Cat Owners Vet Handbook.......2007-10-11
I'm not a 'big' book buyer but this one is worth it's weight on my book shelf. It's a good one for most of us that care deeply about our feline friends and need immediate answers concerning their health issues.

A vet at home.......2007-07-14
This is a great book. I have used it many times with my new kittens already. Not just a try to cure it yourself book, but explains things they can catch and helps decide whether a trip to the Dr. is needed. Whenever in doubt always go though to err on the side of caution. I will even add this to my vet tech textbooks, it will be a great help in my classes.
The best reference book.......2007-06-06
If you are doing any kind of cat rescue work THIS is the book you need! It is the best reference book I have come across, it is easy for the lay person to read and has just about every scenario you will come across as a rescuer. This has been my "Bible" for years and this updated version is even better than the last. It is especially helpful with orphaned kittens, telling you how much they should weigh, how much food they need and what you should expect developementally.
I can't recommend this book highly enough--I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!
very helpful........2007-05-07

Funny and unbelievably true!.......2001-06-09
I picked up this book to browse through at an attorney's office while my husband and I were waiting to close on our home loan. Ten minutes is all the time I had to skim through it, however, that was enough to know that I must get this book for 2 family members for Christmas or birthday. It is truly a cat lover's book.
Laugh Out Loud -- NOT!.......2000-05-22
I do love my cats too much but I don't need a non-cat person to tell me that. I couldn't quite put a finger on it at first until I realized the obvoious: Ronnie Sellers is not a cat person. That much I derived from the "about the author" page. He does not even profess to be a cat lover at all. This book is but a compilation of anecdotes from cat lovers from all over. Sellers says the idea of doing this book came from a cat person he met in a book shop. That woman should have been the proper author of this handbook. Jennifer Reinhardt could probably do it being a cat person herself. What remarkable talent! I found her illustrations funnier and more effective than the text that accompanied it. Each illustration captured what every cat owner (or cat owned human) has probably gone through. I give her illustrations five stars. I was thinking of returning this book but I decided to keep it anyway if only for Ms. Reinhardt's hilarious drawings.

A Cat Owner's Neccesity.......2004-01-14
My husband and I have been seraching for a book to help with understanding and caring for our lovable and furry family member. This book is GREAT!!
The chapters on Health and Nutrition are the best I have ever seen. The food recommendations to balance a diet were very helpful to a newbie cat owner. Since our baby dislikes wet food and prefers dry it had been difficult.
My favorite chapter was the health care. We were concerned what we would do if there were a medical emergency. This book gives CPR techniques as well as procedures for snake bites, poison ingestion, and wound care.
All in all I have never regretted the money I spent on this book. Most cat books just provide superficial cutesy stuff that does nothing to help responsible cat lovers to care for their babies. This book has more than overcome this barrier to provide a more in-depth look at cat life. Bravo to the authors.

A beautifully illustrated book that charts the evolution of sundials around the world as shown through photographs of important historical examples from the earliest Neolithic designs stone circles, such as Stonehenge, to the present day.
Customer Reviews:
HIstory, Art, People and Science.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent book for the layman as well as for an accomplished sundial expert. It shows the evolution of humankind's interest in the passage and the marking of time. And if you look on page 123 you will see photographs of Kate Pond's contemporary sun-aligned public sculptures.
Sundials, Ancient and Modern, Useful and Beautiful.......2006-04-19
You are used to seeing a sundial in the middle of a garden, and if you are like me, you look at the shadow, then compare the time to a wrist-borne chronometer, and note that the sundial is off by however many minutes. In _Sundials: History, Art, People, Science_ by Mark Lennox-Boyd I learned that this is at least doubly wrong. The author quotes Hilaire Belloc: "I am a sundial and I make a botch / Of what is done much better by a watch." He complements the wit of the couplet, and shows the errors. Firstly, he points out, sundials tell time perfectly well; they simply measure time differently than watches do, but neither of them is objectively "right". Secondly, sundials are not merely garden ornaments, and only one in this profusely illustrated and colorful book is from that category. The dials shown here are often scientific instruments and elaborate works of art that sometimes do not look like sundials at all. Not only are many styles of sundial illustrated here, but the science and history of making them is summarized; the reader will come away with a much better idea of how the solar system runs from the contemplation of these not-so-humble instruments.
Lennox-Boyd (or actually Sir Mark, since he has been, besides a Patron of the British Sundial Society, a Member of Parliament and a Foreign Office Minister), says that the association of the dial with the garden began in the Renaissance, not because the dials were ornaments, but because teachers of the time often used the garden as a place where lessons of science could be delivered. There are pictures here of artwork and architecture that one would not expect to be sundials at all. The Sundial Bridge across the Sacramento River in California is a suspension bridge, suspended on one side of the river from a huge, slanted support. The support just happens to be slanted at the correct angle to make it a gnomon, and its huge shadow sweeps along the ground beneath. The huge sundial at Jaipur in India has a gnomon that is big enough to walk up, fifty steep stairs. A Dutchman has designed beer glasses that you turn until the sunbeam through a circle on one side of the glass hits the date line on the other side; you can then tell if the time is after 5 p.m., the time when the inventor says the glass ought to be filled. There is a picture of a spherical sundial invented by Thomas Jefferson. The Disney World offices in Florida are "entertainment architecture", and part of the fun is that a central room is shaped like a truncated cone and has gigantic sundials visible on the outside and the inside, with quotations about time on marble plaques from such notables as Albert Einstein and Donald Duck. Sir Mark himself designs sundials, some of which are shown here. The most ambitious is one in Oliveto, Italy, within the stair tower of a house; a system of mirrors sends a sunbeam during different times of the day to different walls of the stairwell, each intricately crisscrossed with lines to read time, date, times of sunrise and sunset, and more.
Sir Mark points out that since we now have clocks accurate to more than one second in fifteen million years, sundials ought to be obsolete, but they are not. There has been a resurgence of interest in them, both in the historical forms and the modern ones which come in strange and undial-like shapes. "There is a particular symbolism in an object that does something helpful but requires no power and performs indefinitely," he writes. He is clearly fascinated with his subject, and this lovely and colorful book conveys the fascination perfectly.

Book Description
This revealing text describes the exciting discovery and deciphering of the 5,000-year-old stone chambers and standing stones of pre-Celtic Ireland. At midwinter sunrise, Martin Brennan and his research partner observed a beam of light shining into the central chamber at Newgrange, illuminating a series of glyphs on the back wall. They went on to observe significant solar and lunar events at other chambers and stone complexes in the Boyne Valley and Loughcrew Mountains. Through a combination of careful observation, analysis of the astronomical alignment of the sites, and personal insight into the meanings of megalithic symbols and carvings, Brennan demonstrates conclusively that the passage mounds and chambers are actually sophisticated calendar devices, and that the abstract wheels, spirals, zigzags, and wavy lines are symbols of solar and lunar timekeeping.

Book Description
What really goes on in a man's mind? How does he perceive the world, and how does that perception differ from a woman's view of reality? And how can knowing what a husband, son, father, or male colleague is really like help a woman succeed in her relationships with the male half of the species? Dr. Kevin Leman gives women an up-close and personal look at how the "other half" thinks, feels, and behaves. Topics include: understanding the male sex drive, understanding the boy your husband once was (and in some ways still is), and what makes a husband fulfilled, working with the male ego, advice for single and divorced women, and building a stronger relationship with your father. Leman says, "This is a hard-hitting book that finally tells it like it is. Half the women who read it probably won't believe it, but the half who take it to heart will have very grateful husbands who will return the love tenfold!"
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly realistic and helpful.......2007-08-05
I read this book to get a better idea of what makes men tick, since I was getting married and was raised in a primarily female family. This book is full of true and helpful information. This book has helped to give me a fulfilling and satisfying marriage. By giving my husband the sex, attention, affection, playfulness, respect, and honest praise that he yearns for, he's given me everything I need and more!
As to the comment the other reviewer made about your husband having two hands of his own... yes, he does, and if you give him a break now and again, maybe he'll use them on you as a completely unselfish treat. If you read any of his other books, you'll notice that he has a sense of humor and great respect, admiration, and love for his wife... there is no disrespect in his jokes. And the part at the ballgame with Moonhead? I love the idea of my husband recognizing that lusting after another woman is cheating and the idea of him having a friend he can admit it to and be held accountable by.
In Reality, This is a Great Book...and We Live in Reality.......2006-08-27
I can't say enough about this book. I am almost finished after having it only 3 days. I am a Christian, and found this book a great guideline on how to deal with issues with my husband. I felt like my husband and I were having the same fight over and over again, with no positive outcome. With Dr. Leman's help, I now see my husband's perspective with deeper insight.
I don't understand some of the previous reviewers. If you already think you know the answers to your problems, why are seeking help from Dr. Leman's book? I think some of the comments were based on stubborn ideas, ideas that didn't want to change. If you are wanting someone to validate your thoughts and be "on your side", do not read this book. This book is to help give you your husband's, father's, and son's perspective...not your own.
Anyone seeking some help (with humor), this book will benefit you.
Kudos, Dr. Leman! Again, a job well done.
The Way Men Are.......2004-12-08
As a pastor who counsels many couples, I have found this book useful to help women face the realities about the male of the species. I have seen marriages rejuvinated in certain instances.
Although the author could have been more tactful, he brings home the real facts of life about men and particularly the importance of frequent sex for men. True, not all men fit Leman's mold, but most do. Of course, men will not always admit to being as Leman describes becasue they fear their wives will reject them.
The genders have to learn to accept one another even if they really cannot understand one another.
This is not a cure all for all marriage problems, but it will help enhance many marriages. If nothing else, women will read a real-life explanation as to how most men work. Whether they believe it or not is another issue.
True Facts from a Condescending Author.......2004-08-14
Mr. Leman may be a good man and he may have some insight into men, but his writing style is ruthlessly condescending. I am in chapter one and doubt I'll keep going.
Whether or not the following is true, this is what it the book has been like for me: it seems as though Mr. Leman is assuming that the women reading this book are stubbornly thinking, "Hah! I know all there is to know about men!" and that he's trying to convince all of us as to how wrong we are. His presumption is appalling; I get the feeling that he feels that we women not only know almost nothing about men, but we are also beligerent in our will to cling to this ignorance! He's guilty of name-dropping (unnecessarily pointing out that James Dobson and Gary Smalley are "good friends" of his), and he just keeps on phrasing his sentences and crafting his arguments in a "There, there, little darling, I know this will shock you, but you must hear the truth" kind of way.
For the practical information (so far), I'd give him a four, maybe, but for condescention I'd rate this a negative ten. It really is that bad. I'm going to look for other books on this topic that aren't so nearly degrading to read.
Leman "SHOULD" not have said that.......2003-11-12
This began as a very eye-opening book--it presented some things I never in a million years realized about my husband. By about mid-book, however, I began to get REALLY TICKED OFF. Yes, it is my duty and honor as a wife to make my husband happy. I don't care what Leman says, however, I do not have to be his sexual slave and perform a sexual revolution in my home on a weekly basis just to please my husband. What offended me the most? Probably when he said in essence, "I know some nights you're really tired and sex is the last thing you want to involve yourself with so give your husband a hand job, you'll only have to lay there and it will feel incredible to him." I'm sorry, but I don't buy into his notion that men must have sex three to five nights a week or they will cheat on their wives. Grow up, be a big boy and get over it!
Then there was the astonishingly cruel diatribe with his wife. Leman was saying women "SHOULD" on their husbands to much and to prove his point he went into this story about his wife Sande and he visiting a restaurant in which he always orders the same thing. She politely said, "You should try something different." And his reply? "Or maybe I should try out a new wife!" COME ON! The poor woman must have felt horrible, but yes, Leman, I'm sure she got your big, egotistical point.
Oh, and let's not forget his joking around with Moonhead about "committing adultery" because he couldn't take his eyes off some chick at a football game. Haha. That was hilarious. His wife must be Mother Theresa.
Yes, I believe him that men NEED sex to feel loved, just as women need affection and caring and sex to feel loved. But unlike his list of "must dos", I refuse to meet my husband at the end of our driveway without any clothes on, I don't think taking naked photos of myself and putting them in his briefcase is necessary, and rather than "exploring ideas outside of my sexual comfort zone" I think I'll do what I feel is right, not what some man's unrealistic fantasies dictate. I can't believe this book--it's clear he feels women are around to please, care for and obey. And that's it. I'm a mother, I have my own career and I have a dynamite sex life, without feeling I need to be my husband's personal sex slave.
So Kevin Leman, I love your views on parenting, daddy's an daughters and raising boys, but I think I'll stick to my own views on sex in my marriage. And as for the hand jobs ... God gave you hands of your own. Have at it!

Book Description
What is consciousness?
Is there really such a thing as free will?
Is there a physiological basis for an eternal soul?
In What Makes You Tick?, Thomas Czerner's elegant and accessible introduction to brain research, you'll encounter the scientists and discoveries that have exponentially increased our knowledge of the brain and its functions, most significantly in the last few years. Here, Czerner has translated the arcane language of scientific journals into a highly readable Baedeker of the brain, outlining all that is known about the modern brain and the amazing promise this understanding holds for the future.
In addition to tracing the vast web of cerebral roadways, Czerner deftly follows the larger historical detective story that stars neurologists and their forebears, from philosophers Descartes and Kant, to twentieth-century polymaths Francis Crick and Edwin Land, to computer scientists, who have found that the brain's parallel circuitry offers an ideal design model for microprocessors.
By shining a light on the darkest recesses of our own minds, What Makes You Tick? illuminates the greatest gifts the world of science bestows, in addition to touching on the ethical dilemmas facing us as we begin to alter ourselves on the cellular level. Above all, What Makes You Tick? will forever change the way you think about thinking.

Clear, practical and entertaining.......2002-06-25
For quite some time I have been searching for a book that explains 'how' the brain works in simple although not simplistic terms. Too many books spend too much time on tangents of debatable psychology or hotly contentious theories currently in vogue. This book hits the nail on the head. It provides enough historical information to put the subject matter in context. It describes enough of the current theories to give the reader an idea of the current state of research. It uses wit and humour in such a way as to make the subject matter easy to relate to. It answers the questions such as 'what exactly happens when we see things' by following the chain of events from the point at which a photon reaches our eye and then provides an understandable, yet scientific / biological / mechanical explanation of the series of events that follow. Significant detail (down to the molecular level) is provided without boring the reader and is also presented in the context of 'the big picture'. Other science writers should read this book and learn from Czerner's writing style. A tasteful blend of biology, chemistry, psychology, philosophy and wit. This book will make you want to read more on the subject. My only disappointment is that Czerner hasn't published more!

What makes you tick?.......2000-12-11
Dr. Czerner brings us up to date about the discoveries and theories laymen need to understand about the brain. The fascinating result is just what he promises, that we can never think the same way again about how the brain thinks. Indeed, there is much more mechanical stuff there than is to be believed. He interweaves a lot of difficult science with a light touch and friendly air. All scientists and science writers need to learn to write like this, taking the jargon out while preserving the mysteries, miracles, and majesty of the brain and the neuro-scientists who have learned so much about it during the past fifty years.
Neuronal electrochemical music explained in words.......2000-12-10
Contrary to conventional wisdown, thousands of new neurons arrive at your frontal lobes every day. Our daily experiences can literally change our mind, rerouting paths which were once believed to be hard-wired. As the author puts it (pg 3), "Sadly, reports of this research are relished almost exclusively by a small community of neuroscientists." And as he quotes (pg 173) Daniel Dennett , "vision requires expectations". A professor of Ophtalmology in San Francisco, his writing is not only clear and vivid, but also his breadth of knowledge and his insights are among the things that makes this book a delight to read. There will be so many fascinating things you will learn from this book that I could hardly recommend it more. Your neuronal paths will not remain the same.
