Hidden San Diego.......2007-07-19
I'm planning a trip to San Diego and I needed some ideas about what to actually do while I'm there. I already knew that I'd want to go to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. I also knew that I wanted to spend some time at the beach and find a good historical park or museum. Apart from that, I was completely lost.
Hidden San Diego came to my rescue. I immediately opened this book to the section of the city where I'll be staying. I quickly came to realize that I could easily spend my entire vacation without leaving that community. There were plenty of things to do and see. After I felt confident that I could find my way around in that little section, I quickly expanded my searches to areas further away.
Still, probably my favorite portion of this book was the sections on dining. It's hard to find a good place to eat in an unfamiliar city. Then, if you are lucky enough to serendipitously find a good restaurant, you tend to stick to that one place and have to endure one type of cuisine for the entire trip. The restaurant advice in Hidden San Diego is like having a good friend who knows all of the best places to eat. No matter what your budget, what kind of atmosphere you'd prefer, or what type of fare you are feeling like this book has enough choices that you never have to eat at the same place twice.

This book with its beautiful real-life illustrations would be a great one to give a child as a gift. It would acquaint him or her with the life process of a baby panda's first year. The words and sentences are short and readable for a child in the early grades. It would also be a good read-aloud book for someone with a small child who loves to be read to. I highly recommend it.
Nice factual book for 4-6 year olds.......2007-01-15
My daughter is panda-crazy, so we purchased this book as a Christmas present. It was everything we hoped it would be: nice overview of panda development leveled for kindergarten/first grade readers. It has straighforward text for younger readers, coupled with more detailed information for older readers. With my 3 year old son, we read the straight text; with my 5 year old daughter we read the little detail blurbs as well. It has lovely photos and since it deals with a baby panda it was a huge hit with my kids. I would recommend this to anyone with kids who love pandas, or anyone looking to add science/nature books to their pre-school/kindergarten collection. Additionally, I would recommend Emperor's Egg, which deals in a similar way with penguins, although it uses illustrations rather than photos.

The photos in this book are absolutely amazing! Starting with Hua Mei's 1st teeny tiny black & white photo camera that had been installed inside the panda den, and the book ending 1 year later. I can't say enough about the photos!
This is the 1st year in the life of Hua Mei and is pronounced Hwa May. In China, one name can mean different thing and Hua Mei's means Splended Beauty AND China-USA. The birth of Hua Mei in 1999 in the San Diego Zoo connects both China, the country where pandas roam and here in the Us where she lives.
This is one of those books that grows with it's young reader! The author Joanne Ryder lots of information on each page. There is a big bold font that tells the story and then a smaller not so small font that gives additional information! I just can not say enought wonderful words about this book! A definate book to have in your home library!
Beautiful and educational.......2001-03-22
I'll be perfectly honest: I love following Hua Mei's story at the San Diego Zoo web site. I'm a complete sucker for panda stories. So I was pleased to finally see a more permanent record of Hua Mei's first year.
While I bought this book for the photographs (which are plentiful, large, and beautiful), this book should also appeal to children and parents because of its text (or perhaps I should say "texts"). The author has written two parallel texts: one fairly simple and straightforward for younger readers, printed in large type, and a slightly more complex one in smaller type, giving more detailed information about pandas. By creating a book that appeals to more than one reading level, Ms. Ryder has given us a book that parents will be able to share with their young children as they grow older and learn to read.
Make no mistake; this is not a detailed textbook about pandas. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend George Schaller's LAST PANDA (also available from Amazon.com, coincidentally enough). But this is a good introduction for young children, who may be able to indentify with the young Hua Mei. For older panda lovers, this is an excellent collection of photographs. The only thing that keeps me from giving this book five stars (besides the fact that I never give anything five stars) is that I can never get enough information about Hua Mei.

I was 11/12 when that was written and now I am 16 going to be 17. So I'm sorry but your attempt at a "Low Blow" has failed. Maybe three years from now you can critize this review.

I think it's hilarious that, in defending her father against Mr. Whitt's crticism of his poor grammar and spelling, Ms. Ross-Ryan uses words and grammar that are unrecognizable as English and do, indeed, make her father look like a literary genius. The apple really does not fall far from the tree.
Congratulations to author for speaking out.......2004-11-20
I found this book to be nothing short of a gripping and devestating account of the dilemma facing captive elephants and their keepers. Ryan writes out of highly personal convinction and candor. The result is an intimate and revealing memoir I found difficult to put down. This is not a comprehensive guide to elephant captivity or training methods and should not be purchased as such. Instead, it should be read as one man's experience and eventual confrontation with a sad and pervasive mentality surrounding treatment of captive animals. Ryan succeeds in making us (those of us with compassion for our fellow animals) frustrated, horrified and desperate to believe in an alternative to violent methods of keeping elephants.
My hearty congratulations to the author for his courage. Essential reading for policy makers, animal keepers and those frequenting zoos. There must be a better way!

A True Story About What Mistreated Elephants go through........2002-01-21
First off I would like to say to Mr. Mark Witt, that reveiw was very harsh considering all the hard labor my Father went through to write this book! He deserves a A (insted of a B!) I'm sure that if u were to write a book it would not be perfect either! Anyways i belive this book is the cold hard truth about what these animals go through. I would definatly recomend this to people that are intersted in this area.

As an Animal Rights activist, I ordered this book with greatenthusiasm, thinking that I would get a lot of first hand informationabout how animals are trained and treated in the zoo and circus industries. My first impression of "Keepers of the Ark" was when I got the envelope in the mail and thought, "that's an awfully small book for ..[the price]." Especially for a paperback!
After reading the book I can honestly say that it was informative, enlightening, and even enjoyable. But I was also taken aback at how lousy the editing was! There were spelling errors, grammar errors, run on sentences, just like as if it was taken directly from someone's notebook with no editing what so ever. Considering that the author really lays into the management people above him while he worked in the WAP for not having any college degrees (while he did), it rings as being pretty hypocritical that the published work looks so bad from the grammar standpoint.
And the book really is too expensive for a 180+ page paperback.
The author gets B, and the publisher a D-.
I would suggest checking it out from the library instead of buying it.

A Wealth of Quilting Projects and Ideas.......2007-02-07
This book does just what the author intended. It shows you a large variety of blocks and layouts, and inspires you to try your own layouts and color schemes, although you can certainly make the quilts just as Judy Martin shows them. Even my husband got into the act, saying he liked this or that layout, or suggesting a different color scheme.
I really like star blocks to begin with, so I really enjoyed finding a source showing so many variations, some good alternate blocks to go with them, and some traditional and not-so-traditional layouts. There are instructions for cutting each block in a variety of sizes. This allows you to plan a quilt with a few large blocks, which would highlight special prints or quilting, or a "scrappy" quilt with many smaller blocks, or anything in between.

I am impressed with this book and a little dissapointed. The book is filled with stars that look different and very neat. Also, the settings are wonderful and something you don't see everyday. The things I didn't like were the pictures of the quilts. The quilts are not real quilts but filled in with color. I guess I get more inspired by the real thing. And these quilts would take an exceptional amount of time to make. I didn't care for the layout of the directions either. I am glad that I purchased it for the different ideas.

This book gives fledgling gardeners an overview of practical perennial gardening techniques. I especially liked the section about developing garden plans because it simplified what always appeared to me to be a complex process. The book could use more information about soil preparation, such as double digging, and effective plant combinations. Overall, though, "Easy-Care Perennial Gardens" provides readers with an easy-to-read primer that whets the appitite for more books on the subject.

One man's views.......2007-07-18
I'm captivated by female beauty, so I was interested at the prospect of a book dedicated to the subject from an artist's perspective. Unfortuately, the author has framed some of his statements to be representative of "most men." It's annoying and sloppy. For example, commenting that many women now shave their pubic hair, he observes that "most men" actually prefer women with pubic hair (without even broaching whether its trimmed or groomed). He fails to acknowledge that preferences vary widely and offers no data to support his statement. He has a section on body piercing where he goes to some lengths to explain how he's finally come around to accept the idea, but only in certain parts of the body, and again women are better off unadorned. Opinions on that subject also vary from person to person. Rather than discussing his preferences as strictly his own (e.g. "As a painter, I prefer 'x' because...") or doing some actual psychological or historical research, this book comes across as the organized ramblings of one opinionated man (whose opinions I don't share) - not intelligent discourse about a beautiful, age-old topic. I returned the book.

Intensely sensous, but not pornographic at all, it lovingly examines and exalts all the components of her body, underlining their significance from an aesthetic and erotic viewpoint.
It should be required reading for all photographers and painters alike as an introduction to the appreciation of the female body.
Art teachers had better leave anatomy manuals on the bookshelves from time to time and refer to this book as they teach life drawing classes, to arouse the students' genuine interest in what they are drawing.

This is an amazing book, more so as the author is man, but one with unusual perception when it comes to understanding the female psyche about their bodies and sexuality. Sheldon Filger presents the entire female body as an artistic tapestry, and enables the reader to understand the heavenly beauty that is the body of a woman. I love the fact that male and female perspectives are given about many of the positions. The kind of insights you'd get from your bestfriend if they new about this stuff. Very practical, so I can creatively adapt the techniques.

I like this book because it has simple drawings with very little text. As well, I like the fact that it has images from around the world through time and cultures. I recommend this book especially for women wanting more easy sexual information. Definitely not a porn book for men- this is done soley for the purpose of positions with a healthy,loving view of sex. Not a lot of new positions for me/us but very fun to view with a partner! The positions are quite do-able if you are in relatively good shape and not a couch potato. This is one of my favorites because of its simplicity and great pictures.
