Book Description

Here is the one source glass collectors and dealers have been waiting for--an all-in-one resource which identifies over 4,000 patterns of stemware of the twentieth century. Replacements Ltd., the world's largest china, silver, and crystal matching service, has inventoried and compiled these patterns to help everyone identify their favorite patterns, their grandmother's or even their own wedding crystal. The most extensive stemware guide ever published, this is an ideal reference guide for the thousands of glass dealers across the country who search for the many patterns of etched, plain, blown, or molded designs. The large, detailedimage featured for each pattern is either a photo, line drawing, or original company illustration. While not a comprehensive pattern guide on any one manufacturer, it represents a vast majority of some of the most collectible and requested stemware patterns of yesterday and today. This book, despite its large format, is easy to use making it the standard reference in the field. REVIEW: This book, by the owner of the world's largest china, silver, and crystal matching service, showcases over 4,000 twentieth century stemware patterns, making this the most extensive stemware guide ever published. It represents a vast majority of some of the most collectible stemware patterns.

4 out of 5 stars Good could be a little better.......2007-07-18

I think the book is good in the sense it has a lot of pictures even though they are not in color they are still clear enough to make out the pattern. Besides, most stemware is clear anyhow. The stick figure patterns are also helpful for some of the harder to find items and besides they do give a written description as well. I recommend it as a must have. home-of-china

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing guide.......2007-04-24

I thought this would be a great addition to my library as I enjoy stemware and was very disappointed that most of the "images" are just line drawings and there is no history of lines or anything. I couldn't even find my stemware in the listings and I have several old sets that I have bought over the years. Stick with Gene Florence if you want a really good book on identification. Very lackluster!

Lots and lots of phots and makers. Very good even has unknown photos.Worth the money for a glass person

2 out of 5 stars Crystal Stemware Identification Guide Wish List.......2006-03-07

It was dissapointing that the contents of the book is in gray and white while the cover is in color. Very misleading. Although a multitude of patterns were covered many were sketched. All in all it would be difficult to recognise patterns using just this book.

4 out of 5 stars Crystal Stemware.......2005-09-06

Although the authors have done a great job, I felt they could make it better by including a little bit more of the antique european crystal (such as Saint-Louis) and by trying to date the patterns by decades at least(1880-1890, 1920-1930, 1950-1960). Anyway, it is an invaluable source for collectors and crystal buyers.

    1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.......2007-04-23

I am sorry I bought this book. Perhaps the author has an artistic vision which works for her, but these photos of her quilts look very amateurish. The directions are poor. She states she started this method because she had trouble getting her blocks/seams to match. Her solution is to take a row of blocks, add random strips of fabric, then square it up after it is finished. One does not need to spend money on a book to learn how to do this. Please find a book that has good patterns or can teach you something about quilting.

    3 out of 5 stars great ideas...terrible instructions.......2006-11-22

I met the author and admired her quilts several years ago at a showing at a Gallery in Modesto. I am making a second quilt from the book and now I'm remembering why I never used the book after the first time. She has you cut way more fabric than you actually need, AND the instructions are often incomplete so pieces don't fit the way they are illustrated which is very frustrating even for a VERY experienced quilter which I am (which is also possibly why I do most of my own designes now....no worries about following instructions....). I am going to write a note to myself and put it into the book...cut as you go...and don't believe the instructions.....

4 out of 5 stars Still inspiring for beginners.......2004-02-17

I was sorry to see this book had such a low review and wanted to add a stronger plus. It was one of the first quilt books I bought and it got me thinking out of the box. I enjoy it and still go back and look through it for ideas. Now that I know Yvonne Porcella's work better, this book does demonstrate a generally more pallid palette of color but it is a good book for a beginner that would like to explore making irregularly patterned quilts.

    4 out of 5 stars Give a girl a break.......2002-11-27

Great creativity is sometimes born of impatience, and this seems to be the case with Yvonne Porcella, who says she never has made a large quilt using a repeated block because "I do not like the precision required to measure and calculate fabrics to make a large quilt." Instead, she thinks up magical numbering schemes, fiddles with brightly colored strips of fabric, and makes eye-popping quilts out of simple elements. In this book she shares her clever techniques in great detail and with lots of examples. Some reviewers have carped that Porcella departs from her usual bright primary palette in this volume, but it is nowhere written that an artist can't experiment with other styles and appeal from time to time to other color sensibilities. The primary purpose of the book is to teach a highly formalized technique, and the variety of color choices shows that it works as well for country plaids as for high contrast.

    1 out of 5 stars uninspirational.......2002-10-03

Sadly, this book lacks variety in the patterns. It is basicly a one technique book showing several layout and color variations. The biggest dissappointment is the uninspiring color combinations in the pictures. I expected a lot more exciting color play from a fiber artist that has several other books dedicated to the use of color in quilts.

      Book Description

Rizzoli's second monograph on this distinguished New York firm follows Gwathmey Siegel: Buildings and Projects 1982-1992. The sequel presents the exquisite residential work for which the firm is so justifiably renowned--from private apartments in Manhattan to homes in Switzerland and California. Also shown are cultural and institutional works, notably, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and the International Center of Photography, both in New York, and numerous other campus and museum projects across the United States. The volume also covers the firm's recent corporate work, including the David Geffen Foundation Building in Los Angeles.

Whether it's a house in the Hamptons, an addition to a famous museum, or a new building for an Ivy League campus, contemporary architecture doesn't get any more coolly, cleanly serviceable than Gwathmey Siegel, the large firm that since 1965 has executed some of the most high-profile private and institutional commissions in the United States (with a few abroad). Gwathmey Siegel's history of concise, user-friendly innovation is well reflected here, in this comely monograph of 26 residential, corporate, academic and museum/arts-related projects spanning 35 years; per custom, it should be a hernia-inducing 10-pound hardcover, but instead is a near-palmsized paperback that still manages to convey the sweep and scale of GS's work in its excellent full-color photography with succinct annotations by firm founder Charles Gwathmey. Appropriately, the fun kicks off with the now-famous house and nearby studio Gwathmey designed for his parents in the Hamptons' Amagansett in 1965. Its basic principles of several levels, volumes, and niches intricately carved into a basic cube would play out again and again in the firm's work, which always manages to cunningly incorporate all sorts of technical solutions and aesthetic charms into volumes whose outer limits possess the simple, geometric logic of buildings that children have long fashioned from a few wooden squares, rectangles, and cylinders. The Gwathmey Residence and the other Hamptons residences featured here (like the 1972 Cogan and the 1983 de Menil), as well as houses in southern California, Vermont, and Switzerland, collectively illustrate 35 years of palatial postmodern minimalism, a stripped-down, late 20th-century bookend to the rococo wedding cakes commissioned by the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and other assorted robber barons of the century just preceding.

But because GS's residential projects, as diversely striking as they are, continuously manage to look (especially from the outside) like anything but places where people actually live, the book's subsequent sections offer almost a sense of relief--these are the kinds of projects at which the firm excels, and those upon which it has built its considerable reputation: the gleaming, Meier-esque white tiles and columns of its 1987 office building for IBM in Greensboro, North Carolina; an ingenious new set of unapologetically modern innards (1973) jutting out of the august, old stone exterior of Princeton University's Whig Hall, whose original wood interior was destroyed in a fire; an elegantly high-tech Science, Industry and Business Library for New York City (1996); blond wood, luminous marble, and stainless steel fitted inside the 1911 Beaux Arts envelope of the former B. Altman department store; and--perhaps the firm's most high-profile (and controversial) commission to date--the 1992 renovation and addition to Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark Guggenheim Museum, also in New York City--an undertaking that managed to vastly increase the museum's gallery and administrative space and address omissions or weaknesses in the original structure, all while linking it to a discreetly handsome limestone rectilinear addition that deferred not to a gamut of political interests but to Wright's original plans for a proposed annex.

Many other notable projects are included in the book as well, including an array of new buildings for Cornell University and an addition to Harvard's venerable Fogg Museum, not to mention the warm-toned Museum of Contemporary Art (1996) that has redefined downtown Miami, and a renovation/addition for the University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery in Seattle (1997). A complex multivolume, multilevel, multiline configuration that somehow manages remarkably to leave the gallery's charming, original red-brick structure from 1927 as its centerpiece, it is this last entry which serves as a fitting final reminder that no one takes simple shapes and fashions them into something chic, clean, and clever quite as deftly or respectfully as Gwathmey Siegel. --Timothy Murphy

      Book Description

The international residential, commercial, and institutional work that positioned this New York firm among the world's architectural elite is featured in this volume, which takes an unprecedented look at Gwathmey Siegel's contributions over the last 35 years. More than 30 projects are documented in photographs, drawings, and descriptions. From Charles Gwathmey's design and construction of Gwathmey Studio and House to the Levitt Center for University Advancement at the University of Iowa, this is the most complete survey of the firm's work published. It reveals the Gwathmey Siegel design philosophy and certifies why their work, along with that of Frank Gehry, Robert Stern, and Richard Meier, is the most powerful in American architecture.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work in an Absurdly Small Format.......2000-08-15

This monograph documents the firms finest projects over the last 35 years in microsized barely readable format. The work is beautiful but the book is absurdly small. It's an example of the new 50% sized architectural monographs aimed at architects who look at images and do not care to read micro text. Many of the postage stamp sized photographs are not legible. Why include 1"x1" photographs? Why are 2 important buildings on the front and back covers mislabeled? Gwathmey Siegel are fine architects doing high profile projects that are aesthetic and functional. This book is aesthetic without being functional. I am amazed that an established, leader of the architectural profession allowed such impressive work to be published in such a poorly designed book. This book confirms the worst fears about our profession: architects care about aesthetics at the expense of function.

      Book Description

Gwathmey Siegel, the award-winning New York-based firm, is acclaimed for its extraordinary houses as well as its high-profile cultural, corporate, and educational work. In the tradition of the highly successful Gwathmey Siegel: Buildings and Projects (Vols. 1 & 2), Rizzoli now presents Gwathmey Siegel: Apartments.
Gwathmey Siegel has long been the architect of choice for clients who want to combine extravagance with an intellectually rigorous, well-crafted modernism. While the houses for which they are so justly renowned often exceed 20,000 square feet, the apartments they have designed are frequently one-tenth that size. The work, however, does not suffer from this reduction in scale, rather it takes on a stunning intensity-as if the ideas encompassed in the bigger houses are in the apartments compressed into tight, concentrated forms. Expressing an unsurpassed level of detail and craftsmanship, the 17 apartments featured in this monograph document the evolution of the firm's design ethos over 30 years of practice from a minimalist modernism to what has sometimes been described as baroque modernism.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book featuring beautiful work.......2007-03-25

I must preface this review by saying I am biased. It was my great fortune to be the co-designer of the building featured on the cover of this tome.
It was a unique experience to collaborate with the talented architects at Gwathmey Siegel. Their inventiveness, boldness, and underlying respect for timeless qualities of design justifies the breadth of their commissions.
The inclusion of plans, lovely photography and a brief but critical narrative makes this an excellent book for both architects and laypeople.

Why has Amazon included reviews of the De Groote and Miller/Hull books in the Ten Houses series under Gwathmey Siegel? Like Architects, was their intent to do it correctly, but they just ran out of time?

5 out of 5 stars True Northwest Architecture.......2001-02-16

This book represents an extrodianry environmental focus for design. The houses created by the Miller/Hull Partnership display architecture originality combined with a keen knowledge of the northwest. Each house is created in harmony with it's surrounding environment--a beautiful representation of both art and archecture.

Please note the customer review entitled, "Architecture Reference Book," does not reflect the correct designer. The architects represented in this book are David Miller, Bob Hull, Norm Strong, and other very talented designers from the Miller/Hull Partnership.

5 out of 5 stars Architecture Reference Book.......2000-05-24

The book reviews ten houses designed by Christian De Groote which are built in Chile round about 1988 to 1991. All the houses are contemporary and there are good photos of the houses. There is not much explination or description, however this is nor really expected of an Architecture book, since Architecture is more of a view and see experience. I thought that Christian in his designs had many great ideas. Perhaps he is not the most famous designer but I liked his designs very much and hope to incorporate some of the design ideas in the house I am building.

                    Product Description

When was the last time you sat down and read a book that made you want to stand up and cheer? Clif Cleaveland's Healers & Heroes: Ordinary People in Extraordinary Times is a collection of true stories about ordinary men and women who, through courage and fortitude, exemplify what it means to love life. In these 12 accounts of unshakable devotion to hope, bravery, and love, these ordinary people rise to the rank of hero and prove that while the human body can be destroyed, the human spirit cannot be defeated. The underlying message of Healers & Heroes is that the nobility of spirit captured on these pages is still alive today. The author prods us to look anew at the "ordinary" people who surround us on a daily basis. In them, he tells us, you're likely to find your own healers and heroes who define the very essence of humanity and good.
