Book Description
By uniquely using Buddhist teachings, Reinventing the Wheel assesses the personal and communal costs of our global economic and technological commitments. Hershock urges reinvention of the technological "wheel," and, at the same time, acknowledges the need for new forms of practice suited to our rapidly evolving social, political, and economic circumstances. His persuasive presentation urges the skillful spinning of a new "wheel of the dharma."

i liked it.......2004-03-24
This book is not an incredibly new critique of western culture, but does have a new take on the root of our problems and a solution: He presents the major problem of modern society as that of a need for control represented by and as technology. His explanation of colonialism is a bit nostalgic but he does make a lot of valid points. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but it does take a little effort to sift through. It helps to read a few times to get his arguments clear in your head, but a lot of it is just examples of control in society and the problems that creates, which is ultimately a neverending cycle (buddhists will recognize this as samsara). I especially recommend chapters 5, 7, and the last one
Impact of technology interwoven with our consciousness.......1999-08-31
Telephones, TVs, jet planes, automobiles, computers, drugs, plastics... technology has become ever more deeply embedded in our lives. Technology is not just a bunch of tools piling up around us, but a pattern of activity that includes us too. Buddhism teaches us that we are actually cross-sections of such patterns of world activity. As technology radically restructures those patterns, it profoundly restructures the deep layers of our being. Many discussions of technology start from the same control-oriented dualistic perspective that gave rise to technology, and are therefore limited to superficiality. Hershock clearly points out how we are caught in a vicious circle, where our efforts to control our experience cut out the very meaningfulness we are searching for. A milestone contribution, demonstrating the vital relevance of Buddhist thought and practice to crucial issues of today.

Book Description
As inventive as instructive, information wheels-or volvelles-have been used since the fourteenth century to measure, record, predict, and calculate everything form time and space to military history and recipes. In this fascinating book, designer and critic Jessica Helfand offers and in-depth look at these unique artifacts, which are not only clever and amusing-where else could you dial-in ingredients to concoct "Creamed Oysters and Celery"?-but, Helfand argues, relevant as a model for modern interactive design. From circular mathematical slide rules to Captain Marvel phonetic decoders; from nuclear bomb blast calculators to gestational breeding planners; and from astronomical planispheres to presidential trivia plotters, Reinventing the Wheel demonstrates the astonishing range and remarkable utility of these ingenious "interactive" tools.

I object: No Obverse.......2007-05-20
Fun book, brilliantly layed out, but would have liked to see the backsides. And really, the photographers were so lazy much of the time to not get the info disks in register with the die-cuts. I presume this was the author's collection or from like-minded collectors and/or conservators. This flouting of attention to detail is conspicuously disconjugate to the demanding esthete of this type of person. Enjoyable none the less. Despite my pleasure, in reference to my conclusion, I reject a reverse: I object; no obverse. Julian Mason, Beaufort SC
Beautiful book.......2006-10-29
bought the book for the pictures and the paragraph about each one. haven't read most of the text and don't particularly care to.
a shoulder surfer actually thought some of the wheels were real, the reproductions are that good.
4 out of 5 because I didn't read/rate the text.
Graphically outstanding. Text is academic, dull and ill-formed........2006-01-04
Jessica Helfand appears caught here between her inner love of collecting trivia, and her academic role: and while the graphics put on display her remarkable collection of wheels and volvelles her text unfortunately veers toward academic pontificating of the worst order as she uses her collection in an attempt to ruminate on how we see life, and how linearity as in the design and format of books (left-to-right, one page after another) is confining compared to the multidimensional viewpoint afforded by circles. Helfand's writing is rigidly locked into the very paradigm she criticises, and in the end her more human Foreword is by far the most interesting text in this handsome hard back volume.
Handsome? Graphically, this is an outstanding book - well-designed, beautifully typeset, graphics gorgeously reproducing the collection of wheels, even the paper seems especially chosen - but I found Helfand's logic and her weak arguments quite frustrating. It reads like the first draft of a thesis - before the student's overseeing Professor has had a real go at the author. ("Come on Jessica - you've made a leap in logic here!")
So this is one book where the pictures can do all the talking. The text and the often redundant captions (they describe what we can already see, thank you) is frankly superfluous.
Reinventing the Wheel.......2005-08-02
interesting trivia and great for a collector of wheels but I was looking more for a visual mapping type of collection. Nice book for nostalgia seekers.
Very good Research.......2003-07-15
This book is an excellent research on the subjet with very good examples. Interesting for designers.
Book Description
"It's going to change the world."-Dean Kamen
They came from across the country and from the lab down the hall. Some left behind lucrative jobs, some moved their families. Each hand-picked engineer was drawn by the same irresistible lure: the chance to work with a brilliant, eccentric inventor on a secret project. Dean Kamen was already a millionaire with an impressive list of medical inventions to his name, but none of them had excited him like his newest world-changer. Extraordinary things were happening inside his New Hampshire laboratory, things no one could find out about-at least not yet.
This is the unforgettable story of "Ginger," officially named the Segway Human Transporter: a self-balancing, electric-powered people mover that Kamen called "magic sneakers." With the pacing and excitement of a suspense novel, Code Name Ginger documents the birth of a marvelous new technology and the feats of its remarkable inventor, his team of engineers, and the financiers who pursued them.
Steve Kemper was the only journalist granted complete access to the Ginger project as the machine was designed, prototyped, and readied for manufacture. He takes us inside a world of ingenious engineering, in which improbable ideas become real: wheelchairs climb stairs, scooters balance on two wheels, polluted water is made clean. He reveals Kamen as few have seen him: in the heat of invention, racing against time, caught between his idealistic beliefs and his obsession to make Ginger a commercial success. He chronicles the wheeling and dealing of high-rolling investors and New Economy kingpins from John Doerr to Steve Jobs. And he delivers vital business lessons about leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, and innovation while recounting a technological adventure that will be studied and argued about for decades.
For anyone who has ever wondered what it was like inside Thomas Edison's lab or the Wright Brothers' garage, here is the twenty-first century equivalent. Step inside Dean Kamen's laboratory and discover the thrills and risks of invention. The Segway's story, like the machine itself, is appreciated best by climbing aboard and taking a ride.
AUTHORBIO: Steve Kemper is a journalist whose work has appeared in Smithsonian, National Geographic, and other magazines. He lives in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Book Critique.......2007-01-04
I picked this book from a list for a book critique for my management principles course. I am really glad I choose this book. The book is very well written. It gives you an almost voyueristic look at the development of the segway and a kind of radical and unheard of management style. The author had an amazing opertunity when he experieenced this and does a great job of relaying it in the book. He even did this with not much bias towards the segway company. The book seems to almost be like a movie playing infront of you. You feel as if you are there with everyone during the development.
How not to conquer the World........2005-11-01
If you are an engineer you will be unhappy with the scattershot presentation of the design & engineering challenges and their resolution. If you are interested in the marketing decisions behind the introduction of the Segway you will find that the planning was amateur and the execution thin. There is little to learn because pre-launch research into the views, beliefs, attitudes and needs of eventual buyers was ruled out due to an hysterical fear of revealing the nature of the product.
Where this book does excel is in giving readers a very real feel for the pace of the development work, the excitement and passion of some very talented engineers and the tensions and frustrations they felt working for a man who can only be described as extra-ordinary. Like many business case studies, this story illustrates what happens when the drive, courage and brains that, under constrained financial conditions and anonymity, delivers wondrous innovation; can, in the end, produce nothing more than the alloted 15 minutes of Fame when the constraints are gone and the dream surrenders to the ego.
Great.......2003-08-13
A unique insight into the development of not only a new product, but a new industry. Whether you like the Segway or not, the book gives you behind the scenes look that most people never get to see, and it's a type of revolutionary technology (maybe not the application) that only comes around every few decades.
Nice read, but lacking in a few ways..........2003-08-12
I don't own a Segway, but I find it (and DEKA) interesting from an engineering perspective. This book is a largely non-technical view into the process of creating it.
Is it a good read? Yes. Would I recommend it to others interested in the topic? Yes. Could it be improved? Yes.
I wish it were more technical, which seems to be a reasonable request since the readership should be largely engineers and business people, not a general audience. It also needed a section of photos and/or diagrams of Ginger as the engineering progressed and to illustrate various features discussed in the book. (For example, the handle is described as W-shaped and then it becomes redesigned as M-shaped, but it wasn't clear if that was from the perspective of the rider or looking at it head-on.)
I also thought that the writing was awkward in places, and found the few transitions from third-person observer to first-person participant to be jarring. I do recognize that the author's presence was key to those few events, but it was jarring to the flow of the page nonetheless.
So, overall, I liked it, but given that it will probably be the only book on the topic, I wish it were better...
Nice Read!.......2003-08-01
Enjoyed the book. Would have liked to have read a bit more about the engineer's and the engineering process, and it would have been nice to have seen some rough sketches of Ginger at different stages. Nonetheless, I think Dr. Kemper did a nice job.
Book Description
The Wheel of Rebirth is one of the most basic and popular images in Buddhist visual culture. For nearly two thousand years, artists have painted it onto the porches of Buddhist temples; preachers have used it to explain karmic retribution; and philosophers have invoked it to illuminate the contrast between ignorance and nirvana. In Reinventing the Wheel, noted scholar Stephen F. Teiser explores the history and varied interpretations of the Wheel of Rebirth, a circle divided into sections depicting the Buddhist cycle of transmigration.
Combining visual evidence with textual sources, Reinventing the Wheel shows how the metaphor of the wheel has been interpreted in divergent local traditions, from India to Tibet, Central Asia, and China. Teiser deftly shows how written and painted renditions of the wheel have animated local architectural sites and religious rituals, informing concepts of time and reincarnation and acting as an organizing principle in the cosmology and daily life of practicing Buddhists.
Engaging and accessible, this uniquely pan-Buddhist tour will appeal to anyone interested in Buddhist culture, as well as to scholars of religious studies, art history, architecture, philosophy, and textual studies.
Customer Reviews:
history, varieties, and meanings of the wheel symbol in Buddhism.......2007-06-19
Teiser--D. T. Sukuki professor in Buddhist Studies at Princeton--puts the classical source of the wheel as the preferred and eventually conventional symbol for the Buddhist spiritual concept of a series of lifetimes for nearly every person with the Mulasarvastivada school of Indian Buddhism. Although this school is only one of many schools of Buddhism which have grown up throughout Asia over centuries, the location of the Mulasarvastivada school in north-central India where Buddhism originated and the time of its formation in the early though not the initial development of Indian Buddhism gave its teachings and practices an exceptional canonical authority. "[A]s the canonical story of the wheel of rebirth shows, the vinaya [the 'voluminous canon of monastic discipline'] provided the narrative authority for a collective enterprise that drew lay people to Buddhist temples and sent monks and nuns out into the lay community."
The circular shape of the wheel is the basic configuration uniting this central symbol of Buddhism as it spread throughout Asia in the following centuries. Like the cross of Christianity, the wheel of Buddhism has become identified with this world religion. But different features of the wheel symbolizing different concepts and tenets of Buddhism have been emphasized in different regions and different times. The wheel's hub, spokes, and rim are three "compositional elements" highlighted by Teiser; with the hub, for instance, signifying both a focus and "what drives the wheel, what makes it go around." The fourth "property of the wheel is that it marks off an inside from an outside." This most complex compositional element of a wheel represents the closed system involving endless cycles of death and rebirth, but also indicates transcendence beyond this since the Buddhist wheel is always in the context of a square frame putting the wheel into perspective and suggesting that there is a realm of spirituality outside of it. "The point of the wheel, so to speak, is to move outside of it."
With keen aesthetic discernment, extensive historical scholarship, and sensitivity to Buddhist spirituality, this work seamlessly studies all significant aspects of the Buddhist wheel found in old Buddhist temples while bringing in relevant dimensions of Buddhist spirituality. Art, symbology, history, culture, and spirituality are interwoven in an engrossing, enlightening manner.

Book Description
Reinventing the Wheel is a timely study that examines Marx's and Durkheim's perspectives on crime and criminals. These two seminal thinkers in economics and sociology wrote extensively on the causes and effects of crime, their implications for society, and the nature of social justice. Ni He provides a detailed analysis of their views and evaluates their applicability for contemporary research in the field of criminology. Theoretically rich and empirically sound, this work will stimulate sociologists, criminologists, and social historians.

Reconnect with Your Own Power.......2007-09-17
It was an honor to work with Meria Heller in editing this book. In the process, I learned how to envision what the world would look like if we all began to harness our own power for the common good, rather than the personally selfish. This book explains such simple methods to help us concentrate and focus our mental and emotional energies. Mornings, noons, and nights go better when I include the Universal Wheel in my thought processes. Deborah M. Alexander

In the spirit of Rube Goldberg, pinball, and bubble-gum machines, Alan and Gill Bridgewater present ten wildly complex marble-action woodworking projects that are as entertaining to make as they are to play with. Contraptions such as the Marble Deceleration Honeycomb Maze, Perpetual Random Number Shuffler, and Marble Rotator Finger-Touch Tumbler Labyrinth can each be constructed easily in a weekend, but in finished form will baffle those who dare to dally with them. Step-by-step instructions with accompanying photos and detailed plans make construction easy. Metric conversions included.
Customer Reviews:
Is okay if you want to do everything by hand........2007-02-01
In today's world not many woodworkers make things by hand. The book is hard to work with, difficult to find basic stock requirements and measurements. I would not buy again.
Not very clear!.......2006-02-21
This book contains 10 ideas for games which seem to be what every child would enjoy. The problem is that most of the figures used in the book to give construction details leave a lot to be desired. Most of the photos are black and white and difficult to see any detail. The drawings are also in black and white and are also very difficault to follow.
OK for ideas, but not for projects.......2000-08-05
I was disappointed as well. I expected projects I could build, but nothing struck me as worth the time. The basic ideas are OK, marble rollers, and so on. But I would only use this stuff as a departure point for my own designs.
Making Marble-Action Games, Gadgets, Mazes & Contraptions.......2000-02-17
This book was a terrible disappointment. I wanted to give it no stars but that didn't seem to be an option. For most of these gadgets he begins the chapter by explaining that they don't actually work very well, they tend to jam and clog up requiring a certain amount of tilting and tapping to clear the device. Many of the mazes and such are non-functional - they are there to make the contraption look complicated. It's clear to me from looking at it that the dice substitute will never generate a 1, 2, or 6, and the thing is definitely not uniform like dice would be. The spirit of Rube Goldberg is represented by contraptions that do a lot but accomplish very little. The mechanisms in this book just don't do anything. I didn't find a single satisfying project in here and felt like it was a waste of twenty bucks. And what are metric conversion tables doing in here? An embarrassment if you ask me. If you like this kind of stuff get Making Wooden Mechanical Models by Alan and Gill Bridgewater. It is far superior.
Few dimensions are given........1999-11-16
I am used to making projects for which dimensions for the various pieces are provided. Not only does the author fail to provide dimensions but he also fails to even talk about some of the pieces that are part of a given project.
