I LOVE the allen guides! What better way to learn than to get right in there and see it. Sure its not the same as shoeing thousands of horses or picking out the feet of millions but this is second best. A picture is worth a thousand words. And if you're a pre-vet student or a bacyard horse owner you should really know all there is to know about your horses' entire base of being- his feet! This book makes it enjoyable and educational too!

It's hard to describe, but you only have to sink your fingers into natural wool to appreciate its magical qualities. It's a tactile experience that is not only appealing, but also sparks creativity and imagination. This fine book offers many craft and project ideas using this delightful medium. The brightly colored photographs are inspiring in themselves! The first part of the book deals with creating wool pictures, including techniques and many examples of classic stories. Next are projects for making woolen dolls, gnomes and animals, some with a wire substructure that gives them flexibility. The last chapter gives practical advice and techniques for using unspun sheep's wool in a group setting with young children and includes a puppet script. A motivational and useful addition to your craft library.

simple, yet difficult.......2006-01-30

Magic wool includes two sections: one is devoted to two dimensional pictures made with dyed wool and the other to making unspun wool dolls. The book doesn't offer detailed instructions. The procedure for making pictures is simple: you simply add layer after layer of wool on felt surface. But, making pictures is nevertheless difficult as you depend heavily on your own skill and talent. This book is useful because you can learn from examples (beautiful images from fairytales and legends) and try to copy skilfully made shadows, glows and textures. It takes time - don't expect your first picture to look like those in the book.

Nice but I wonder how easy it would be to teach to children.......2005-11-17

The cover is enticing and the pictures inside are very appealing. The instructions are clear and concise but I get the strong impression that to achieve this level of detail you need quite a bit of experience at it and an older, or more patient child to do this with. If you have a fair amount of experience handling wool and fibres this may not be such an issue as you can probably work quickly and not need to remove or rework you pieces which always frustrates children so. There is also a lot of ironing and some fine stitching in this method which means a lot of adult input in my house.

That said, my six and half year old really wants to make the Cinderella picture!

Merian's New Book of Flowers, first published in 1680, continues to be a source of fascination throughout the world today.

The Book of Flowers, published in Nuremburg between 1675 and 1680 in three volumes of twelve sheets, is the first work that Maria Sibylla Merian published and marketed herself. Its enormous success encouraged her to reprint and colour all 36 plates, adding a preface before publishing it in 1680 as the New Book of Flowers. As Merian herself expressed in her foreward, the publication was meant to be an inspiration to others: "In that it may be useful for traveling and painting, and for the women to sew, and all lovers of art for benefit and joy."

my wife and i got this volume because we like her work, but were disappointed when it arrived because although the format and care with the reproductions in the book is very good, it does not represent the Merian work that we appreciate. this is what can happen when you have to buy a book sight unseen and the "look inside this book" doesn't offer any interior images. we like her later work and will continue to look for reproductions of that work.

I couldn't resist this book because I simply like to look at beautiful things - the prints of flowers & insects are exquisite. I like the manageable shape & size of this book, as well as the texture of the paper (very good quality for such a modestly priced book.) Best surprise however, was the information about Maria Sibylla Merian provided at the back of the book - she was a fascinating woman: artist, explorer, botanist, publisher, designer & teacher of embroidery, and provider for her family. I intend to collect more books of her work.

I am in love with this book! It is clear, concise, well-written, and has wonderful graphics. I am a landscape architecture student at UCD and this book has taught me more than any of my teachers combined! Highly recommend.

I am a student at Kansas State University in Landscape Design, and this book is wonderful for getting ideas, symbols, and disign techniques. My professors own this book, and constantly approve and recommend this book for sudents. Although it is titled for a private resident, professional landscapers use this book also. This is one book you should add to your library.

Great Resource for Landscape Architects.......2002-11-19

Booth and Hiss describe in much detail the design process for residential landscapes. They strike a proper balance between basic design concepts and essential business knowledge. Landscape design students would do well to internalize the process described here, since the book's practical focus is unlikely to be duplicated in their Landscape Architecture curriculum.

Excellent.......2002-05-18

This book is truly a gem -- it clearly and concisely explains every imaginable aspect of residential landscape design using very straigtforward and easy to understand text and diagrams.

Ignore the fact that this seems to have been written as some sort of textbook for a beginer's course for professional landscape architects. I am an ordinary homeowner and I found the book to be easy and enjoyable to read, and quite educational. I now feel like I understand enough to design a professional quality landscape for my own home.

In case it matters, I own the second edition (Amazon is now selling the third edition). I can only assume that this latest edition is even better than the edition I have.

This book was awarded the 2002 Otis Dudley Duncan award by the American Sociological Association. The following is an excerpt from the award presentation.

In Continuity and Change in the American Family, Lynne Casper and Suzanne Bianchi lead us on a journey through family life in the contemporary U.S. and recent changes therein. They provide a comprehensive and rich description of the social demography of the family. Like Rogers, Hummer, and Nam, they are painstaking and careful and do an outstanding job synthesizing, reporting and summarizing an enormous amount of material.

Topics include cohabitation, childbearing, single mother families, fathering, grandparenthood, child care, child wellbeing, the economic causes and consequences of family structure, combining work and family. Each of these topics, in themselves, is nearly a tome. (For example, the chapter entitled "Economic Causes and Consequences of Changing Family Structure" includes treatment of trends in income and poverty; the feminization of poverty; changing employment and earnings of women; declining male wages; the juvenilization of poverty; children's material hardship; income inequality; the linkage between changing economics and family formation; the importance of male income for marriage market; women's economic independence; and the consequences of marital disruption for mothers and fathers.)

Throughout, Casper and Bianchi provide a rich blend of past research and theory along with original analyses of new data. These analyses suggest a "quieting" of family change and kudos to the authors for never letting the truth be compromised by exaggerated claims.
