Summertime and the livin' ain't easy

School's finally out, and eleven-year-old Mitch Valentine is ready to get started on his extensive list of things to do with his best friend - until his mom ruins everything with a surprise announcement. The family is going to take a long trip halfway across the country, to stay with her family down South. Mitch's reluctant summer visit to sweltering farm country tests him in all sorts of ways, starting with his sense of humor. Pitkin, Louisiana, turns out to be a place filled with challenges and dangers, from rope burns to raging bulls.

In this vivid and funny first novel, Mitch discovers that it's his own bad decisions that can make for the biggest challenges and dangers of all.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Marcum as a 5th grade teacher as well, in 1996. He was a great teacher and a great writer. He would read us this book a lot and gave us valid input with it - he made sure kids were going to like it! It was written for, edited by, and inspired by kids.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-06-04

I also had Mr. Marcum as a teacher in 2002. I read this book three time while i was in the class, and brought chapters home for my dad to read and he loved it. I think ths could easily be the best book I have ever read. I read the complete version before it was published, so i hope they have not edited out some of the best parts. Go buy this book or order it here, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun.......2005-05-24

Memories of my childhood flooded back as I read this wonderful book. Lance Marcum has written a book that kids of all ages can enjoy. His main character's (Mitch Valentine) first person account of his summertime adventures is pure kid fun from start to finish! Although "The Cottonmouth Club" is a real "page turner", it took me longer than expected to read due to my LOL fits, which erupted with nearly every page! Girls and boys, men and women, this book has something for everyone, and to top it off teaches some valuable life lessons. Read it, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read.......2005-05-18

I was also blessed to have Mr. Marcum as a 6th grade teacher back in 2002. For a couple weeks, he read his book to us for an hour each day. After he was done, I was absolutely amazed by the time and effort he had put into it; and it shows. He even brought in his drafts to show us how much time and effort was involved...it consisted of 4 boxes stacked to the top filled with pages marked with red writing. This book is a piece of art. A kids book, a teenagers book, an adult book, this book is entertaining and humerous for anyone who reads it. Honestly the best book I have ever read... would make a very good movie.

Book Description

Edgy and ironic, Clint Catalyst exposes the underside of all his many subjects - gay relationships, backwater adolescence, and spiraling addiction. Whether he's writing about a chance sexual encounter at a Goth club called Lilith ("Some New Kind of Kick") or revealing the inner thoughts of young hustlers in Hollywood ("Metaphor, and Remorse"), Catalyst unearths the trashy truth in his characters' unconventional lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Profound and Beautiful.......2007-08-04

"Don't judge a book by its cover!" they scream as I hang my head in shame. Once again I have proven to myself how narrow minded and judgmental I can be. This brilliant little book is packed full of surprises especially for those who have developed some preconceived notion as to what it's about. Starting with the title which, now that I know what it means, I think is brilliant. I was picturing two pot heads making out with a sort of latte-esque foam covering their mouths which I'm sure is exactly what the author wanted me to believe. Then turning past the table of contents I came upon the explanation of the title and was immediately transported back to my youth in Florida and my fear of the tall grass. I won't say more about that in order not to ruin this very pleasant little surprise for others.

Then the first story "Some new kind of kick" is pretty much exactly what I was expecting. A very dark and seedy tale of Goth clubs, speed and sex, although one thing I didn't expect was to really like it. Something about the way Clint Catalyst casts his penetrating stare into this so called "Goth" scene is so incredibly revealing of not just the Goth scene, but any scene that's gotten old and tired. And it's in this first story that I began to realize that the scenes and the players are all the same. It doesn't matter what scene you were in, because we all got tired and we all ended up alone. The scenes all lacked something, or as the author so eloquently points out, we ourselves lacked something in ourselves that our "scenes" or distractions could not replace; well, not for long anyway.

So I guess it's clear that I'm not a "Goth". And while I did think they were cute in the mid eighties when they were still known affectionately as "Death Rockers" I've never been into things "Goth". I've also never been into speed of any sort. Of course I've done speed and had so called "Speed Sex" which contrary to the name takes hours, but I've never been into the whole "gak" experience if you know what I mean. So despite hearing the rave reviews of "Cottonmouth Kisses" I put off actually reading it, thinking it was fifty percent Goth and fifty percent homoerotic speed induced sex. Not my cup of tea exactly.

But from that first story Clint Catalyst just blew me away. His insight into moms, wanna-bees, punks, straight boys, art school girls, alleged bisexuals, strippers, bag ladies, in fact everyone he encounters and most importantly himself is nothing short of stunning. This book is crammed with fascinating stories which in and of themselves are great but without which you would still be left with an incredibly insightful book about people and our inner truths and fears.

Stories I particularly like are "Party Favors", "Conversation with what once was a friend", "To Push Away or to Clutch" and "Taking Care of".
Poems I particularly liked are the beautiful and charming "First Person Third Person First", the dark and direct "Guess I should talk about sex", the dark and funny "Truth about Modeling", the grim foreboding "Inky Bloater" and my favorite, "At the Edge" which to me was like an updated and slightly more optimistic take on Langston Hughes' "A Suicide Note".

Overall, I read this book too fast and have had to re-read it twice to catch up with the brilliant and still racing mind and prose of the enigma that is Clint Catalyst.

5 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT TO THE GOTH TRIUMVIRATE.......2006-05-31

which I deem:

1) "What is Goth?" by Voltaire
For spelling out the basics to looky-loos, kinderbats, or insiders who aren't afraid to laugh at themselves (for fear of exposing the adhesive-stripes along the gumline of their fake fangs)...

2) "Cottonmouth Kisses" by Clint Catalyst
For its sinister and gorgeous first-person account of life within the nightclub netherworlds. I've known many a Goth girl over the years who's had her share of Clint "pin-ups" and "shrines," and the fact that he's lived a life so far beyond the margins of Hot Topic and mainstream acceptability (and SURVIVED it) is more "Goth" (i.e., barbaric -- i.e., AUTHENTIC) than any paint-by-numbers impostors out there...

3) "21st Century Goth" by Mick Mercer
For its role as an informative compendium of the international scene in all its varied shades of shadow. There is no easy answer, no singular attempt in this book to pigeonhole Goths -- in fact, it does the opposite. Plus, I mean, it's MICK MERCER, who's been reporting on the scene longer than most batpackers these days have been alive. Pay your respects to the grandaddy of Goth!

And ALL HAIL THE TRIUMVIRATE!

5 out of 5 stars in depth eye opener.......2002-11-13

Mr. Clint has really let all of us, no matter what stage of life we are in, what planet we are from, or the aumont of zeros on our paycheck, look inside his world and gave us a whole new realm of thought. I loved this book. I read it in two days. AND thats with two kids under the age of 4, a hubby and a big white dog. I couldnt put it down. Its an awesome book. I can not wait for his next wonder in print... keep up the good work clint. This is definately a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Catalyst at his Best!!.......2000-11-28

This is a great selection of essays and poetry from Clint Catalyst. They deal with gay relationships, adolescence, and out of control drug addiction. These subjects are dealt with in such an honest, clear and edgy way. The lives of these unconventional characters are brought to the page so intensely with all their flaws clearly exposed. You'll feel their thoughts and feelings. The artistic language used in this book make it a pleasure to read right through to the last page. No matter how dark and trashy these characters get you'll want to read more.

This was my first introduction to the author's writings (thanks,Sheldon) and I truly enjoyed this book. I think what really made this book special was the poetry in-between the essays and fiction. These poems were so easy to read and what I mean by that is they were very understandable. You don't have to spend all day figuring out what the author is trying to say. They are a joy to read. I look forward to this author's future work. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!.......2000-10-23

After reading Cottonmouth Kisses I found myself in awe of the sheer richness of Clint's language. His command of both poetry and prose is astounding and refreshing indeed. His honesty and unpretentious approach to the recording of his own experiences is a gift to his reader. Whether Clint is writing about drug addiction, sex, friendship, or love, the sheer energy of his personality shines through in every piece. The combination of rage, passion, sorrow, and humor that animates this book is something to behold and reading it was like being taken on a ride where every turn promised something new. A truly wonderful collection of writing. Moving, engaging, and always on the mark.

This book gives an accurate depiction of the snakes behavior and habits, very educational and uses layman terms making it easy to understand but yet full of scientific data. I rate this book a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 due to the topic of its contents is dry to me. However this type of thing may really excite you. If you enjoy snakes I would recommend you check it out especially if you live in the southeastern United States due to your close proximity with this snake.

              Book Description

Glazing pottery is an ancient process, dating back 25,000 years, yet is a medium and art form that is still being explored and advanced today. So many variables go into creating a beautiful glaze--from ingredients to application to firing--that their recipes are prized among potters.

This breathtaking collection of work from 53 ceramic artists goes beyond a mere gallery of their work, inviting readers into their studios to share their insights into the aesthetics of ceramic surfaces as well as the formulas for some of their most successful glazes.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Smashingly Good.......2005-02-19

My husband and I have met Susan Peterson and many of the potters that are in the book. The book presents works by the artist as they would present them to a friend. The photos and writings really put the glaze recipes in focus.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2004-10-15

I love this book and use it often as a reference for glazes. I appreciate the broad range of glazes offered, and the fact that this book doesn't cater only to potters, and "functional" ceramics. There's a variety of functional and sculptural styles that offer inspiration for any artist.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RANGE AND SUCCINCT DEPTH.......2001-12-06

Peterson chooses a wide variety of functional and sculptural work, from low fire through high fire, and has the artist explain their processes and give recipes. What more could you want! As a ceramic artist, it takes going to a lot of workshops, talking to a lot of artists, and reading a lot of books to get the breadth of information she puts forward in a succinct and visually pleasing manner.

The pieces chosen represent a thoughtful variety of work being done in both functional and sculptural ceramics. Each piece is superlative in its relationship between surface and form. As a ceramic artist I found myself with many ideas and left with the resources to explore and execute those ideas. It was like going to a really great show and being told all the artist's recipes and secrets.

While not exhaustive of information (see Dan Rhodes), it presents everything in a very visually appealing manner while not losing technical information. This is to be expected from the author of the classic "The Craft and Art of Clay."

              Susan Peterson does it again!

2 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Smashing.......2001-11-14

I was greatly disappointed with this glossy glaze/coffee table book. I could not honestly imagine anyone would be interested in re-creating the glazes used on the second-rate ceramics pictured here. Sure, the photos are nice and the layout is attractive, but the selected works are mostly sculptural, with the glazes being not really essential to the focus of the work.

The book is thoughtfully organized by maturing temperatures of the glazes, and recipes are given. I was suprised to see so many commercial glazes, stains and clay bodies used. The whole thing came across as a come-on for Guild.com and its pottery supply company sponsers.

5 out of 5 stars Personality Plus for Parents.......2006-03-03

This book is timeless in its content and applicable to all ages of parents/grandparents and children/grandchildren. The book includes a profile to help you establish the personalities of each child/parent and then offers natural characteristics of each personality and how they interact with one another. You will find the strengths and weaknesses of each one and how to work out the struggles that accompany those characteristics. I have personally used this book over and over to help me understand my own children and grandchildren. In addition, as a retreat speaker,a MOPS speaker, and a presenter at parenting seminars, this book is the focus of my presentations. After people buy this book and read it, I receive calls to have one-on-one conversations to help guide them in better relationships with their child/children. This book is truly a gift to parents in helping them understand how their child functions and how they can reinforce the strengths and help overcome the weaknesses. Read it and find a new relationship with your child/grandhild.

4 out of 5 stars Humor and Information rolled into one book.......2005-09-28

I tell you what, if you want a book written about personalities in good humor and great fun, Personality Plus for Parents just about says it all! Not only is Personality Plus for Parents informative and enlightening but it's extremely humorous as well. If Florence Littaeur decides to quit whatever she is doing right now, she should consider writing a fiction novel. I don't know about you, but I would DEFINITELY get one.

Back to the topic in hand...deciphering the personalities of our children. To be honest, I know exactly what kind of children I am raising. I know precisely what makes them tick because I am quite sure I didn't choose to stay home to raise them for nothing. I want to know them inside out, and that's exactly the situation right now. I know my kids very well. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM. Both my kids have opposing personalities, as different as Pluto and Sun can be. Their personalities clash like crazy and who would live on if they were to share a room. Jared is lazy and fun-loving beyond words. He's keen to learn and excited about almost everything. He's the kind of kid who gets excited about learning how to say `detergent'. Joshua, in the meantime, lives in his own world. He would rather brood about something and then dawdle on his Doodle Board. But this is not about my kids but my point is that before reading this Personality Plus for Parents by Florence Littauer, I wasn't so sure what to do with their behavioral differences.

But now, every time a kid, my kid (funny calling them `a' kid) misbehaves, her advice rings in my head. So, if you ask me if the book is good and useful or not, I'd say `Boy, is it ever!'

Like `Rich dad, Poor dad' and `Chicken Soup' series, there are many different versions made for different people. There's chicken soup for parents, there's chicken soup for gays, there's chicken soup for the Chinese mother, there's chicken soup....for say....clowns! Before I picked up this book, I read Personality Plus which was written for normal people, with or without kids. This book discusses the personalities of children, how to discover their personalities from very early on and how to deal with them so that we can help them realize their full potential.

I like it that there are loads of examples in the book, scenarios that you can instantly apply to what happens right in front of your own TV set. You read and then go, `Yeah, that like so happened just 5 minutes ago!'. And let me tell you, the scenarios and examples really helped me apply the methods she introduced to the book.

One thing is missing, though. A very strategic method of applying all her theories and advice on our children, individually. In Personality Plus, she merely explained how our children behave and how to deal with them, in general. But there's no definitive plan on how to curb future potential behavioral problems.

But apart from that, this book is not only a valuable friend and filled to the brim with information but it's wildly funny and entertaining as well.

So, for parents, whatever it's worth, go get it and read it in the bath tub and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars this book has helped me more than any other parenting book.......2005-09-28

I disagree with the reviewer below. This book explains why kids act the way they do, it doesn't excuse their behavior or give them a license to sin because of it.
I understand my children SO much better than before I read this book. They all know their temperaments and they can spot others' temperaments right away. This helps us understand people. It has helped me understand my husband where I didn't in almost 20 years of marriage. I understand my sister and where she used to offend me now I realize she just tends to be flaky. :)
I could say so much about this book. I truly think every parent should read it. I like the one for adults as well.
Last but not least this book even helped me understand myself.
To me this book isn't unbiblical. It helped me in all good ways. I know how to specifically pray for my children and them understanding why they are prone to do the things they do or feel the way they feel....it's all good. I can't say enough good things about this book.

1 out of 5 stars File this book in the circular file. .......2005-02-21

I have to depart from the rest of the folks and say I thought this book was a diasspointment. The woman who wrote it claims to be a Christian, but I didn't see any mention of the word
"sin" which is the root of all bad behavior. I will admit I dind't read the whole thing, it irritated me too much. So I did jump around alot. All the little stories are "cute," but we are doing our children a disservice if we say "you're sanguine, so of course you will be flighty and forgetful." This may be so, but we are still called by God to train up our children to His standard, not lower the standard so that each of our children can meet it in thier own "tempermental" style. For example "Melencholy Tyler is protective of his own space. He likes to get hugs from his parents, but is irritated if he things his older sister is hugging him too much. His sanguine sister "simply can't resist" giving her little brother hugs" This isn't a problem of different temperments, it's a sin problem on the part of both children. Brother is not putting others first and is not willing to show/accept love from sister. Sister is not putting others first, she isn't controlling a behavior that she knows is irritating to her brother. Mom and Dad can help both children be more like Jesus by teaching them that others are more important, that love overlooks an offense, etc. Why do I need to know that my kid is melancholy for that? I do believe that all kids have their unique stengths and weakness, but the root of bad behaviour is self love and self centerdness, not their temperment. As a final thought, I think I woudn't have been so offended by this book if the author hadn't been talking putting herself forth as a Christian. This kind of stuff is fine for those who don't know the Lord, it would probably even be very helpful. But for believers, we want our children to grow up depending on the Holy Spirit who guides them through knowledge of the scriptures.

5 out of 5 stars The best parenting book ever!.......2004-06-24

If I was going to recommend a book for parents battling with their kids, this would be it! I wish I had read it before all the others. It explains so much about why my son does the things he does, and the best way to deal with his behaviour without totalling losing it with him. Great to be able to do the personality test for parents too. A must-have!

The renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has once again produced a remarkably wise and useful reference for parents. Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop is spot-on when he says in the foreword that the book "should revolutionize parenting for many readers." That is, especially for those parents who are tired of euphemistically referring to their kid as a "spirited child" and find themselves frequently exhausted and embarrassed by their child's temper tantrums, insensitive remarks, and general impatience, self-centeredness, and irritability. Instead of merely advocating ways to discipline behavioral problems, this book will help you fathom just where your child's inscrutable (but normal) outbursts are coming from--to prevent and better manage them in the future.

During his 30 years of research into childhood and adolescent behavior, author Dr. William B. Carey has found that temperament is about 50 percent genetic. So even if you were a little monster and have found your fruit hasn't fallen far from the tree, there's that whole other 50 percent that can be improved upon. He's also found that temperament can be separated into nine aspects: activity, adaptability, distractibility, initial reaction, intensity, mood, persistence and attention span, regularity, and sensitivity.

Once Dr. Carey has walked you through the process of profiling your child's temperament according to these easy-to-comprehend factors (and the ways it affects you that you're probably unaware of), you'll learn specific techniques for managing your child's behavioral problems both at home and at school. He also offers tips for parenting siblings whose temperaments may be quite different from each other; helpful facts on temperament's relationship to learning disabilities; and its influence on common physical problems such as sleep disorders, bed wetting, and obesity. With page after page of enlightening tips, Understanding Your Child's Temperament is certainly a sanity saver for exhausted parents.

I found the descriptions of the personality types good, but the practical advice in how to deal with those types and specifically the combinations of types lacking.
I went back and read some of my other child development books and found they not only had a lot of the same information, but much more practical advice in how to deal with them. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles is a terrific one. The information on the temperament types is more brief, but again, you can get the gyst pretty easily, and the practical side is much richer... and that, for me, was more important. In addition, the Power Struggles book also covers the parent's personality type and how to work your temperament WITH your child's and know where the danger zones are.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating insight into children's behavior.......2000-04-19

Even though I am only an aunt to two children - and not a parent - I found that this book provides valuable information for anyone dealing with children. Dr. Carey dispells the myth that babies and children are 'blank slates' that can be regulated, scheduled and expected to behave in certain ways. One of the most heartening aspects of the book is that Dr. Carey shows both the "positive" and "negative" aspects of each type of termperament he identifies, avoiding completely the categorizing of any sort of personality as 'problematic.'

His argument against the use of Ritalin is very persuasive, as so many of the children prescribed the drug are actually exhibiting behaviors that are within the range of "normal." Parents having "trouble" dealing with their child's behavior would learn a great deal from this book, particularly how modifying their own actions can influence an individual child's "fit" with his or her environment.

The writing is quite accessible, with concrete examples to illustrate the key points and strategies that can be applied when dealing with children. I've recommended this book to several of my friends and colleagues with children, and they have all found it thoroughly useful and informative. And I, merely as a party interested in behavior and children, found it an accessible and fascinating book that taught me a great deal about how to deal with my own niece and nephew!

5 out of 5 stars temperment analysis is a powerful tool to figure out a child.......1998-05-12

this temperment approach makes sense of a lot of my two children's behavior over the last few (9 &5) years. I've seen way too many children on ridelin and agree with the author that temperment has to be considered before we start doping up our kids with speed to make them temporarily easier to deal with. The case studies are carefully selected and get across the author's theories effectively while making the book understandable to any parent interested in children's behavier.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful book for all parents!.......1997-12-04

This book is an extremely helpful resource for all parents, especially those who consider their children difficult. An explanation is given of what temperament is, along with a discussion of the wide range of normal behaviors, some of which have traditionally been labeled as abnormal in the past but are actually just variations of normal. The book's most useful aspect as I see it is its guidelines for reducing the amount of stress and conflict between parent(s) and child(ren). A suggested plan is given for identifying the temperament profile of your child and how to spot the trouble areas, which depend not only on the child's innate temperament but how well that temperament "fits" with the parent's expectations for the child. To alleviate stress in problem areas (such as a naturally slow and careful child with active, fast-paced parents who are aggravated by the child's pace) Dr. Carey gives many specific suggestions and strategies for adapting to the child's style. This is one thing I really like about the book: there are many, many specific, concrete examples and suggestions of things to say and do, that a parent can use right away. Besides the notion that many behaviors considered "problems" by some parents and health care professionals are actually variations of normal behavior, another important point is that extremes of behavior that are problematic in a small child (such as dogged persistence leading to inflexibility) can be assets later in life (persistence is a good thing for most adults). This book can change lives for parents who are fed up with their children, or who find themselves at their wits' end dealing with them. It can immediately make life easier for all members of a family. Even for parents who don't feel quite so frazzled by their children, there is much important insight to be gained from Understanding Your Child's Temperament. I recommend it to all parents.

I first read this book 24 years ago when my oldest daughter was a baby. It proved an invaluable resource in raising her and her younger sister. I loaned out my copy to many other parents as well. I am purchasing it again for my two daughters, one who is becoming an elementary school teacher and the other who will be a parent soon. This is a great book for understanding how God uniquely designs our children.

                  Book Description

Since Dr. Spock published Baby and Child Care in 1941 there has been a seemingly endless stream of books with advice on parenting. In spite of that great effort-much of it wise and useful-parenting has not become easier, and outcomes for our children do not seem to be improving. According to many authorities, they are worsening. Authors Harkey and Jourgensen strongly suggest that a major flaw in most parenting advice is the assumption that one child is much like another, and one parent is much like another. Instead, the unique and highly individual temperament of the child makes a world of difference in how that child learns and socializes, how he or she responds to discipline, learns self-control, reasons, and makes decisions about life. Parent temperament, in turn, has a profound influence on actual parenting style, no matter what theoretical model the parent follows. In the first volume of a two volume set-Raising CuddleBugs, BraveHearts, WorkerBees and ButterFlies: Measuring and Understanding Temperament in Children-the authors give parents a well researched questionnaire for measuring temperament in children, and a thorough description of temperament differences in children's behaviors. In Volume II, subtitled Adult Temperament and Parenting Styles, parents are shown how to explore and understand their own temperament, and how to look at the effects of parent temperament on their expectations for their children and on their own parenting style. The most accepted research model for good parenting is described, and parents are challenged to "stretch" toward this model while staying within their own temperament comfort zone.

The two volumes cover the two primary elements in the child-parent relationship--namely, the temperament of the child and the temperament of the parent. As anyone who has had this relationship knows, these temperaments do not always mesh ideally or effectively. With their professional and working experiences in the field of child care, Harkey and Jourgensen take a good look at the crucial place of the respective temperaments in child-rearing. With this, they provide tests for identifying different types of temperaments and discuss how the interaction of the different--sometimes similar, sometimes complementary, sometimes opposing--child and parent temperaments work in the relationship. Harvey has been a professor of psychology at California State University-Pomona. Her daughter Jourgensen is a certified trainer for the Myers-Brigg Temperament Indicator who gives workshops on temperament measurement and parenting.
The importance of temperament in the child-parent relationship cannot be overestimated. As the experienced authors point out, the two different temperaments making for the nexus of the child-parent relationship are usually the main factor in the degree of success or failure of child-rearing. No one would deny this is the basis for the quality of the relationship between a parent and child.
In focusing on temperament, the co-authors recognize the conditions for the effectiveness of any school of parenting. The usually overlooked or taken-for-granted subject of temperament they bring in does not aim to replace any school, theory, style, etc., but to form the basis for how guidance, rules, discipline, etc., are brought into and inculcated in child-rearing. They offer no quick fix to any problems of parenting or a child-parent relationship. But their subject and the counsel they relate in applying it is invaluable for parents, teachers, counselors, etc., regarding the challenges, dilemmas, and uncertainties of relationships with young persons.
