Pets Living with Cancer - A Must Read!.......2004-12-06
This is an excellent book, and if you have ever had, or currently have, a pet with cancer, you deserve a copy of this book.
It takes you by the hand, and explains in easy to understand layman terms, just what the diagnosis of cancer means to you and your pet, in terms of options, cures and hope. It phrases the questions you should ask your vet about any anticipated therapies and operations for the cancer-stricken pet.
The book is positive in outlook, giving pet owners hope, when there seems to be none. Cure types, therapies, and chemotherapy types and kinds are explained. It even discusses nutrition as it relates to saving the pet and `starving' cancer. And research shows diet can play an important role in starving cancer!
The book gives lots of detail; it answers all the questions that the pet owner, in a state of shock after the diagnosis, forgot to ask the vet. It gives helpful hints on how to organize yourself for future vet visits with the cancer-striken pet, and suggests questions you should then ask the vet.
In sum, for anyone with a pet that has cancer - this little book will become your `guide book.'
I'd buy the book `before the event' however, so you have it when you need it.
WEAK IN NUTRITIONAL INFO - BUT AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWN.......2003-01-01
I read this little book the first night I got it, and learned a great deal. I only wish I had this info before I lost my beautiful cat friend Taura to cancer almost 5 yrs ago. Even though I thought I was well informed at the time Taura was sick, I've since learned that I really was not, and a book like this could have made a real difference. Veternarians do not always have the skills or knowledge to give thorough information and this book has an abundance of real life info and leaves one with a great deal to think about.
HOWEVER, I was very disappointed in the section on nutrition, which seemed to lack a full view of nutritional options. Even though there was info given on the importance of protein, carbohydrates, etc. the main recommendation for a cancer fighting food was Hills Diet, which felt bias. Some info was given on supplements, but none on other options for foods, such as the possiblity of homemade diets, either cooked or raw, which under the guidance of a good vet could be the answer to good health, depending on the individual needs of each animal. Also, no other quality foods were listed, of which there are many, which with proper guidance may also be appropriate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OTHER NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS WITH A VET WHO KNOWS NUTRITION, AS MANY DO NOT.
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO HAVE - I will keep it near and hope I will not need it.
Indispendable Resource.......2002-11-20
A brilliantly written book which offers hope, comfort and compassionate advice for all pet owners whose animal companions face this horrible disease. Covers all aspects of cancer care from diagnosis to end stages of the disease. A must for the pet owner whose beloved animal companion has been stricken with cancer. Thank you, Dr. Downing for this gem of a book.
Great Resource for Pet Owners Who Need Information.......2002-08-09
After my dog was diagnosed with cancer, I searched the internet for answers, and found this book on Amazon. It is a little book, worth it's weight in gold. It is written by a knowledgeable vet who translates clinical information into a factual, yet compassionate conversation with the reader. By using the website links in the back of the book, I was able to find a world class animal hospital in my area that correctly diagnosed the rare form of cancer my dog has. Seven months later, we are on the road to remission. I still refer to Dr. Downing's book, and am more than thanful to have found it.
Cancer is NOT a killer...........2000-08-12
This book was given to me by my vet after my dog (Nikki) was diagnosed with lymphoma. I read this book in one sitting!! This book was a great resource for me in a time of great sadness. I was able to take the many questions that didn't come to me at the vet's office and get them answered. I highly recommend this book to others who may be going through this experience.

Book Description
In One Small Garden, Barbara Nichol brings together stories, memories, and botany to create a book that is as unique and lush as a summer garden. Here, plants from all over the world live and eventually die. Ants, raccoons, and a stray cat cross paths with a lost cockatoo who originated thousands of miles away. Stories and memories of people share space in the garden too.
This is the perfect book for those who understand the enchantment and the wild-at-heart nature of the primmest garden. This is a book to treasure for the whole family.
From the Hardcover edition.

A Joy for all! Especially if you love Toronto!.......2004-11-24
I don't remember exactly how i came to find the publisher's website or this book...but I hunted it down and found it a quiet, peaceful and joyful book about life in the garden and respect for nature, and taking the time to appreciate and respect it, a lesson for human-kind as well. I was so intrigued and inspired that on a visit to Toronto I hunted down a walking guide who took me to the area of Toronto mentioned in the book (Cabbagetown). I, and my canine daughter, had a wonderful time, and I owe it all to this author and her book. We're looking forward to returning again. P.S. I am a social worker and when admiring someone's beautiful back yard, we began talking about the book, and she was anxious to track it down as well!
A lovely picturebook.......2002-01-04
Good reading skills are recommended for this lush title which blends botany and memories of plants and people. A variety of gardens are profiled, adventures in them are detailed, and young gardeners receive inspirational insights on gardens and beauty. A lovely picturebook.

Customer Reviews:
A really Great quilting book.......2007-02-11
A really helpful quide to paper piecing in quilting!..A thin book but full of both helpful and interesting paper piecing quilting ideas.
Good paper piecing instruction.......2006-08-12
I purchased this at a local bookstore especially for the instructions for English paper piecing which are very well laid out. I was also impressed with some of the very pretty quilt designs she came up with using such a basic hexagonal pattern shape. As a newbie to quilting, I look forward to trying out several of these for first projects.
VERY DISAPPOINTED.......2006-08-07
I was through reading this book in two minutes. A waste of money. The only good section was the illustration on how to do English paper piecing. The remainder of the book was boring and geared toward making tiny, trite little pictures. It missed the wonderful scope of haxagonal English paper-piecing. I was looking for just such a book, and was sorely disappointed. I really wish I could get my money back.
Quilts from Grandmother's Garden: A Fresh Look at English Paper Piecing.......2006-07-07
This book has some delightful English paper piceing quilt patterns made from tiny hexagons. I saw one of these little quilts made up and was fasinated. I am currently making the one the cover. The book is well written and the directions are easily understood.
Grandmother's Garden.......2006-06-26
The book was in excellent condition. It was a lot better than I expected. The shipping was a lot faster than I anticipated. I am very pleased with my experience and will continue order from Amazon's site.

Never enough Time.......2005-08-10
This quilt book is so much fun and so interesting to read, you can pick it up and just enjoy it without sewing a stitch.
Her directions and pictures are very good. It is like potatoe chips can't do just one block to try it, you keep wanting to do more.
They make it easy.......2001-04-08
I was delighted to find this book. for years I have admired quilts made with 3-D flowers, but feared that they were too difficult of a challenge to take on. Burns and Knoechel have provided me with an easy-to-follow guide to constructing these flowers--and, yes, I have been able to actually make several of them (as samples) in a short time.
Besides the pattern for the main quilt, the book provides detailed instructions for two other projects and photos of others that provide inspiration to use the included patterns as a springboard for original applications of their designs. I found all of the instructions to be very thorough...and very easy to follow. The authors have kindly provided color photographs to "show" as well as "tell" through the applique process.
I would recommend this book to any quilter, from beginner to advanced, for its combination of technical instruction, quilt history and imagination stimulation.

Garden Party Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilts and More.......2005-04-06
I love this book from Dorothy Kinsley Wray. The whole thing is hexagon and hexagon with diamond quilts. They work great with my Quilt Patis (tm), temporary plastic foundations. I am told by First Star Publishing that it is NOT out of print. However when a newer book on appliqued flowers with Garden Party as the title came out, many quilt shops dropped this one. I was shocked to see the used price because the publisher's suggested retail price is between $19.95 and $21.95 the last time I checked. I think that is an appropriate value.

Remembering Grandmother's Cottage
Sarah Sporrer
Manufacturer: Indygo Junction, Inc
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000TOCC12 |
Product Description
There seems to be a mood of nostalgia sweeping through us these days...perhaps it is the coming of a new century, perhaps it is something else...nonetheless, we seem to love recalling our memories of days gone past, our memories of our grandmothers, our memories of the events that have molded us.
The projects in this book are formed from those memories...the mismatched collection of pretty plates your grandmother had hanging on the wall in the hallway, the table by the bed full of her precious mementos, that big blue tea pot she always kept on the shelf in her pantry, the quaint oil painting of pears on the dining room wall...remember?
Add that special touch of nostalgia to your home...hang "The Blue and White China Collection" as a backdrop to your own, brighten your garden room with "A Yard of Pansies," throwback to the '40s with the "Rooster" apron hanging by your back door and the "Cherries" hand towel by your kitchen sink, or simply wear tea cups on your shirt and allow yourself the time to "Stay for Tea" with a friend or loved one.
For one of those special friend birthday gifts, make the "Blue Glass Fruit Bowl" pillow or "The Parlor Painting" quilt for her Christmas present...the bride-to-be would love the "Cabbage Rose" pillow or "The Bluebird Sampler"...the little girl in your life (and the big one, too) will fall in love with "The Old Bear on the Chair" pillow...and, think how very, very special someone will feel when you present them "Her Bedside Table" with photos selected just for them.
Memories are timeless...they will never go out of fashion...they will always be yours. So, go ahead and reminisce as you stitch!

Book Description
Although recent research has discredited the idea that mothers and their infants must be physically close for up to a year after birth for "bonding" to take place, many pediatricians, nurses, and others still blame mothers` inability to "bond" for all manner of social and physical problems of their offspring. In this absorbing book, Diane E. Eyer traces the history of the bonding myth, explaining its persistent popularity and showing how it reflects a disturbing tendency in our society to accept "scientific" research without question-and without awareness that it can be distorted by professional agendas and public demands.
Customer Reviews:
Bonding - No Fiction.......2000-05-10
Eyer builds a very strong case against scientific studies that use the word "bonding" regarding a critical period immediately following the birth of a child when a new mother will either accept or reject her infant, thereby affecting the child's entire life. It gives any woman who's been separated involuntarily from her infant hope that she may still form an attachment with her baby. It seems that the author is trying to help alleviate mothers of guilt when they choose or need to be apart from their infants.
This book, however, barely addresses breastfeeding and its integral link (or bond, if you will) between mother and child. Breastfeeding builds an overwhelmingly intense relationship with an infant from a few minutes after birth that continues into later life. In the case of exclusive breastfeeding, there is no question when it comes to the word "bonding." For a breastfeeding mother, no science will ever convince her that bonding is a fiction, nor will science ever convince her that being apart from her infant is okay to do.
Nature gave us the tools and the instincts to bear, hold, and feed our infants immediately following birth to form an unbreakable attachment. Eyer makes a good attept at ripping apart scientific efforts to prove that this natural process and behavior in a woman is an okay part of being human.
I highly recommend reading this book, though remaining critical of it regarding your own interests.

DR. EYER DID A WONDERFUL JOB. SHE PUT THE INFORMATION IN THE HUMAN LANGUAGE AND THE READING FLOWED WITH EASE. ONCE I STARTED TO READ IT, I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF "WHAT DO MOST EXPERTS SAY ABOUT BONDING"? NO IT'S NOT TRUE. DR. EYER IS ON THE BALL AND I HOPE SHE CONTINUES TO DO RESEARCH IN THIS FIELD.
