Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars State of the art.......2002-10-25

This book is fantastic, and it has really set the standards for identification guides to come. Furthermore it has a size that makes it possible for you to bring it with you in the field.

The book has absolutely everything you need to know about seabirds. It is written in a very logical way and the plates are very good. The first 23 pages are an introduction to the subject, an overview of the glossary etc. Pages that makes it possible for you to understand the describtions of the birds later in the book - even if you are a beginner.

After the introduction there is 88 plates with drawings of all the seabirds in the world, including subspecies. All the plates are in colour and has been drawn from field notes and photos. The paintings are great and they will be a very good help when you are out there doing the birding.

After the section with the plates there is describtions of all the birds. After the describtions there are distribution maps. The describtions are very good, but the maps could have been slightly bigger, in order to give the reader a better chance to find out the (more or less) exact distribution of the species.

I haven't seen any books on seabirds that are compareable to this on. It is the state of the art when it comes to seabirds and fieldguides. You simply need this book if you are into seabirds. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to Seabirds........1998-11-18

Before Peter Harrison: "Hmm, that was some kind of sea-gull wasn't it?"
After Peter Harrison: "By Jove, what a fine example of a juvenile female intermediate-morph Pomarine Jaeger!"

5 out of 5 stars Another twaddle free classic.......2006-11-18

Any of Holling C. Holling books are worthy of a space on your personal library shelf. "Seabird" is a wonderful story celebrating the art of sailing as passed down generation by generation while exploring topics of geography, sea life, geology, and history. It engages the mind and investigates new interests. The illustrations are impressive and intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars Seabird a journey through time.......2000-09-29

I first read this book about thirty years ago, and would regularly re-visit it and other titles by this author, until I grew out of so called picture books. That I can still recall the pictures from Seabird, and the images that the cast in my mind testify to the quality of the writing. The journey from coastal whaling off Nantucket, to Greenland, the Pacific and the Yankee clippers that have forged their way into Legend, ending with one of the protaganists and his grandchild on a steamship in the 1920s will never leave me. Books like this should never die or be forgotten. You owe it to your children to make sure they read it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations and unforgettable story.......2000-05-03

I haven't forgotten it in the 20 years since I last read it. I'm ordering it right now to read it with my sons. This is a lyrical book that can survive a post-politically-correct viewing without losing any of its character.

5 out of 5 stars Age of Discovery.......1998-08-07

From its inception in the 1940's, Seabird has offered children of all ages a rich blend of New World nautical history, from tall-masted ships to steamships, all woven into an adventure of global exploration by sea. Highly recommended.

To this day Seabird evokes sights and sounds of whaling days and early coal-powered ships. I smell the greased hemp lines and the rendered blubber, the sulphurous fumes of steamers, kelp, and the sea itself.

The early youth, perhaps reading alone or read to, becomes a lean young sailor, develops character, and passes into old age through four generations -- a most remarkable transition when one knows so little of aging or history. Holling was a master author, first of Paddle to the Sea, later of more land-based novels, each rich in full-page color images.

If you're looking to add an Andean gull, Dalmatian pelican, Indian skimmer, or Fiji petrel to your life list, you'll want to have this beautifully illustrated photographic guide, with more than 740 plates, close to hand. Each of the 325-odd seabird species is described with a range map indicating principal breeding grounds, along with informative identification notes distinguishing seasonal coloration and commenting on characteristic behavior (such as the white-chinned petrel's penchant for trailing after ships in mid-ocean). The tubenose identification keys at the end of the book are notably well made, and the index contains a handy checklist for the dedicated spotter.

Book Description

This pocket-sized guide, now back in print in the United States, is unprecedented in its concept of illustrating photographically the more than 321 species of seabirds in the world. It comprises an exciting collection of over 740 seabird photographs by more than 300 of the world's leading seabird photographers and researchers. The majority of these photographs have never been published before, and include pictures of some of the rarest and most enigmatic birds in the world--species such as the recently discovered Amsterdam Albatross, the Chinese Black-headed Gull, the Relict Gull, and the near-extinct Short-tailed Albatross. Of special value are the flight shots of some of the most difficult-to-identify groups of birds.

Seabirds of the World represents easily the largest and most complete collection of seabird photographs ever published. It is complemented by a highly readable and succinct text intended to aid identification in the field.

Customer Reviews:

The is full of detailed colour photos and the text is informative and concise. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody interested in seabirds.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most complete guides of seabirds.......1999-08-18

This is one of the most complete guides to identifying seabirds. This book makes it easy to identify each species by providing photos, descriptions, illustrations & a helpful index of English names.

Two to four photographs of each bird are located in the front. English & scientific names are given below along with the page the text is on. The age of the bird & month the photo was taken are also noted.

Next, a text description is given for each seabird. This includes height, weight, traits in age group & their habits. Distribution is both described & shown on a map.

Each of the six seabird orders is described pointing out their different characteristics. There is also a detailed drawing of the topography of a seabird. Another large illustrated section points out the distinct features of some of the birds.

Book Description

This beautifully illustrated guide covers an unprecedented range of species that may be sighted along the coastline or offshore by the whale watcher, bird watcher, fisher, boating enthusiast, or natural history buff. Designed in a handy pocket size, the book provides concise information for identifying the invertebrates, mammals, birds, turtles, fish, sharks and rays, and even floating seaweeds and common algae that live along the Atlantic coast and offshore from North Carolina to the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

With range maps and text on pages directly opposite the full-color illustrations, the book makes identification of more than two hundred species of offshore wildlife quick and easy. Special features include full-page spreads to compare similar species of seabirds, and inserts to help identify whales by their blowhole patterns, diving, and other behaviors.

Those with an interest in ocean life know that surprises often appear dangling at the end of a fishing line, floating beside the boat, washed up on the shore, or flying overhead. This is the ultimate guide for those who are curious about such creatures and the marine environment in which they dwell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential, practical guide.......2006-02-19

Succint offshore guide that is perfect for outdoor seashore walks. Fits well in the pocket and has ideal illustrations packaged for convenient rapid reference. Text is pertinent and complements the colored illustrations in a concise relevant way. I can't wait for the next volume addressing the southern shores.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasure in every way.......2006-01-28

This book is a delight to look at: the illustrations are stunning, the design is clean and elegant. It's a delight to hold: the binding, the quality of the paper, the form factor. And it's a delight to read: the text is clear and concise, while packed with detail. For me, the most compelling aspect of the book is the illustrations, which Lynch brings to life on the pages. I unhesitantly recommend this book to anyone who takes pleasure in the wildlife of the North Atlantic.

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Work of Art!.......2006-01-26

The quality of the information is surpassed only by the quality of the illustrations. Craftsmanship through and through. I look forward to seeing more titles from these two talented people. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A gem of a field guide!.......2006-01-25

The most striking aspect of this book to me, after taking in the richly and lovingly painted portraits of shoreline wildlife, is the depth of the included species. This book does not merely include the usual suspects, but includes the smallest foundation creatures at the base of the shoreline food chain on up. From the informative maps, and intuitive layout, this book is an easily pocketable gem and a great reference. -David Bolinsky

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary illustrations, extraordinarily useful.......2006-01-22

This field guide has it all -- a comprehensive catalog of off-shore life, excellent organization, and absolutely extraordinary illustrations that prove that the best illustration is better than photography for depicting archetypes. The authors are renowned in their fields and their skill, experience and knowledge shows in every page. The best guide I've found.

      Book Description

To human eyes, the remote Aleutian Islands of Alaska look barren and rocky. The waters seem frigid, the high, sweeping winds intolerable, and the seas rolling. Yet to seabirds of the northern hemisphere, these waters are idyllic, a mosaic of habitats teeming with underwater food and alive with currents of wind for soaring. Join Sophie Webb on a voyage in search of seabirds. Just as she did with her award-winning My Season with Penguins, she once again inspires our curiosity. As she watches for, writes about, and paints the graceful mottled petrel, the huge black-footed albatross, or the clownish tufted puffin, she makes tangible the delicacy yet hardiness of these seabirdscreatures that have been on the earth much longer than humans yet remain vulnerable to disturbances in the health of the ocean.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids who dream of being Field Scientists.......2006-06-23

This is a fantastic book for showing grade schoolers what life as a biological field scientist would be like. Webb's journal format really brings the trip to life in a personal way. If you are a birdwatcher, you will enjoy this book as a well written trip report with great information on sea bird ecology and behaviour.

The information is great, but the illustrations are even better. The book is filled with sea bird paintings from the author that help her share the amazing spectacles she has seen while in the field.

Great book, quick read, beautiful illustrations.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2005-01-03

Quite simply a joy to read. The paintings are wonderful and truly depict the variety of marine life that Ms Webb writes about.

The cards in Ms. Nakazawa's book are beautiful, and although they look simple the easiest one will take hours to complete.

I found the instructions a bit hard to follow -- what is Duma paper? Bristol paper? They're required for almost every project. I am very curious if any typical crafter has been able to make her cards look as nice as those in the picture.
