Book Description
The first major and most comprehensive synthesis of results from ecological, naturalistic behavioral, comparative psychological and humanoid language research on apes since the classic work, The Great Apes, by Robert M. and Ada Yerkes in 1929. Based on more than 1,360 references from scientific journals, monographs, symposium volumes and other public sources, the book contains a wealth of current information on the taxonomy, ecology, postural and locomotive behavior, natural communications, anmd social behavior of the apes. Topical discussions in the book are organized to show the extent of progress, including the development of new research questions, and the way our views of apes have changed as new information has become available since 1929.

Pretty in Punk:25 Punk, Rock and Goth Knitting Projects.......2007-09-14
This is a great book to get teens into knitting. Just not your mom, grandmothers knitting. Up to date and in-style will make any teenager be busy the "good" way.
Cute book.......2007-09-05
Well, this book is amusing. Pretty in Punk is a good "Step 1 in Darning" book. You're done making scarves, or at least you want something to put ON the scarves. Now here are a bunch of patterns, most can easily be adapted into something else... in fact, this is encouraged. So go and knit yourself a Greek flag hat.
Like others have said, there are too many repeated patterns. It really isn't worth the $20 that most people will pay unless you really like fun coffee table books.
And responding to the "Bum Flap" question: The bum flap was originally seen on PJs and Military uniforms. But in Punk culture it mostly acts as a advertisement for the wearer's favorite band or a political statement. It's pretty much useless, as far as everything goes, but it was a staple in many of the punk scenes, therefore one was necessary to the book.
Great fun.......2007-08-29
This book has simple pattens with lots of attitude. They are quick to make, fun to wear, and the the Mohawk hat certainly attracts attention. I can't make them fast enough for all the twenty somethings that want them. Absolutely worth the price.
This Book Rocks!.......2007-06-25
I love this book. It's beautifully illustrated and fun. The knitted items are hip, fashionable and practical. The directions are easy to follow. I highly recommend this book for any knitter's library.
I love this book. It's a fresh alternative to traditional books........2007-05-24
I love this book. The patterns are simple, but edgy. The knits are inspired by british Couture Punks, Vivienne Westwood & John Galiano (Dior) so the styles are alternative, but still clever and girly (no boys patterns in here except maybe the hats, wrist cuffs or messenger bags). The themes covered are Punk, Mod, Rockabilly, Goth and they are all nicely photographed & fast to knit up. I've already made the miniskirt and I'm making the mohawk hat on the cover. The intarsia graphs are cool too.

Not weird at all!!.......2007-04-15
I was initially discouraged from buying this book after reading the spotlight review above, which proclaimed it to be "the weirdest book ever."
That review couldn't have been more misleading. If you are a beginning/intermediate knitter, I think you will find much to enjoy in this book. I dog-ear pages when I'm interested in a pattern, and I have dog-eared almost every page in this one.
To name a few: the hats, mittens, slippers, change purse, cell phone cozy, skiing headband, shoulder bag, simple sweater (knit from the top down, in the round, no seams!) and daring halter all look fun and eminently wearable.
If anything, this book is better than "Speed Knitting" by the same author, which received more positive reviews.
Great Book for Beginners.......2007-03-22
This purchase was for my Daughter-in-law and she just loves it. I bought one for myself several years ago when I first started knitting and have made some wonderful projects. The company dish cloth is a great one and now I am making a baby blanket with the same pattern (size 11 round needles with 126 stitches at the largest part). It looks great!
This could still be salvaged by the publisher.......2007-02-18
but don't hold your breath. I liked the concept of a book with a variety of good basic patterns in it, as I am a kind of advanced beginner. So I ordered this despite the fact that I knew it lacked come pictures.
But the lack of pictures for the most intriguing-sounding projects is just inexcusable.
So I emailed the publisher, and suggested that they provide a *website* with pictures of the pictureless projects, since presumably the projects were actually knitted, and someone must have a picture or two. The customer service folks emailed me right back that they were sending my suggestion along to the editor in charge, and I mentioned that otherwise I would be adding my voice to the chorus of negative reviews, but I have not received a response.
So I'm joining the chorus. For heaven sake, the bookmark is intended to be a beginner's first project, but instead of showing us the bookmark, they show a book with just the tip of the bookmark sticking out! We know what books look like!! We need to *see* the *knitted bookmark,* you sillies! And it just goes on from there. Plain hat--ok, here's a picture. Amazing sculpted hat? You guess what that might mean. Come on, what were you thinking? They even describe the colors of non-existent projects in non-existent pictures. "Sky-blue blanket." But you have to go outside and look at the sky, I guess, because you won't see it in the pages of the book.
A Few Good Beginner's Patterns But Too Many Problems! :(.......2006-12-10
the concept for this book is fantastic - a knitting book for beginners that provides row by row instructions all written out very clearly with no abbreviations. the photographs are beautiful but it was an immense disappointment to find that out of the 30 projects in the book, 7 of them have absolutely no photograph of what they look like. how could you choose to do a pattern that you have no photograph or even a line drawing diagram of??? especially if you are a beginner (which i was when i bought this book), which this book is geared toward! worse, there are no diagrams for the finished projects at all except one. the one project that does have diagrams for it has no measurements on it. the early chapters in the book are hit and miss with the illustrations for the basic techniques. i agree with the other reviewers in that many of the projects are pointless - the knitted paperweight/rock cozy (can you imagine the dust this will collect?), the simple square (uhhh, it's called a gauge swatch), the beer cozy (yuk - wet, itchy acrylic, just what i want to hold in my hand)... the beginner's projects are good though: the garter stitch bookmark and dishcloth (both useful), and the garter stitch "plain old scarf" which you can choose to make a solid color or striped. these three projects are good to learn on and the instructions could not be more clear. i would not have been able to do them though, had i not had another knitting reference book to show me how to do the knit stitch, cast on, bind off, and all those other good beginner techniques.
I learned to knit from this book..........2005-12-27
This was one of my first knitting books, a birthday present from my husband. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful photography and appealing yarns. Not knowing a thing about knitting, I didn't care about lack of normally essential information such as what gauge was required for the pattern. I dove right in and learned to do a knitted cast on, the knit stitch and purl stitch. I found her instructions very clear and easy to follow. As I grew with my knitting, I quickly outgrew this book. A knitted cast on is only good in some instances, inappropriate for others, this book would never have told me that. It's a great book for beginner inspiration, great photos, an engaging author and fun projects, but most will find it quickly looses its usefulness as you gain experience and begin working with knitting patterns that offer more information.

Book Description
This book provides a means for the accurate identification of over 190 families and 2220 genera of flowering plants cultivated out-of-doors in gardens in north-west Europe and in other geographical regions with a similar climate, including parts of North America. The text is an abridged version of The European Garden Flora, published in six volumes, and consitutes a handy single volume digest that considers families and genera, but not species. A key to all the families is provided and for each of the families, a key to the genera within it. Scientifically rigorous descriptions of families and genera follow, including information on the number of constituent genera or species, and details of geographical distribution. Illustrations of genera from most of the major families are included to aid accurate identification.
Book Description
From the winner of the Michael L. Printz Award and the Carnegie Medal, a work of astonishing intimacy and depth
Using a pillow book as her form, nineteen-year-old Cordelia Kenn sets out to write out her life for her unborn daughter. What emerges is a portrait of an extraordinary girl, who writes frankly of love, sex, poetry, nature, faith, and of herself in the world. Her thoughts range widely: on Shakespeare and breasts, periods and piano playing, friendship and trees, consciousness and sleep, and much more besides. As she writes of William Blacklin, the boy she chooses as her first lover, or Julie, the teacher who encourages her spiritual life, Cordelia maddens, fascinates, and ultimately seduces the reader. This is a character never to be forgotten from a writer at the height of his powers.
Customer Reviews:
Great read for young adults/adults.......2007-08-17
In the beginning, I started the book with no expectations, only to be amazed by the end of it. Not only is this story extremely realistic in the adolescent sense, it also had many other lessons to teach about life in general. It was beautifully written, funny, witty, and I'm glad that I picked this book up, despite its thickness (which may ultimately seem a little intimidating to impatient readers). But read it!! You will not be disappointed...
Beautiful book.......2007-08-13
I bought this book straight out of the book store, mainly because I liked the cover (I'll admit it I'm very shallow when it comes to book covers), description and sheer size. I'm not a fan of light reading.
I honestly didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Getting over the lenghty sexual passages, I discovered a character more real than I'd ever encountered. It was like a book made of my thoughts and emotions. Of course, this might have something to do with the fact I'm a sixteen year old girl. In short I adored it, the prose, everything. The kind of book you can open to any page and be entertained. You really have to digest it, though, if you read it from start to finish.
I cried, I laughed, it was everything a book should be.
This is All.......2007-07-18
"This is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn" is a collection of thoughts and recollections put together by Cordelia Kenn for her unborn daughter. Cordelia relates her experiences, her beliefs, her likes, and her dislikes, touching all subjects. She writes of sex, Shakespeare, love, books, poetry, friendship, food, and spirituality (just to name a few) with a very wise perspective for someone of her age, while narrating events in her life.
It sounds boring (and sometimes it is)--reading somebody else's ramblings about why they like this or that, but it is surprisingly entertaining. Not only does Cordelia ramble on about these things, interrupting the "plot", but she does so for 800 pages! (Now, just imagine the sheer amount of paper, writer's cramp, and pens it would take for Cordelia to handwrite 800 typewritten pages. Aidan Chambers only knows where she found the time.)
Cordelia writes like an extremely intelligent, mature person, but she almost never acts like one. Her actions and the maturity of her writing and thoughts are hardly consistent. Cordelia can be very annoying because she says one thing and does another.
There was a 200 page section in this book that was extremely irritating: it consisted of two different storylines that switched every other page--mid-sentence. I don't understand why Aidan Chambers did that: it was irritating and confusing. If he wanted the two storylines side by side, he could have at least switched back and forth at convenient times.
Also, this book is extremely descriptive about sex and periods. It got quite nasty at some points, and was unnecessary.
While I disagree with most of Cordelia's philosophy, I still enjoyed reading her point of view. If you intend to read this book, read it to the last page or not at all. The ending makes the book.
Wow........2007-04-18
This was an awesome book. Read it. After that having been said,...I am a pretty advanced reader, and am always looking for good books that are interesting and entertaining, and present a good challenge. This is not easy. Also, as I am a speed demon, books that are huge. Adding that, finding my definition of a "good book" is almost impossible. This book, though, meets all the requirements. It is very different in the way it was written (the mother, Cordelia Kenn, is writing to her unborn daughter, writing in the present, and also using her "pillow books", books similar to journals Cordelia wrote in her teenage years, and the entire book is a mixture of the two, and you hardly ever know which is which), and even has one section where you have to read two different stories, or memories, or writings. Whatever you want to call them. The left hand side is not chronological, and has a couple lists, seperate memories, that kind of random thing. The right side is a chronological sequence of events in her life, as are most books. This is All has a lot about how she loves Will, but it is not how she adores him, or her huge crush on him. It is her relationship with him, and how it grows and progresses, and is nothing like the stories involving a girl's crush on a popular boy, and how hopelessly obsessed she is. Will is in the book a lot simply because he is a huge part of her life.
Also, this book fascinated me and surprised me with many very interesting little sections about things in life, that got me thinking. For instance, sleep. I can't explain it as well as the author, but it was very thought provoking and presented an entirely new view. The book is, overall, wonderful. I loved it. However, if you are not an advanced reader or an adult, I recommend you do not read this book. It is for older readers, because of the topics and the ideas. You will not understand it, and will walk away confused and thinking it is a horrible book. But when you are a better reader, definitley check this book out. It's great. I loved it, and the author showed a lot of ingenuity. I would highly recommend reading this sometime in your life!
Utterly realistic.......2007-01-22
There are two complaints people seem to make about this book - that it is too long, and that they don't believe that what happens to Cordelia and her reactions are realistic.
To the first, if you are a lazy reader, sure, it is a very long book, but everything in it is there for a reason, is an essential part of what makes Cordelia a completely real person.
Which is my answer to the second complaint - Cordelia is completely real. If you can't realate to Cordelia I'm sorry you were never in love at a young age. I can only imagine that those critics have lost all touch with who they were as teenagers and simply can't temember what it was like. I find it remarkable that a seventy year old man could write such an incredibly accurate book about a teenage girl. This book runs eerily parallel to my life at that age, and I reacted much the same, even down to having an affair with an older man, so I can only repeat: these things happen and young girls do feel like Cordelia.
This book is amazing.

A BLESSING TO EXPECTANT MOTHER'S.......2001-03-31
This book was a blessing, it helped me to understand why I was having so many strong feelings, and how to deal with them. It gave me suggestions of who I could talk to that would understand and be willing to help me. As so many of you who have had baby's know that being pregnant is a very special time that is filled with joy and sadness, depending upon our past, present, future, our partner, and our caregivers; this book really helps give an outline to understanding how to work through the sadness and fear and revel in the joy.

Save your money and go to the Y!.......2004-06-09
This is written by someone who has obviously never had a child of her own. How does someone who has never carried a child expect to tell the rest of us how to exercise and "stay beautiful"? I'd stay beautiful, too, if I had adopted all my children. :)
