1 out of 5 stars Overcharged.......2007-07-22

Don't buy from this vendor, the book was prepriced and they charged substanitally more plus the frieght. When contacted about it they asked for more imformation and pictures of the product then is required to get a social security number. They were bascially nasty with their attitude. Amazon should not list these people.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for the antiquers reference library!.......2005-01-14

This is an absolute sensational book! It is a book that must be included in your antiques reference library!
It covers everything A to Z on the subject of identifying and authenticating period pieces. You WILL be able to identify period pieces once you've studied the book subjects. It offers hundred of pictures, with clear cut difinitions and examples.
If you are an antiques dealer, beginner or expert, you will not regret owning this very comprehensive guide.
I would also like to recomment The Bulfinch Anatomy of Antique Furniture; another must have reference book.

3 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2002-06-11

This volume provides a good reference for collectors of antique furniture. It includes a detailed chronology of styles and periods, coverering Europe and the US, and presents typical pieces of various categories of furniture, including details on construction. It is well illustrated. Unfortunately no relative values are provided. Also degree of rarity, popularity, etc. is also rarely mentioned.(A tip: I still think that Peter Philp's FIELD GUIDE TO ANTIQUE FURNITURE is much better. In fact, if you've got Philp's book, you don't really need this one).

Book Description

Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intimacy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. The author has analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements in ten representative cottage gardens--eight in England and two in the United States. Her spectacular photographs render the look and atmosphere of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book--completely updated for this new edition--may be found specific horticultural information on a wide variety of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, and a list of sources for old rose varieties. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estates of England, manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great for the pictures.......2007-08-15

But of little use if you're a novice looking for more of a "how-to" guide with practical advice on what flowers, etc. to plant and when. It got to the point I hardly read the text by the end.

1 out of 5 stars Will not teach you how to create a cottage garden.......2007-01-29

Beautiful pictures, impenetrably dense text. I got this because of all the great reviews, but I have to disagree with them. I was expecting "how to create a cottage garden," but this is more like "two dozen cottage gardens and the two million plants that are in them." It was information overload, and yet not very informative. I was very disappointed. I returned this and got _Cottage Garden_ by Elisabeth Arter, which was much cheaper and much more what I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment.......2006-12-21

This book is full of lovely photographs of English cottage gardens but I found it to be of no use to me as a gardener in the United States. The so-called layout plans are just rough sketches with no labeling of plants. The growing guidelines and plant lists are standard--nothing new there. I enjoyed looking at photos of Tasha Tudor's gardens but I think this book is a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars USEFUL RESOURCE.......2006-11-10

A great guide on creating a cottage garden for those new to gardening.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, although I do not live in North America!.......2006-11-10

I just love english gardens. That is why i bought this book, thinking that I would just have a great time looking at the photos, but I must say, it has been a great tool when working on my "english garden to be". As I don't live North America, I turn aroung the seasons and I'm ok!

4 out of 5 stars Sacred Gardens............2000-12-31

THE ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN by William Robinson, was first published in 1883 and republished a number of times afterward. The current version available from Amazon is a reprint of the 15th Edition Robinson edited shortly before he died in the 1930s. This new reprint of the 15th Edition contains the "Botanical Revisions" prepared by Graham Stuart Thomas for the 1984 Edition, as well as a Forward by Henry Mitchell, and an introduction by Deborah Nevins.

The book is set in old style type and contains numerous black and white illustrations--etchings of photos and prints of sketches. Some of them are a bit grainy, but many are not, and even the grainy ones have their good points. The content of each photo is quite interesting, and the sketches provide the "personal" touch one seldom sees in text books these days.

In one print, taken at Gravetye Manor over 100 years ago, a climbing tea rose clings to a bamboo split-rail post fence surrounded by bush roses. The sunlight reflects from the walkway and warms the flowers and a huge clay pot sitting in a corner. In another photo, pots of 'Chimney Campanula' guard an old Jacobin chest sitting in a hall at Staunton Court. Sketches and photos are used to illustrate flowers all through the last half of the book--a flower dictionary with anectdotal and literary "blurbs" written by Robinson himself.

Mitchell says Robinson "for all practical purposes invented gardening as we know it." Robinson's garden, 'Gravetye Manor' is a hop, skip and a jump from Sissinghurst, but few know of it's existence. Yet, Robinson is the "grandfather" of Sissinghurst, because Gertrude Jekyll who helped Mrs. Nichols design Sissinghurst, was Robinson's disciple. She literally followed in his footsteps and emulated his style.

Robinson found most of the gardens of his day deplorable (19th Century Victorian). Those of the wealthy were modeled after the French and Italian formal plan, loaded with clipped Yews and bedded out every spring with ribbons of color provided by geraniums and marigolds. The walkways were lined with ornate scupture and surrounded by towering "imprisoned" evergreen shrubs and trees including clipped Yews which he loathed. He said these gardens reminded him of graveyards.

His ideal was the cottage garden. He considered the garden a sacred space. He said one had to visit the houses of the poor to find truly beautiful gardens. Henry Mitchell reflecting on this says, "The thing that separates the true gardener from the mere architect or designer (and there is something extremely suspicious in the airs they give themselves nowadays) is that the gardener stands in awe before his violets, while others think of them in terms of [sic] plant materials."

Robinson's ideas grew out of the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century. His designs and thinking were reflected in the Arts and Crafts movement based on the importance of reconnecting to nature. His contemporaries in thinking were Ruskin, Morris, Stickly, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others we identify with this movement. If you're a Stickly, cantilevered, picturesque kind of person, you'll like this book.

With a decided emphasis on cozy country charm, The English Country Cottage explores 25 delightful old cottages that have been updated with all the comforts of modern life and yet manage to retain much of their period flavor. Even the names ring with the unmistakable sound of the quaint English countryside: Smuggler's Haunt, Mustard Pot Hall, Wealden Close, Rose Cottage. Most are relatively traditional, though no less appealing, with lots of plump chintz cushions, botanical prints, nautical themes, pleasantly weathered furnishings, and hutches overflowing with crockery. But a few are refreshingly different, such as the vibrantly hued Cider-House Cottage, where the owner painted fanciful designs all over each room to warm the cold look of the stone walls, or Folly Cottage, with its bright red walls and many Gothic accents. The clear photographs display plenty of good ideas for mimicking the style, but by and large readers must extract these ideas themselves since the text focuses much more on examining these particular cottages (what renovations were needed to make the old structures livable today; descriptions of garden designs or color scheme choices) than on analyzing the key design elements or explaining how to re-create the specific effects. --Amy Handy

    Book Description

An intricate mix of beauty, utility, wildness, and domestication: that's the quintessential British garden. From its medieval beginnings as a yard for livestock and vegetables, the cottage garden became a retreat for the gentry of the 17th century, and then took on a new dimension of sophistication--though it never relinquished its original functional roots. Take a tour through rows of medicinal herbs, topiary, woodland, meadow flowers, and even exotic species. A lovely and inspiring tribute to a classic form of planting.

It has a wide range of beautifully photographed cottages and gardens. I am online buying 2 more copies as gifts for friends.

      Product Description

This charming book of hand-colored papercuts is guaranteed to delight gardeners young and old, active and armchair. It is a delicious garden alphabet, a convention as old as the sixteenth century, but one that seems to lend itself especially well to the advantages of high relief, gaily-colored papercuts.

In this vivid garden, where A is for Arbor and Z is for Zucchini, artist Wisnewski brings her talents to bear not only on flowers, shrubs, herbs, and fruit, but also on the resident fauna: bees and cats, children, dogs, and rabbits. The result is no static florilegium, but a witty and whimsical beehive of various and charming activity.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie.......2003-07-11

It's not often I review older books but once in a while the quality is such that I break my own rule. (I'm not sure whether that makes me flexible, whimsical or inconsistent. Whatever.) Anne Scott-James writes such lovely smooth prose. It's not at all pretentious; it's easy to read and her words envelop her topic like a comfortable blanket.

She is knowledgeable. She has a lifetime of cottage gardening to draw on and understands the topic right through to her bones. She has also done a generous amount of research into the history of the cottage garden and these together give the book a depth that is seldom found.

So this book, that so easily could be cloyingly sentimental, is actually a historical record of the development of the cottage garden in England. Starting with medieval times the writer shows how a "garden" of a few herbs used for medicinal purposes, together with a few fruit trees grew to become, by Victorian times, a corner of the most idyllic land in all the world. The Victorian cottage garden was unabashedly sentimentalized by poets and artists who would have you believe that the flowers were always blooming and the family was always content. This disguises the truth that a labourers plot of land had to supply vegetables and fruit enough to feed his family, with perhaps a few left over for sale, as well as producing flowers. But the flowers could help the family budget too. As one old man put it "We sold so many bunches of snowdrops in spring that they paid the rates". ("Rates" are local taxes.)

I found this a delightful read and it added a lot to my knowledge of cottage gardening. This book will be appreciated by anyone who is interested in the English cottage style of gardening or in the history of gardens in England.

          Book Description

In Margery Fish's imaginative adaptation of the traditional cottage garden style that she saw disappearing around her, she brought together old-fashioned plants and contemporary plants in the same vein. Today's mixed borders are a direct descendant of the style Margery Fish created at East Lambrook Manor in Somerset - now once again open to the public. Cottage Garden Flowers covers plants that grow easily and naturally, including easy, adaptable bulbs, perennials and shrubs, such as Astrantia, columbines, daffodils, daisies, Dianthus, foxgloves, hollyhocks, Japonica, old roses, Phlox, Primula or Virburnum.

I borrowed this book from the library and would love a copy of it. Reading this book is like sitting with a favourite Aunt discussing gardening. Her descriptions of flowers are at times hilarious and always filled with useful information. She lists a lot of the "old" flowers. The ones to watch for and beg from any gardener who might be willing to part with them.

5 out of 5 stars Visit The Old Neighborhood.......2006-10-11

I love Lowell Streiker's book The Old Neighborhood. Simply and honestly written, it's a wonderful, funny and moving book about childhood in Chicago. In stories about the frozen fire hydrant and the endless paper route that range from mom, movies and gardens to Howdy Doody, daydreaming in school and Norton the Nemesis, Lowell Streiker reminds us of the joy, pain, innocence and complications of being a kid in times that we all know in our bones. Movies, religion, snails, kool-aid stands, parents, grandparents--it's all covered in short, funny, often profound passages that move to the heart of being an American child in post World War Two years. These pages took my Chicago mom back to her own childhood neighborhood world. If you've ever been a child (whether or not you've lived in Chicago)you will love this book.

I LOVED THE MEMOIR! It reminded me of my own childhood years on the West Side.
          --Fr. Andrew M. Greeley, sociologist/novelist

This is a well written, well documented journey into one of Chicago's great eras!

The Old Neighborhood is charged with great insights into the Chicago of 1942 to 1952. The author exemplifies these perceptions through true stories about his own childhood.

I found this such a delightful book, hearing the myriad of stories in great detail about his family and his particular neighborhood.

          5 out of 5 stars A fascinating tour through one boy's childhood.......2006-05-15

Reading THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD is like flipping through a well-worn keepsake album, accompanied by a guide with a spot-on memory. Complete with vintage photographs, we revisit 1940s Chicago, with foods of the era, movies, radio programs, movie theaters, street vendors, and other touchstones of the author's life. We also meet his parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and a host of neighbors and childhood chums. Each relationship offers either a warm remembrance, or painful recollections. This is a powerful and poignant voyage that should not be missed

5 out of 5 stars What a delightful little book.......2006-04-21

I don't think Lowell has ever forgotten anything that has ever happened to him! That's what makes this such a delightful story, hearing all the myriad of stories in great detail about his family, his home, his neighborhood, Chicago, the times.

Who wouldn't fall in love with Gramma Peller, his mainstay, his most ardent supporter. We become intimates with all the many Peller And Streiker relatives, their kindness, their foibles, attend their huge family get-togethers, learn from him whom to pay attention to.

Knowing him as a scholarly minister, it was surprising to find he was thoroughly bored with school his first years, and then delightful to watch the transition as he finally found encouraging teachers who saw his potential.

We learn the names of his neighborhood chums, what they were like, what they did together, I found myself worrying what dastardly deed Phillip (also a Junior) was up to next, and how "Good Junior" could always be counted on.

He picks up all the flavors of that Chicago neighborhood, the gangs, the territories, the movies, the museums, the parks till you feel you are there. And writers with a dry wit as his naivet? receives some real life street smarts. And now and then, tongue in cheek exposes parents' self-serving rules, with which he learned to cope at a tender age.

This is a wise and warm and delightful story, one you hate top finish, but in this case, fortunately there are more years to hear about. I hope Lowell is busy writing about the next ten years!

I give this one five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Lowell!.......2006-03-29

Growing up in Chicago in nearly those same years, I was delighted at how well the author was able to bring that time and place to life. Being a girl raised in a working class suburb made for a less treacherous childhood - no fights or gangs - but so much was shared: the loving aunts, getting called home for dinner, the soap operas [Can a girl from a little mining town in West Virginia ....], the feared parent [my father with his razor strop], the petty thievery, the ice cream truck, the clique, and on and on.
This is not a tedious diary. This is a charming gem, a slice of life book like Russell Baker's "Growing Up", something mostly sweet to take the mind off of CNN [and our ultimate destruction] and escape to the past. I laughed out loud on almost every page.
I too went back to my old neighborhood a few years ago, camera in hand, to see the old willow and the creek behind my grammar school. Did I really expect a tree to be there 50 years later?!
Had the author mentioned the magical Riverview it would be about perfect! But thanks, Lowell, it was great fun!
