The shipment arrived very very fast, the book stinks but that is not the shippers problem.

5 out of 5 stars This book has already paid for its self........2005-03-08

This book is a little large to be carrying around, however I still do carry it to places that I already know will have the pattern I am looking for.
The forward describes "Elegant" glassware as handmade and acid etched glassware that was sold by department and jewelry stores during the Depression era through the 1950's, differentiating it from the dime store and giveaway glass that has become known as Depression glass. The word "Elegant" has become "official" nomenclature among today's dealers for designating handmade glass.
It is well organized with the glass patterns in alphabetical order and the prices in columns by color of glass. Most of the pictures are color and have good enough definition to identify what you are looking at. There are a contents by pattern and a contents by company.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2002-08-18

Orginally purchased for my mother, I purchased it also after looking through it. The original reason for the book was to attempt to id some etched glass, the glass was not in the book, but it was worth it anyway. Beautiful photos, good writing, I saw pieces I had not known exsited. Who knew that such elegant depression glass was out there! I would not recommend it for the "flea market" or "yard sale" groupie, one of his Collectors Encyclopedias may work better, but it is still a very nice book and well worth it if you collect or deal in higher end depression glass.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to inform and direct you !.......2002-04-05

This is another fave of mine from Gene Florence! He sure knows what he is writing about!!!This book is loaded with color photos of many different types of depression glass.I never realized how many patterns, and companies, there were out there!!!He also is very thorough about listing what pieces were in what colors and the values for each color.
Overall a fantastic book!

Book Description

The bamboo fly rod represents the pinnacle of the fly-fishing art: its apparent simplicity and delicacy belie the craftsmanship and strength that are the hallmarks of all great rods.

Wayne Cattanach begins in the Kwangsi and Kwantung provinces of China, where Tonkin bamboo takes about eight years to develop the qualities that distinguish it from all other materials: a tensile strength akin to steel, light in weight, with the flexibility that gives all bamboo rods their relaxed action.

He describes the process that will take anyone from lengths of hard, raw bamboo to a beautiful finished rod with clear, step-by-step instructions, including how to: find the best supplies; select tools and materials; make and use heat treaters and binders; select rod taper, weight, and action; cut culms; straighten bamboo strips; primary and secondary planing; stagger bamboo strips; give proper heat treating; bind strips; apply finish; mount the reel seat, ferrules, and tip top; and much more.

Scores of illustrations and line drawings demonstrate crucial techniques that before this book could only be guessed at, and Wayne's years of experience with pupils and bamboo are brought to bear at every step as his invaluable tips not only instruct, but also explain how to avoid common beginners' mistakes. This is surely the most thorough book available for those who want to have the pleasure of making, and fishing, their own bamboo fly rods.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hndcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods: Not for everyone.......2002-01-23

This is a good reference book, but should not be your sole source of information. Too much is left out that is critical to building a first rod. For example, a lot of details are missing with regards to what you need to do with the blank once it comes out of the glue binder. WHat about scraping, filing, sanding and keeping those sharp edges? The book could also do with better organization.

              Book Description

THE MOON AT NOON is an intriguing account of life in Africa during European colonization. The book tells the story of the arrival of the Europeans in Africa around 18th century in search of wealth. It also narrates a story of the Africans who live and experience the colonialism and the vivid custom and traditions of the African, and much more...According to the book, like any good mother of Udura, Ugonne raised her son in the traditional way. She kept him close to her as they worked side by side in the field. Chike loved his mother and everything that she taught him. "Never use your left hand to receive anything from anyone, especially your elders. It is an insult to do that," she told him. There was never any indication to Ugonne or any of the other good mothers in the village of Udura that their children would one day abandon the wisdom and culture tradionally handed down to them. What happened to Chike and the other children of Udura was unexpected as the moon at noon. To learn more about what happened to Chike and the other children of Udura, read the rest of the story from the book since there is no enough space to put the entire story on this screen.

              4 out of 5 stars Super Novel.......2004-05-04

After reading the Moon at Noon, I was delighted the way Mr. Kalu wrote the book. He told the story everyone is aware of in a simple style, which makes it easy for anyone to understand. I love the way he presents this true story with fictional characters that makes it looks like the characters did witness the colonial events in Africa. Bravo, Mr. Kalu. That was a very excellent creative work.

3 out of 5 stars How can the moon come out at noon? That doesn't make sense!.......2002-03-16

This book was interesting, but not that much. I read it, well most of it anyway. Then I got hungry and went to the kitchen for a snack. Oh well. I gave it three stars, but if i could i would give it one moon.... at noon! haha

3 out of 5 stars Uche Kalu for president!.......2001-02-24

While the book was moderately interesting, the author was very intriguing. This is an excellent tale that makes you remember things that happened to you in the past while you were growing up in the past, you know, like back in the day. I enjoyed learning about African culture, and the book was very informative in regards to the life of young males in Africa. But Uche Kalu should run for president in 2004. I think he would be an ideal candidate for the Green party. Peace out!

4 out of 5 stars I never used to like reading!.......2001-01-28

I never used to like reading but since i picked up a copy of "The Moon At Noon" my whole world has changed! This book has the ability to send you to a time and place very different from here and now, but also quite similar to what you are used to as far as everyday life goes. This book was a welcome travel companion on my last trip to the Ukraine. Both my significant other and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a deep thirst for knowledge. I only wish i could download it into my Visor so i would always have it with me!

              4 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2000-10-30

A great book that gives good content of white migration into Africa and the repercussions of it. Unlike other books that discuss this very same issue, The Moon at Noon is brief, constant, and the script is simplistic enough for today's young adults to understand and relate to it. Recommended for those households that want to learn about culture.
