2 out of 5 stars too basic even for the beginner.......2005-12-28

if you want something with new styles,i wouldnt choose this book.it has the "old" favourites like pull backs, basic braid and even a pony tail(and yes it even tells you how to twist the hair elastic around the ponytail!)
it does include hair wraps, instructions for hair accessories and corn rows and fish tail braids(which are slightly more advanced than the others but still in the beginners bracket)
for clearer instructions(for all the braids in this book and more)id recommend "braids and bows" by anne akers johnson and for the more unusual(if you can call it that)id recommend "more beautiful braids" by patricia cohen.
this would be good for beginners but as it includes instructions for the ponytail(who in the world cannot do a ponytail?)even the beginnr may be reluctant to use this book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Braids, Barrettes and Bows.......2005-08-02

Very good book with easy to follow directions. I was mainly looking for barrette instuctions.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the [money] spent!!!.......2003-05-21

I like to check out the reviews on books before I buy since there is no way to actually thumb through the book and see for yourself if it is what you want. Most of the time this has done fine for me and I have enjoyed what I purchased. Not this time. For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would give this book any more than 1-2 stars...5 stars is just absurd!!! Looking through the pages of this book all I could think of was, "you've got to be kidding me!" So there goes another [amount of money]out the window. I guess if you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about hairbraiding and you can't find a friend to show you the BASICS then you might find something here. I mean they "teach" you how to create a PONYTAIL...is there anyone on the planet that doesn't know how to do a ponytail? Honestly? I was looking for a book that would offer some variety. I have two small daughters one starting school next year and I wanted to be able to do somthing with their hair other than a pony tail, pig tails, or a basic french braid. So, I bought this book on Braids...what a mistake. I will go to the book store next time so that I can look through the pages! I wanted to give this book 1 star, but I changed my mind due to the fact that there are a couple pages on how to make scrunchies and barretts and the end of the book. So one star for basic french braiding for someone who is an absolute beginner and one star for the barretts section. Again, this was not something I was interested in, and also something I think most people can figure out fairly easily on their own, but none the less I decided to give this book 2 stars...which is being VERY, VERY generous on my part! If you are looking for a book to give you some ideas on styling hair I highly suggest you look elsewhere. Happy book hunting - I hope this helps someone out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Quick Ideas for School Hair Styles.......2002-10-15

Lots of easy ideas for quickly getting your kids' hair ready (from K-12 and beyond!). And some projects for them to craft, too. My daughter likes the clear pictures, which means she can quickly flip through it and say, "I want my hair like this today." None of the styles take more than a few minutes to do, but they look nice. These are not very complex (no 4-strand braiding, here), but hold up well through the day.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for men too!.......1997-12-22

I am a male with long hair, and I found this book to be most helpful in giving me direction how to french braid my hair, and do cute styles with a barrette. I would recomend it to any males with long hair!!

In rural Auburn, California, Shatoiya and Richard de la Tour have created an elaborate herb garden full of secret pathways and hidden rooms. Open to the public during the day, the garden has become their home, their religion, and their livelihood. "On our two and a half acres we now have ten theme gardens, three ponds, a nursery, two classrooms, a cabin for overnight students, an herb-drying shed, a chicken coop, a llama pen, and a thriving herb shop."

In The Herbalist's Garden, the de la Tours survey nine other herb gardens along with their own, covering regions from British Columbia to Connecticut. Most of the gardeners profiled here are hippies of the first order: they build peace signs into their garden design and would rather die than use a pesticide. Perhaps the most remarkable character profiled is John Forti, owner of Plimoth Plantation, a garden with a sign at the entrance that declares, "Welcome to the 17th Century." At Plimoth Plantation, staffers dress like pilgrims, wearing wide-brimmed hats and long, hot dresses.

Such eccentrics make The Herbalist's Garden an entertaining read, yet it's also informative, with wide-ranging advice on the medicinal and mystical uses of herbs. Throughout, inspirational tidbits such as, "In the core of our being, we yearn to be connected to something real" indicate that the de la Tours clearly have a life philosophy they hope to get across. Somewhere between a coffee-table book, a manifesto of spiritual inspiration, and a practical guide to plant use, The Herbalist's Garden transports the reader in many ways--and the photos are to die for. --Emily White

                5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring.......2004-06-01

I number THE HERBALIST'S GARDEN among the most inspiring books I've read. This guided tour of several outstanding herb-based gardens (public, private, small, large, urban, rural, you name it) is filled with informative and charmingly written text along with gorgeous color photography, and augmented by little "boxes" that suggest ways to incorporate an idea into your own gardens, or provide neat recipes for teas and baked goods. (The peppermint brownies are especially fantastic -- and easy!)

As a novice herb gardener tending my first 4x10 bed in its first season, I was deeply impressed by the gardeners (and plants!) featured in this book. I got the book from the library, started reading, and immediately purchased my own copy from Amazon. I need to have this one around! It's a great book to come back to for tips when you're worried, glorious colors when it's wintertime, and inspiration whenever you want it.

Each section tells the story of a lovely garden and the people who have made it what it is, then profiles their three favorite herbs, suggesting culinary and medicinal uses and giving instructions for planting and care. Gardeners and herbalists will not regreat the purchase of this beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say? This is my favorite herb garden book!..........2002-04-14

Herbalist Shatoiya de la Tour, her husband, Richard, along with a very talented photographer, Saxon Holt, have produced a treasure of a book! This book takes us on a journey to visit ten exceptional herb gardens in the United States. First stop - Richard and Shatoiya's own garden which she describes as "a garden to serve the community". She shares her story of how her garden, Dry Creek Herb Farm came into being and has evolved over the years to become a refuge for herb lovers and learners across the country. Next stop is Sage Mountain, the Vermont garden of the highly respected herbalist, Rosemary Gladstar. Also spend time at Deer Run Herb Sancuary, Plimoth Plantation, Evergreen Herb Garden, the city garden of Brian Fikes and Greg Howes, Dr. Dukes "Farmette", Ravenhill Farm, Caprilands, and Saso Herb gardens.
The photographs are exquisite, probably the best gardening photography I have ever seen. You will also get to meet these very interesting gardeners, get a glimpse into their own life stories to learn what first attracted them to herb gardening and how herbs have become the focus of thier lives. I LOVE this book and have turned to it for inspiration over and over again. I feel you will be very pleased with it. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A book for witches and other magi............2001-07-21

THE HERBALIST'S GARDEN is subtitled a "guided tour of 10 exceptional herb gardens" and it is just that. I don't think you could get much closer to the real thing unless you made the actual physical trip to each of these gardens. Perhaps the only drawback for me is that so many of them are on the West Coast because seeing them makes me want to SEE them.

The photographs by Saxon Holt are some of the best. In each picture, I can clearly distinguish one plant from another--no small feat since to capture one plant clearly often causes others to be distorted. For example in one shot the viewer can raise her eyes from lettuce in the first row to cabbage in the second row to onions in the third row. I guess this is "trick" photography, but it's great. Although the photos are not three dimensional, they remind me of old 3-D viewer I had when I was a kid or the holograms of today where you can hold the picture to your eye and feel as if you are "inside" the frame.

The de la Tours have done a fabulous job of compiling, writing, and editing their book. They are down to earth and friendly and the text is newsy and informative. The de la Tours own Dry Creek Farm and Learning Center in Auburn California--the first garden on the guided tour which features the gardens of several other herbalist/gardeners and writers. Each section shows a ground plan for the featured garden. There are plenty of shots of the gardens including entrances and paths, and unique features found at the various sites.

Dry Creek Farm features a children's garden, a medicine-wheel garden, and a moon garden. The medicine-wheel garden is festooned with multi-colored prayer ribbons--hung out by the de la Tour's students at the Spring Equinox--that will be burned at the Winter Solstice. Along the edge of the medicine-wheel garden are plants representing the Zodiac Signs--Lavender for the Gemini, Mint for Virgo, and Lemon Balm for Cancer.

The Moon Garden is composed of a Catalpa tree surrounded by a circle shaped garden. The garden surface is composed of white gravel chips and outlined with smooth river stones. Both the full moon and the cresent are delineated. The full moon is white pebbles sans plants, the crescent is set off by Artemesia, the ghostly white plant that bears the "other" name of Diana, queen of the Fairies, Queen of the Witches and Queen of the Moon. A statue of a coyote (Diana's hund?) sits below the mobile moons hanging from the Catalpa tree.

There are photos of garden layouts, photos of specific beds, photos of smiling owners/gardeners and plenty of close-ups of the herbs recommended by the 10 herbalists. The text is extremely informative and inspiring.

Enhanced with the color photography of Saxon Holt, Shatoiya and Richard de la Tour's The Herbalist's Garden provides the reader with an exception, fascinating, and informative guided tour through ten unique herb gardens, introducing the people who grew them and the plants that inspired those master gardeners. After an informative introduction (The Path of the Herb Gardener), we are treated to the Dry Creek Herb Farm & Learning Center (Auburn, CA); Rosemary Gladstar's Sage Mountain (East Barre, VT); Deer Run Herb Sanctuary (Napa, CA); Plimoth Plantation (Plymouth, MA); EverGreen Herb Garden (Placerville, CA); The City Garden (Sacramento, CA); Dr. Duke's "Farmette" (Fulton, MD); Ravenhill Farm (Vancouver Island, British Columbia); Caprilands (Coventry, CT); and Saso Herb Gardens (Saratoga, CA). A very highly recommended, inspiring, beautifully presented work, The Herbalist's Garden is enhanced with a concluding commentary (Manifesting Your Own Vision), a resources section, and an index.

What a joy to discover this book! The De La Tours find a deep spirituality in gardening, even everyday gardening like I do, and convey that inspiration and meaningfulness to the reader. I enjoyed the beautiful photographs, the recipes, and especially the personal stories about each herbalist and their garden. The writing style is straightforward and often humorous and touching. I expect to enjoy gardening more than ever now that I have read The Herbalist's Garden.

                  Book Description

Cougar Annie's Garden tells the haunting tale of a five-acre garden in the wilderness of Vancouver Island's West Coast. Surrounded by rainforest and mountains, inaccessible and remote, this garden has endured for over eighty years. It is powerful with story, rich with legend and history, and Margaret Horsfield's book brings all these elements together in her critically-acclaimed book. Cougar Annie's Garden has been widely acclaimed in Canada since its publication.

In 1915 Ada Annie Rae-Arthur came to this part of the coast as a pioneer settler. She set to work clearing the land. What emerged was no ordinary stump farm out in the bush, it was a vision, a dream and a passion. Slowly, over the years, a garden of strange, mesmerising beauty took shape in its clearing in the deep forest, featuring hundreds of varieties of imported shrubs and trees and perennials.

Wily and stubborn , Ada Annie operated a mail-order nursery garden; she also ran a general store and a post office from her home. She bore eight of her eleven children here, and she outlived and outworked four husbands. A crack shot and a skilled trapper, she became a cougar bounty hunter, killing over seventy of the big cats. She became known as Cougar Annie. Until she was in her mid-nineties, she remained in her beloved garden,

Many types of West coast lore, many strands of history combine in this book to weave together Cougar Annie's story. Many tales are told of the grim courage, blind hope and bitter losses that have shaped history here.

Time plays ironic tricks on this isolated part of the coast. Failed enterprises lie rotting in the bush. The population has diminished. Settlements and homesteads have been abandoned. The ver landscape has been radically altered because of the logging in this part of Clayoquot Sound. People have left and dreams have died, all around here.

Cougar Annie's Garden tells of a dream that has survived, and lives on. Against all odds, this remarkable garden has outlived its equally remarkable owner. Although it was radically overgrown at the time of her death in 1985, it has now been completely restored, and now enters a new era. Thriving with fresh energy and beauty, the garden stands sentinel on this part of the coast, an indomitable survivor.

The non-profit Boat Basin Foundation is taking over ownership and administration of the garden, its aim being to preserve the garden and to establish a site for botanical field study in Clayoquot Sound. Construction on study cabins has now begun and the first group of students, from San Francisco, has already spent time at the garden on a study trip.

This is Margaret Horsfield's fourth book. It features art work by Takao Tanabe and Briony Penn and a foreword by Peter C. Newman. In the spring of 2000 this book received the Roderick Haig-Brown award for best book about British Columbia during the past year; it was also shortlisted for the Hubert Evans non-fiction prize and it was runner-up for the Lieutenant-Governor's medal for historical writing about British Columbia.

The book is a full colour production, with over 100 colour pictures and 50 black and whites.

This exchange of letters between two friends is a real encouragemnt to slow down and look at what happens in our gardens, yards and all of nature, during the course of a year. The fact that one writer is disabled is a plus for this book. Her viewpoint is vital to the slowing down process. The memories these two women share about gardens are inspiring, expecially to those who are keeping garden journals or should be! It will help the reader to be more observant.

                              Book Description

In Conducting Scientifically Crafted Child Custody Evaluations, author Jonathan W. Gould compiles the literature on child custody evaluation into a coherent, logically integrated format that can be applied directly to practice. This empirically based book represents state-of-the-art forensic techniques in the rapidly changing field of child custody evaluation. Gould challenges this dynamic field to further advance by enhancing its level of professionalism and strengthening its scientific basis. Currently, only 10% of divorcing couples with children pursue resolution of custody disputes. The author questions whether this minority comprises a unique population that requires separate, uniquely developed intervention protocols. He asks, "If the people who request forensic child custody evaluation comprise a unique population, how useful are our assessment tools when they have not been validated on this distinctive group?" Proposing new assessment models that are, in fact, based on studies with this population, Gould emphasizes that this is one of the fastest growing areas of professional involvement for practicing psychologists, counselors, and social workers. Divided into three parts, the book covers a conceptual framework, the evaluation process, and suggestions for the evaluator in preparing for court.

This book targets psychologists, social workers, and students in the fields of family social work, family psychology, family counseling, forensic psychology, family studies, and family law.

His case studies are compelling examples of the mistakes that dominate the real work products of the field. I love the way at the start of each chapter he presents a reasonable sounding evaluation (unless you know from experience what mistakes to look for), and then by the end of the chapter you understand that it was meant as an example of what NOT to do, and you now have a deep understanding of why.
