A Trilogy of the finest works........2007-05-26
Jacques Cousteau will forever remain the man who gave the world scuba diving. Whilst both his work and his films are legendary, several of his early books have stood the test of time to provide the reader with a relevant insight into marine creatures - even though the book itself may have been published over 30 years ago.
Three of Cousteau's finest books were; Dolphins, Shark (Splendid Savage of the Sea) and The Whale (Might Monarch of the Sea) and these now come together in this 3 book set.
Packed with page after page covering all aspects of Dolphin life and behaviour, the first book is as relevant today as it ever was. There is much here for anyone with an interest in these attractive creatures and I would suggest no scuba diver's bookshelf is complete without a copy.
For many years the Shark was perceived as everything that was evil and frightening as far as the sea was concerned. No book about this splendid creature was complete without that section on Shark Attack. Not even the Lions of Africa or the North American Grizzly Bear got such a fearful press. Today, of course, the Shark is endangered and - suddenly!, we are all worried about the Great White and it's other equally magnificent cousins. Only now do we realise how Cousteau was ahead of his time with that same message.
Finally we come to the Whale. I have often wondered what the great Jacques Cousteau and his team would have achieved had they possessed today's underwater photographic equipment and technology - but then I took another look at some of the photographs in this book. beautiful, informative intro to a part of Costeau's realm.......2001-01-01
High quality abundance of color photos, startling B&W shots, and a crisp informative text make this three book set a first rate collection for those wishing more than a cursory view of Whales, Sharks, and Dolphins. Like his National Geographic specials, Cousteau presents his information in a superb and unique manner, peeling back our ignorance of specific phenomena while maintaining an open view on the larger scheme of things.
These are excellent books: informative; educational; and very much alive.

Probably the only book on Whales you will need........2004-12-15
One of my most prized possessions is a personal letter from the late, great Jacques Yves Cousteau which is framed and hangs on the wall of my study. This is the man who brought the undersea world into the living rooms of so many people all over the world. Those television programmes first began in the 1950's and yet, even today, people talk about them as though they went out only yesterday.
Not only did this man pioneer the invention and development of the Aqualung, he also pioneered the development of underwater photography. It was to be expected, therefore, that any book bearing his name would be the most complete and thorough account of the subject and that the photography would simply be the best. It is.
Jacques Cousteau's Whales is a large coffee table book containing 280 pages of sheer value for money. The content includes Whaling in all it's bloody detail, a description of each species, their plight today, their migratory, mating and eating habits and much, much more besides. There are historic references throughout the book where appropriate. Numerous ancient and historic pictures and photographs appear alongside modern photography which detail every aspect of the Whale. As with all good photographs, many of the images speak volumes; Across pages 10 and 11, for example is a photograph of a few Seagulls above a sea turned bright red by Whaling.
For many people, this will be the only book on the subject of Whales the will require and they will not be disappointed.

The Majesty And Grandeur Of Whales.......2004-08-21
"Whales" is an oversized, coffee table book which conveys a great deal of information about its subject. The many pictures, both photographic and drawn, are used both to demonstrate the grandeur of these majestic mammals and as serving as visual aides in support of the text.
This book covers whales from many perspectives. When a particular topic is addressed, the major whale species are covered sequentially. It tells about their anatomy, including their breathing, swimming and eating mechanisms. It tells about their diet and migrations. The history of human impressions of and interaction with whales, the place of whales in literature and the role of whaling are given much attention. Many quotes from Melville and other writers of the past support the text. Conservation and the need to ban whaling are major themes of this book.
At first glance, one might be inclined to think that this book is just one with a lot of pictures and that it is, but it is much more besides. The reader is introduced to an informative and interesting textual treatment of whales. I read it in preparation for a whale watch and was very satisfied. I plan to keep it handy for future reference. Whether one is looking for a thorough introduction to whales or a nature book to leave on your coffee table, "Whales" by Jacques Cousteau is a good choice.

This is an AMAZING book, and DEFINATELY a valuable collector's item if you are a whale fan! The pictures are amazing, and, like always, Cousteau is interesting as well as informative.

Description: from front inside dust cover.......2001-01-02
An extraordinary work in which the friendly and intimate relationship between man and whales gives way to wonder and awe as Captain Cousteau recounts his expeditions accross the oceans of the world in search of the mightiest creature to have ever lived.
Beginning with a fascinating look at some of the remarkable qualities of the whale - its size and the power implied by such enormous proportions, its high level of intelligence, its general lack of aggressiveness and ferocity, and its paradoxical fragility and dependence on the sea, the adventures of the Calllypso team are captured on film and in an absorbing narrative, describing encounters with whales in the Pacific and Indian oceans, including the gray whale and the killer whale.
The result is an unforgettable picture of a creature whose role in the precarious balance of the seas has been misunderstood since ancient times. It is also a creature in criical danger of extinction and Captain Cousteau closes with a passionate plea for its preservation.
The Undersea Discoveries of Jacques-Yves Cousteau.......2001-01-01
This is a superbly and colorfully illustrated book on Whales, a part of the Whale, Dolphin, Shark 3 book set (ISBN 0884860175) remarkable effort by the Cousteau Society Staff. In keeping with his fine work with his National Geographic films Cousteau brings us yet another informative and illuminating glimpse of what we know so little.

It's a great quilt..........2005-11-04
I loved the Irish Chain but it took me a lot more time to complete than a day. I am not a big fan of her quick turn method for putting the batting into a quilt "pillow Case". I gave it a try and it was a mess. I will always use the tried and true way of layering and binding the quilt.
Disappointed.......2005-09-01
I ordered this book and was so disappointed with the quality that I returned it. I thought the printing was so crude that it looked like it was printed on a mimieograph machine. In my opinion the book "Time For A Chain: The Irish Chain Updated" is much better quality, easier to understand and is laid out better.
Irish Chain In a Day.......2003-04-25
I didn't do it in a day, but the instruction is pretty easy to follow. Color pictures. Highly recommended.
Great for beginners.......2002-01-24
This is like most of Eleanor's books well thought out. A very easy step by step approach to the quilt, with good directions and fabric amounts for just about any size quilt you care to make. I use this book in my beginning quilt classes.
Eleanor Burns does it again!.......1999-11-25
Eleanor makes this complex-looking quilt simple. Cutting and assembling the fabrics in strips makes the chain pattern come together beautifully. Might be too much for a beginning quilter; perfect for someone who has already made a quilt or two.
Book Description
The Irish Chain is one of the most universally known patterns dating to pre-American Revolutionary War times. While evidence is lacking that this pattern came from Ireland, it has been suggested that the Irish Chain pattern may have been inspired by a similar Irish weaving pattern. Whatever the origin, the Irish Chain is a timeless pattern that continues to delight quilters today.
The original Irish Chain in a Day was first published in 1986 in a black and white format. While this book remains a best seller, Eleanor wanted to update her book and add balance to the quilt.

Curiosity Grows Relationships.......2006-05-05
Ever feel like you have run out of things to talk about with your partner? My partner and I love this book to avoid just such a situation. We enjoy taking turns asking each other questions from this book. Some of the questions are good to start deep and meaningful conversations and some are good for asking each other at the dinner table.
I highly recommend this book to couples (gay or straight) who want to grow their intimacy and deepen their relationship. This book travels well due to its compact size and can be pulled out at anytime. Go ahead...spark your relationship with Ask Me!
Getting to Know You...........2005-12-15
My partner and I have purchased several books of questions to help us get to know one another better. Ask Me is, by far, the best of the lot. The questions range from silly to serious and really encouraged a number of deep discussions about our pasts, our values, and our hopes for the future. It has been fun to have at home, in the car, and we've even read a couple of questions ahead of time to discuss while out for dinner.
I would recommend this book for any couple, hetero or homesexual.
