Excellent Resource.......2007-01-11
Miller's book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about sailors' valentines. She thoroughly covers the history of valentines, in an engaging manner that imparts a good deal of information. She has compiled a large collection of full page photographs of valentines from across the years - just beautiful! We found a wonderful artist who makes sailors valentines, and chose several to give as gifts, with this book accompanying them. A great read and a visual treat!
A kaleidoscope of beautiful shells.......2007-01-09
A Fantastic book to take to the beach. You will never look at shells the same way after studying these "sailor's valentines." I just wonder what the recipients thought when they were presented with these incredible works of art.
Intricate Beauty.......2006-11-12
This book is a pictorial feast for the eyes. The folk art of Sailors' Valentines has been captured in all its historical beauty. The intricate detail of each of the pictured works is simply amazing, and as an artist and craftsperson, I truly appreciate the skill and beautiful symmetry as documented in this book. The colors and photography are superb and the historical background and information are clearly detailed.
SAILOR'S VALENTINE'S ~ Their Journey Through Time.......2006-11-03
I found this to be a beautiful book. The photography and skill of the artists featured is remarkable. It is an inspiration for all artists (whether just beginning or established) who lovingly work on or collect sailor's valentines.
Sailors' Valentines Their Journey Through Time.......2006-07-18
A beautiful, well researched book. Very tastfull with the best photographs of Sailors' Valentines. A one of a kind keepsake.
Book Description
The story of Sailors' Valentines evokes romance-majestic sailing ships and long sea voyages, adventures in the New World, and daydreams of loved ones across wide oceans. It has been said that sailors made the Valentines at sea for cherished friends and family to pass the time and to bestow as gifts upon their return.
Very rare and highly collectible, Sailors' Valentines are octagonal wooden boxes made of Spanish cedar or mahogany. They contain intricate, stunning mosaics made primarily of colorful shells and often incorporate sentimental messages. The mosaics are covered in glass and often hinged together in pairs. When closed, the shell work is hidden and the glass protected so that the Valentines can be stored safely for travel. Now fetching extraordinary prices at auction and antiques fairs-as much as $35,000-they were actually made by craftsmen at the height of the Victorian Age in Barbados, a familiar port of call for many American and European ships.
Now, for the first time ever, these highly prized and rarely seen antiques are presented at almost life size in this innovative and stunning package that mirrors the shape of an actual Valentine. Here are over fifty magnificent examples, photographed especially for this book and beautifully reproduced in detail. Page after page, this octagonal volume, which comes in a deluxe cloth keepsake box, captures the experience of holding one of these magnificent treasures in your hands. Avid collector John Fondas shares his expertise on the history, making, and collecting of Valentines in his introductory essay as well as provides a detailed listing of the shells used in their construction.
A collectible itself, Sailors' Valentines will delight shell collectors, antiques lovers, Victoriana fans, and romantics of all ages.

Sailors' Valentines.......2006-07-18
A cleaverly package book. Nice pictures of old Valentines, however using one with a questionable picture spoils the entire book.
The Sailors' Valentines.......2006-01-15
Very interesting, good history, and enjoyable reading. I reccomend for ages 9 on. One will want to travel to the beach and begin a hobby in shell collecting just to build a Sailors' Valentine.
Espe-shell-y nice.......2005-08-03
A very beautiful, high-quality book. I first saw it at a kaleidoscope show and after a look at a few of the pictures, you will understand why. The photos are exquisite and it all comes in a unique presentation box. Well worth the price.
be warned.......2005-05-17
This is a beautiful and different book. But, be warned if you are giving it as a gift to someone. The book comes wrapped in plastic and I did not flip through the book before giving it. There is a VERY inappropriate picture of "naked people up to something" in it. Fortunately the gift recipient thought it funny as opposed to being offended.
STUNNING!!!!!.......2003-07-11
I just gave this as a gift to my sister, who's thinking about designing and making a sailor's valentine. She's THRILLED! What a wonderful book for the collector, crafter, or antique fancier. Beautifully done. Fondas identifies many of the shells used in these examples. A breathtaking volume that's sure to become a collector's item in its own right.

Great stories!.......1999-07-09
I have a suspicion that Sebastian Junger had this book open next to him when he was writing "The Perfect Storm." But there is one critical difference: Craig Moodie, in this work of fiction, paints his characters far more truly and originally than Mr. Junger did in his work of non-fiction. Anyone who has read Junger's book should read this one to see what life at the mercy of the sea is really like.

On an extended deployment during this special occasion, a sailor has decided to tell a little story of his life. A bond that made him successful throughout his childhood is now linking him to a very beautiful girl that he met in high school. The undying crush that he has for her keeps on growing stronger every day and he wants it to be revealed for he sees no future without her. He hopes everybody will have nothing but happiness in their relationships, more importantly he is dreaming to see his parents reunited for they have been separated more than a decade. Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing but may help women with flat figures.......2004-01-24
After reading the customer reviews, I purchased this book. I was extremely disappointed, as the authors address only basic fitting for slight adjustments in flat patterns, which are not usually helpful for adjusting to persons with real shape problems and especially not helpful for those with a very large bust. Also, the book does not address the many small adjustments that are necessary for a really great fit. I would suggest it only to those who are able to use commercial flat (vs multi-seamed and contoured)patterns and need only small adjustments.
Outstanding! Fitting solutions not found elsewhere!.......2002-01-24
I've been sewing for twenty some years. In that time I read lots of books on fitting and gone to various classes. This is the ONLY place I have gotten information on how to adjust a dolman and a raglan sleeve for a larger then standard bust.
This book assumes you have no fitting skills. It tells you all the tools you will need. They tell about fitting shells and why shells from different pattern companies might serve you better. The authors tell you how to adjust the pattern for your figure. This book will give you the information you need to get a better fit.
I Love This Book!.......2000-07-28
This book helped me (finally!) to understand how patterns worked and why things I had made were not turning out as I had hoped. There is quite a bit of explaination about why you're doing things. Clear easy to follow pitcures and instructions. I made a great pair of pants and will turn to it every time I have a new project.
Clothes for real bodies.......1997-09-27
Real women, with normal figures of all types, are the key feature in this fitting book. Unlike fashion magazines and dress pattern catalogs which use slim, young models to make the CLOTHES look great, this book shows how to fit clothes to make the average WOMAN look great! Sewing skills are needed but once you have followed the directions and made the suggested pattern adjustments as a master pattern, you can adjust any commercial pattern to fit you perfectly with very little fuss. This is especially helpful for older woman whose figures have changed over time. But any woman can have "tailor-made" fit with this book. Try it!

Cicero Knows!.......2007-05-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this great piece of literature & ageless philosophy. His wisdom shows that aging is a delightful treat....if you've spent your younger years wisely.
Cicero the Man.......2007-02-23
I am a huge fan of Cicero and have read many of his speeches and other writings. He is easily one of the most interesting people in the Ancient World and what sets him apart is how modern he is in his opinions and perspectives. However, this is not Cicero at his best. This was written shortly before his murder and is a series of short essays reflecting on growing old. It is written in a gossipy style and he is clearly writing for his contemporaries and references people and events with the expectation that the reader is familiar with these people and events.
The translation by Franklin was retained so the spelling and capitalization is that of the 18th Century which can be a little distracting, but the notes by James Logan were appended in the back of the book and in many ways are more interesting than Cicero's writings. Neverheless, Cicero has much to say that is worth saying and just as worthwhile today as it was when he wrote it.
This is a paper back book but exceedingly well done, with an embossed cover and high quality paper. At $49 I think it is rather pricey and I confess I got my copy as a gift. I gave this book four stars because of the distracting spelling, but I did enjoy the book.
Customer Reviews:
A much deeper book than you might think - very good read.......2006-11-30
This book was suggested to me by a friend with his highest recommendation and it lived up to my expectations. While on the surface the book may seem to be about finances and money, it is so much more than that. Although, even at the level of money, it is still a very valuable read for those wanting to put their finances in order. For, according to Crosson, to put your finances in order, you have to order your life and priorities as well.
The primary theme of Crosson's book is that we need to be deliberate about the training of our children (or our posterity) in a spiritual sense. Crosson's idea is that how we use and manage our money is one tool that we can use to train our children - and if that tool is misused, Crosson has seen the devastation and heartache that it can cause. As a financial planner, Crosson is sharing not simply financial strategies, but life lessons and plans that will help nurture godly young men and women more devoted to the cause of Christ because of his insight and knowledge being put into practice.
Crosson hits one issue very hard over and over again - how we use (or invest) our time. The ability to use money to buy time is such an attractive concept - but Crosson shows how good intentions in this area have turned to poor decisions - the use of some "time-saving" devices have enabled us to waste more time, or work longer hours, or even have been the cause of a disconnect between parents and children - Crosson warns against falling prey to the misuse of technology. Crosson also drives home the point that time, not money, is our most precious commodity - and something that cannot be purchased in any greater quantities than what others have regardless of our income or financial status - we all have 24 hours in a day to use how we choose - and if we are not deliberately carving our time for our posterity, training our children will be done in bits and pieces with a hit or miss strategy that is unreliable and detrimental to our children.
In the final couple of chapters, Crosson warns against retarding our children with ease and comfort making them weak, unable (or unwilling) to work and earn a living. In their desire to make things "better for our children," far too many parents end up actually making things considerably worse literally crippling their children with cash!
A Life Well Spent is a good read for every parent and I would highly recommend this book to every dad. I would also highly recommend the book to those Christians blessed with significant financial abilities - along with that blessing comes equally high responsibility to use that treasure to draw closer to the Lord, to be dependent upon Him for your strength and guidance, and to support the work and ministry of the Lord with the treasure God has given.
A Message Well Received.......2001-09-19
This is a must read for our culture. Without condemning wealth, the author beautifully directs your thoughts and planning to balance the quest for prosperity with the quest for investing in one's posterity. Wealth can be well utilized for the latter when accompanied by deliberate consideration of one's view of money and "what's important" in life. Great book!
A highly recommended selection from a mentor........1999-07-29
My old Texas A&M Tennis Coach, David Kent, who speaks regularly to various groups, recommends this book highly to all people he talks to. I hope you can find this book for me. Amy Closs

Dads, you need this one!!!.......2003-09-27
Rob Parsons provides incredible insight into the busy life of fathers. His thought provoking suggestions as well as his pointers for separating work from home life have made a tremendous impact on my relationship with my kids. They're only small once, so take the time to listen, learn and be a part of their daily lives. Don't let the lyrics to Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle" ring true in your life!
Easy to read and very profound. Great gift for new Fathers........1999-05-22
Mr. Parsons provides an extremely refreshing reminder of what it takes to be a Father. The book is geared to help Father's overcome "busy-ness", how to avoid the future regret often associated with preoccupation and provides wonderful direction in meeting the needs of children.
Every Parent should read this book.......1998-10-22
My wife and I learned so much from this short book, that we now give this book as a gift to our friends, and especially new parents. It really made us focus on what is most important in our lives ..... our children. No one ever said on their death bed, "I wish I would have spent one more day at the offce." It is a short book ... read it. Your kids will thank you.
A must-read for every man committed to success as a father.......1998-09-05
This short book uses numerous stories to paint emotional word-pictures of values that every dad shares in life and enumerates the key forces that constantly attempt to relegate those values to the back-burner. In a very encouraging and non-threatening manner, this book articulates these values in a way that enables the reader to get a handle on them that won't be easily pried loose by the many demands on our time. It does not deal with parenting techniques, but with paradigm shifts and focus. It enables the reader to mentally fast-forward their lives 10-20 years ahead and determine if the choices they are making today will then be viewed as wise choices or as deep regrets.
The author so vividly points out that we have only so many opportunities with our children to share special moments together and that this window of childhood closes so suddenly and unexpectedly. We are encouraged to try not to miss one of them - herein lies the memories that will be treasured for a lifetime by you and your child. We may be very astute at grasping every career advancement opportunity that presents itself to us; this book challenges us to not allow the quiet windows of opportunity with our children to pass by, as if these windows will never close. We are shown in a very realistic way that without a concerted effort on our part, time will play its trick on us, and the day will arrive that the father now has time, but the window of opportunity is shut.
This book will help each of us realize that a 'slower day' is not coming, and that if we want to build bonds with our children that will last, we must 'seize the day' today. We are reminded that somebody else will one day take our place at the office, but nobody else will ever take our place as father.
I have personally benefited tremendously from reading this book, and I continue to reread it each month in an effort to keep fresh in my mind the things that are most important in life. Someone has said that the good things in life are often the mortal enemy of the best things in life. This book is a constant reminder of the difference between the two.
