      3 out of 5 stars Baby Crochet.......2007-03-13

I love the pictures in this book and the directions are clear and concise. I was a bit disappointed that the blankets were not especially unique in design..just different colors. However, for one just stating out, this might exactly what you need.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!!!!.......2007-02-09

Item was prompt with delivery and came in good condition.
My fiance loves this book and says it's very easy to understand and follow.
I would recommend this to anyone getting involved in Crochet.
I would buy from this vendor again with pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars By far, the best crocheted baby blanket book out there.......2006-10-04

I came upon this book at a local yarn store, and immediately fell in love with it. It helped that the store had re-created one of the patterns from the book, an adorable 9-square teddy bear face blanket with blue trim and 3D ears. I bought all the yard I'd need to make a similar blanket (no doubt that's what the store had in mind!), and I'm just now finishing my own version (using fuzzy yarn for the faces).

I can't recommend this book highly enough. First off, the photography is gorgeous, a real treat to page through. The patterns are so beautiful, and are presented clearly and neatly. I have yet to find any mistakes in them. Some of the patterns are more complex than others, but I've found you can tell pretty quickly what the level of expertise required is, simply by looking at the complexity of the pattern presented. The last few pages of the book also include helfpul refresher tips (or how-to pictures for beginners) related to the stitches and techniques required in the patterns.

If you love to crochet, and want to have a source for really creative, lovely, and customizable blankets, then this is the best book out there that I've found. I'm really very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Some cute ones in here.......2006-07-31

Okay, I'm a sucker for cute babies and cute crochet/knit projects....so sue me.

I like that Ms Jensen has included some designs that move away from the over done but somehow obligatory pastel pink and blue.

I worry, though, how safe her added "sheep", flowers, and pom poms are.

5 out of 5 stars Great crocheting for all.......2006-02-01

This is a very nice book of crocheting "blankies" for kids. It is well done with good pictures and very understandable directions. Great variety of different types of afghans for babies. If you like this book, check out "Candy Babies" and "Candy Tots" also by Candi Jensen. She is a very creative crocheter and for someone like me who really is drawn to baby and tottlers' clothes and blankets, she is a great resource.

From a little black kitten cap with pointed ears to a peppermint pinwheel beret (complete with candy cane scarf), these 30 crocheted items for baby will inspire oohs and ahhs. They're simply too cute for words, and just right for intermediate-level crocheters. Helpful instructions teach all the necessary specialty stitches and explain how to master such techniques as crocheting 3-dimensional forms. The projects (organized by theme) feature adorable images and lots of time-tested tips. And each one is simply irresistible: a lion hooded jacket with a fuzzy yarn mane and matching mitten paws, a Heidi hat with a folk design and fake yarns braids peeking out the sides, and a dress-up royal purple cape and bejeweled crown. There's no collection like it.

      4 out of 5 stars SIMPLY ADORABLE!.......2006-12-26

The hats featured in this book are REALLY cute and clever. Unfortunately, however, some of the pattern sizing seems wonky (even though I made gauge swatches) and some of the patterns slightly unclear. Also, there are some small details not to my liking (the drawstring tie on the kitty hat), but nothing that I couldn't figure out how to change. Irregardless, I do highly recommend the book (especially if you're looking for something "different"), as does my two-year-old daughter who will spend hours just looking at the pictures! :)

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative patterns .......2005-12-06

This is perfect for little ones, especially the patterns on the cover. Although I can't make them for my granddaughter yet( she is still very small), you can bet that I will be, so many cute patterns that will be enjoyed by the babies.

5 out of 5 stars Super cute hats for babies.......2005-09-27

This book is full of hats for babies (up to 24 months) with a few accessories like slippers, mittens and a purse.
The hats are mostly "costume" hats - there's a pointy elf hat with a fuzzy chin strap that looks like a beard, there's a pink poodle hat that uses eyelash yarn to make the curly hair of the dog, a chocolate kiss using silver yarn and a sweet strawberry with a green stem.
These are not the old crocheted items your great-aunt used to make...these are cute, hip, "new" styles that are sure to get lots of compliments.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Seems pretty good.......2007-09-06

There's only one other review for this book so here's my two cents. On the plus side:

There are lots of nice photos of the projects, several of each project in fact. Some of the patterns look really attractive; there's a striped baby hoodie, a poncho, a hat, and a blanket that I like a lot in particular. I would have given this book 3 stars, I think, if that baby hoodie weren't so cute. I think the colors are mostly nice which gives the book a nice look. Only a couple of the projects made me go "eeww". And the garment patterns give different sizes along with the finished dimensions.

      On the minus side:

Finished dimensions are given, but no schematics. Only Rowan brand yarns are used, but the weights are not given (eg, worsted). You can easily look up the given yarns in order to substitute but it's irritating. And the projects don't have any indication as to difficulty. Lastly, a couple of the projects seemed silly. I'm thinking especially of the hanging storage pockets. Why would you crochet that? Wouldn't it be better sewn out of fabric?

I can't talk about the patterns because I haven't tried any projects yet. If I do, I will update my review.

Finally, the phrasing of the other review made me think that this book is filled with pillows. There are two pillow patterns out of 25 total, just to be clear.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-13

The book had only one baby design that I liked, the rest were pillows, very basic accessories and boring designs for older kids, not even toddlers the same pictures of the same projects repeated thoughout the book. Colorful and well phographed, but no very inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Patterns that don't scream "home made".......2007-03-16

Really am excited about patterns in this book. Experienced crocheter, always looking for style that are not your usual suspects. First grandbaby on the way and am going stitch happy.

5 out of 5 stars Another of my favorites!.......2005-12-19

This book is another of my favorite books for baby and toddler clothing. I have made the stuffed zebra (in sky blue and white stripes for something a little out of the ordinary) and the girl's floral sweater (in tan with peach flowers).

This is one of my favorite books for finding great baby items. I've made many for other people's children, and I am now thrilled to make these patterns up for my 4-month old daughter.

A comment to the reviewer who feared placing buttons on baby clothes ... they are everywhere. Carters, Baby Gap, Gerber, and so on ... you'll see buttons on baby clothes of all brands. It is the parents' responsibility to make sure that the buttons are secured safely and that the child cannot rip them off.

      3 out of 5 stars Buttons Beware.......2005-08-05

I'm a beginning crocheter when it comes to clothes and I don't have kids. I bought this book to create some things for my niece (baby due in January). However, every pattern has buttons, something I'm told can be dangerous for infants and toddlers. I love the patterns and think the outfits are gorgeous but be aware that some new mothers may be leary of letting their babies wear outfits with buttons on them.

      4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!.......2003-07-22

I just received this pattern book, and I love it! I have been an avid crocheter for over 25 years and have seen lots of books. This one is well worth the price.

Multiple pictures of each item helps you get a better idea of the entire project before you begin. I like that they show the project being worn by a cute kid as well as on its own. The materials list, patterns, and graphs are well written. Each pattern includes the stitches shown in symbols, a great way to see what are you going to do before you start work.

The only negative (my usual pet peeve) is that they tell you exactly what yarn they used in the project, not a general description what type/weight yarn would work. I would prefer pattern books to first list the weight and type of yarn plus what was used in the picture. I want all the information in case the yarn that was picked doesn't come in a color I'd want to use.

All in all, a great book and recommended.

      Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Nice patterns, but we're not in Britian!!.......2003-04-07

The book is beautiful, the patterns are great, but...this is a British book. And it was written with only British yarn recommendations. So be prepared to do a little work to substitute the yarns available here with the appropriate ones for each pattern. Other than that, I love it and highly recommend it.

      4 out of 5 stars Doesn't look "homemade".......2007-09-27

Ilove finding books with patterns that don't scream "homemade" that make people ask if you would like to sell it. This book contains patterns that are just like that. I wish that they had instructions for larger size in a couple of them. I can figure that out on my own. I also would suggest that yardages for yarn would be listed, it makes it easier to subsitute, esp when the yarn is not available in the states. Also you have to remember that a double crochet is a single in the states. Check the beginning instructions if you are not sure what patterns mean.
      I recommend this book

4 out of 5 stars Good book but it had me a bit lost.......2007-07-22

I would not consider myself a beginner, but this book had me so lost aht I felt like one. I was thrilled to get down to work while waiting for my next arrival. BUT, the stitches are not what i was taught. They called single stich, double and double treble, and so on. I have tried two of the projects from this book and both I have had to frog and start over a number of times. I have since put the book back onto the bookshelf and will look at it in a few more months.

The book really does have some very cute patterns. But becasue I know the American way of crochet it has me a little bit lost. This would be great for someone who is just learning as they do explain in the first few pages the basics of crochet and if you learn their way it will be easier for you to follow the patterns. I think my main problem is that it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks (not the the way they do it is new but they call diffrent stitiches diffrent names than what I learned).

Overall this is a great book. I am just hardheaded and really set in my ways.

      3 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2007-06-05

The edition of this book I have seen is from 2002, published in North America, and uses American terms. The photos are indeed adorable. the colors used are not the typical pastels and the designs are clean and modern. the color combinations are inspiring. I feel the smock pictured on the Amazon page (on the cover of the softback book) is the best design in the book. However, it is made in Patons Baby pure Wool 3-ply, which is apparently not available in the US. Finding a substitute for this yarn has proved quite difficult for me. The directions call for a 2mm (steel size 4) hook, which is quite small; I mention that because some crocheters do not like to use such small sizes. The garment size ranges are quite limited; the smock is in sizes 0-5 months and 5-10 months. Another nice design is the Icelandic cardigan (in reality a fairly simple variation on a round-yoke design)--this is for size 6 months only.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable Crochet for babies and toddlers.......2007-05-18

What I love most about this book is the contemporary styles so beautifully photographed, I have searched on line for a long time and all I could find were the "granny" style projects that young mothers would consider tacky. These projects are practical and trendy and inspire me to do do them. The book has a glossary that defines the terms that I didn't understand since the terminology is a bit different. Beautiful book!

      5 out of 5 stars A great find.......2007-05-11

I absolutely LOVE this boook. I'm relatively new to crochet, and would consider myself an advanced beginner. That said, this book is definately NOT beyond the grasp of someone who is new to crochet. She does use british crochet terms, but they're all explained in detail (including pictures of how to do each and what they look like) in the first pages of the book. I've never made anything besides baby afghans and booties, and so I tried the smocked dress that's on the front cover of the book. It came out great - I had NO problems with the pattern. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether you're a beginner or you've been crocheting for a long time. There are a lot of great, unique, and absolutley adorable patterns in this book that you won't find anywhere else. Just be sure you read through the beginning so that the british terms don't confuse you. Have fun!!

                Book Description

Illustrated with nearly four hundred magnificent photographs of fossils and living plants, this book tells the story of Australia's remarkable floral heritage, from its genesis through to its last stages of evolution, while also providing a general introduction to major patterns in the history of plant life. Over 50 million years ago when Australia broke away from the great supercontinent known as Gondwana, which comprised all the major southern landmasses, a modern aspect flora was already established and rainforests covered most of the land. The remnant rainforests of Australia are ancestors of a unique flora that evolved in isolation as the continent moved slowly northward to the position it occupies today. Here Mary White traces the evolution of plants from the earliest times when all life was confined to the water and the land was barren, and describes the emergence of the first land plants about 400 million years ago. Her portrayal of Australia's flora includes the changes that have since come with the arrival of settlers and their crops of exotic plants. The fossil record studied in this book is a tantalizing key to visualizing the world as it once was. The plants tell us of past climates, conjure up a picture of ancient landscapes, and explain configurations of land and sea on the ever-changing surface of the earth. A single source of information on fossil floras and environments of past ages, The Flowering of Gondwana enables scientists and general readers to follow Australia's plant ancestry and to appreciate the individuality that has evolved from an inheritance in common with plants from other southern lands.
