So many Sweaters, So Little Time.......2007-09-30
Alice Starmore is truly a design genius. Don't be fooled by the visual complexity and subtlety of these designs. With few exception, they are all knit with two strands of yarn at a time. She uses between 6 and 20+ various shades in various color palettes and makes tapestry rich sweaters a knockout. Follow her color recommendations or design your own, you won't be disappointed in the results. Stranded on a desert island, I would take this book, my needles and a boatload of yarn!
Knit something glorious.......2007-04-25
I actually have two copies of this book. The first was purchased more than 15 years ago, and is a much loved / slightly tattered hardcover. I recently received the paperback version as a gift to replace my much-used original.
I love patterns that have either lots of colorwork, or lots of texture. This is why I learned to knit in the first place. This book is heavily skewed towards color work. I have been making the sweaters from this book for various relatives for many years, and am currently working on a sweater full of celtic creatures for my daughter. You can also transpose some of the designs, such as the entwined dragons from the back of a child's sweater onto other projects as long as you keep the stitches even on either side.
If you look at the guages, you can substitute available yarns for the yarns listed in the book. Consider the colors and yarn selections in the photographs as "suggestions" and you will free yourself to make some personalized choices.
Warning: In the years since this book was published, some of the patterns have become dated. This is mostly due to the shape of the sweaters and ever changing fashion trends.
Have I mentioned that I love this book? I can't imagine not having it to reach for when the urge to knit something glorious strikes.
Beautiful book -- buy it while you can!.......2007-02-26
This is my first Alice Starmore book. I heard about her on a knitting forum site. I believe this is the only Alice Starmore book that is still in print. It is a lovely book and lives up to the high expectations raised about Alice Starmore designs on the knitting site. The beautiful sweaters are photographed on models in breathtaking natural scenery. It's a knitting book and travel book under one cover.
Her designs are based on traditional motifs seen on Irish jewelry and in illustrations in old Irish manuscripts. The colors are either beautifully subtle or strikingly bold.
I have found out why this is the only one of her books in print. There is a controversy surrounding Alice and her daughter Jade (which I will not attempt to explain) which explains why her other books will probably never be reprinted and no new books of knitting designs will be written by her. So buy this beautiful Alice Starmore book for a great price from Amazon while you still can!
A visual feast!.......2006-03-24
I got this book on a whim, not knowing much about what patterns I'd find within. When it arrived in the mail, I pored over all the beautiful things inside and then brought it to my knitting class that night. My knitting friends are all jealous and have found patterns they want to make too - but the work is pretty advanced. There are some lovely color patterns, some cable ones - just gorgeous - but not for the faint of heart. I like that there are some for children as well. The photos are stunningly beautiful and I know I'll get a lot of use out of this book.

Alice Starmore is a very artistic and creative designer. Her out of print titles go for prices of $100-$700 on ebay, so order ths one while it is in print! Beatiful pictures and sweater designs with many shaded colors.

Best beginners' reference I've found.......2005-05-03
I took a beginners' sewing class that taught me the basics of sewing, and as my first solo project, I decided to make curtains for my living room and kitchen. I got practically every book that the library had on the topic of curtain-making, and I can tell you that this was the best one for an extreme novice.
The authors make very few assumptions about the reader's sewing ability. They expect that you know how to operate a sewing machine, that you know what a seam is, and that's just about it. Everything else is explained in easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. And, they cover a variety of different treatments, which is nice if you want to do something simple that doesn't just involve flat sheets of fabric hanging from your curtain rod.
I decided finally to buy this one, because I wound up checking it out from the library so often. Definitely worthwhile for any beginner sewer who wants to make curtains.
Great Book!.......2001-04-03
Beginners should be VERY encouraged after purchasing this book. The directions are written in plain english and the photographs are terrific step-by-step guides. Every project was presented in an easy-to-learn fashion, and they tell you exactly what you'll learn and what you'll need. A must for anyone who wants to learn and is frustrated by the lack of true beginner sewing books.

It is also valuable text for existing commercial growers, if only to revisit some of the basics from time to time. Divided into 11 sections, Secrets to a Successful Greenhouse and Business will tell you everything you want to know to get started in a greenhouse business. The book covers all major growing systems including hydroponics, organics, and good old-fashioned soil cultivation. It includes a basic plan to build a solar greenhouse, and information on soil and fertilizer mixes, insect and disease control, marketing, and guidelines to organize your greenhouse business. The section on ?Selling, Marketing, and Economics is especially useful for new comers to greenhouse production. Gone are the days of growing plants on speculation and hoping to find a market before the crop is harvested. The first step in any successful horticulture business is to identify your market, and to grow what the market wants. This section offers some valuable insights into how to go about that. There is also a special treatment for school greenhouse programs. There are few greenhouse texts that go beyond the hardware of a greenhouse business. This text does. The section on Guidelines to Organizing Your Business is about turning into actions. According to the author, people don't plan to fail they just fail to plan. In this section, apart from highlighting the need for good planning, the author explains the basic steps for organizing your greenhouse business. These include on sight considerations such as obtaining zoning ordinances and building permits, and types of financing, right down to Workers Compensation. Another section on Delivery, Collecting, & Using Computers, is a practical guide for those processes. I bought this book as a gift, but ended up keeping it for myself. It goes through steps to define what types of lighting are best for plants, and what exactly lighting is (some shade is a lot more light than I thought)

I've been borrowing this book from the library, and had to own it. It has everything! I have never seen a book so complete, from lawns to gardens tolawn and garden pests to fertilizer and compost, it takes all the guess work out of planting schedules and problems. You just go to the current month to see what you should be doing. It's wonderful!

This is a superb exploration of the debilitating disease of panic and other anxiety disorders. Dr. Root does an outstanding job of delivering the message in nothing less than a staggering poetic exploration of this topic. A must read for all whom have experienced panic attacks.
Average Book on Panic.......2000-09-30
If you have panic disorder and are looking for a truly helpful book, you may find more understanding and relief in any of Claire Weekes' three texts, George Clum's "Coping With Panic" or R. Reid Wilson's "Don't Panic".
I don't feel this book adds much that hasn't already been said more clearly before. Sorry.
