A book which stays forever in the heart of an addict child and for parents.......2005-08-05
My wayward child at age 13 gave this book to me for a Christmas present. I then knew who he was and is for the first time. As he has matured into adulthood 20 years later, this book is still one of his favorites and mine, too. There are many of us in the world who are too gentle to live among the wolves.
appropriate for 2004.......2004-02-02

i was drawn to this book, for an unknown reason....i picked it up, and bought it for 50 cents at a thrift shop. i did't read it right away... i saved it....and then the day came, i was real down; i read this book, and realized that it soounded like every single word that had been running through my mind....put together in a beautiful masterpiece, that i couldn't have said better. it helped me get through the day, so i could live another one. i thank james kavanaugh, for writeing this book, and helping me realize there are others like me, out there, in this world with "IBM eyes".
Book Description
Three Among the Wolves is a highly readable true-life adventure tale combined with a fascinating natural history of the wolf. Helen and Bill Thayer, accompanied by their part-wolf, mostly Husky dog, Charlie, set out on foot to live among wild wolf packs — first in the Canadian Yukon and then in the Arctic. They eventually set up camp within 100 feet of a wolf den, and are greeted with apprehension at first. They establish trust over time, because the wolves accept Charlie as the alpha male of the newly arrived "pack."
The Thayers discover the complexities of wolf family structure, including how pups are reared and how the injured are tenderly cared for. They view the intricacies of the hunt firsthand — how ravens direct wolves to prey in exchange for carrion — as well as the wolves' finely honed survival skills and engaging playfulness. Readers observe the ways Helen and Bill model pack behavior and how they address an unforeseen event: the Arctic wolves attempt to lure Charlie to join them.

A Fantastic Read.......2007-07-16
This book was incredible, and is definantly my favorite non-fiction book. This book is great for anyone who has a slight intrest in nature. It helps if you think wolves are awesome as I do.
Wolves are beautiful creatures; this is a beautiful book........2006-02-28
This book is my second literary experience with Helen Thayer and her dog Charlie following her 2002 book "Polar Dream," in which the pair join together as Ms. Thayer became the first woman (and oldest person at 50) to walk and ski solo (not counting Charlie) to the Magnetic North Pole. In this adventure her husband Bill joins the pair as they spend a year living with wolves in the wild above the Arctic Circle. It's easy to see why the National Geographic Society/National Public Radio has named Ms. Thayer one of the great explorers of the 20th Century. Her stamina and perseverance are phenomenal. The trio infiltrates the Richardson Mountains in Canada's Yukon Territory in search of the greatest villains in all of children's literature. After struggling through most difficult terrains, they come upon a family of wolves and spend months living in a tent within the animals' sight studying the social interplay of these beasts. Completing this phase of their adventure, they sadly leave this family and trek further north into the shifting and dangerous ice of Beaufort Sea to discover the wintertime interplay between wolves and polar bears, considered by many to be the most dangerous of all wild animals. After this near-death adventure, they ski back to the Mackenzie Delta and set up housekeeping next to another group of wolves. The hardships and danger the three faces on a daily basis are amazing to contemplate. The payoff from this book is two-fold. First, the scientific data discovered for the first time. But maybe more importantly is the realization that these creatures are truly magnificent and caring individuals, and anyone who reads this book with an open mind will forever despise hunters who slaughter entire packs by shooting them from low flying airplanes. Ms. Thayer makes it crystal clear that wolves deserve to be part of the world community. There is a bit of repetition in the book. I only need to be told once that the northern lights are called aurora borealis or that animals burrow under the snow were it is a few degrees warmer than above. But that's nit picking. There is also repetition in the telling of their studies, but that captures the flavor of their scientific existence, so is acceptable. To enhance this telling, dozens of pictures taken during this adventure are sprinkled throughout. All outdoorsmen, naturalists, and animal lovers will treasure this book.
Remarkable----Page Turner.......2004-06-03
A true story of two people, their wolf-dog and their amazing adventures with wild wolves in Canada's far north tundra and frozen ocean.
Helen Thayer, a recipient of many awards and honored by the White House, is a veteran world wide explorer over many years. She and her husband explore the world's remote places seeking material to add to their highly successful educational programs which I and fellow educators nationwide use in classrooms.
Her writing and lectures have inspired people of all ages in many countries. I had the pleasure of meeting this dynamic 66 year old, five feet two inch woman after she spoke at a national corporate convention in Florida.
This is a true life experience of living among wild wolf packs in which Charlie, her Inuit dog who once saved her life from a polar bear attack, is the story's star. Just as POLAR DREAM was, this new book is well written with vivid description that takes you on this remarkable journey. This very different approach to wolf study is a welcome addition to our knowledge of these animals. We see the close relationship of many species of animals sharing wild wolf habitat, and at times depending on each other.
Her first book, POLAR DREAM, tells of her adventure with Charlie when she became the first woman to walk alone pulling her own sled without dog teams or snowmobiles to the Magnetic North Pole.
This exciting story and THREE AMONG THE WOLVES are on the same informative, page turning level. The observation of wild wolf family life, their ability to adjust their survival skills, the raising of the pups and even the concern over an injured family member show close observation and remarkable intuitive understanding of wolf behavior. Of course beloved part-wolf Charlie is the reason for the success of the year long project as the author readily acknowledges.
The story is fast moving and flows smoothly from one chapter to the next. Also beautifully descriptive, compassionate and in places humerous. The numerous photos add to the account. A valuable addition to the story are the descriptions of the various animals the Thayers' encountered who share wolf habitat. An excellent addition to anyones book shelf.
A Fascinating Read.......2004-05-12
I collect books about wolves. This book is different with a new perspective both fascinating and informative. The author, explorer Helen Thayer, her explorer husband, and their Inuit dog Charlie of the best selling book, "Polar Dream" fame,(the author's book about her first ever by a woman to walk alone to the magnetic North Pole)lived a year with wild wolves above the Arctic Circle summer and winter. The author tells us "it would have been impossible without Charlie. He was the bridge we needed to cross the gap that allowed us to live alongside wolves and share their lives."
Charlie, part wolf, was quickly accepted. His human pack was accepted shortly afterward. The affectionate nature of wolves, their interaction with other animal species, even polar bears, that's not well documented elsewhere, is truly enlightening. The escapades of the mishievious pups are adorable as is their care and teaching by the adults.
The amusing episodes, the highly emotional times and the valuable information makes this book a winner. Beautifully written, vivid description, allows the reader to share this amazing and unique experience.
The reader soon knows each wolf, its personality, and its role in family life as if the reader were right there with the author.
A true winner in wolf literature.

Book Description
A lavishly illustrated, heartfelt examination of the wolf as a spiritual and ecological role model
• Dispels the myths of the wolf as a “blood-thirsty predator”
• Shows the spiritual importance of connecting to the creatures of the natural world
• Tells the story of the author’s 8 years of living with wolves at the Lüneburger Heide Wildlife Preserve in Germany
In the past, animals had worth to people only if they were edible, could carry heavy loads obediently, or had some other practical use. Recently, however, we have started to realize what we have lost through the extinction of so many wild creatures. Every step we take away from nature we pay for with a loss of understanding and wisdom. What we persecute and exterminate in the outer world we also eradicate in our souls. The highly stigmatized wolf, brought nearly to extinction by humans, is one part of our natural world whose value and wisdom we are just beginning to understand.
In
Kinship with the Wolf, Tanja Askani reveals a new facet of relating to wolves and to the world as a whole. Unlike other wolf researchers who strive to dominate these “vicious predators” and who measure their success by how much the wolf pack obeys them, Askani bases her wolf relationships on broad respect and knowledge as well as extraordinary empathy and love. She reveals a new picture of the wolf as a highly intelligent, social, sensitive creature that brings inestimable value to healthy natural systems. Her respect for the pack’s autonomous rules and her sensitivity to the wolves’ changing feelings and moods clearly distinguishes her from others who work with wolves. Her ability to communicate with and relate to wolves is a model of how we can respond to the intelligent complexity of life with care, respect, and wisdom and how we can maintain an intensive connection to the natural world without exercising human dominance.

DISAPPOINTED.......2007-09-15
I own, and have read, many books about wolves. They are fascinating and beautiful creatures. When I purchased this book, I expected extensive day-to-day detail of living with wolves. Instead, much of the book consisted of materials about wolves in general, most of which I already knew.
Review: Kinship with the Wolf.......2007-05-07

Book Description
What could be the outcome of a marriage of convenience between unregenerate Nazis and Arab terrorists if one of the wedding gifts was a pair of Soviet nuclear devices? If the honeymoon site was an ODESSA-controlled installation in the Congo? If the best man was an American President with a weak moral spine? CIA case officer Hank Ingalls asked himself these questions before he went missing. Powerful government elements want him written off.Furious, the DCI orders a clandestine rescue operation. The CIA resurrects Sean Brogan, an operative forced into retirement because of direct, often violent, problem-solving techniques. Brogan, working with a beautiful Mossad agent, uncovers terrible truths that could destroy the moral leadership of the U.S. among the nations of the world. With enemies threatening to destroy him after he leaves the White House, the President believes the nuclear destruction of Israel is a reasonable price to pay for self-preservation.

Spy thriller.......2007-02-23
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (2/07)
Sean Brogan walked off of his job as a Counter Terrorist Branch Chief with the CIA when the opposition arranged a hit for him and killed his beloved wife instead. Ten months later, an early morning call has him back in the office of his old division chief, Lou Stark.
Hank Ingalls, a top field agent who knew more about nuclear proliferation than any man alive, and the man who once saved Sean's life is missing. The Agency, that had fired him right before he disappeared, will not authorize anyone to look for him. Determined to try and find Hank despite orders not to, Lou turns to Sean, knowing he could be trusted to do the job without worrying about be bureaucracy might say or do. After all, when he lost Jennifer, he lost everything in his life that mattered.
Now, with few leads other than reports that Hank was killed by a lion near Zaire, Sean sets out to find him. Searching through Hank's files, Sean discovers that highly classified reports are missing, removed by high-level government bureaucrats. In order to recreate the files, Sean decides to start his search in Germany, Hank's last assignment.
There, Sean picks up a trail that leads him to Zaire, to an Odessa-controlled research laboratory that is preparing nuclear weapons. Sean, with the help of Mossad agent Rachel Allon, local businessman Jean-Pierre Bolenge and his niece, attempt to stop the Nazis and their Arab co-conspirators before the nuclear warheads are unleashed on Israel, a fact known to the U.S. Government who is prepared to destroy Israel in order to hold on to the Arabian oil resources.
A good fast read, "To Live Among Wolves" contains a lot of background information on the behind the scenes workings of the CIA and how the Agency finds itself losing the power to go about its business by the watchdogs on Capitol Hill who worry more about what's in something for them than what best serves the country's security.
A First Class tale.......2006-08-25
Alan Simon's novel keeps one on the edge of one's seat. One suspects that many of the situations Sean Brogan confronts were developed from the memories of Mr. Simon or those with whom he worked.
We can hardly wait for the next installment in this tale to find out what become of Sean and Rachel.
Nice Twists.......2006-03-29
This book is in the style similar to Daniel Silva books. Sean Brogan (the protagonist) at times resembles a WWF wrestler more than James Bond, but the thrill of the "spy genre" is evident throughout the book. All in all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to new works from Mr. Simon.
Also, check out his website at
www.alsimonbooks.com. He used to be a real-life spy. It adds something to the overall effect.

Accessing archeytpal memories.......2006-02-15
It is interesting to me to see the way one person's account of an intensely felt memory has been accepted as evidence of renincarnation. I refer here in particular to the research work done by Walter Semkiw. What about the many unpublished accounts and experiences of others who identify closely with the life experiences of Anne Frank, indeed, feeling such an affinity that they too believe that they may have been Anne Frank in a past life? For one such account that approaches the connection from a Vedantic point of view (Indian philosophy), please read Letter to Anne by Frances Todd, which you can also locate on Amazons.com Read it, compare notes with this account, and review. Yes, I am the author of that book. It is not so much that I have written that book, as, I have compiled an account of an inner journey that required identification with personality and dreams of Anne Frank, to effect self-healing. Personal healing is a conduit for cosmic healing. The purpose of any reincarnation story is ulitmately, linked with the concept: the one is many. If you are a person who is sensitively living with the planet's energies, then you will understand how the personality expression is simply, a composite of streams of energies called archetypes. No one person has a copyright to them.
terrific story, touching portrayal........2003-01-21
I read and re-read Ms. Karlen's book and found it to be a heartfelt commentary on the persistence and tenacity of the human spirit. I believe this book and Lance Armstrong's book both illustrate how one person can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and emerge a winner.
Huh?.......2001-12-29
Never have I been as perplexed about a book as with this selection.Aside from the back that the writing style/ language is droning, montone and without texture of any kind, I don't know what the book was aiming to explain. The story is Boring-
I had to search high and low for details about the re-incarnation aspects. This subject, which claims to be the main one of this book actually takes a back seat to the authors mundane tales of dressage, and I supposes tales of persecution.
I am usually delighted by a nice photo section, but here again I was mystified by the selection: a photo of the author at age 2, age 2 1/2, age 7, age 12, another age 12, different headshot pose, one of the author in 1981 next to a horse, another in 1989 with two horses and "a colleague"- no identification , another photo of the author on a horse, late 1980's, another horse photo with the author, 1989, another of the author (surprise!) with a horse, 1991, and then a headshot of the author 1997, and then a different pose 1998.No other photos of persons, objects, buildings, streets, family members documents- basically nothing besides that author in her dresssage get-up ,or a studio portrait of her face. This is so eerie.
I have read hundreds and hundreds of biographies, memoirs, including dozens of narratives of people's experiences with past life regressions and the like. This one is a doozie, this lady is just plain flaky and a poor storyteller as well.Sorry- add me to the extensive list of people who the author claims to be persecuted by.
Was she really Anne Frank reincarnated?.......2000-08-01
This is the long--awaited English translation of "Und die Woelfe heulten," the controversial bio-novel in which Swedish writer Barbro Karlen claims to be the reincarnation of Anne Frank -- yes, THE Anne Frank who wrote famous diary. The book created quite a stir in the German-speaking world when it first came out in 1997. There were angry protests, as well as attempts to stop its publication, on the part of a small segment of the Jewish population who believed in neither reincarnation nor freedom of speech -- all of which I reported in "Life and Soul" magazine (London) in 1998.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and the book was published. I'm giving it five stars -- not because I really believe she was Anne Frank (I'm skeptical) but as a vote of free speech for a very brave author. The book raises some real questions about how issues from one life might be carried over into another, and how they might be resolved. Regardless of whether you decide the story is fact or fiction, "And the Wolves howled" is a very thought-provoking read!

Misleading Title.......2007-01-16
I bought this book as a present but when it arrived it definitely was not like what I expected. There is only one project design with directions. The rest of the book is just pictures of what other artists have done. Maybe this would be a good book if you are a skilled carver but for a novice it may be difficult to replicate the designs without any directions.
It has hooks.......2005-12-16
My husband has had the desire forever and I found a class to get him started. This is the first book he brought home from the shop. I read it today and found the illustrations worthy of framing alone. There is one very detailed how to example that takes many baby steps where you gain further skills in multiple cuts and design. VERY IMPRESSIVE.
The different artists selected provide a bio and explanation how they came to carving, their choices in materials with the pro and cons of working within the choice.
If I were to start wood carving from this book as inspiration the project breakdown leaves me believing it would be a success.
Great photos and artist's reviews!.......2003-11-09
This is one of the best sources for a variety of new ideas that I've come across in a while. I carve and sell quite a few woodspirit walking sticks and the excellent color photos of the many professional artists profiled inspired many of my own original ideas. Great selection for any serious woodcarver's library!
Book Description
In 1977 David Foster took to the woods of New England to build a cabin with his own hands. Along with a few tools he brought a copy of the journals of Henry David Thoreau. Foster was struck by how different the forested landscape around him was from the one Thoreau described more than a century earlier. The sights and sounds that Thoreau experienced on his daily walks through nineteenth-century Concord were those of rolling farmland, small woodlands, and farmers endlessly working the land. As Foster explored the New England landscape, he discovered ancient ruins of cellar holes, stone walls, and abandoned cartways--all remnants of this earlier land now largely covered by forest. How had Thoreau's open countryside, shaped by ax and plough, divided by fences and laneways, become a forested landscape?
Part ecological and historical puzzle, this book brings a vanished countryside to life in all its dimensions, human and natural, offering a rich record of human imprint upon the land. Extensive excerpts from the journals show us, through the vividly recorded details of daily life, a Thoreau intimately acquainted with the ways in which he and his neighbors were changing and remaking the New England landscape. Foster adds the perspective of a modern forest ecologist and landscape historian, using the journals to trace themes of historical and social change.
Thoreau's journals evoke not a wilderness retreat but the emotions and natural history that come from an old and humanized landscape. It is with a new understanding of the human role in shaping that landscape, Foster argues, that we can best prepare ourselves to appreciate and conserve it today.
From the journal:
"I have collected and split up now quite a pile of driftwood--rails and riders and stems and stumps of trees--perhaps half or three quarters of a tree...Each stick I deal with has a history, and I read it as I am handling it, and, last of all, I remember my adventures in getting it, while it is burning in the winter evening. That is the most interesting part of its history. It has made part of a fence or a bridge, perchance, or has been rooted out of a clearing and bears the marks of fire on it...Thus one half of the value of my wood is enjoyed before it is housed, and the other half is equal to the whole value of an equal quantity of the wood which I buy."

The best Scandinavian Gardens........2002-05-07
It is spring here in Norway, and the perfect time for gardening. We moved last fall to a 25 years old house with a huge garden, and now we are looking for new inspirations everywhere.
Many of the garden books I find are from a climate much warmer than the one here in the middle of Norway, so reading about grapes, olive treas, huge flowering plants in huge terracotta pots only makes me dream about Italy France and Spain. But then I found the fantastic book about Scandinavian Gardens by Karl-Dietrich Bühler.
Bühler has travelled in the Scandinavian countries and is writing about special and remarcable gardens he has met on his travellings.
The book start with a story of a little boy, actually Bühler's own son, chasing wild gooses, and this reminds Bühler of Niels Holgerson's fantastic travels written by the Swedish Selma Lagerløf. And then Bühler takes us on a travel almost as fantastic as Niels Holgerson's one.
The gardens we meet through the book all has their own charm. Very often when you find a book trying to describe the best gardens, you are taken to the big, public ones, but in this book, together with some of the public garden we also visit some of the quite small, private gardens. We meet the owners and can read about their work of planning and maintaining the gardens.
The book has lots and lots of charming and outstanding pictures. A joy to own, a joy to have on a coffee table, or the garden table. Not as a decoration only, but as a book to look through and get inspiration from when you have washed your hands after hours of garden work.

Impossible to find and certainly charming hardback book of Swedish and Scandinavian furniture before 1948!! All text is Swedish. There is also a year listed, which is helpful for non-Swedish readers as well as owner or provenance of the piece of furniture and I can even figure out a few words myself!
Black and white sharp photos on almost every page. (The title of the book is also the name of some high-end US modern furniture stores, but of course it has nothing to do with the book!) Truly an antique collector or furniture lover's must have. Un paralleled reference for identification and historical note!
Small hardback, large pocket sized. Pages are coated, matte.

At Last!.......2000-11-17
This book is excellent. It is a refreshing change from the one-method-fits-all type of parenting books on the market. Omer intelligently and persuasively outlines a philosophy of parent-child engagement that leaves blame exactly where it belongs--nowhere. The principles of parenting run deeper than time-outs and taking control. This book acknowledges that the parent-child relationship is a two-way street. It is specifically written for those who have found that the ubiquitously prescribed time-outs (for example) do NOT work for all children. Omer offers not only a variety of other options and ideas, but an enormously constructive and healing way of framing the problem so that struggling parents have the means to evolve their own solutions that fit their unique situation. I highly recommend this book for ALL parents because of its powerful and deeply insightful understanding of the most important relationships in our children's lives.
