Customer Reviews:
Very informative book!.......2007-02-08
My wife really enjoyed this book, and found many informative bits of information to help sort out "treasures" from clutter!
Enjoyable to browse, but little real use for collections.......2006-03-30
I liked looking through this book---it was certainly enjoyable to browse, but I can't see it being any real use to anyone interested in collecting. For serious collectors, it would be far too general, attempting to cover many, many areas from Star Wars to Art Deco to lamps to Pez. For non-serious collectors such as myself, it's frustrating, as the tone and advice is aimed obviously at SERIOUS collectors with money to burn. There is barely an item pictured that is priced at a level that one without a good deal of funds could start out buying as a collectible. Also, the book seems to avoid mentioning the buying sources that most beginning buyers would use---lawn sales, thrift stores and ebay, instead focusing on auctions and antique stores and dealers. There is also a heavy British feel to the book. There's a whole section on Dinky Cars, another on Queen Elizabeth II collectibles.
I don't mean to say this is not a well put together and very interesting book. It really is, and I think most even casual collectors will enjoy looking at it, but I don't think it's of much use in really helping anyone decide what to buy, sell or keep!

Product Description
Business school teaches you business theories. Your mother lends you family advice. But, who can give you the real scoop on mixing business and family? A family-business veteran, of course, who has lived through the agony of firing a loved one, the misgivings of family-business succession, the uncertainty of hiring a son-in-law . . . and still believes in family business.
Author Larry Hollar has worked in his family's business since the age of five, from taking out the trash to international sales at the decades-old seed company. Since taking over the reins at his family business, Hollar has simultaneously studied the science of family business management. In
Keep Your Business Close and Your Family Closer, Hollar weaves stories of international business success with hard-earned advice. From grandpa's tried-and-true truisms to academic theories, this book offers something for everyone in the business -- from mail room to board room.
While examining the plus-sides of doing business with your family, this down-to-earth book is also a personal tale of growing up in rural America, traveling the world and succeeding at growth.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-08-12
I saw Mr. Hollar at a conference and he is a very charming guy who has a story to tell. His book enlarges on that and is straightforward, good , easy to read advice for folks involved in family businesses. I bought copies of the book for all four of our children involved in our business.
That's What Juggling Is All About !!.......2007-01-11
"Keep Your Business Close and Your Family Closer" is not only written in a funny, easy to read style, but also puts in straightforward terms complex ideas about the on-going dynamics of family businesses. Hollar's metaphors, experiences and advices are helpful not only for old family members working in the firm, but also for young next generation members who want to learn and reflect about their own careers inside or outside the family business. A book full of ideas that may trigger intense mixed feelings, but that can also be an excellent tool to open communication channels at home!

A Must Read!.......2005-07-18
Keep Your Business Close and Your Family Closer is easily the best family business book I've read in years! It is a must read for anyone serious about improving their family business. I enjoyed the wisdom and practical advice of Larry Hollar's 30+ years of experience and enthusiasm "in the trenches" of his own family business. I've read it twice. It has been one of the most impotant additions that I have made to my library. Respectfully reviewed by Bruce Davis, Fourth Generation Businessman; Eagle Nest, New Mexico
What works for a family business.......2005-06-10
When family businesses work well, they are the strongest competitors in the marketplace. Successful business families have learned to leverage family trust, love and loyalty -- valuable assets that simply aren't available to other enterprises. Larry Hollar tells us why this is so, and what works for him, his family, and their family company that does business in 55 countries.
It's refreshing to read a successful family business story told from the business leader's perspective. Forthright and candid, Hollar tells his story with confidence, sensitivity and good humor. He's candid about the hazards of family business leadership -- the struggles, mistakes and uncertainties.
Family business leaders in search of a wise peer's perspective will value Larry Hollar's book.

This book is very easy to read, informative, graphically pleasing, and concise. There are not a lot of books that focus on so many of the positive aspects of a family business, which is this book's forte.

Customer Reviews:
I was very disappointed.......2003-02-13
What I expected was a step-by-step book that got into the basics of building model aircraft. What I got was a collection of articles, some of them old, from Model Airplane News magazine. The articles are tips, organized by chapter on various topics, like "wing building," "building tools," etc.
While some of the tips were useful, I think the title is misleading. Many of the articles weren't building techniques at all. And I was disappointed after reading it that I still didn't have a good feel as to what it takes to build a quality model airplane.
Its an ok book for some of the tips, but don't buy it expecting a "how-to" book on building a model airplane.
Very good reference for your R/C aircraft library.......2000-08-09
The book is well organized and very easy to follow. The author has included lots of pictures to illustrate the numerous building techniques ranging from general construction (ribs, spars, jigs, tips & tricks, tools) to construction techniques focused on gas and electrical models. I'm a little dissapointed in the black-and-white only pictures but very satisfied with the clarity of the instructions. It's obvious that the author has many years of modeling experience, as I hope to have eventually. I would like to see a new edition with color pictures that feature more great building techniques. In the meantime, this book should be a part of any R/C aircraft modeler's library.
Sweet.......2000-06-01
I have read many books like this but this beats them all! I am just a Beginner but might rank higher once I'm done reading!

Book Description
Attractive international projects with, by and in water.
After decades of being banished from residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the integration of natural water courses into the built environment rainwater management, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquility or drama such as pools or fountains – all these aspects are not only encountering renewed interest among architects and urban planners, but they are also greeted with appreciation by the general public.
This book reveals the wide variety of possibilities for using water as a creative element in the city, in art, in the landscape and architecture. Amongst the works documented are a large new city park in Portland (Oregon), the botanical gardens in New York Queens, the conversion of a former airport in Oslo, the park for a new residential area in Oulu, near the Polar Circle in Finland, or a project for Hangzhon, China.

Book Description
In response to demand from landscape architects and home gardeners, Natural Landscaping returns to print in an updated and expanded second edition. It is unique in its focus on plant communities; it approaches landscape design as the establishment of natural ecosystems, rather than mere planting of specimens. Emphasizing the natural landscapes of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, this book
o reviews landscaping principles and techniques
o introduces native plant species for grasslands, forests, edge areas, and small wetlands
o illustrates how to evaluate a site and plan for visual effect and maintenance
o presents the issues involved in restoring bogs, ponds, and other wetlands
o offers practical advice on reducing chemical use while still combating invasive plants
o addresses social, legal, design, and planting problems often encountered on residential sites
o discusses natural landscaping for public parklands, civic buildings, school grounds, and corporate properties
Customer Reviews:
Essential resource.......2002-10-08
Natural Landscaping is an essential resource for anyone interested in landscaping with native plants. The importance of learning to use native plants is so important as we face continuing droughts in various parts of the country, including here in Williamsburg, VA. The book is so full of information that I find myself going back to it often. Many thanks to the authors for this fine volume.
Cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands.......2002-10-07
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Natural Landscaping: Designing With Native Plant Communities by licensed architect and landscaping authority John Diekelmann and natural plan restoration expert Robert Schuster is a fascinating, "user friendly" instructional guide on basic landscaping principles, as well as cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands and introduce native plant species for wetlands, grasslands, forests, and more. Black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates wonderfully illustrate this meticulous, fact-filled, professional quality, highly recommended "how-to" guide for anyone aspiring to enhance or restore native plant communities.
This is a wonderful resource.......2001-10-26
I have the 1982 edition of this book - I stumbled across it and have been amazed ever since that such a book was written in 1982 before this approach to gardening/landscaping was popular.
It is tailored to the midwest, but the technical solidity and sound design concepts should apply anywhere.

Book Description
IN THE TRADITION OF JAPANESE TOUCH FOR YOUR GARDEN, THE PERFECT BOOK FOR CONTEMPOLATING A ZEN-STYLE GARDEN FOR HOME OR TOWNHOUSE, YARD OR BALCONY.
Japanese gardens are renowned for their serene and peaceful ambiance. The New Zen Garden presents the Japanese garden as it exists today, with all its traditional qualities joined to modern architecture and viewed from a modern perspective.
This book takes the concept introduced in the best-selling Japanese Touch for Your Garden and, focusing on the more contemplative gardens that are drawing greater and greater attention, blends it with a more practical approach.
Lavishly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs and featuring the works of contemporary garden designers and landscape architects, The New Zen Garden begins with a brief introduction of the history of the Japanese garden and its spiritual roots. It then guides the reader through
the basics of garden concepts, layout, and personal needs.
With a focus on small- and medium-size home gardens, author Joseph Cali introduces a visually explicit process in which anyone can conceive their own home garden, whether for a single-family residence or the balcony of an apartment or townhouse. Cali also includes a handful "spotlight sections" that
feature guidance from prominent Japanese garden designers, each of whom steers the reader step-by-step through a specific building technique, including the making of textured clay walls, traditional stone walkways, and stone settings.
The New Zen Garden provides a wealth of information on designing a garden to harmonize with any home or private space. It is a provocative eye-opener both for the serious Japanese garden enthusiast and the weekend gardener.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book!.......2004-10-04
This book is itself a work of art, the best I've ever seen in the field. The photographs convey the quiet, peaceful, beauty of small Zen gardens so well, that it is a joy to look at. Mr. Cali's text clearly introduces and explains both the historical background and the philosophical/aesthetic concepts behind Zen gardens. The traditional techniques to create your own garden space, large or small, are explained clearly enough to give anyone the confidence to create even a tiny oasis of natural peace within their home environment. This is best book on zen gardens to come out in a long time. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Seven years ago, James Raimes and his wife bought a country home on nine acres in upstate New York. Inspired by the natural beauty of the land and a desire to learn how to be a gardener, Raimes found himself obsessed with such questions as why gardeners keep moving plants around, what the names of the lawn grasses are, and how one can impose order in a garden and at the same time make it look natural. What, in fact, defines a garden?
Customer Reviews:
The mind of the gardener.......2006-08-19
What an amazing and enchanting book! So different from the run of the mill "how to". The author shares his plans, dreams, hopes, experiences with the reader. (After completing the chapter on Digging in Clay, I was so exhausted that I needed a lie down to recover.) Please can we have a sequel or at least a blog with photos and maps. I want to see it all.
A vivid memoir of the 'gardening bug' involves all.......2006-07-27
Seven years ago the author and his wife bought a country home on nine acres in upstate New York, calling it 'Ginger' and evoking in him a desire to learn about plants and gardening. Raimes grew up in England, so his instinct in this area was always there: his desire to shape a landscape proved challenging, however, and GARDENING AT GINGER: MY SEVEN-YEAR OBSESSION WITH DESIGNING AND PLANTING A PERSONAL LANDSCAPE reviews his efforts, achievements and failures alike. A vivid memoir of the 'gardening bug' involves all.

A gem.......2006-06-24
The essays and stories that make up Gardening at Ginger are about things like greenness (the color, not the movement), the author's city-born-and-bred wife's reaction to insects that get indoors (not hospitable) and where to place a bench. James Raimes' writing is by turns personable, erudite, witty and earnest, and his book goes a long way toward explaining why gardening, an activity that regularly leaves its practitioners filthy, pooped and bleeding, also makes them so happy.
an earthy meditation.......2006-06-16
Raimes' recounting of his "growing" obsession is subtle, graceful and altogether involving. He includes lots of background from his English childhood, gardening experts he's consulted and absorbed, his sometimes bemused wife who nevertheless stands by his often backbreaking, daylight hour devouring transformation of a landscape into areas of inviting woods, stonework, flower beds, greensward, specimen trees and water. It made me stop and think in a new way about my own gardening and enriched my understanding of what all gardeners do.
A charmer .......2006-06-03
Not only for the gardener, this collection of personal essays draws you right into the writer's life, and his obsession with landscaping the gardens around his second home. His insight into the nature around him--not just the flowers, but the trees, the grass, and the dirt--will give even avid gardeners something new to think about. If his garden is half as beautiful as his writing, then Raimes has done a wonderful job.

Book Description
During the last twenty years, landscape design has attracted increasing attention in the world of architecture and design. This is partly a reflection of the tremendous rise in public respect for the environment and partly due to the appearance of a new set of patrons: business corporations and government bodies. Projects vary from prestigious business centers, city squares, and museums to parks and gardens for recreation. Variety is very much a distinguishing characteristic of the forty case studies included in Designing the New Landscape. They range from urban landscaping constructed almost entirely from hard materials for corporate clients to highly individual private gardens, created with traditional planting. An incisive foreword by the doyen of modern landscape architects, the late Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, complements an authoritative introduction by the author that examines the changing practices of landscaping in the postwar years and relates them to the time-honored values of the western landscape tradition. Each case study is fully illustrated with photographs, plans, and models, making Designing the New Landscape required reading for all architects specializing in landscape design, and a vitally important addition to the literature of landscaping.

Customer Reviews:
Not as comprehensive as I'd like..........2006-05-07
I'm a first-time mom-to-be considering cloth diapering our baby. I find the world of cloth diapering really overwhelming (who knew there were 18 different ways to fold a piece of cloth, and then 24 different accessories that work with each different fold!?). I bought this book becuase I wanted an overview of the options, and a description of what would be necessary to do cloth diapering.
The focus in the book is very heavily on home-washing, which is great, but it tends to neglect other options like diaper services. We intend to use a diaper service, and after reading the book I'm still wondering, for example, what paraphenalia I need to purchase? What is typically supplied by a diaper service? How should I choose one service over another?
The author makes a great case for cloth-diapering, but the book does have a tendency to stray into the irrelevant - there are a number of sections on how to bond with your child while changing, how parents should enjoy every minute with their children, etc. Great information for a baby book, not really necessary for one about diapering!
The resource section is great and I really appreciate the links to a lot of different online sites where I can purchase the pieces for cloth diapering. I would recommend getting this book if you are considering cloth diapering, but I am also going to keep looking for a more comprehensive resource.
An Excellent Book by a Devoted Mother.......2006-02-07
I have very rarely read a book that is written by a mother who shows so much compassion towards children and mothering. This book was extremely helpful in both its practical and philosophical persepctives on mundane issues such as diapering, and deeper issues, such as breast feeding, loving your children and attachment parenting. Truly this is a woman of great conviction and wisdom.
Great starting point for a newbie! (3rd Edition review).......2005-09-14
I found this book to be extremely helpful as a person just entering the world of cloth diapering. I started doing some online research on the DiaperPin and MDC sites and found it to be information overload. It is all so overwhelming - I needed a basic place to start. There are TONS of online resources - but if you are like me - and get a headache when you read too long/staring at the computer screen - you prefer a book you can hold in your hand and read.
This book goes over all of the different types of diapers, diaper covers, soakers, pants, and diaper accessories. It offers a good basic breakdown for someone unaware of what cloth diapering is all about. The costs of each kind of diaper is covered, and compared to disposable diapers. The environmental and health and safety issues relating to diapering are covered. Instructions are given on how to actually diaper a newborn and toddler and how to launder diapers.
I like the gray boxes scattered throughout the book - they give a rundown of the facts just covered in that chapter - sort of like a quick reference. There is also a "make-your-own" section that I found helpful. I am going to try this before I invest any big money into WAHM or diaper company purchases.
The end of the book has a Company and Resource guide that list diaper/cover reviews and Diaper Company reviews. The author does give her opinion throughout the book - based on her experience with her six kids. This doesn't bother me as I think a previous reviewer mentioned being upset by this. All moms have their own opinions (usually very strong ones!) This author is no different.
All in all this is a good starting point for someone new to the diapering world wanting a layout of the basics - I highly recommend it. Although someone who is already "in the know" may find this book too basic and a waste of time. There are Moms out there that REALLY know their stuff when it comes to CDing - this book is not for them. But it is "for me." Now that I have more info - I can go online and research further and not feel like my head is going to explode from too much information! I can weed through the sites and focus on certain areas from the info I have gained from this book.
Not overly impressed........2005-04-27
I received a copy of "Diaper Changes" and found it to be totally biased against mothers like myself who still choose to cloth diaper the (old-fashioned) way meaning folding, pins, and rubber pants. Theresa is overly opinionated regarding her own personal preferences and too quick to put down everything else that she doesn't prefer using in the way of cloth diapering needs. I wouldn't at all recommend the book to anyone.
Great starting point for those considering cloth diapers.......2002-09-23
I purchased this book during pregnancy of my first child. I'd already decided to use cloth diapers and was looking for information to help me make more informed choices. While I still felt a bit overwhelmed after reading the book cover to cover, the book is a must read for familiarizing yourself with the broad spectrum of cloth diapering. There is helpful information on the wide variety of cloth diapers and covers available today, how to care for them, how to use and clean, even how to make your own diapers, etc.
However, I feel that you will still need to spend some time doing your own research and getting opinions from others, such as from an online message board or from the folks that run websites that sell cloth diapers (many of whom are moms with children in cloth diapers). Eveyone's needs are different -- for both the parents and the baby.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that there are even more types of diapers than mentioned in the book and some of the references are out of date.
