Excellent book for those who plan to have a cat!.......2001-06-29

This book gives an excellent overview about cat behaviour and care. It is very direct and not complicated. However I did not give 5 stars because I wish they would have detailed more about feline diseases such as FIV and leukemia. For those who already have cats (like me) the book makes clear certain attitudes that we all know such as lots of sleeping, hissing, feline intelligence, the way they show their love and so on.

On the other side, if you plan to get a cat/kitten from your shelter or any other place have this book first, it has an excellent section on how to choose the right cat. And also a good section why you should not declaw your cat and all the care you will have with your feline companion.

After owning my first cat, I decided to read about cats. I found "Wild Discovery Guide to your Cat" very helpful in understanding more about my cat. I discovered why my cat behaves the way he behaves and how to treat him if he becomes sick. This book made me understand my cat a lot better and to be able to make a better home for him. The book ranged from topics on the different types of cats to how to help a cat adjust to a new home. I especially enjoyed the sections on what to do when a cat is sick or injured, particularly what signs to look for in a sick cat. Of course, the pictures of the various cats were great and helpful in understanding various situations with cats. Overall, I was very impressed with the book. I plan on purchasing the book for friends who are cat lovers.

The book, in handbook format, covers warm and cool season grass diseases, most of which have pictures. About the first ten pages are dedicated to sharing causes and diagnostic procedures. Another short section covers developing disease control strategies.

The book is good for all people...topics covered apply not only to athletic fields(and golf courses), but also to the average home user. After reading the maintenance section, most people will learn that they over-fertilize and over-water.

Topics also include tufrgass diseases, weed control, and managing insect problems.

Good turf management book.......2002-04-01

This book provides a compehensive discussion of turfgrasses and their management. There are plenty of pictures showing grasses, weeds, and diseases suffered. The pictures are all very clear and close up so you know what you are looking at. There is also plenty of info on how the manage(fertilize, mow, etc.) grasses. I actually used this book in a class taught by the author(Dr. Richard Duble); while I used this as a college textbook, this book does not read like a college textbook so it should appeal to a wider audience.

Description:
A diverse soil microbial community is an important measure of sustainable land use. Turfgrasses are usually managed as a monostand, which may result in reduced soil microbial diversity. However, there is little information on the structure and diversity of soil microorganisms in managed turfgrass systems. We examined the soil microbial community in a turfgrass chronosequence (i.e., 1, 6, 23 and 95 years), established from native pines, to address (1) the degree to which microbial diversity is achieved and maintained in turfgrass soils and (2) the relative importance of turfgrass management versus land-use change (i.e., native pines to turfgrass) in structuring the soil microbial community. Soil microbial communities were fingerprinted using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition, and also by the pattern of sole C source utilization (i.e., community-level physiological profiles, CLPP). The relative diversities of soil microbial communities as a function of land use and turfgrass ages were compared using the Shannon index. Multivariate analysis was used to detail variations in soil microbial communities. Despite the differences in land use and turfgrass age, microbial biodiversity was generally similar for the various soils, with the exception that diversity was lower in soils taken from 5 to 15cm depth of the two youngest turfgrass systems. This reduction was correlated with low soil C, and suggests that soil organic matter (OM) is a primary determinant of microbial community diversity. Both CLPP- and PLFA-based principal component analyses (PCA) revealed distinct groupings of soil microbial communities based on land use but not on turfgrass age. There was a preferential use of phenolic compounds and carboxylic acids by the microbial community in native pine soils, whereas carbohydrates were the preferred C source for microbial communities in turfgrass soils. This difference in catabolic function was mirrored by a compositional change of phospholipid fatty acids. Cluster analysis of community structure indicated that microbial communities in older turfgrass systems (23 and 95 years old) diverged from younger systems (1 and 6 years old), implying some effect of management on composition and structure of the soil microbial community. Our study concludes that a diverse soil microbial community was achieved and maintained in turfgrass systems, and that shifts in soil microbial community structure were attributed primarily to the change of land use rather than the length of turfgrass management.

I bought this because my family had fallen in such a routine rut, same old converstion during dinner we had started turning on the tv, and this is something i never wanted for us. When i opened the cards and we started to use them everything changed!! no more tv and we have actually learned alot about eachother!! i would HIGHLY recommed this product, i also purchaded the table talk for kids, again i highly recommed, you do learn alot about eaccother and they make you think about things that you probably hadnt thought to even ask!!

I had read about this in a magazine. The box is filled with info and questions to get the conversation rolling at the dinner table...and it does just that. Geared toward older teens/adults. What a great idea!

Thought Provoking.......2006-10-24

We've had Food for Talk for over a year and I just came on to buy it as a gift for friends. Our kids ages 12,10 and 5 may be a little on the young side for some of the topics, but we pick and choose (and our little one usually doesn't participate much).
We eat dinner as a family almost every night, yet somehow don't have very many meaningful conversations. The topics give parents an opportunity to talk about things that often don't come up in normal conversation, as well as learn about what is going on in our kids' minds. We don't pull out the box very often, but everyone enjoys it when we do.

Even for teenage boys!.......2005-12-27

Excellent product. My teenage boys laugh when I put it on the table and pull out a card. They usually say something as a joke first, we all laugh and then the conversation starts almost magically.
