Book was not put together very good. It was also very boring in alot of areas. The middle section that has pictures...fell completely out of the book and into my hands. Very bad binding job and cheaply made book. Would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Jewelry Book.......2006-07-22

This book will educate you concerning the history of jewelry from the 1840's through the 1950's. Excellent history, pictures, price guides for the collector and the researcher. Contains not only black/white and color photos, but hallmarks, dating clues, artists marks, glossary and much much more. Invaluable book and one of the most used in my jewelry library.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Information.......2004-11-18

You might say I'm a novice when it comes to vintage jewelry. I learn as I go and every book I buy has some tidbit of excellent information. My feeling is that one can never have too many books as they become our reference guides. Jeanenne Bell did an excellent job and I refer to this book regularly. I'm glad I bought it.

    Book Description

Along rivers in Bali, small groups of farmers meet regularly in water temples to manage their irrigation systems. They have done so for a thousand years. Over the centuries, water temple networks have expanded to manage the ecology of rice terraces at the scale of whole watersheds. Although each group focuses on its own problems, a global solution nonetheless emerges that optimizes irrigation flows for everyone. Did someone have to design Bali's water temple networks, or could they have emerged from a self-organizing process?

Perfect Order--a groundbreaking work at the nexus of conservation, complexity theory, and anthropology--describes a series of fieldwork projects triggered by this question, ranging from the archaeology of the water temples to their ecological functions and their place in Balinese cosmology. Stephen Lansing shows that the temple networks are fragile, vulnerable to the cross-currents produced by competition among male descent groups. But the feminine rites of water temples mirror the farmers' awareness that when they act in unison, small miracles of order occur regularly, as the jewel-like perfection of the rice terraces produces general prosperity. Much of this is barely visible from within the horizons of Western social theory.

The fruit of a decade of multidisciplinary research, this absorbing book shows that even as researchers probe the foundations of cooperation in the water temple networks, the very existence of the traditional farming techniques they represent is threatened by large-scale development projects.

    Book Description

In Bali, as in many parts of the world, rice is more than just a staple food-rice is life!In Bali, life revolves around the planting and harvesting of rice. While eels slip through the mud and dragonflies flutter overhead, farmers plant seedlings in the wet rice field, or 'saweh.' Soon each plant is crowned with flowers, and tiny green kernels appear. Rain nourishes the kernels, which grow plump and sweet. The green plants turn golden and ripe, and everyone helps harvest the grain. When the harvest is finished, the farmers give thanks to the goddess of rice for a successful crop. From planting the seeds to harvesting the ripe grain, this beautiful, poetic book tells the story of rice and of the Balinese people, for whom rice is life.

Children are the asterisks: points of emphasis in the tragedy of the tsunamis. We need to let little children lead us . . . to re-visit our meagre store of knowledge about south-east Asia where the suffering has been profound.

Rice is Life is Rita Golden Gelman's book (2000) , primarily about Bali in the chain of islands called Indonesia. Rice is their sustenance and it grows in wet rice fields called "sawahs." The author's ten 'stanzas' introduce us to the importance of rice, the food at most meals. This simplified saga will give readers of every age a better understanding of how involved is the growth & harvesting of a single food.

Yangsook Choi is a native Korean who studied art in NYC. Her appealing illustrations show the nurture of this most important grain, and the animals - - from ants & eels & bats to marauding birds aand mice, and the playful ducks that come to eat the "leavings." I particularly liked the threshing picture & the conical stacks of grain. Paintings of the sawahs show the broad view before planting, and at other stages.

I do recommend as a companion book: Hot, Sour, Salty, Sweet (# 1579651143), a huge gorgeous volume with recipes from all along the 3000 miles of the Mekong River between Tibet & Vietnam! Show some of the wonderful photographs to children. The authors call rice "THE ESSENTIAL FOOD THAT ANCHORS LIFE."(J. Alford & N. Duguid also compiled "Seduction of Rice," another prize-winning cookbook that presents a panorama of travel, culture & recipes.)

Everywhere in south-east Asia RICE is that "essential" food but now it is likely to be delivered from US Army helicopters which have, ironically, become winged angels to so many since the December 2004 tsunamis. All over the world prayers are now offered for these people and the reconstruction of their "rice islands."

Reviewer mcHAIKU recommends that we share "Rice is Life" & our concerns about other people with the children in our lives.

        Description:
This article presents qualitative and quantitative research findings on food habits of pregnant Indonesian women in relation to the economic crisis that arose in 1997. Between 1996 and 1998, dietary intakes were estimated for 450 pregnant women in Central Java. Between January and June 1999, four focus group discussions, 16 in-depth interviews and four non-participant observations were held with women, two in-depth interviews were held with traditional birth attendants, and four with midwives. Women were categorized as urban or rural, rich or poor, and according to rice field ownership. The women reported that before the crisis they bought more foods and cooked more meals and snacks. During the crisis, cooking methods became simpler and cooking tasty foods was more important than cooking nutritious foods. This involved using plenty of spices and cooking oil, but reducing the use of expensive nutritious foods. The herbal drink jamu was drunk by 15% of pregnant women; its consumption was lower during than before the economic crisis. Twenty-six percent of the women avoided certain foods due to food taboos, and most of these women avoided beneficial foods; this phenomenon decreased during the crisis among the rich and the rural, poor, landless women. In spite of increased prices for rice, women did not decrease their rice consumption during the crisis because rice was believed to have the highest value for survival, to provide strength during pregnancy and delivery, and to be easier to store and cook. Finally, children and husbands had highest priority in being served food, and women were the last to eat.

          5 out of 5 stars Shaping world-changers.......2005-11-15

The truth is out-parents of teens are not just chauffeurs and check-signers. We're in a vital role of shaping world-changers. If you doubt it, and are just enduring the years of teen-hood, rush and get this book. My twosome have survived teens and are at college, but some of Savage and Farrel's ideas helped me better understand my dwindling mother role. For those in the beginning or middle of the teen-years-frame, this is a practical, readable, and REAL guide to the hardest parenting you'll ever face. Buy two copies-one for you, one to share with other parents of teens.

          5 out of 5 stars Got Teens?.......2005-08-25

This is an excellent book for moms of teens or tweens. It is easy to read, you feel like you are sitting across the table with Jill and Pam (co-authors), having a cup of coffee and talking about their kids and yours. There is a lot of practical advice and a lot of additional resources listed, such as web sites and other organizations where you can go for info. As a mom of an almost 15 year old daughter and a 12 year old son, I needed this book. I will definitely recommend it to my friends and keep it hand for future reference.

Jeremy Aames is the perfect guy for Jessica Wakefield.  He's cute, smart--and he doesn't know any of the terrible rumors that are flying around about her.  But will she be able to keep this great new guy from meeting anyone she's ever known before and hearing the horrible stories? Doubtful.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars I've Got A Secret.......2005-03-03

Not to be mean, but the review before mine-the one about Jessica being a crazed murderer- is totally WRONG! Jess is not a crazed murderer, as anyone who's ever even HEARD of Sweet Valley would know. I don't know what is up with all these people making up random plots to stories in their reviews (I have heard Liz and Jess getting married and Tia moving to a farm and having 7 kids-oh, come ON!) but this has got to stop. It is totally stupid and the people doing it need to actualy READ the book before writing stupid alternate-universe plots to the book! Oh, and no more spoilers in the reviews unless you are putting the word spoiler in your review. It's really anoying and ruins the whole point of reading the book.
Well, now that I've ranted ( :D ) on to the book. Yes, well Jessica is now basically a social outcast thanks to the queen you-know-what, Melissa Fox. In this book, she covers for Liz at one of her HOJ (House Of Java) shifts. There she meets Jeremy, Elizabeth's cute co-worker. She finds that he is able to make her laugh and help her forget about what is happening to her. She starts to like him, but she doesn't want him to find out that she is knowm as the class slut in school. Will Melissa ruin everything again?

          1 out of 5 stars Psycho Jessica.......2003-12-14

All right Jessica turns split personality because of Melissa's taunting. In her alter ego she is this crazed mass murderer and chops Melissa, Will, Cherie, and Gina into cocktail franks. Then Lila and Amy run for their lives to Norway. Finally Jeremy is fallin in love with the real Jessica. But she's scared he'll find out she's a murderer. Okay.

5 out of 5 stars Fourth Books in the SVH Senior Year Series.......2002-06-03

In "I've Got a Secret", a new character is added to the storyline: Jeremy Aames, a Big Mesa football player and your typical "good guy". He and Jessica Wakefield inevitably hookup when Jessica and Elizabeth trade places at each other's respective work sites so each twin can have some time off--Liz to her Silver Chair concert with Conner, Tia, Maria, Angel, Andy, and Evan (Liz, of course, is still after Conner, but now so is heartbroken Maria); and Jess to her dreaded football game between Big Mesa and Sweet Valley. Obviously, with any identity switch the twins make comes disaster--and it looks like one or both of them will get fired from their jobs at House of Java and Healthy.

"I've Got a Secret" is a great fourth addition to the Sweet Valley High: Senior Year series. It was worth seeing Jessica get a little slack--having Melissa Fox get in some trouble, and Jess finally meeting a guy who was single and didn't have a jealous, psychotic girlfriend lurking nearby.

          5 out of 5 stars YES!!!.......2002-04-30

I hope you're as excited as I am that Conner and Liz *finally* kiss in this one (page 176). :)

Here are some other big events:

-Tia stands up for Liz (page 26).
-Will stands up for Tia (page 32).
-Jess meets a new guy (page 85).
-The cheerleading captain is announced (page 147).
-Will decides to break up with Melissa (page 161).
-Will decides not to break up with Melissa (page 167).
          -Jessica gets fired (page 172).

          Enjoy!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Teen drama cover and back should not put you off this story!.......2002-01-15

Yes it's a teen drama but it is still pretty good.Although this cover they are showing you is not the original and it looks hideous!!
Basically these are some of the storylines included:
Jessica:Does a twin switch with Elizabeth and ends up meeting Jeremy who she really likes but is scared to go out with him because she thinks he find out about her reputation and ditch her.(yeah, right!)
Melissa:Really wants to be cheerleading squad captain.Doesn't get it and is gutted(this happens at the end of the book and is continued in the start of the next one.)
Jeremy:How he worries about lying to his friends and Jessica.
Tia:Hilarous part when she bashes Melissa because of what she did to Jessica in So Cool(no 3)
Will:Finally realising he feels suffocated by the manipulative ball and chain.Ditches her twice in the book.Hurrah!
Elizabeth:On a mission to kiss Conner.Pathetic as it sounds.
Though it is pretty funny when she gets dumped in the pool.
Maria:Trying to get Conner back. Not suceeding very well.
          I hope I didn't spoil any storylines.

I quite like this book. The parts in between chapters are good as you can really get into the way a character is thinking.I like the change of characters but it makes me wonder how they're going to fix everything up for university.I think they've started doing that because Megan liking Todd has brought him back into the story and Enid is already becoming distant so it doesn't matter about her storyline.
Although they will have to mention Winston,Lila,Todd and Enid more in the later books won't they because of Sweet valley university?
This review is to let you choose if this will be your cup of tea and hopefully it will help you make a decision on whether or not you want to read it.
          Happy reading:)

            Book Description

As in large corporations and small companies, the political systems in democratic countries are based on free market principles. The rapid development of democracy and political freedoms has created new and sophisticated psychology-based methods of influencing the way voters choose. A Cross-Cultural Theory of Voter Behavior uses advanced empirical testing to determine whether the behavior of voters in established and emerging democracies around the world is predictable. The results of the testing suggest the theory is a ground-breaking cross-cultural model with theoretical and strategic global implications. This unique book examines the many facets of political marketing and its direct relationship with the voter.
