Product Description
The early Lambeth figures of John Broad, Leslie Harradine, Mark Marshall and George Tinworth continue to make gains in the market place. It is almost impossible to find a Tinworth figure for less than $2,000, while his classic pieces are in the five figure category. Nokes Vellum figures, produced at Burslem, have increased in value over 10th edition prices.
The early figures in the HN Series, from HN1 to approximately HN2000, have basically increased in value. This, of course, does not include the long run figures such as the Balloon Lady, Top o the Hill, etc. Character figures such as the Carpet Seller, Orange Vendor and The Cobbler are experiencing a weakening demand.
It is the middle section of HN numbers from approximately HN2000 to HN3000 that have come under pressure from on-line auction sales. It is the supply of figures in this bracket which experienced the great demand of the 1960s and 1970s as the pre-boomers entered the collectable field with gusto. It is these collections that are now being offered for sale on on-line auctions resulting in the supply overtaking the demand. The HN Series of the last twenty years, lets say HN3000 to HN4800, are basically short issued and are either holding or increasing in value.
More figures than ever are being issued annually. In 2005 over 125 new HN numbered figures were issued. However, the number of limited edition pieces is increasing, with the issue period being shorter, which makes an interesting case for the secondary market.
The 2005 figure Lawrence of Arabia (HN4695) by Alan Maslankowski, with a limited edition of 50 pieces carried on the modern Prestige series which began in 2002. We now have four figures in this series.
Other series introduced in 2005 are Best of the Classics, Chic Trends, Natural Beauty, Petites and Street Vendors.
All prices have been reviewed and updated for the 11th edition. In some cases, between markets we have the foreign exchange difference playing a major factor.
The 11th edition is the largest ever with the body of the book being 544 pages, plus 32 pages of colour.

The book is very good and has photos of all but the latest figurines. The prices in the book would have to be considered "full retail". I found many figurines for sale in mint condition for 1/2 the book price or less. It is well organized with easy indexing by name or number.
Great Resource For Royal Doulton Figurines Identifications/Value........2006-11-11
This volume is enormously helpful in identifying & valuing Royal Doulton Figurines. Sorted by series (e.g. HN or M) & series # (4-digit number following series) it is very easy to use! Also it has cross-references which are very helpful when you have a name/title instead of the series #.
This book would have gotten a 5-star rating from me if it did not have missing HN series #'s, most of which correspond to animal figurines. Since I am interested in a FEW animals, it would have been nice to have them all in one volume! (I don't really want to buy ANOTHER reference just for the few animals I'm interested in!)
Also, if you are a Bunnykins collector, that info is also missing from this volume. (I'm not, so it wasn't a problem for me.)

the beginning or advanced collector. Each HN series figure is
pictured, described, and priced with artist noted. An excellent
resource for appraising your collection. The company history
section is fascinating. Well worth the price!
Royal Doulton Marketplace.......2005-09-20
I use this book to establish a fair market value on my very large collection of Royal Doulton Figurines. It also is helpful when "shopping" for more of these items. I highly recommend this to all Doulton lovers.

The three new series added to the 3rd edition are: The Charles Noke Collection, a tribute to Noke, whose classic model of a Polar Bear Monter and Her Cub was remodelled in 2001, by Robert Tabbenor, and issued in a limited edition of 200; the second series, modelled by Alan Maslankowski, Art is Life, contains beautifully sculpted animals such as wolves, bears, and horses; the third series, Burslem Artwares, contains the majestic flambé T'ang Horse and several other flambé pieces.
What appears to be the most buoyant niche in the Animal market today is the stoneware models of mice and frogs created by George Tinworth. The prices realized of these classic sculptures seem to escalate continuously when they appear at auction. There are well over 60 models created by
George Tinworth.
Each listing provides the model number, size, colour, designer, dates of issue and discontinuation, and the different glaze varieties that can be found on certain models. More than 1,200 illustrations on more than 475 pages results in a catalogue that covers the complete range of Royal Doulton Animals.

The eighth edition of Storybook Figurines, A "Charlton Standard Catalogue," is completely updated with recent releases and current market values. Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, and Beswick storybook figurines are illustrated and their technical data listed.
Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The final eight page colour section covers the Royal Doulton issues of the Winnie the Pooh collection, 69 figures are illustrated in this group.
The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Eight new releases were added to the Brambly Hedge chapter, while nine were added to the Winnie the Pooh section. Millennium Collectables added three new releases to their popular line of 20th Century Advertising Collectables.
The fast moving collectable market, brought on by the on-line auctions, is instrumental in the Storybook catalogue now being published on an annual basis. Price movements now dictate that if collectors wish to be current, they must have a current program.

Psychiatrist Peter Kramer's book Listening to Prozac created a sensation when it was released in 1993, and it remains the most fascinating look at the new generation of antidepressants. Kramer found that the changes in brain chemistry brought about by Prozac had a wide variety of effects, often giving users greater feelings of self-worth and confidence, less sensitivity to social rejection, and even a greater willingness to take risks. He cites cases of mildly depressed patients who took the drug and not only felt better but underwent remarkable personality transformations--which he (along with many of the book's readers) found disconcerting, leading him to question whether the medicated or unmedicated version was the person's "real" self. Kramer has been criticized for seeming to advocate Prozac over psychotherapy or as a way of achieving personality changes not directly related to the disease of depression, such as improving one's social confidence or job performance. In fact, he makes no such recommendations; he was simply the first popular writer to suggest that these changes might occur. (He answers those critics in the afterword to this 1997 edition.) For anyone considering taking antidepressants or wanting a better understanding of the effects these drugs are having on our society, Listening to Prozac is a very important book.

SSRIs shown to be Harmful in many people........2007-06-13
SSRIs are dangerous. Thats a fact. Frankly I am surprised by all of the comments praising this book, the people writing these reviews must all be psychiatrists wanting to believe in the fantasy of this "miracle drug." The truth is srris have terrible side effects, and can change your whole soul and personality. I know this from my own experience. Sure, yhe medications help at first, but then they turn on you, and at that point your psychiatrist doesn't want to hear about it and suddenly they don't care about you at all. In many cases SSRIs make matters worse, this is called-clinical worsening of depression and/or changes in personality, its on the label that comes with the medication. And what about the link between SSRIs and violent behavior, there is well documented information showing a direct relation to SSRIs increasing violent behaviors in patients. And what about case reports pouring through the internet of people revealing there horror stories involving these drugs. There is a very dark shadow side to these medications. In some people SSRIs can accually cause pssd(post ssri sexual dysfunction), in which case you loose most of your sex drive-permanently.
I'm not saying they don't help some people, but to look at only one side-the good side- of a medication is extremely dangerous and puts patients in danger and that is what worries me. If you want the other side of ssri medication, go to youtube and watch the video entitled SEROXAT, or simply start researching it on the internet. It is dangerous stuff.

This is a book that will give hope and comfort to those considering medication. It did to me.
All of the counter-arguments about flawed clinical trials and risks could be true - but it just doesn't matter. Drugs have indisputably helped people overcome depression. These drugs have been around for a long time. There are side effects and risks, but that is true of *every worthwhile decision* in life. In order to make progress, you _have to take risks_.
Maybe you'll develop diabetes, but maybe you'll have developed that anyway because of the overeating habit you have because of your depression. Or maybe you'll get hit by a bus in 2 years. Or maybe, because you acted to do something about feeling bad, you'll have a much happier life between now and the time when your life, as all lives do (now, at least) comes to an end.
The Rest of the Story.......2006-08-05
This is a very famous and a very influential book. This was not the first time I checked the book out of the library but I now know much more about antidepressants and the related issues than I did when I first became familiar with Kramer's book. What I found on my quick survey of the book this time amazed me. This is not a book supported by research. It is a book of stories. The stories, one after the other, are about Kramer's patients (Kramer is a psychiatrist) and how taking Prozac dramatically transformed lives overnight. Consider these four examples.
1. Sam: "Sam not only recovered from his depression, he declared himself better than well. He felt unencumbered, more vitally alive, less pessimistic. Now he could complete projects in one draft, whereas before he sketched and sketched again. His memory was more reliable, his concentration keener. His memory was more reliable, his concentration keener. Every aspect of his work went more smoothly. He appeared more poised, more thoughtful, less distracted. He was able to speak at professional gatherings without notes.(Page x.)
2. Sally: After four months on Prozac, she looked brighter, calmer, self-assured, in control of herself. The most important effect of the medication, Sally felt was that it cleared her head...After ten months...she negotiated a small promotion and pay raise at a time when the bank was cutting back staff...More remarkable was the change to her private life. She started going to dances...(Page 147.)
3. William M: The patient's low self-esteem, which had been present since his earliest childhood, began to disappear...On medication William M. experienced a sense of self-worth superior to any he had felt before. (Page 203.)
4. Ms. B: For the first time in her memory she felt perfectly relaxed and happy sitting at home reading books or listening to music and felt less of the free-floating anxiety that was previously quelled by going out...Off Prozac, Ms. B. bar-hopped in search of men. Prozac moderated her sense of aloneness and allowed her to enjoy a variety of social settings.
Dozens of other examples could be cited. The point is, this is essentially the book. It is a book which convinces the reader of the almost magic power of Prozac by sharing stories like these. What is disturbing is that I now know the truth. Research investigations have found that the power of antidepressants has increased dramatically. They are now more effective because our belief in the power of a pill to cure social shyness, anxiety, depression, and a bad temper has increased dramatically. We have come to believe, as Kramer puts it, "biology is destiny" (page xiv). No where does Kramer explain that the longest of the clinical trial used to get approval of Prozac to market was only 8 weeks long. No where does he share that a tranquilizer was given to study subjects and the other tricks used to make the effectiveness of the drug appear greater than it really is. The dangers of long-term use (diabetes, Parkinson's disease, permanent muscle jerking, etc.) are never discussed. (Of course, these problems were still unknown when Kramer wrote.) See Timothy Scott's wonderful, and unlike Kramer's book, carefully documented book America Fooled: The Truth About Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, and How We've Been Fooled to find the dangers as well as what does bring good mental health. Yes, this book has been influential. Thus, Kramer bears some of the responsibilty for the myth surrounding antidepressants. (They do not work as well as exercise even--numerous studies.) It's funny how, as our knowledge grows, a great book beomes a harmful book, but it is just that.
A Good Book.......2006-02-28
This is a great book to read if you want to know about Prozac. It isn't written with all the medical lingo to where you don't understand. It is written for the average person and easy to understand and comprehend. Loaded with tons of great information. Highly Recommended.
Still the book of choice on subject of antidepressents and "Cosmetic Psychiatry".......2006-01-05
This is another of those books that I have lent and given to many people dealing with mild to major mental illness and wondering what to do about it. This book gives the reader a better understanding of what ways the chemistry of the brain might manifest itself and shows case studies of what has worked for some people. The book discusses the morality of the use of medication in functioning adults. After all the years that have passed since the initial publication, I have yet to find a better or more reader friendly book on this important subject.
