much sought-after reference source.

Customer Reviews:
I Have Used This Book For YEARS!.......2006-03-24
This book has been around FOREVER and continues to be updated. Over the years, I have probably given away at LEAST 20 copies of this book to parents of toddlers. It is the BEST book out there for creative, imaginative fun for kids that can only help them to be smart, smart adults.
I couldn't believe the reviews that stated that this was for "unimaginative"adults! I am as creative as they come and I was amazed at some of the neat, terrific and educational ideas that the authors came up with. That said, there are a few activities that I thought were a little "out there" so I skipped those activities, but everyone is different. Trust me, this book leads the way in creative play!
Inappropriate choice of materials for a book aimed at age two+.......2005-08-18
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of four not be given nuts, popcorn, or raisins, due to the risk of choking. Therefore, it seems rather inappropriate to include these ingredients in recipes and craft activities in a book aimed at children "age two years and up." Here are just a few examples of activities from this book that use such ingredients:
- Grandma's Granola (Activity 171) contains both nuts and raisins
- Popcorn Packaging (Activity 74) contains popcorn
- Cereal Balls (Activity 51) contain raisins.
Creative Play .......2005-07-06
This book was not quite what I expected. There are some good ideas and some truly idiotic ones as well. I'm not sure if the good outweighs the bad.
For the Extremely Dull and Uncreative Parents Out There.......2005-06-12
One of the ideas for creative play the authors offer is to find a hill and roll down it. Or if that doesn't knock your socks off find a trail of ants and watch them marching by! If your child needs you and a book to come up with these play ideas seek professional help... now!
Your children will love the activities in this book.......2001-10-26
There are 13 different types of activities. They are Art, Construction, Craft, Dance, Education, Environment, Foods and Cooking, Games, Horticulture, Make-Believe, Music and Nature. It gives you tips for your child's safety and enjoyment. The book also lists a variety of materials and supplies you might need for that activity.
