Book Description
"A wonderful celebration of the attributes of guinea pigs... A popular pet and familiar subject is given new vigor and interest through originality, love, and respect." —The Boston Globe
I LOVE GUINEA PIGS is an affectionate guide to the most charming of very small animals. Did you know, for instance, that guinea pigs rarely get sick and love to eat? Or that they love one another and have adorable children too? Portrayed in all thier amiable chunkiness, guinea pigs finally recieve the tribute they so richly deserve.
Customer Reviews:
Good book if you have a guinea pig.......2007-06-13
I'm not sure if you don't have a guinea pig or your child doesn't have one at school but my son was very excited because it talks about types of guinea pigs and we enjoy it as we can compare it to ours behavior. The author clearly likes and has owned many and it gives advice about care without it just being a manual.
amm6.......2007-06-08
I am sure that this is an excellent book, but I bought it for my great-grandson for his birthday at the suggestion of his mother. However, his guinea pig died before he received it.
A Nice Introduction to G. Pig Ownership for Young Children - a review of "I Love Guinea Pigs".......2007-05-21
If you are considering a guinea pig as a pet, or if you have a child interested in guinea pigs then you might consider this book as an addition to your shelves. It has cute artwork and does a good job introducing various aspects of pigdom to small fry: from myths to diet to housing. There are descriptions of the many colors and hair-types that guinea pigs come in, as well as information about how to hold them and how long they live.
Four Stars. [B-] Cute artwork. Average Read-aloud. This is NOT a definitive book on guinea pigs. It is however a good introductory book you can use to discuss what pet ownership is all about. One highlight, in my opinion, is the author's discussion of the fact that these little animals don't live forever. He talks candidly and sweetly about the deaths of two of his favorite friends. He ends by saying that they are buried in his back yard and that he is "not sad about this - just happy to remember what a lot of pleasure" he shared with them.
A lovely introduction to Guinea Pigs.......2007-04-24
This is a sweet book with factual and anecdotal info re: guinea pigs. Our family especially loved the illustrations by Anita Jeram. We found this book an effective introduction to what guinea pigs are like, what they need (at a very basic level), and how they can enhance a family not quite ready for a larger pet (and not interested in hamsters/gerbils/mice/rats/birds/fish).
Absolutely Perfect! .......2005-09-08
The book was brand new, mailed very quickly. Absolutely easy. This seller deserves a perfect score. Thank you!

Book Description
Lola the hamster wakes up with something important to say. Special, tender words are on the tip of her tongue. Are the words meant for Mommy and Daddy? Or should she say them to her teacher? Or maybe to her friend Frankie, the Skateboard King? The day is frustrating indeed as the words puff out impatient Lola's cheeks. But eventually her powerful, magical words are sure to burst forth. They'll be worth the wait!
Children and adults alike will cherish this universal story of the joy of saying the words "I love you." This is a perfect gift for celebrating Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day, or any special occasion. I Love You So Much is a Children's Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection.

My Son Loved It.......2007-02-28
I purchased this book for my Kindergarten son to challenge his reading level. Before I could even show it to him, he found it and brought it to me and started to read it on his own. Then he asked me to read it to him before bed and he read it again the next morning. It looks like it will become one of his favorites. It is a cute story and a great read for early readers (K-2).
not all the others say.......2006-10-23
Although this book does have lovely illustrations and a theme about loving your family it really does not emphasize that expressing your love for someone is not something you do to just anyone. The little hamster girl tries to tell lots of people she loves them. Ultimately she tells her parents who she wanted to tell the most anyways, but there doesn't seem to be much focus on the fact that you shouldn't just tell anyone and everyone that you love them.
Some times you just have to say it..................2003-02-02
This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.
A Sweet Must Have.......2002-06-27
If you are like me-bring tissues. It's just so sweet, I cry every time and my son likes it so much that he still requests it (at almost 7).
Wonderful story and illustrations.......1997-10-01
I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.

Book Description
Lovable Lola is back in this delightful follow-up to the bestselling
I Love You So Much.
When Mommy and Daddy are gone, even for only a little while, Lola feels lonely. There is nobody around to give her a hug! Her baby-sitter is no fun, and the cartoons on TV can't snuggle. But then Lola comes up with a clever idea: she brings every cuddly thing she has into the living room and makes her very own Cuddle Island! Now Mommy and Daddy are in for a big surprise!
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Didn't like some of the content...........2000-03-26
I'm not normally this picky about kids' books, but this book rubbed me the wrong way. First of all, this is a book for toddlers/pre-schoolers, so what's up with Lola's parents leaving her with a babysitter who's not even in the house? Not to mention a babysitter that Lola doesn't seem to like much. Also, I know lots of people sleep w/ their kids, but we don't. I don't like the ending where Lola climbs in bed with her parents. Our son gets plenty of cuddling during the day; I really don't want him picking up the idea that he should try sleeping with us (we've tried it -- he takes up 2/3 of a king-sized bed!). But, my son loved Lola (especially the part where she sleeps upside down), so I edited the book to make it acceptable. I ripped out the last few pages, and covered over the offensive parts of the text with labels where I wrote my own, more acceptable text. The drawings are really great, I'll give the book that. You'll notice I didn't complain about my son getting the idea to make a mess of the house while building a cuddle island...that's because he already knows that trick. :-)
A loving & creative Lola with one DISTURBING illustration!.......1999-07-31
Only being familiar with this book and Norac's "I Love You This Much", Lola is a creative, loving hampster with a wonderfully infectious personality. I highly recommend the story for all parents and children to share. The "Cuddle Island" also provides a rainly afternoon activity for my own child and his playmates. UNFORTUNATELY, I was gravely DISTURBED upon seeing the illustration of the cartoon character near the beginning of the book. The character depicted in this illustration appears to be evil and holding a GUN. I'm sure Mr. Dubois could have drawn something else to show the lack of "cuddle" in his cartoon character. I find myself skipping the page when I get to it so my son does not see it. With the amount of tragedy surrounding guns in these times, it is a tragedy in itself to see a gun in the middle of a BEAUTIFULLY CREATIVE children's book. I would love to rate this book with 5+ stars, but find myself ethically unable.
Who can resist a book involving a family of hamsters?.......1999-01-27
If hamsters stood on their heads they would look just like Lola does in this book! Yes, this book is too cute to live, but the illustrations are great, and "Cuddle Island" is a pretty conceptual idea for a toddler hamster to create. Very imaginative. I plan using it for a Valentine's Day gift. If you love over-the-top lovey-dovey hamster families, this is definitely one to add to your collection. You won't want to leave your hamsters alone in the house after reading this book though--it would break your heart.

BEAUTIFUL KEEP SAKE.......2005-10-27
Little Mouse, I Love You is a wonderful story with beautiful illustration. My family enjoyed it so much, we have purchased Good Night Little Mouse and Thank you Little Mouse. All 3 stories are loving and caring and are well loved by our family. I highly recommend this this book and the entire series.
Wonderful keepsakes!.......2005-04-09
You can never have too many good bedtime books for young children (ages 4-7). Two books that my son Liam and I enjoyed recently are Little Mouse, I Love You and Good Night, Little Mouse. Written by Dugald Steer, illustrated by Caroline Anstey and published by Scholastic Canada Ltd., these stories deal with the subjects of love and noises in the night.
In Good Night Little Mouse, Little Mouse's Grandpa comforts her at bedtime by showing her those who were responsible for making the various noises that she hears. By showing Little Mouse an owl, a fox, an otter and some badgers who are going about their night time activities, Grandpa helps Little Mouse to overcome her fears.
Little Mouse, I Love You sees Little Mouse's "Gran" answering her granddaughter's question "What is love?" Gran answers the question by taking Little Mouse on a walk and showing her various animals who are caring for their young. Gran shows Little Mouse a mother wren teaching her chicks to fly, a mother squirrel sharing acorns with her children, a mother rabbit care for her injured child and a mother sheep who comforts her frightened lamb. All of these compassionate acts are displays of love. When evening comes Gran and Little Mouse return home where Little Mouse reflects on what she saw that day before going to bed.
Children will enjoy the subtle lessons of these stories which features nature and animals. The colorful, beautiful embossed illustrations and the flocked covers make these attractive books wonderful keepsakes. --N. Glenn Perrett

A financial Manual for Retail Florists
Book Description
Disputes between husbands and wives over the division of household labor are a leading cause of marital strife. And it's no wonder--women spend an average of 35 hours per week doing chores like cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, and laundry, while their husbands spend less than nine. Even when work is divided equally, how do busy families fit in the equivalent of a full-time job and still have time for more interesting and fun activities?
A Housekeeper Is Cheaper Than a Divorce: Why You CAN Afford to Hire Help and How to Get It presents a solution that's been largely overlooked for at least a couple of generations--delegating those chores to a paid worker. Despite the cultural myths that label household help as a luxury only for the wealthy, author Kathy Fitzgerald Sherman shows that hiring help can be not only an effective time-management tool but also the best economic decision for a family. She offers some ideas for rearranging budgets to hire the help that will give busy women time for work, play, family, exercise, even needed sleep.
Affordability isn't the only stumbling block addressed in the book, which explains both the whys and hows of hiring household help. Challenges dealt with include guilt feelings, tax mysteries, language barriers, training challenges, differing quality standards, and finding the perfect employee to handle unwanted daily chores. The book is loaded with helpful forms and checklists, along with dozens of anecdotes and examples from the author's own experiences and a nationwide survey of professional women.
Readers Will Learn: - Why household help is a time management tool, not a luxury for the wealthy
- Why depending on husbands to share housework is unrealistic and futile
- How to cost-justify a housekeeper's salary and sell the idea to a spouse
- How to decide whether to hire a nanny, a housekeeper, or a cleaning service
- How to define the job that needs doing and then find the right employee for that job
- How to organize a household so that a housekeeper can work effectively
- How to comply with the "nanny tax" laws
- How to apply management skills from the workplace to treat a housekeeper fairly, while getting the best possible performance for every hiring dollar
What is an overloaded family to do when household chores overwhelm them? There is a solution beyond constant bickering or exhaustion. After all...a housekeeper is cheaper than a divorce.
Customer Reviews:
Author's biases obvious throughout, arguments extreme, unconvincing.......2006-04-28
I am surprised by all the good reviews this book has received.
To start with, this book is mainly about a woman who says 1) she isn't very good at housework and 2) just plain doesn't want to do it, so she hires it out. Now, mind you, there is *nothing* wrong with that attitude, people hire out tasks all the time for those very reasons.
However, throughout the book, she makes derogatory assumptions such as:
Housekeeping is a no skills/low skills job
People who choose to be housekeepers aren't very smart
Children can't be trained to take over housekeeping tasks
And so on--too many to list here, and then in other parts of the book she goes and contradicts some of her previous statements.
Her arguments for hiring a housekeeper are of the whiny, I-shouldn't-have-to-do-this-demeaning-work type, and she brings up the tired, "traditional" man vs. woman arguments, as well as "we're all too busy". Do men and women argue over housework? Of course, but these days usually the arguments are neatnik vs. slob, not about who's doing (or not doing) the dishes. Are people busier than they used to be? Maybe, but that is a choice you make, not something forced on you.
Children need some chores to teach them life skills for when they leave home--the few chores she leaves for children in her book are a joke. If you're willing to take the time to train a new housekeeper, why not spend that quality time training your children instead? Not to mention that, if you're truly willing to pay for housekeeping, why not pay family first?
She has a cost justification worksheet, where for example she states that you save money by having your housekeeper prepare your meals. Well, no, you're shifting the costs from buying convenience foods and/or eating out to paying your new employee. And, by the way, her website where she says there are forms to use does not work.
In one way, this book was unintentionally funny--in the back she has a list of references. In it, she lists books such as The Sidetracked Sisters Catch Up On the Kitchen. If she'd taken time to actually *read* the book, and their first book, Sidetracked Home Executives, she would have learned that it would not be necessary to hire a housekeeper. Once you go to all the trouble to clean up for the housekeeper and get a system in place (which Sherman insists on, by the way, so that a housekeeper will *want* to work for you), the little that is left to do could easily be accomplished by her children, her, and her husband. For example, one of the DAILY tasks for her housekeeper is to vacuum the entry, living room, etc. Well, if you have a "no shoes" policy, you could vacuum once a week, or even every other week.
After reading this book, I still was not convinced that hiring out your housekeeping would allow you to increase your income, or even save you money, although it might make you feel better.
Now, on the other hand, a housekeeper would be quite helpful, say if you have several children under 5 at home, or are looking into one for an elderly parent, you're recovering from surgery, etc., and for someone in these situations, this book would be helpful for overcoming objections to hiring one. But for the vast majority of people, let's be honest, hiring out housekeeping is a *luxury*, not a necessity.
The book has a few useful food recipes, some tips on getting your point across, and a sample housekeeper schedule that you might find useful. Borrow from your library first, before buying.
I also suggest that people read "Your Money or Your Life" along with this book to get some perspective. Would you rather do a little housework here and there on your terms and timetable, or work at a job that not only costs you money to go to, but puts restrictions on how you spend your time and creates extra stress in your life so that you can hire a housekeeper?
No More Resentment Over Household Chores.......2006-01-28
I'm sold on the idea of getting household help, but many of my friends say they would rather do it on their own. Rather clean toilets than play golf? Rather mop the floor than spend time with their families? Hey, get your priorities straight.
A clean house creates a haven for you and your family, but it doesn't have to cost you all your free time. This book helps you understand the need for help in our over-scheduled lives and what can be traded to make it affordable.
The book is written in a straight-forward manner and really covers the topic well.
Here's a comment I found by the author on the Dollar Stretchers website: "Conflicts over housework are rapidly joining the 'big two' causes of arguments (sex and money) in two-career families. Household chores which include tasks like grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, ironing, daily tidy-up, and heavy cleaning average 35 hours a week in families with children, a burden that is borne disproportionately by women whether or not they work outside the home. After trying, and failing, to get their husbands to take on an equal share of this workload, women are paying the price through increased stress levels, loss of leisure time, and damage to their marriages because of rising levels of anger and resentment towards their spouses."
Selfless plugs.......2004-08-03
This "author", and I use that term loosely, has the nerve to write several "customer reviews" (as opposed to editorial reviews, which she is obviously not qualified to do) on several ground breaking amd creative books regarding social and economic conditions. For what reason? To shamelessly promote her own book. This is a pathetic attempt to plug her own work, and its a disgrace to legitimate authors. She ought to be ashamed of herself, not only for her comments, but for this pathetic literary attempt. Shame on you Kathy Sherman.
Helps you sort through emotion and logic.......2001-09-20
The thought of hiring someone to help in the house brought up a swirling mixture of emotions, making it hard to logically decide if household help was right for me. Besides covering all the how-to issues of placing ads, interviewing, training, and paying taxes, in her book Kathy helps readers sort out the emotional side of deciding to hire household help. In summation, if we are willing to buy a meal from a fast food chain that pays its workers a bit above minimum wage, why not pay someone to cook a meal for us in our own kitchen (at a higher hourly wage)? Ditto for paying for laundry services, a grocery store that picks out our food, or a babysitter to watch the kids while we do chores. Because I am a married woman without kids, I initially decided to hire a cleaning service to come once a month instead of hiring my own part-time employee. But when my husband ruptured his Achilles' tendon, leading to three successive casts and rehabilitation, my work activities as a self-employed writer and real estate investor came to a crashing halt. Much of my time was spent doing his share of the chores plus taking care of his new needs. I reread Kathy's book, placed an ad in the local college newspaper, and received three calls a day until I canceled the ad early (I decided it was worth it to offer $11 per hour to get the best applicants I could afford). The mature student I hired has worked in the past for a cleaning service, is more of a neatnik than I am, and is a talented cook! Even after my husband's leg heals, I suspect we are going to continue hiring part-time help. It is absolutely wonderful to leave my computer and walk upstairs into a clean house with fresh baked cookies cooling on the counter! For us, it is worth it to economize in other areas (our newest car is 8 years old) in order to afford household help. I'm glad Kathy wrote this book because it helped us make a decision that worked for us.
Help Around the House.......2001-04-23
This book practically saved my marriage. We were both working full-time but then had another full-time job at home so we barely had time for our marriage. The housekeeper isn't that expensive after we analyzed things.
Another book that we got that really got our marriage back on track was -- The Romantic's Guide. It gave us hundreds of tips and ideas on things to do to get closer again. I'd highly recommend both.
