Jumping on the Bandwagon.......2007-07-16
I'm going to jump right on the 5 star rating bandwagon for this book. I figure there is something for everyone between these pages...using dolls house elements as embellishments, cigar boxes, altered books, fabric, tins and of course lots of paper. I figured I'd seen just about every permentation of scrapbbok, but the paper doll book was a new one for me.
And I just loved the suggestion of using gin as a tranfer agent onto polymer clay. Can't confirm that it actually works, but I intend to give it a try. At least if the technique doesn't work, there should be some compensation left in the bottle!

Wonderful Scrapbooks.......2007-03-08
Amazingly wonderful images and ideas abound in this superbly documented and organized book. Once again Katherine Aimone has done it. As in her other books, she has chosen the "best of the best" projects and presented her audience with readable and clear directions. No other scrapbooking book can outdo this one in creativity and imagery. A clear winner!

Get Better Quality Elsewhere.......2005-04-25
I had ordered this for a birthday party and due to my own error it did not arrive in time. I checked online and found this product at my local bookstore, so I decided to purchase the item there and return the one I had bought on this site. When I arrived at the bookstore, I was very disappointed in the quality of the books. There were two copies of this book at the store, and both had dirt on the front cover that I could not remove and grooves in the front and back of the book. Also, the book is spiral bound and the spirals were all uneven and bent. Granted, this was at a (very reputable) book store and not ordered from online, but as I was purchasing this book for a nine year-old girl, I did not think that it was very practical to purchase an item that can turn dingy so quickly. As for the book itself, I was not very impressed with the items it came with. The book was essentially a large notebook with blank white pages inside. There was a small leaflet-like instructional manual and in the back was a small pouch with a some stickers and perhaps a few other items. The pouch did not look very big and the sticker sheet on the front included a variety of shoes, which was not particularly what I would choose to put on my scrapbook pages. I ended up going to Jo-Ann fabrics and purchasing a nice kit for about the same price (albeit it was on sale). There is also a scrapbook kit from Toys R Us called "Totally Me" that I have seen on this site for around $15. While I haven't actually seen the contents, it seems like a much better value and more durable than this book. All in all, if you are really searching for a book to preserve your memories forever, I feel that your best bet would be to purchase a kit with albums that have page protectors and embellishments that aren't as TERRIBLY age specific. While I have heard many good things about the American Girl Library, I wouldn't count this book among it's higher quality merchandise.

This book is the coolest way to remember your life. American Girl supplies you with ideas and helpful reminders to make this book something to look back on. It is fun to do with a friend or if you have some ideas to add. It allows you to be free and express the way you really feel about YOU!! Working with crayons, markers, stickers, pictures, and many more is just the beginning. After you complete a page, look back at the effort and heart you put into it. I reccommend this book to any girl who wants to remember their life.

I found a few ideas to try that I never would have tried prior. Not everything is for everyone, but most should be able to pick out one or two projects that pay in themselves for the cost of the book. I would have, however, appreciated more step - wise pictures and having the instructions with the item, instead of in the back of the book.

I have to admit, I actually borrowed this book from the library first to see if it was worth purchasing and it definitely is!! Great ideas on fairly easy projects that I can't wait to try. I'm no Martha Stewart, but I think I could actually DO most of the projects in this book. Very inspirational and the projects actually look NICE, not like grade school crafts. I recommend it!
Flea Market Finds: Instant Ideas & Weekend Wonders.......2003-01-22
On the positive side, the photographs are excellent. That's the only good news. This book does nothing but tell you how to make ... out of ... I'd return it if I could. The directions are sparse and usually say, use according to manufacturer's directions. Oh yea, I paid for that little tidbit. You have to be a moron not to have come up with anything in this publication.

This is a hardbound version of the paperback books others are selling here. I enjoyed having this book so much. It is expecially good for people who can take anything and make something special out of it to decorate their home. It is hardbound and contains drawings and a paper bookcover that is in pristine condition.

I find this book to be awful. There are, as far as I can tell, no quotes from people *with* disabilities. Why not? Why did Featherstone go to so much trouble to get writings from parents, siblings, etc., almost all of which are extremely negative in tone and often pejorative? The children with disabilities tend to be portrayed as either too young to speak on their own behalf, or too disabled to speak for themselves at a later age.
Those who could potentially speak for themselves, such as Victoria Hayden's sister Mindy, are simply ignored. So we get Victoria's complaints that Mindy was wild, and we get the author's comment that Mindy is a "badly behaved little girl" but we don't hear from Mindy. In fact, in this entire book we never get a disabled child's point of view, that I could see.
Whose voices are worth hearing and who is "excess population?" to quote Mara Sapon-Shevin. I can see why parents would find this book a relief, because they will find someone who has struggled, and does not whitewash the truth with an "inspirational" book. But her lack of interest in listening to anyone with a disability is quite striking to me.
I'm going to read "No Pity" and donate this to the used bookstore.
Laying the groundwork.......2000-07-05
This book is a top-notch history of where we have been as a society dealing with children with special needs. It lays the groundwork for many of the programs and ideas we have today. Definitely worthwhile reading.
The wonderful gift for parents who have a disabled child.......2000-02-24
I discovered this book shortly after my daughter was born with a severe orthopedic birth defect, and it helped me a great deal to cope during those early months. Just reading other families' stories--and seeing that there are many ways for children to develop and be loved--was a genuine inspiration. The author's special vantagepoint, as both the mother of a disabled child and a specialist in child development, lends both sensitivity and objectivity to the writing. If you "don't know what to say" to a friend or relative who is facing this crisis, let this book do the communicating...
A wonderful source of support!.......1998-12-30
Although I have been aware of my daughter's disability for years, I found Ms. Featherstone's book to be a source of support and understanding which I couldn't find elsewhere. This book covers a wide range of disabilities from physical, to mental, to emotional handicaps and gives first-hand accounts from people who have various relationships with the disabled. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a niche in the world as a relative to a someone with a disability.
Excellent Introduction to Family Systems w/mentally retarded.......1998-08-27
It is difficult to believe that I would be the first to sing the praise of Ms. Featherstone's book on Amazon. This is a MUST READ for professionals going into the field of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the families who love them. As a sibling of a man with Down Syndrome I couldn't have written a better book myself. And as a Adult Sibling Selfhelp Support Group Facilitator I couldn't recommed a better book to my fellow siblings.
