Chimpanzees, the human species' closest living relatives, spend their lives in serial relationships: they feed, sleep, mate, and socialize in groups whose members constantly change. Given this complex and fluid social environment, how do chimps coordinate their movements to travel as a group to, say, another feeding spot?
The question of how animals organize their group movements has long puzzled observers; even today, the mechanics of how monarch butterflies and arctic terns move from place to place are matters of considerable conjecture. In On the Move, 30 leading scholars examine that question and its implications for the study of animal communication, cognition, and memory. Some argue that carnivores and nonhuman primates lack mental representations and "game plans" for movement, relying instead on "rules of thumb" to gather information about the ground before them. Other scholars maintain that phenomena like the echolocation of dolphins and whales and the long-distance, movement-coordinating signals of elephants suggest a complex knowledge of local environments.
What is certain, the contributors seem to agree, is that "group movement is as much a social behavior as it is an ecological response to the distribution and availability of resources and risks," and therefore worthy of continued study. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Getting from here to there may be simple for one individual. But as any parent, scout leader, or CEO knows, herding a whole troop in one direction is a lot more complicated. Who leads the group? Who decides where the group will travel, and using what information? How do they accomplish these tasks?
On the Move addresses these questions, examining the social, cognitive, and ecological processes that underlie patterns and strategies of group travel. Chapters discuss how factors such as group size, resource distribution and availability, the costs of travel, predation, social cohesion, and cognitive skills affect how individuals as well as social groups exploit their environment. Most chapters focus on field studies of a wide range of human and nonhuman primate groups, from squirrel monkeys to Turkana pastoralists, but chapters covering group travel in hyenas, birds, dolphins, and bees provide a broad taxonomic perspective and offer new insights into comparative questions, such as whether primates are unique in their ability to coordinate group-level activities.

Monkeys on the Move (as well as other species).......2002-04-09
This book gives the ranging patterns of various species of primates, from ring-tailed lemurs, to mountain gorillas to sulawasi black crested macaques. Most of the chapters are based on the reseachers own work, but some chapters are only reviews of others' work. Very good resource for those interested in ranging as a general topic, not quite as good for specific primate info, although the chapter on the lemurs gives a great summary chart, and so do a couple of other chapters. We used this text for a class at State University of New York, Stonybrook campus and it served our class well. Good springboard for research papers, although the chapter sequence seems to be haphazard. All in all, a very good, solid text on primate ranging, recommended for anyone with a serious interest in primatology. The methods are given for each research undertaking (note the various forms used), and while some may leave you scratching your head (a little to much info on tree diameter), if nothing else this will surely make you appreciate all the work that goes into animal tracking (there are some chapters on other species, including one on human nomadic travelers).

Bargello Quilts.......2007-09-11
These are just beautiful. Not very hard. These are fun to look at and they are amazing patterns
Bargello Quilts.......2007-06-05
I am excited to try one of these quilts. This book is an excellent addition to a quilter's library and the technique is so very different.
DO-ABLE Bargello Quilts.......2007-02-06
Marge Edie takes the mystery out of Bargello Quilts. I have admired Bargello Quilts for years, but have steered clear beacause of the complexity of the look of them. When a friend stated an interest, I pursued the art. I started out by going through my local library...then when I found Marge Edie's book, I KNEW it was the one for me! I ordered my own copy immediately!
I have my strips all cut for the set of Bargello placemats and am anxious to get them together....then on to bigger!!! Directions are clear and precise...she walks you through every step...from choosing fabrics to the binding...with directions and pictures. GREAT BOOK!
best bargello.......2004-08-20
If you're looking to get into bargello quilting, this book by far has the best ideas of any other bargello book I've seen. For the mathmatically inclined, there are much more complex ideas and designs in this book to inspire your creation. For those looking for a quick quilt, bargello strip quilting is the fastest way to make a quilt that looks more complex than it really is!
Enjoyable.......2003-04-29
I found the quilts very inspiring but the directions difficult to follow. Once I finally figured out the strips and the circle involved, it was fairly easy. I'm a novice quilter and really need to rely on the design wall and explicit instructoins. I'm excited about the final product. It is fun to quilt as you sew the project together -- then you can add additional stitching to enhance the design. Worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
Quilts are like books, keep 'em outta sight till you're done.......2005-04-11
10 projects with step-by-step instructions (which are still a tad complex) and numerous photo's of quilts in this Bargello technique.
Comprehensive guides from equipment and supplies (and aren't we all sick of reading through these, still sometimes it's a first timer who is reading the book, so make allowances people), colour palette, colour effects, and construction, as well as suggested reading(there are some good suggestions) this book is helpful, as well as an entrancing flick-thru!
One quilt I covet, and many more to be eyed with interest!
I have three completed quilt tops, and zero signed off on quilts, and I contemplate another!
Filled with bedazzling & enticing quilts, it's a worthwhile addition to your library or even as a coffee table book to entertain your guests as you muck about borrowing cups of milk from your neighbours, or the various other things I always am unprepared with when friends visit!
Interesting in terms of design, you may not want to make the quilts directly from this book, and they certainly stray from the traditional repetition of pattern, more closely resembelling a photo montage.
The colour combinations are sensational, and I can envisage great things, when combined with other quilting ideas, for instance the Japanese styles or more rounded patchwork quilts.
Many are to die for and one particular quilt "Aurora" combining midnight blue hues with burnt umber & pastels is spectacular & I am dying to make my own variation of this exquisite quilt.
Now a word of warning:
Don't sign over your quilts to anyone, do not make on commission, do not promise to make a quilt for a friend (or if you do, never tell them you have started, just leave it that nebulous, oh yes sure I will), and NEVER EVER show them a quilt you have fallen in love with hoping that they will not like it and you can keep it after all.
As I mentioned, I have 3 unfinished quilt tops, and sometimes I think I am delaying finishing two of them just so I don't have to give them to the promised future owners!
Wonderful.......2002-11-16
I never thought it would be this easy. It took just a little over two days, yes days to complete this lovely quilt. I did Monet and it was so unbelievably easy.
I just love bargello now!
The Complex Made Easy!.......2002-05-28
Wow! This book is a genuine treasure. Like the other reviewers, I have a lot of sewing experience but have not done much quilting. I made 'Cascade' and could not believe how easy it was -- and how much fun, too. This book is well laid out which makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and easy to follow the amazingly simple steps.
Colorwash Bargello.......2001-08-31
When I first received the book, I thought, there is absolutely "no way" I can do this. I had never done any strip peacing work before. But, this book took me step by step through the strip peacing, Bargello process. Beth's thoughts and words about color and value are more thorough than anything I learned in college art classes. One could use the book for color theory alone. Beth's approach to Bargello is almost a "trust me" theory. I honestly did have my doubts but I followed her explicit instructions faithfully and my "Star Kindler" top is nearly complete. And it is fabulous beyond anything I could have hoped for or imagined.
Outstanding book packed with ideas!.......2001-07-09
Colorwash Bargello Quilts is one of the best quilting books I've read. As a relatively new quilter with 40+ years of sewing experience, I constantly battle the color rules for garment sewing when I'm working on a quilt. Beth Williams' book has one of the easiest discussions of choosing colors for quilts that I've read. I have constructed one of the projects and look forward to doing many more. Beth's book makes the details of quiltmaking and quilting very understandable.

Customer Reviews:
Great New Quilt Design Technique.......1998-09-04
Marge Edie has done an outstanding job of teaching this technique so it can be understood by the beginner as well as the advanced quilter. Its a refreshing new idea. She gives encouragement to the beginner by revealing things like "my points don't always match". The gallery is an inspiration. You'll be surprised at how different the slant bargello looks from "regular bargello". The designs look complicated, but if you can rotary cut and sew a 1/4 inch seam with accuracy, you'll be amazed at the beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations you can turn out -- and best of all, when you are finished sewing, you are also finished quilting -- it's quilt as you go!

It gets the creative juices flowing! I've yet to find this particular volume, but the cover shows a beautiful story to draw me completely in.

Customer Reviews:
Help for a difficult time.......2002-11-04
This book would have been helpful for me in working through two bouts with cancer. In the privacy of my own home I was able to read the various scenarios and think about ways to continue dealing with my children and the dreaded disease. I recommend this book to any family having to cope with cancer and its devastating affect on all concerned.
A must read for anyone who knows someone.......2002-10-24
Though blessed with not having any of my immediate family stricken with such a horrible disease, I frequently find myself hearing of a friend or someone diagnosed with some form of cancer (non of us seem immune to such tragedy). Aside from initial sorrow of the news, I often find myself asking; does the person have children and how are they accepting the news? No one has ever supplied a warm and fuzzy answer to this question. Lost for words, I find myself referring this timely book over and over again. The author's personal experience and efforts to obtain multiple essays from others who have faced such hurdles, will provid enough encouragement to help those most important in our lives. Our children!
If you are not motivated to read this yourself, send it to someone or anyone in need.
