the BEST field guide for North Pacific cetaceans.......2001-02-08

This manual contains the technical information necessary for distinguishing similar species at sea. Numerous black-and-white photos show all important field characteristics. Detailed analysis of the field characteristics separating the various large Balaenopterids is especially useful. Species which have been recorded as accidental are also included. Updating information about the presence of Hyperoodon (or Indopacetus??) in Pacific waters near the equator would be useful, although photos of 'unidentified' Ziphidae are included. This is the only book I take out with me for field cruises.

An useful guide.......2001-01-24

This is an excellent book for those who are looking for a guide for whalewatching. But it is more technical than the average, which is good in some cases. FOr me it was very useful when going to sea, because I wanted detailed information, but other people look only for pictures. Which is the only problem here, because they are all in black and white.

Pretty good but EXPENSIVE.......2006-04-05

I loved each of the patterns in this book and wanted to find the yarn to make at least one. The problem is that you have to be a millionaire to be able to afford the yarn specified in the book. I will probably eventually make something out of the book but I will have to make a few adaptions with the yarn.

The vivid photographs clearly portray finished works of handcrafted art. The various knitting project instructions are precise and enhanced with helpful tips, and are especially recommended for those who have had prior experience knitting and are already familiar with knitting terminology and basic stitches.

Don't waste your yarn.......2002-09-27

As usual, these authors use the most expensive, luxurious yarns, but this time the results are not even worth a second look. Don't bother with this book. Unless your tastes are really wierd (or you are a University of Washington Husky fan) you won't want to make any of these murky, overwrought "concept" afghans. It's a pretty book, and maybe the recipes are OK. (Yes, recipes: "Salmon in Parchment with Wasabi Cream"!) As with their other books, though, the authors seem more interested in showcasing themselves, their store, their friends, and their lifestyle, than creating appealing designs. I've been more impressed with Herrschner's catalog.

Simply Marvelous.......2002-09-19

Well, the girls from Tricoter have done it again!! Their latest effort, a collection of fabulous throws and pillows is a MUST for knitters. I love to make afghans and am always looking for more patterns. This book has an array of designs - definitely something for everyone. But the very elegant throws, done in exquisite fibers along with silk ribbon trim are unbelievable in their beauty.

This book is not only about comfort throws, but the authors have included some wonderful comfort food receipies that 'add to the flavor' of the whole creative experience.

This book is beautifully done - and once again, the artistic talents of Linden Phelps and Beryl Hiatt provide us with more fabulous and wonderful designs.

Book lovers will want to buy this book simply because it is such a beautiful little book. It's nicely laid out at the perfect size for a little book, printed on slick paper and has dozens and dozens of top quality photographs.

I am not a lawn or gardening expert, but this little book seems to me to be chock full of good information. The section on ground covers other than grass, such as bulbs, perenials, and bushes is particularly good for such a short book. In addition, there are scores of tips and techniques for everthing from filling in low spots in your lawn to raking and aerating to planting bulbs under your lawn and dividing and propagating bulbs and other plants.

There are deficiencies. In particular, there is no discussion of soil PH, and the coverage of grass species is poor. A page on each of these topics would improve the book a great deal. A simple chart of grass species and their characteristics would be a great help.

I would characterize this as an "idea" book. You will get a lot of useful information about how to care for your grounds, but you will need to supplement this book with another for really comprehensive coverage of lawn care. Try "Lawn Care for Dummies."

More important, you will get good ideas about how to make your lawn and gardens stand out. In this regard, the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

Philosopher and dirt-gardener Lacy says this was to be two chapters in a larger book, but these two plant families ran away with him. He urges growing plants on the upper and lowest planes as well as the usual 1 - 5-foot ones. In his elegant prose he tells benefits and drawbacks of various ones, including a chapter "Beautiful Thugs" of things that run wild that entice him, nevertheless. Sumptious photos by frequent book-writing partner Carolyn Woodyard.

Excellent primer.......2006-10-01

This is an excellent primer on behavior modification--that is, rewarding a child for his or her good choices and withholding privileges for lack of compliance with basic family requirements. It is, as the previous reviewer suggested, not just for families with "troubled" children.

The book was suggested to us many years ago, and although it is itself more than 30 years old, the lessons here are timeless. As our source noted when referring us to this text, it should be required reading for every parent, and prospective parent.

In addition to outlining behavior modification techniques, the book provides excellent suggestions as to how to otherwise "reinforce" the good behaviors and discourage the bad ones.

This is a great book for all parents........1999-01-16

FAMILIES has been around a long time, but it is still the book I us most when working with troubled families. Based upon social learning theory FAMILIES presents a clear, consise explaination of how problem behaviors are created, and how they can be extinguished. Written in simple language, any literate parent can understand the simple but profound lessons contained in this book. During my 20 years as a social worker and educatior I have purchased numerous copies of this book and handed them out to parents who are struggling with their children. I use FAMILIES primarily to help parents who are having problems with their children, but I recommend it to all parents. In a kind way the book illustrates how troubled children are sometimes created by parental mistakes.
