Book Description
A beautiful, wrenching debut novel chronicling the life of a family struggling for survival during the Armenian genocide in Turkey, in 1915.
At the center: Yerwant, who, at thirteen, left his home in the Anatolian hills of Turkey to study at an Armenian boarding school in Venice. Now, in May 1915, after forty years, he is planning a long-awaited reunion with his family at their homestead, Skylark Farm. But while joyful preparations for Yerwant’s arrival are being made in the town of his birth, Italy enters the Great War and closes its borders. At the same time, in Turkey, Yerwant’s family begins a brutal odyssey of forced marches and prison camps, hunger and humiliation at the hands of the Young Turks who are determined to rid their nation of minorities. In the unfolding story we follow Yerwant’s family as it struggles to survive and as four of its children set out on a dangerous and daring course of their own: to reach Yerwant, and safety, in Italy.
Antonia Arslan draws on the story of her own family to tell the story of Skylark Farm. She has transformed the “obscure memories” that are her heritage into a novel as lyrical and poignant as a fable.
Customer Reviews:
Heart-wrenching story, beautifully written.......2007-08-28
I believe I have read all the novels about the Armenian Genocide, and have been touched by all of them, but this was the only book that made me cry. Ms. Arslan's description was heart-wrenching, painful to read, and I couldn't bring myself to put it down. Knowing that this is based on Ms. Arslan's own family, made it all the more moving. Sadly, the reader clearly comprehends that the events depicted were not a singular episode, but multiplied tens of thousands of times. A beautiful book that should become required reading for schoolchildren, starting in middle-school.
Poignant reading.......2007-05-12
I had ordered this book and received it very quickly. The moment I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I think it is well written and extremely sad, but not overly dramatized. A story of tremendous courage and family love in the face of unimaginable brutality. I have just returned from a visit to Armenia and visited the Genocide Museum in Yerevan and some of the horrible photo's on display, made me think of the family in this book and what they suffered.
If ever another book comes out written by Antonia Arslan, I will buy it immediately.
Skylark Farm.......2007-04-29
I am always reticent when I pick up a book that discusses the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1917. Being the offspring of parents who survived the Genocide in Marash, Turkey, I've lived in a cocoon--my cocoon being the United States. On the other hand my reality is that my parents went through these atrocities.
Professor Arslan must have faced many of the same issues that I have in dealing with her families tortured past. Her book truly reflects the depth of her emotions in committing her families' story to paper.
I could not put her book down although I was tempted to do so many times particularly during the forced march to Aleppo, Syria. Although I knew the outcome, I still wanted to live the experience despite that fact that none of it was new to me. My families' story parallels Professor Arslans as would undoubtedly be true of many other Armenian families that were subject to this tragic period in history.
This is a book for everyone. One does not have to be Armenian to become a member of the family as they lived and loved in their city in Turkey.
Skylark Farm is a story of love, passion, sacrifice, hope and the will to go on despite the evil that was perpetrated.

So You Want to Raise Turkeys?.......2005-10-21
This book is an introduction to small-scale turkey farming. It is geared to the backyard farmer or older 4H student who has never raised turkeys before. It begins with a description of housing needs for turkeys, which includes building plans for a poultry house and sun porch. It describes poults, brooding, and flock management. The book includes plans for a variety of equipment, such as homemade feeders, waterers, and incubators. There are chapters on breeding, health, killing and processing, and preserving and cooking, as well as a small collection of recipes. At the back of the book is a glossary, a list of references, a list of state extension departments, a list of suppliers, and a list of diagnostic laboratories.
The text is written for readers who have some animal sense and some basic experience with building things by hand. Technical terms and processes are explained both in the text and with diagrams. All in all, it is a clear introduction and should prove useful to the beginning turkey farmer.
TAUGHT ME EVERYTHING ABOUT TURKEYS.......2000-12-23

Customer Reviews:
Funny and Fun.......2005-11-26
We gave the book to a niece and everyone thought it was a beautifully done, creative spin on Turkey day. The kids loved the real pictures combined with the drawings. Very clever.
Gobble This One Up!.......2005-11-07
Like TAPPLETONS THANKSGIVING, this one should be a read-aloud every year before the meal begins. The artwork is an appropriately goofy mix of realia, typography, paints with lively movement on the page, but best of all there are TWO recipes at the end of the book--Sweet Potato Casserole and Thelonius' Feather Cookies (plus lots of inspiration for feather-based art, not to mention making hats with Thelonius Feathers. Keep this one in your turkey roasting pan so you remember to read it every year! Teachers will love it as an alternative to pilgrims and parades. Best of all, kids will like knowing that they are NOT munching on Thelonius.
An Adorable Book.......2005-10-10
Just when you thought you saw it all, here comes marching in Thelonius Turkey Lives!(On Felicia Ferguson's Farm) written and illustrated by Lynn Rowe Reed.
It is an adorable book and the surprise comes not in the eating of the Turkey but into something else. No, I won't divulge its secret, however, it is resolved in a satisfying conclusion.
Without giving too much away, the story revolves around Thelonius the turkey, who believes one week prior to Thanksgiving that he is going to die. The countdown begins and
Thelonius becomes jittery and nervous before discovering that he is a famous hat designer, triggering in him hardy laughter.
The tale, with its zany characters flying off the pages, is effective in building tension, while adding in a good dose of fun and humor. And if you are a vegetarian, the plot even seems plausible, provided you are petrified of the Avian Flue. Reed is super in her rendering of simplicity in her bright and energetic illustrations, which at times, may be silly, are nonetheless good for a chuckle.
This title is a great addition to Thanksgiving literature and it will surely linger on in the minds of young listeners and readers. One last comment-you even have vegetarian recipes added at the end of the book.
Highly recommended for the little and BIG people. Believe Thelonius!

Book Description
Tom is the youngest — and smallest — in a family of ten wild turkey chicks, but he has big ambitions. While his mother keeps her brood busy with lessons on how to find food and avoid danger, Tom never stops thinking about what he really wants to do — to fluff his feathers and fan out his tail and strut like the magnificent Big Gobbler. This charming tale of growing up will introduce young readers to one of North America’s most fascinating native birds. It also includes a section on wild turkey facts.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful read-aloud tale.......2005-04-11
Award-winning artist Jim Sollers' superbly executed illustrations for Frances Bloxam's Little Tom Turkey will enable young readers ages 3 and up to thoroughly enjoy this original story of the youngest of ten wild turkey chicks. While his mother tries to teach her brood important survival lessons about finding food and avoiding danger, Little Tom can't stop thinking about what he really wants to do - walk tall and proud like the Big Gobbler. But Little Tom is small and doesn't yet have a long tail, striking red, white and blue colorations on his head, or a handsome "beard". When he tries to strut like the great birds do, he just topples over! Little Tom doesn't realize yet that that all these things come with time and nature, and he should just concentrate on learning what young turkeys need to know. A delightful read-aloud tale, with an underlying theme of learning courage and patience.

Book Description
From Seattle to New York, from Missoula to Miami, game is appearing on many restaurant menus and gracing more and more tables at home. Why? Because game, whether buffalo or boar, partridge or pigeon, is a delicious, low-fat, nutritionally impressive, and versatile alternative to more traditional meats. And since so much game is now farm-raised, it's tender and flavorful, and, best of all, readily available in butcher shops and grocery stores everywhere.
Clearly, the time is right for Wild About Game, a comprehensive, updated cookbook by a nationally recognized expert in cooking game. In this groundbreaking book, Janie Hibler offers detailed information, helpful techniques, and contemporary recipes for wild and farm-raised game. The 150 recipes range from simple dishes--Buffalo Burgers and Roast Muscovy Duck with Persimmons and Figs--to sophisticated ones--Venison Osso Buco and Ostrich Satay.
Wild About Game is divided into chapters by the types of game--birds, large game, and small and exotic game. Each begins with an explanation of each type of animal--wild and farm-raised--including what they eat, how and where to buy their meat, and the best cooking method for each cut. Then comes the best part--the recipes. Some are for farmed game, while others are innovative twists on wild game dishes that Hibler has been cooking for more than thirty years. And if you're hankering to make a recipe, but have no game, Hibler offers suggestions for non-game substitutions, such as Cornish hens for squab or pork tenderloin for venison. Other sections include recipes for smoking game, marinades and rubs, sauces, and side dishes.
Color photographs of favorite dishes and archival photographs and etchings are included along with a list of nutritional data for each type of game, an unusual American game timeline, and an extensive resource list for game that can be delivered to your doorstep. Try just one recipe from Wild About Game, and you'll soon be wild about game yourself.
Customer Reviews:
This cookbook-reference book belongs in every complete culin.......1998-12-10
I am not a hunter. I won't even step on a spider, and open windows to let flies out. But as a food writer I am a big fan of game - both wild and farm-raised. Just don't ask me to catch my own. The new book, "Wild About Game" by Janie Hibler, is a cookbook plus more. Between the classy covers Hibler has produced a veritable treatise on game: how it is raised; information for each species on handling, seasoning, and best preparation tchniques; a varied group of both traditional and 90's recipes; nutrition data and mail-order game sources. What else does one ask from a cookbook? Recipes such as "slow-roasted duckling with red currant sauce", "venison with mustard-pepper marinade", and "pheasant with herb dumplings and chanterelles" are as comfortable for the home kitchen as in any five-star bistro. Just as nice as the recipes are the photos, historical prints and drawings, and petroglyphs that illustrate "Wild About Game". This reference-cookbook belongs in any complete culinary library.
Book Description
This study covers the world outlook for farm trough, hanging, and mechanical poultry feeders and waterers excluding turkey feeders and waterers across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Book Description
Two hot trends combine in one classic collection: the popular poncho and the hip craft of crochet. And these 33 designs take the versatile wardrobe staple to new heights of sophistication: they feature a range of neckline and hem variations, and come in a variety of yarns, including novelty types like ribbon, faux suede, and fur. Some are long, others short; some are dressy, others just made for a fancy night on the town. And the majority are one size fits all. With the help of a well-illustrated basics section, brand-new or out-of-practice crocheters can confidently pick up their needles and create an open-weave poncho with sleeves and cuffs, a wrap-up for winter, a shimmering gold lacy poncho, and other showstoppers.
Customer Reviews:
Great for techniques .......2007-09-02
I gave it a 4 only because I am not really a big fan of ponchos but I am overly impressed with all of the different stitches and techniques that are packed into this book. I am going to keep just for that purpose.
Not how I define "fabulous".......2006-07-31
The cover announces "new styles, new looks, new yarns". Okay, I'll give them the "new yarns" from when these ponchos came around the first time, but the looks and styles are just the same old same old.
just wonderful.......2006-03-18
I hesitated on buying this book because I didn't care for the earlier one he did called the New crochet. This is not only a wonderful book on crocheted ponchos but it's one of the best crochet books I've ever seen. Looking at the book is like watching the fireworks in Hongkong which just keep on coming. Here every poncho is a winner. Lots of interesting yarns although it's easy to substitute with their yarn equivalents. Great instructions on doing them including the difficult ones of which only 4 are in that category. Almost all the designers are new to me but according to their bios they've been crocheting from birth. Even if you're a beginner, buy this book now. How about doing another book on sweaters?
