1 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed.......2004-02-10

This is a book that has a chapter on the Breed itself. Great Pictures of Bassets. And then it is a general dog Information Book.

I was looking for a Book that would be much more specific about Basset Hounds and not a product catalog.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of Basset photos, short on Basset specifics........2003-02-16

I got the 1995 edition of this when I got my Basset. I enjoyed the MANY photos of Bassets, but was disappointed that most of the book appears to be a generic insert that fits in ANY general dog book complete with lots of advertisements for miscellaneous dog stuff. It looks like there is a fill in the blank form used to create the books where you type in a few breed-specific details and lots of photos and -- presto! -- a new book.

Less than 30 pages (of 224) are specific to Bassets.

This is the first book I bought when I got my Basset Hound named Apple.. and I can say that it has taught me a lot in caring, loving, feeding, understading my Apple... It has all the things that u need to know about Bassets and their needs... their sorroundings... their personal stuffs, from combs, to shampoos, to perfumes, to food, to their living quarters, and most of all in everything... so, guys! go on and buy this book. It will help you understand them more!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work.......1998-06-18

This book is amazing. It is a must for Basset lovers worldwide. It has very nice photography work that is complemented by the detailed text. The author included many helpful ideas for your dog. It teaches how to breed them, how to care for them, and last but not least, how to love them. I would reccomend it to almost anyone who is interested in dogs in general or just Basset Hounds. As I Basset lover,I learned many new facts about my favorite breed, and I'm sure you would achieve the same.

5 out of 5 stars Origami Excellence.......2006-11-16

Origami: The Complete Practical Guide to the Ancient Art of Paperfolding was a very worthwhile purchase. It was helpful getting youngsters started doing interesting paperfolding as well as engaging others with greater knowledge of the craft. Diverse and compelling, the color photographs served a much better format for teaching the folding techniques than the dotted-line instructions of other books.

I used the book working with children to give them coping skills dealing with stress. Successful completion of any of the projects can produce pride and a strong level of satisfaction. The range and progressive complexity of the many projects allows for varying levels of interest and skill, and provides challenges for all participants.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful origami book.......2005-12-08

This super book will please any paperfolder from the beginner who has done his or her basic models through to expert level. Models range from the Tomoko Fuse six piece lizard, the modular brocade ball and modular super complex star shown on the cover through to Tsudo's delightful little simple frog and Adolfo Cerceda's wonderful Peacock with the clever lock to the tail devised by Paul Jackson.

The model instructions are shown in step folding rather than in the Yoshizawa/Randlett diagrammatic style most paperfolders will be used to but there is a superb gallery of models to look at in the beginning pages, a wide range of models to fold and the book itself is beautifully photographed and produced.

This version is the rather large and heavy hardback but there is a paperback available which you should look for if you plan to carry the book around a lot.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece of selection and exposition.......2003-09-03

Every piece I have folded from this book has impressed me. I focused on objects to share with my 5 year old and 2 year old. Each model delighted me with the elegance and simpilicity of its design. The expositions are little masterpieces of economy and clarity. I am used to seeing drawn origami diagrams and was skeptical about the use of photographs. However, the author does a superb job of supplementing the photos with just the right amount, and kind, of verbal explanation. Moreover, the designs have a contemporary and hip look to them. Ever folded a paper hat out of newspaper? Well, here Rick Beech shows you how to fold 5 different paper hats in a series, with the same piece of paper! If I had to use one word to describe the qualities in this book, it would be "clever". Note, the edition I have is called "The Origami Handbook".

5 out of 5 stars The book that got be started.......2003-01-20

This is my first origami book bought sometime in November 2002, which got me interested in Origami. I remember being very impressed with the beautiful color photos. Since I was a new folder then, I could easily understand the photo instructions when I first got it, but now I prefer diagrams. Interesting background information on origami and introduction to some origami celebrities makes this book an enjoyable read. There is a photograph of the author with a large elephant model, which got me interested in folding from large paper (60 cm x 60 cm or more). Models ranges from very simple party trick to impressive modular. The beautiful photographs make me want to fold all. I folded my first elephant from this book, a simple one, but very effective in representing the animal. I often drool over the colorful modular models, especially the Flexagon Firworksï...

5 out of 5 stars The best I've seen.......2003-01-05

I have a number of origami books and this is by far the best. It is well-written, the diagrams are clear, the instructions easy to follow (unlike many other books!) It is even beautiful with great photographs of the work.

I can't recommend it enough.

      Book Description

Natural Enemies: An Introduction to Biological Control gives a thorough grounding in the biological control of arthropods, vertebrates, weeds, and plant pathogens through use of natural enemies. The book is intended for undergraduate students and others wishing to learn the basics of biological control. Ann Hajek discusses the reasons why biological control is used, and describes different use strategies and associated safety issues, as well as how best to integrate biological control with other types of pest management. She goes on to describe the basic biology of the different types of natural enemies, and gives examples of successful biological control programs. Throughout this book the ecological relationships that make control possible are emphasized and the major strategies for the use of different types of natural enemies detailed, with discussions of the specific conditions under which each strategy is successful in controlling pests.

      Book Description

Creeping Bentgrass Management presents a difficult management problem throughout the summer season. This complex dilemma is related to numerous and often interrelated factors such as: extreme air and soil temperatures, drought or excessively wet soils, dense thatch or organic mats, mechanical and other physical stresses, improper management practices, the misuse of chemicals, and other physical stresses. The goal of this useful manual—complete with helpful color photographs—is to give golf course superintendents practical tools to better understand the many stress factors that contribute to the creeping bentgrass decline complex. It will help you pinpoint problems, and implement cultural and chemical solutions to maintain the integrity of your course.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive bentgrass management book available!.......2001-01-21

This is the most comprehensive book dealing with creeping bentgrass management. The author covers all aspects of bentgrass management from disease identification, management and control to the control of annual bluegrass with various growth regulators and chemicals. Unlike other books, however, this one talks about common problems that arise that are mistaken for disease issues and lead to the application of wasted chemicals. If you are a golf course superintendent or a turf student there are two books that you must have; The Turf Compendium and this one. You will not be disappointed.

        Book Description

Undesirable invasive plants are infesting public and private lands and waterways in this country at an alarming rate. Various methods are used to suppress these nonnative weeds, from herbicides to burning to cultivation. Classical biological control-in which selected host-specific, plant-attacking insects, mites, nematodes, and pathogens are introduced from the invasive plant's native lands-provides an additional tool for land managers.

In this book, leading experts review the discipline of biological control of invasive terrestrial and aquatic plants. Topics addressed include ecology, safety testing, nontarget impacts, and the processes of identifying, introducing, distributing, and monitoring biological control agents.

This book also provides information about 39 target plants in the continental United States and 94 agents, including their origin, biology, habitat, impacts, and distribution. The book concludes with information about invasive plants targeted for biological control in the future.

An invaluable reference for land managers, natural resource and weed control specialists, and students of natural resource management, "Biological Control of Invasive Plants in the United States" provides practical, science-based information needed for understanding and using biological control as part of an integrated invasive-plant management strategy.

This volume provides principles and practices for ecologically based weed management in a wide range of temperate and tropical farming systems. The authors describe how tillage and cultivation practices, manipulations of soil conditions, competitive cultivars, crop diversification, grazing livestock, arthropod and microbial biocontrol agents, and other factors can be used to reduce weed germination, growth, competitive ability, reproduction, and dispersal. Special attention is given to the evolutionary challenges that weeds pose and the roles that farmers can play in the development of new weed management strategies.

        Download Description

Concerns over environmental and human health impacts of conventional weed management practices, herbicide resistance in weeds, and rising costs of crop production and protection have led agricultural producers and scientists in many countries to seek strategies that take greater advantage of ecological processes and thereby allow a reduction in herbicide use. This book provides principles and practices for ecologically based weed management in a wide range of temperate and tropical farming systems. After examining weed life histories and processes determining the assembly of weed communities, the authors describe how tillage and cultivation practices, manipulations of soil conditions, competitive cultivars, crop diversification, grazing livestock, arthropod and microbial biocontrol agents, and other factors can be used to reduce weed germination, growth, competitive ability, reproduction, and dispersal. Special attention is given to the evolutionary challenges that weeds pose and the roles that farmers can play in the development of new weed management strategies.

          Book Description

Control of insect pests and weeds by their natural enemies offers a proven, feasible, safe, ecological method to pesticidal control. In this concise and fascinating account, Paul DeBach and David Rosen trace the historical background of biological control and examine in detail some of the most famous examples of the discovery of natural enemies and their implementation as active successful biological controls. The book has been thoroughly updated to incorporate recent studies, projects and developments on all aspects of biological control. Conclusions reached, however, remain the same; more biological control is needed - alone and as the mainstay of integrated pest management programmes - if there is to be a diminished use of toxic chemicals which are more expensive, less effective and most importantly, damaging to the environment. This is a second edition of the highly successful book published in 1974 under the same title.

5 out of 5 stars Parents this is a must read for your sons!.......1998-12-30

Kent Nerburn has a gift of communicating what you would like to share with your son about life but didn't know how. It is easy reading, not intimidating and sends the right messages.

5 out of 5 stars touches quite elouquently a fathers teaching to his son.......1998-10-05

I have been sending a chapter at a time to my son who is now in college. In many ways, the thoughtful and insightful writing by Kent triggered responses that I never would have conferred with my son otherwise.

I found it helpful to write my own thoughts about a particular subject in the margins. I have no idea what my son has thought about these chapters that he receives about every other week. I'd like to think though that it helps him ponder every day life and will be of service in helping judge right from wrong
