The Best Chow Book!.......2003-10-06
This book is the best Chow book I have seen. There is tons of information specific to Chows, and even though I have been a Chow owner for 14 years, I still gained some new knowledge. If you already love Chows, or want to learn more about them, this is an excellent resource. This book also has tons of ultra cute photos of Chows as well!
A must-have for chow chow lovers!!.......1999-08-25
Out of all the chow books I've read this is definitely the best! On almost every page there is a color picture of our favorite furballs, and it's packed full of information on the usual info such as grooming health care, etc, but I especially enjoyed the chapter on showing (or not) and the chapter explaining canine behavior. But my favorite feature of the book is that every page contains info about chows in particular, not just watered down generic information that could apply to any breed of dog. Thanks to the authors for helping me better understand my chows!
Love your Chow!.......1998-07-09
This inexpensive book is one of the best Chow books available. Written by a well-respected breeder/judge of Chows. Covers all aspects of care and training. This is the best selling Chow book at the Dog Shows. Don't be misled by the small size, the true description of the Chow's unusual character is there.

Nice Inexpensive Primer.......2004-03-06
While I would not make this the single book I used to learn about and train a Labrador Retriever, it is indeed a quite serviceable treatment of the subject, and used in conjuction with another good book such as Richard Wolper's "Family Dog', can be an excellent reference resource for the neophyte Labrador person. The most improitant aspects of choosing, procuring, and settling your new canine family member into the fold are all covered here, as are a number of improtant other aspects of being thoughtful and helpful caretakers of Labradors.
One thing I would personally stress is that the new owner always use a kennel or crate in which to let the dog feel secure as his little private personal space, a retreat where he can eat, sleep, or watch his new humans as they go about their puzzling life activities. Knowing he or she is safe in the crate when you leave the house is comforting, and the dog is saved from making harmful or mischievous choices in your absence. And, of course, ensuring you take care to get proper vet care for you rnew friend is critical as well. This book offers some sage advice, and is a great bargain considering its value to the process of welcoming your new Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!
Lab Owner not Crazy Anymore!.......2000-07-30
After reading this book I realized I have a great dog and the book helped me to understand him and the right way to care for him. He is a 30lb baby right now but will get alot bigger by the time he is full grown. This is a great book&recommended reading for anyone with a lab.

Proper care of Bichon Frises .......2007-05-07
I was not too impressed with this book as there were lots of pictures but not a lot of information. Overall I believe I could have done very well without the purchase of this book. Nice pictures though.

U is for Unicorn.......2005-03-25
This book is simply phenominal. The designs are beautiful and the instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. Nothing is left out in this publication.
Book Description
So what exactly is "pop bonsai"? Bonsai like you've never seen before-a "freestyle" version, in fun containers, that reflects the author's breakaway approach to this ancient art.
Pop Bonsai involves taking a tiny seedling, trimming its branches and leaves, and wiring the trunk and branches to bend them into almost any style. The result: a living work of art, for next to no cost, to display as you like-in a ball of moss, on a can of beer, even in a pair of shoes or an eggcup!
Naturally this does require some basic bonsai techniques, and advice on looking after plants. But in contrast to classical bonsai, where the aim is carefully to reproduce natural scenery in miniature, pop bonsai stresses the imagination and creativity of people living modern lives.
Throughout, Pop Bonsai takes a no-fuss approach. Almost any kind of tree or foliage plant can be used, and you're encouraged to grow it from scratch. Before starting, you are told what you should know about trees in general, with hints on choosing the right one for your purpose. Instructions on care
and maintenance-soil, temperature, pruning, watering and fertilizers-are provided in a sensible, easy-to-follow way that should take the tension out of "gardening" even for those who have never tried it.
In your own home or on a balcony or at work, pop bonsai will let you enjoy the wonder of the changing seasons close-up, and remind you how precious and fragile life can be. But, cared for properly, your tree should live for decades. And in the process it will give you a taste of the enormous
satisfaction to be gained from creating, and watching over, your own living work of art.

Pop Bonsai.......2007-05-10
I loved this book. The pictures are adorable, it inspires great ideas, and it gives great information about bonsai trees. Its kind of informal and is more fun than function, so buy this book it for into bonsai but not extremely serious about it.

Russel is extra special/ a book about Autism for chidren.......2007-09-27
This book could be appropriate for siblings of a child with classic Autism. I would not reccomend this book for the use of explaining Autism in a whole. If you are looking for something that dipicts a child with highfuncting Autism or Aspergers, this is not the book for you.
Helpful for children & adult family members - even teachers & profeesionals.......2005-07-02
I am a medical professional with lots of experience in psychiatric & social disordersm and I recommended this book to a group of women (Veteran's wives) with high rate of autism in their children. I learned a few new things from this book myself.
Dr Amenta has written a very compassionate, insightful, and informative book that works for children, extended family and also for teachers & professionals dealing with autistic children.
The photos are ingenious; they convey much more feeling and information than any illustration could.
The language is simple, and understandable for children.
The one or two reviewers who stated this was "sad" or "disappointing" are way off-base, I believe.
Dr Amenta makes it clear that this is ONE case of autism and that other autistic children may function at higher or lower levels of social awareness & insight than Russel does. This is stated several times in the book.
Rated 5 stars for helping children, family friends & relatives, and teachers understand what autism means - and for providing a loving, insightful look into one family's experience.
Dara Lane author Small Miracles Day by Day.......2004-10-03
I think this is an excellent book-warmly written by a father. The pictures are wonderful. As the parent of a low functioning autistic child, I was glad to see a book that to which our family could relate.
INDIVIDUAL PORTRAIT OF AUTISM.......2003-10-15
The author has three children, one of whom has autism. He does a good job in capturing Russell's expressions as he navigates socially within his family. The other children provide their insights on their brother's behavior.
Autism is not clear cut nor is it black and white as the photographs in this book. It is a neurosensory condition replete with behaviors that appear to have a sensory basis, e.g. aversion for loud noises and certain smells.
I felt the effort was good and the intentions were good, but I was disappointed in the book. I felt it emphasized Russell's seeming isolation and did not explain that this was an individual account and not a general overview of autism. Although the photographs would most likely make that point, I felt the book didn't quite get that across as the writing appeared to generalize autism when it is a spectrum condition that is as varied as the number of individuals who have it.
Captivating photos from the life of Russell.......2003-08-19
A book about autism for children is by Charles A. Amenta III, M.D. He is the father of three boys, one is autistic. The book is black and white photographs of his sons, showing how his son relates to his siblings and parents. There is a two page introduction for parents and then captions under each photo. The last page lists some resources.
This is a great way to teach the reading public about autism by example within the home setting in these family photographs. His siblings can use sign language as well and have fun at the breakfast table. There is a photo of Russell deep in thought while in the bathroom. The photos reflect the daily rituals an autistic child has and how a family makes the best of it.
The book shows Russell as a happy engaging boy who is well loved by his family. An excellent book to read to siblings, have relatives read, other kids who may know the child with autism and need to gain some further insight.

A biography, not a resource book.......2000-01-18
I found this book to be a touching tribute from a father to his son. I did not find it helpful for children. Children were drawn in to the story (I used it in the classroom) but couldn't identify with the issues of other autistic children. I, too, think that stories about nonverbal autistic children with motor stims is very limiting. Finally, I must say that the author is obviously very self-important, which I found to be a turn-off.
Thank you Charles A. Amenta III.......1999-07-17
"Russell is Extra Special" and so is is family! Thank you for letting us peak at your life. As a parent to a seven year old and a recently diagnosed (autistic)2 1/2 year old this book was recommended by a Special Resource Teacher. The pictures are simplistically beautiful and real and the text is basic without being vague. Not only did my seven year old learn from this book but my husband and I as well. The forward to parents had some statistics and benchmarks that some professionals are hesitant to share. I have already read a stack of books on the subject but don't expect that all our family and friends will. In this way "Russell" is an excellent "light" read (while remaining very informative)to pass along to all involved in the life of an autistic child. I wish Russell and his family all the best from me and my family!!
A nice book, but very limited in it's use with kids.......1999-04-13
This is a lovely book, and the author's photo/illustrations are a nice idea. Anyone purchasing this book should be aware that Russell is non-verbal, and stereotypical in his mannerisms and behavior. As a parent of a 4 year old autistic son, I wish there were a book that discussed issues such as perseveration and echolalia...both drive my six year old completely crazy!! I shared this book with him, and it didn't really offer him any insight. If you have an aloof, non-verbal child, this is a great book. If not, don't bother.
"Russell is Extra Special" is extra special!.......1999-03-28
An honest, clear and affectionate book about one boy with autism. It not only gives a simple explanation of autism, but also gives a vivid picture of Russell himself as an individual, and of how his autism affects both him and his family. A lovely way to explain autism to children.
