Book Description
This book describes the theories and processes of repairing and adjusting the modern watch in precise and meticulous detail. De Carle takes his reader through every stage and operation of watch repairing, and with 553 illustrations, it can justifiably claim to be the best illustrated book on practical horology yet issued, and one of the best of its kind on any subject.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe not so Practical.......2007-08-23
As a watchmaker by Trade, i bought this out of curiosity. From the techinques of openning a watch case to the description of indiviual watch parts is grossly outdated. New technology in watch production rendered this book obsolete and would only be suited to someone whose advanced in their studies as a watchmaker rather than a novice.
Practical Watch Repairing Book.......2007-08-13
This product, though very good, was not what I expected. It is apparently a very early book on watch repair (updated through the years), written by a watch repairman. The book targets persons wanting to begin a watch repair business, so it included the ideal work space, all the tools necessary to begin an ultimately profitable business, all good information but more than I wanted or needed. It is sometimes difficult to read because a few sections are quite technical and include jargon, but I was also able to locate and understand the information I needed for my own home watch repairs.
Mechanical watch repair.......2007-05-25
I am amazed that this book (my edition printed in 2006) is an exact copy of a 1971 printing. Mechanical watches of today are readily described in this 35 year old text.
The 1971 dust jacket has hand drawn lettering. The 2006 dust jacket has been cleaned up by computer aided drawing. It was amazing to find out that the author passed away in 1989. He unfortunately lived long enough to see the Japanese demolish the mechanical watch industry.
This book does have a place in today's world...The mechanical Swiss Watch is making a comeback, although limited to those willing to invest in a $400 and up watch. But if you buy a good Swiss mechanical, it can be passed down and repaired by your heirs.. This book will probably still be available, when your heirloom is in need of repair...
Small steps can allow you to save .......2007-03-21
SImple things using the right tools and procedures can allow you to get the satisfaction for the simple repairs. I would suggest doing classes etc or going to a professional for the more advanced types of repairs. The book also allows you to gain an appreciation of actually what makes then tick and tock.
Practical Watch Repairing.......2007-01-10
Very useful and thorough watch repair instructions for mechanical watches. Much detail on repair procedures. Very useful for beginners. This book and Henry Fried's book,"The Watch Repairer's Manual,4th edition", are considered classics in the field. Get both if you can.
Book Description
In this book, the author has dealt with the usual faults likely to develop in each type of movement in a clock's general use, from the lordly grandfather to the humble alarm. All the tools and equipment are described and illustrated, together with the ways of using them. The craftsman's most important and valuable tools of all—his skillful fingers—are shown in use in the clearest manner. Over 400 line drawings have been specially made from parts under working conditions.

This book is thorough. This book covers the topic of wheel and pinion cutting very well. I would like to have seen a chapter on CNC.

Wheel and Pinion Cutting in Horology.......2006-08-05
One of the best books on gear cutting written so an average machinist can understand it.
Ultimate guide to gear cutting for the hobbyist, +clockmaker.......2004-12-10
Fanatastic book, and a bargain at the price. This book should be of interest to all clock makers, model makers, and home shop machinist. Anyone interested in the history of machine tools and clock making will also find this work of real interest. The first section covers the history of wheel cutting and the later part deals with all aspects of gear making in detail. Covers a wide range of gear cutting equipment, how to make cutters, and related watch and clock making operations. Absolutely the best book on the subject!!

A helpful book even if dated.......2002-01-07
Unlike how to books of today, this book is not filled with pictures. However, the written definitions are very clear. I was able to sit down with this book and read a section and then take what I just learned and apply it to my watches. If you're looking for a step by step book, this is not it. But does have a great deal to offer.
Not a "practical handbook" for today........1999-08-31
This is a reprint of a book first issued in 1930. It does have some fascination, for instance in the comparison of gas vs. oil lighting for your workspace. For my purposes as a beginner looking for basic methods for mechanical watch cleaning and repair, it was practically useless.
It gives equal time to fusee and Geneva watches and may well be of interest to an experienced person looking for a glimpse into the past, but not reccomended as a "practical handbook."

Customer Reviews:
Great Projects!.......2006-11-27
Kirigami really means paper cutting. This book has great ideas for creating unusual, year-round greeting cards! They are simple, yet the results look professional. I have always wanted to know how to cut chains for paper dolls and now I can make them to decorate a birthday card for a child. For a more sophisticated approach, I found a red rose that opens into a pop-up. I recommend this book for family members of all ages and rate it with 4 stars.
Cheesy.......2005-01-16
This book is such a huge disappointment. I had hoped it would be a good, basic primer for kirigami and making pop-up cards, with some inspired projects to aspire to, maybe even attempt. The designs are uninspired and uninteresting. The layout is busy and seemed unfocused. It might appeal to some children, though I've seen far better works aimed at children, so I wouldn't recommend this book for kids or adults.
The Kirigami page-a-day calendar is a better choice as a kirigami primer, especially if you enjoy the symmetry and delicate beauty of cut paper designs.
Book Description
If you only buy one childbirth book, this is the one...
The most complete. It covers all aspects of childbearing from conception through early infancy. It includes information on what to expect during pregnancy and birth and how you can work with your caregivers to make childbirth a happy and healthy experience.
The easiest to use. It is well organized for easy reading and quick reference. There are more than 45 charts and 150 photographs and illustrations to clarify the information -- more graphic aids than any other childbirth book.
The most up-to-date. It includes the latest information on clinical tests and procedures in pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy. It also covers concerns regarding the emotional aspects of childbearing, the partner's role, comfort measures, high-risk pregnancies, medications, vaginal birth after cesarean, breastfeeding, and understanding infant behavior.

All The Info You Need!.......2007-09-25
This book has all the information you need for pregnancy, from scientific details to everyday stuff. This is my first pregnancy, and this book has not only answered many of my questions, but has also brought up so many things that I hadn't even thought to ask. A definite must-have.
My #1 Recommended Book.......2007-08-18
By far the best pregnancy book I have read to date, and I have read most of them. I recommend this book to all my family/friends...even ones that are on their 3rd or 4th pregnancy.
Unlike other popular pregnancy books, this book is very easy to read, contains simple facts and most importantly, is very unbias. It doesn't sugar coat anything, but it doesn't scare you with all the worst-case-scenario situations.
I only wish I had picked this book up earlier in pregnancy last year. I was over 6 months pregnant when I purchased, and with my first pregnancy, this book put my mind at ease. I recommend this book if you are looking for great facts and information without feeling like the author is bias and/or pushing their beliefs and experiences through the pages.
"Preparing for childbirth" is not the same as "pregnancy".......2007-08-17
As you arrive closer and closer to you due date, you will naturally have questions about how the birthing process itself develops and how you can prepare yourself for it. Educating yourself on the birthing process will empower you and will bring you closer to having a natural vaginal uncomplicated birth. I highly recommend this book as it details coping techniques for the different stages of labor, charts and info about possible interventions, and all information you would need to achieve a successful labor. Also it has information (brief but concise) on pregnancy, postpartum, childcare. If you are looking to know more about the 9 months of pregnancy, you might consider buying another book AS WELL as this one. You must become knowledgeable and prepared for the climax of your pregnancy, which is,of course, your child's exit from your body and entry into this world. Good Luck!
Very well written.......2007-08-06
This book would be beneficial for the educator as well as the person just seeking information from conception to the newborn and everything in between. Easy to understand, explains terminology as needed. It is the complete guide.
Excellent book to get you ready.......2007-06-27
I really liked this book because it had a very non-biased approach to dealing with all the issues that come up during pregnancy and childbirth.

Customer Reviews:
Not as comprehensive as I'd like..........2006-05-07
I'm a first-time mom-to-be considering cloth diapering our baby. I find the world of cloth diapering really overwhelming (who knew there were 18 different ways to fold a piece of cloth, and then 24 different accessories that work with each different fold!?). I bought this book becuase I wanted an overview of the options, and a description of what would be necessary to do cloth diapering.
The focus in the book is very heavily on home-washing, which is great, but it tends to neglect other options like diaper services. We intend to use a diaper service, and after reading the book I'm still wondering, for example, what paraphenalia I need to purchase? What is typically supplied by a diaper service? How should I choose one service over another?
The author makes a great case for cloth-diapering, but the book does have a tendency to stray into the irrelevant - there are a number of sections on how to bond with your child while changing, how parents should enjoy every minute with their children, etc. Great information for a baby book, not really necessary for one about diapering!
The resource section is great and I really appreciate the links to a lot of different online sites where I can purchase the pieces for cloth diapering. I would recommend getting this book if you are considering cloth diapering, but I am also going to keep looking for a more comprehensive resource.
An Excellent Book by a Devoted Mother.......2006-02-07
I have very rarely read a book that is written by a mother who shows so much compassion towards children and mothering. This book was extremely helpful in both its practical and philosophical persepctives on mundane issues such as diapering, and deeper issues, such as breast feeding, loving your children and attachment parenting. Truly this is a woman of great conviction and wisdom.
Great starting point for a newbie! (3rd Edition review).......2005-09-14
I found this book to be extremely helpful as a person just entering the world of cloth diapering. I started doing some online research on the DiaperPin and MDC sites and found it to be information overload. It is all so overwhelming - I needed a basic place to start. There are TONS of online resources - but if you are like me - and get a headache when you read too long/staring at the computer screen - you prefer a book you can hold in your hand and read.
This book goes over all of the different types of diapers, diaper covers, soakers, pants, and diaper accessories. It offers a good basic breakdown for someone unaware of what cloth diapering is all about. The costs of each kind of diaper is covered, and compared to disposable diapers. The environmental and health and safety issues relating to diapering are covered. Instructions are given on how to actually diaper a newborn and toddler and how to launder diapers.
I like the gray boxes scattered throughout the book - they give a rundown of the facts just covered in that chapter - sort of like a quick reference. There is also a "make-your-own" section that I found helpful. I am going to try this before I invest any big money into WAHM or diaper company purchases.
The end of the book has a Company and Resource guide that list diaper/cover reviews and Diaper Company reviews. The author does give her opinion throughout the book - based on her experience with her six kids. This doesn't bother me as I think a previous reviewer mentioned being upset by this. All moms have their own opinions (usually very strong ones!) This author is no different.
All in all this is a good starting point for someone new to the diapering world wanting a layout of the basics - I highly recommend it. Although someone who is already "in the know" may find this book too basic and a waste of time. There are Moms out there that REALLY know their stuff when it comes to CDing - this book is not for them. But it is "for me." Now that I have more info - I can go online and research further and not feel like my head is going to explode from too much information! I can weed through the sites and focus on certain areas from the info I have gained from this book.
Not overly impressed........2005-04-27
I received a copy of "Diaper Changes" and found it to be totally biased against mothers like myself who still choose to cloth diaper the (old-fashioned) way meaning folding, pins, and rubber pants. Theresa is overly opinionated regarding her own personal preferences and too quick to put down everything else that she doesn't prefer using in the way of cloth diapering needs. I wouldn't at all recommend the book to anyone.
Great starting point for those considering cloth diapers.......2002-09-23
I purchased this book during pregnancy of my first child. I'd already decided to use cloth diapers and was looking for information to help me make more informed choices. While I still felt a bit overwhelmed after reading the book cover to cover, the book is a must read for familiarizing yourself with the broad spectrum of cloth diapering. There is helpful information on the wide variety of cloth diapers and covers available today, how to care for them, how to use and clean, even how to make your own diapers, etc.
However, I feel that you will still need to spend some time doing your own research and getting opinions from others, such as from an online message board or from the folks that run websites that sell cloth diapers (many of whom are moms with children in cloth diapers). Eveyone's needs are different -- for both the parents and the baby.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that there are even more types of diapers than mentioned in the book and some of the references are out of date.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Easy to Understand.......2007-02-25
This book gives moms-to-be the facts without being overwhelming or having a judgmental tone. I have found it to be easy to understand, and the section on newborn care contains helpful information that is missing from many pregnancy books. After all, the experience doesn't end when the baby is born- it's only the beginning! My husband appreciated the detailed illustrations showing how to hold the baby, swaddle the baby, etc.
Very helpful book........1999-11-05
I, too, was very fortunate in having Jerri as my nurse when I had my son 11 years ago. She was the reason I didn't give up on nursing my son. I told her this when I saw her in a restaurant one day--remember Jerri! I'm so glad you got to write your book. You did a fantastic job. This woman knows her stuff!
Thorough answers for concerned parents to be........1999-10-03
I purchased this book because it has so much information about Pregnancy, Birth, and beyond. It encompasses the entire process of becoming a new parent which I am most concerned about. It is a terrific medical reference guide written in a friendly, easy to understand format with descriptive diagrams. The chapters and index make for quick and easy subject locating. I know I will refer to it again and again once the baby arrives. Thank you to Jerri Colonero for writting this complete guide which every expectant mother (and father) should have.
Absolutely fantastic book! Spread the word.......1999-03-28
This is the best resource on pregnancy and post-partum that I have found. Completely accessible, easy to read, well organized, thorough and detailed... I can't give it enough praise. I was especially impressed (and thankful) for the detailed childbirth section, which provided a wealth of information that most books only touch on. This is my first baby, and I feel so much more prepared and in control (despite the all-day nausea!). Where other books prescribe unrealistic diets and regimented rules, Jerri Colonero presents sensible guidelines and helpful suggestions in a warm way: no scare tactics here! Further, the section on bringing baby home covers all sorts of material, from breastfeeding basics to bathing. This is just the resource I was looking for and I've already consulted in again and again. I plan to spread the word about this wonderful book.
Family-centered and very accessible.......1999-03-19
The book is written in an easy to understand, personable style. It is as if "Nurse Colonero" is sitting in the room with you. In many contemporary medical environments, the emphasis is on expeditious teaching interactions. The immediate post-partum period is often a time of emotional and physical exhaustion, and so a family's ability to learn new information may be limited. This book will not only give you a comprehensive outline of important concepts, it should also provide the patient and family with a fundamental framework of knowledge which will empower you to be a more savvy "medical consumer." You can think about issues and concerns and present them to your health care providers for discussion. Jerri Colonero's book should be a template for patient education and empowerment. Managed care is here to stay, and the more educated families are about their health care needs and their access to potential information and services, the better the outcomes will be for everyone: patients, families, providers, and payors.
