Opening My Wings to Fly - What Animals Have Taught Me
Tera Thomas, 2001

"I have opened my heart and let this story flow onto the paper." - Tera Thomas

I know you have witnessed people that babies and animals just seem to be drawn to. Tera Thomas is one of those people. I like Tera Thomas because she represents so many of us who just knew that if we just asked with intention for our guide to be made physically manifest for us to see and hear, that - BANG -- the light would appear, the metaphysical body would be made manifest, and pearls of wisdom would flow straight into our waiting brains! She represents those of us who were getting up, going to work, and coming home to a confusing sense of emptiness at the end of each day. Opening My Wings to Fly is a series of short essays about the hard work and the subtle intricacies of Tera Thomas' journey toward communion and communication with physical and non-physical animal guides. Thomas offers us intimate glimpses of the learning curve she experienced as she discovered that it is not our brains but our hearts that are at one with all that is. Her story is a success story. She is living her dream as it unfolds before her in a small town in North Carolina far away from her roots in New York City.

Lucy Means Light is an essay regarding the transition of Thomas' beloved cat, Lucy. Thomas tells us how she had been so busy running around "doing" that she had failed to notice Lucy's "being." As Lucy finally commits the cat faux pas of urinating on herself, Thomas stops in her tracks and realizes that her beloved is frail and fragile. A trip to the veterinarian confirms that Lucy is terminally ill with leukemia. Lucy conveys upon Thomas the gift of communion for another seven weeks. She teaches Tera how to finally drop her guard and feel. She reminds her of the energy dynamic that nothing ever dies but rather simply transmutes. As Lucy teaches Thomas of the sacredness of transition, she also teaches her that death creates a vortex into which we can pour all that we desire to permanently release from our lives. As Thomas thinks about Lucy after her death, she looks up Lucy's name in a name book and discovers what she already knows in her heart - Lucy means bringer of light.

Lucy's transition story is only one of the essays in this gloriously well-written book that brought my own feelings welling up within me. Some of the stories brought me to the brink of tears and others had me laughing until I cried! When Thomas calls to the snakes to help her learn about them and guide her they begin showing up everywhere! Their sheds, their coils, their non-nonchalant observation greets Thomas' every move as she glories in her first North Carolina summer. I believe this may fall into the category of Be Careful What You Pray For! Opening My Wings to Fly is a must have for anyone interested in animal communication.

Tera's book captures both her journey and the message of interspecies communication in an easy to read, moving story. I didn't want to finish the book because I wanted there to be more to read, more to learn. My heart and mind felt such an expanse. Thanks Tera!

5 out of 5 stars Opening My Wings To Fly: What Animals Have Taught Me.......2002-01-19

This wonderful book will change the way you look at life! In it, Tera Thomas takes us on a personal journey where we can learn for ourselves -- what animals have taught her.
Written with alot of openness, heart and humor, it is the story of her development as an animal communicator. It is filled with delightful stories of animals she has known, unforgettable characters who impart tremendous wisdom about the meaning of life and death, and the importance of acceptance. And, because of what these special beings (animals and Tera) share with the reader, I finished the book with a much greater acceptance of life -- and self -- than when I had first begun.
It is a very spiritual book, with much to be gleaned from within its pages.
You can't help but feel as if you have, if not flown, then certainly stretched your wings a bit. To be savored again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Opening My WIngs to FlY: What Animals Have Taught Me".......2001-12-22

"Opening My Wings to Fly" is a magnificent book. Tera Thomas and her precious animal friends have created stories that are beautifully written, inspiring and moving. I learned so much from reading this book - not only about the wisdom and love of animals but also about how to live in a grateful and generous way. All the while, I was captivated by the stories - stories which moved me to tears, made me laugh out loud, and motivated me to open my own wings to fly. I am very grateful to Ms. Thomas for this gift of a book. It is a treasure.

1 out of 5 stars So bad I threw it out rather than return it for a refund.......2002-12-31

I am an animal lover. When we lost one pup earlier this year I was devastated. To try to make me feel better we went to the pound and rescued two more strays. Our pack now stands at 6 -- recently I've been thinking about taking the most suitable one to nursing homes for pet therapy. Given all that, my mother gave me this book for Christmas(among others about dogs/animal rescue/pet therapy). This is such sheer [fluff], I'm amazed it was ever published. It was so bad I threw it out rather than return it for a refund or give it to the library. This isn't even comically bad, it's just spiritual drivel for the mindless mass.

The only thing I can think of is PETA published it and insists it's new-joins read the thing before confirming membership. Somewhere in there it talks about every animal being connected; they all feel each other's pain and know when someone is cruel to them -- including the ... bad people who ruthlessly tear the flesh from another creature's bones "...because they don't hear the torturous screams and see the pain and suffering of stock animals." (semi-quote from memory)

And pet astrology?...It's bad enough that people believe this junk for themselves but to put that on dogs and cats? How stupid. "A Taurus dog is playful as a pup but calms as he gets older." Hmmm...that's odd, most dogs never mature. I guess all mine have been Taurus.

Do not buy this book unless the reader has an IQ under 60. I'm insulted that it was even in my house.

This is such a fun book and fascinating. I enjoyed it so much I purchased 2 more copies to give away to fellow animal lovers.

This book is fantastic....I definately couldn't put it down and read it in the one sitting. I related to absolutely everything that Billy Roberts expressed in The Healing Paw and particulary found the section "Animals after Death" comforting, as I have recently lost one of my beloved chihuahuas. I recommend it to anyone who loves their four legged friends and companions. This book is a WINNER in my eyes. ENJOY!

Mr Peterson did an outstanding job by writing a book that offers the reader a very good overview as to how things work, and more importantly, how to fix things around the home when they go bad.

No book is perfect, however, and the one flaw with this one is the fact that the apparent lack of illustrations may scare away those already intimidated by the workings of the hardware around their homes. But fear not because the author has gone into excellent written details regarding the fixing of all those troublesome gadgets. Before long, you will realize that the author has purposefully left out the illustrations to allow the reader to think critically and solve the problem in the most effective manner, unique to the situation at hand.

When it comes down to the nitty-gritty of the fixings around the house, your best friend will be your troubleshooting skills. That is, the five logical steps of troubleshooting *any* hardware such as a faulty dryer to a stubborn computer goes as follows:

        1.Source of Power
        2.Power Controls
        3.Power Unit
        4.Power Train
        5.Use of Power

This book is a big disappointment. Pages and pages and pages of text. Precious few photos or illustraions. No "Step 1 illustration, Step 2 illustration, Step 3 illustration..." I ordered three of this book for my sons-in-laws. I sent them all back and got the Reader's Digest "Fix it Yourself" instead. More expensive but A) updated recently, and b) profusly illustrated. Very simple to follow. Don't waste your time or money on this wordy loser.

If you're the type who likes to keep old things (including houses) until they faqll apart, this book is great. It shows with diagrams how to fix everything from old walls to old toasters. It's been a bible in our family and I gave it to my sons when they moved out.

professional. However, the biggest pitfall of this book is it's dated. At best, I think the book is useful for when you're (a) desperate or (b) about to throw a broken thing away. For example, if your toaster oven breaks, odds are this will provide enough general information to convince you it's OK to take it apart and fish around, then call the manufacturer (e.g., Black & Decker is great about this) and order replacement parts.

On the other hand, as many appliances are solid-state (e.g., no tubes) AND individual parts are difficult to procure if the manufacturer doesn't support this. [In 1977, when the book was published, you could go to your local Radio Shack and buy a 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistor. It's increasingly difficult to find such things as the business models have changed to the more lucrative cell phones.)

This is a useful book if you want a general idea of how common things work and aren't afraid to use a screwdriver. It's not going to be as helpful as it was 20 years ago, however.

                      Book Description

William Hooker was the finest English painter of fruit and Pomona Londinensis is his masterwork. This suite of 49 hand-colored aquatint engravings includes the choicest fruits from the markets, private gardens, and nurseries of Regency London. As draftsman to the Horticultural Society, Hooker devoted some attention to flowers, but fruit on the bough was his specialty. Seldom has the weight of suspended fruit, the spring of cherry stems, or the background of foliage been so unerringly conveyed. Hooker even compounded a special pigment for the leaves, still sold to artists as "Hooker's Green." This Octavo Edition, reproduced from a rare large paper copy, features beautiful book images, notes on the fruit varieties depicted, an essay on fruit illustration, and a searchable transcription. Commentary by Ian Jackson.

                      Book Description

For the first time in ten years, a fully-revised edition of the classic book on how and why we hurry our children into adulthood. With the first two editions of this landmark work, Dr. David Elkind eloquently called our attention to the dangers of exposing our children to overwhelming pressures, pressures that can lead to a wide range of childhood and teenage crises. Internationally recognized as the voice of reason and compassion, Dr. Elkind showed that in blurring the boundaries of what is age appropriate, by expecting-or imposing-too much too soon, we force our kids to grow up far too fast. In the two decades since this groundbreaking book first appeared, we have compounded the problem, inadvertently stepping up the assault on childhood in the media, in schools, and at home. Taking a detailed, up-to-the-minute look at the world of today's children and teens in terms of the Internet, classroom culture, school violence, movies, television, and a growing societal incivility, Dr. Elkind shows a whole new generation of parents where hurrying occurs and why and what we can do about it.

4 out of 5 stars Stressing the point about Stress.......2006-05-02

I read this book a few months back and I'm still not decided on whether I 'loved' this book or not. I did like the book. It provided a lot of information I wasn't aware of, but I'm not sure I really liked the set-up of the book or some of the content. The main focus of this book is basically what hidden aspects of growing up stress a child out, and how that stress affects a childs development. He touches on some of the basic aspects like divorce, and death, but most of the book focus's on things that force a child to grow up too quickly. The main conclusion of every single argument in the book is anything that forces a child to grow up too quickly or puts pressure on a child beyond their natural capabilites is stressful for a child.

The first half of the book is kind of a summary of the second half of the book, which almost makes the first half pointless. The whole time I was reading it I was getting a lot of interesting information/opinions with very little proof of the points he was making. But the authors points and the information he was providing was interesting. The best chapter of the first half of the book is the chapter on Lapware (computerized learning devices). He provided great arguments, and very valid proof to back up his claims. His information would be great to base future lapware studies on. I don't want to blow this chapter for you, but his basic point is that lapware doesn't teach a child anything that he/she doesn't already know.

The second half of this book is extremely well organized, and perfect for parents, or anyone with basic knowledge of child-development. I study child development and I don't know that I've read a better book or text-book that puts Piagets development periods or Erikksons theories into better context than this book does. The way he was able to use those theories in connection with his own research, and other research was excellent. It almost makes me wish this book had a broader range of topic. I could apply the information in this book to pretty much every child I know. If you have a child that shows any self-confidence problems this book will be very helpful to you. There's nothing mentioned in the title or the description about self-confidence, but after reading the book it's easy to see how the demands put on your child affect their confidence.

There is a lot of basic information on various topics from the basic biological reactions of stress, to how schools operate. He makes very compelling arguments against the idea of "early is better" in education. He also provides good evidence in favor of keeping the arts in schools by showing that activities like gym, music, and art help children relieve stress which helps them focus more on academics (in addition to their artistic values).

At times I found some of the information in the book repetitive. He touches on certain subjects like divorce, drugs, and education numerous times. It's all good information, but I would have liked to have read more on media effects and social aspects with other peers than was offered.

Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it provides a good balance between statistical data based research without being so dense it's not readable by an average parent. The writing style is very basic, and his research is based on stats just as much as his own experiences as a therapist. So he backs up any technical data with a personal example to explain it and back it up. It's somewhat of a perfect book for parents looking to understand more about their children, and people looking for an easy book to read with solid research.

                      5 out of 5 stars Keen Insite.......2005-09-07

Elkind shows a keen insite into the brain of youth. A must read for parents concerned about the progress of their child.

5 out of 5 stars The Hurried Child by Elkind.......2004-02-05

The author cautions against rushing life for young people
and placing too many artificial pressures on them. These
pressures come in the form of standardized tests, overscheduling
and excessive concentration on child competence issues instead
of allowing young people to mature. Children are in essence
miniature adults. In addition, the author cautions against
assembly-line learning. Type A competitive children grow into
adults with more cholesterol in the blood than normal.
On international comparison tests, American students tend to
achieve lower scores despite all the pressure to do well.
Only 1/5 of 17 year olds can write a persuasive essay.
Clearly, the author has some important points to make.
The readers should heed this advice and apply it accordingly.
There is a need for balance in life. In this respect, the author
has some important points to teach college administrators and
parents. A wide constituency of educators needs to read this
book dispassionately and apply it for the benefit of students.

4 out of 5 stars Good book; a little too easy on us parents!.......2003-04-09

In The Hurried Child, Dr. Elkind does a competent job of describing a seriously problematic trend- the increasing inability and even unwillingness to appropriately "cushion" children from the modern world. The message is simple and eloquent: millions of children are simply not experiencing a proper childhood for a multitude of reasons. For some, it may be overcompetitive sports; for others, early sexuality or economic exploitation (children wielding more money and being strongly pursued as a consumer group). But regardless of form, hurrying leaves children trying to deal with adult concerns. While such kids may seem sophisticated, the deeper reality is that they are still children. This false maturation interferes with real maturation, and leads to problems in adolescence and adulthood.

Dr. Elkind gives this book more popular appeal by making his case gently- there are no "Dr. Laura" type challenges here. But if the reader will think through the implications of this book, it is clear that children are being "hurried" because parents aren't making the kinds of choices necessary for a fulfilling and protective family life. Instead, they pursue personal, material and status-oriented goods, very often to the detriment of the family. This is not because they don't care for their kids, but because our culture is so steeped in radical individualism and materialism that the very idea of what a family is supposed to be is lost. It is no surprise that the children suffer as a result, in terms of both emotional and character development.

I would propose a more profound solution than the "moderation" one to be found in this book. The cult of the individual needs to be overthrown. Parents should never make family-altering choices based solely on personal desires; the good of the children and the family unit as a whole should strongly influence what each member does. In addition, the excessive emphasis on "achieving independence" in childhood should be balanced with a recognition that all children need to be nurtured according to their stage of development. Children are not ready to be "individuals" in the adult sense of the term, which is why they are so easily influenced by peers, advertisers and celebrities. A strong, loving and non-hurrying family is a far more healthy source of influence than such factors. The more parents recognize and act upon these realities, the less kids will be "hurried", and the more they will be "trained up in the way they should go."

2 out of 5 stars How many more pages??.......2002-08-22

While Dr. David Elkind is a respected name in the Child Psychology arena, I found that anything of value or knowledge that he presented in The Hurried Child is merely common sense. It scares me to think that there are actually people out in this world, reproducing, who need to read this book.
Dr. Elkind expressed some valid points on the general "rush of society" - our tendency to saddle our children with competition in the adult world, but nothing that needed 221 pages of interpretation. Dr. Elkind takes an extremist position on his point of view throughout the book. Despite the books' attempts at valuable lessons, they are dissected into such meaningless pieces that any cohesive lesson is lost. The reality is we are living in a rapidly changing society, and individuals need to do their best to strive at an individual pace to attain what they perceive as success.
