Naturally sweet.......2001-08-01
This book gives information about alternatives to refined sugar. It is a very good book with excellent recipes (from simple cookies -the chocolate shortbread sounds terrific- to cakes and ice creams. But, something important, be ready to buy or order (there is a page of sources. Fantastic!) "Sucanat" or "maple sugar", "rice syrup" or "maple syrup". Because if you do not have these on hand, you cannot try the recipes. There are also some recipes with honey, an ingredient that is easier to find.
Easy to Enjoy.......2001-01-10
Most of the cookbooks I own come with the appliances I buy. This book is an exception. I enjoy the flavours of maple syrup and honey and was delighted to find a cookbook that caters to my tastes. I find the recipes easy to follow. I'm not an expert in the kitchen. Beside each recipe is a margin where the author has put some notes and room enough for you to enter any notes you may want to as well. At the end of some recipes are tips that give you a clue as to what to expect if you've never had the experience of, "Carmelizing Maple Syrup", for example. Another tip I really liked was the suggestion of using a variety of apples in my apple pie. That was a tasty surprise. The Pastry recipe, which she credits to Julia Child, is the best I've ever had. If you are a chocolate lover, try Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake. It's heavenly. I find the author's approach to the reader to be like a personal tutorial. It's like she's right there watching over and encouraging your every move. I haven't tried all the recipes yet but I'm getting a little braver as I tackle the standards: date squares, brownies, pies, and cookies. Thank you Carrie Davis for the "Naturally Sweet Baker".
Yummmy!.......2001-01-10
As a professed chocoholic I was prepared only to savour the chocolate recipes in Carrie Davis's The Naturally Sweet Baker. But to be fair, I didn't restrict myself to those, although there is an ample supply. And I have to admit, that Davis's Maple Mousse is just about the nicest dessert I have ever made or eaten! And my guests raved about it too.
Of course, Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake was a real winner as well. This cookbook is a great resource for information about alternatives to refined sugar in your baking, and an absolute treasure trove of recipes. Check it out for some fun, adventure and delicious treats!

great if you hav son.......2006-05-29
I have a son and I love him so much. This book is so beautiful. Everytime we read it together, it is a celebration of our love for each other. I think that it is very important for black mothers to express that kind of love to theirs sons daily given the type of world we live in. In addition, the paintings in this book are a feast to the eyes. My son loves it and I do too.
Warm and Endearing .......2005-11-22
I LOVE this book!!!!! The words are short and sweet, enough to grab and hold the childs attention for days. The illustrations are beautiful. The pictures really grasp the love that is felt in each and every page. I love to read this story aloud to the children I work with, they just love the colors and the repetative language. I can't wait for her to write the next book!
Just Because.......2005-04-09
"Honey Baby Sugar Child, Lord knows I love you so." This is the simple first line that begins HONEY BABY SUGAR CHILD, a wonderful book that celebrates the love a mother has for her child. The warm and inviting illustrations mirror the sentiments of the storyline and help maintain interest. In a nutshell, the book is filled with various expressions of love that are realistic and full of emotion.
This book has become a part of a daily reading ritual with my toddler. Sometimes he turns the pages as I read and other times we act out some of the scenes. As a mother of a boy, I really appreciate the fact that the child in the book is male; however, the story will appeal to readers of either gender. The story reminds parents of the importance of telling their children they are loved unconditionally, while maintaining a timbre that makes the book just plain fun to read.

Rock while you Read!.......2004-11-08
This gem of a book was written to be read aloud. It reads like a snappy little song. I heard a librarian read it at the public library today and all the little kids left the reading singing, "HONEY BABY SUGAR CHILD!" The actual plot is a mother's love declaration to her young child. Every new mother and newborn should experience the tenderness offered here. Every kid in elementary school should experience the unconditional love and affirmation in the text.
I am stocking up on this one for Chrismas Gifts if amazon can deliver. Otherwise, my friends' kids will receive this one for birthday presents in the '05.

A dessert cookbook focused on taste and comfort........1998-07-30
Janet Warrington brings a fresh test to dessert. Because she doesn't use sugar or sweetners her dishes taste real and not powered by the sheer sweetness that many dessert cookbooks are loaded with today. She uses a lot of ideas and ingredients that my grandmother uses in making her delicious. It's great to finally have a cookbook of desserts that aims at taste and comfort rather than sugar power.

Indespensible if you build model sailing ships.......2007-01-08
When I found excerpts from Mr zu Mondfeld's book online, I searched around till I found a copy. After reading it, I am reminded of the telegram allegedly sent regarding the 10 Guinea race won by the yacht America; to paraphrase - "HSM first, there is no second". Buy it; study it; use it; you won't be disappointed.
Historic Ship Models.......2006-11-10
Moderately helpful in detailing ship's construction and equipment. Unfortunately zu Mondfeld does not furnish dimensins which would make the book more helpful.
The Defintive Guide Found.......2004-03-15
After searching the internet extensively for information on the rigging of Continental cannons and carronades I got pretty much nothing. Within 1 minute of opening this book, I had everything I needed. Reviewing additional sections showed me the wealth of information I had just tapped. The internet may have the information I need, but not at one place like this book. Excellent print, excellent information and the drawings are absolutely the most concise and accurate I have seen anywhere. I hit the goldmine with this reference piece.
Very good reference & overview........2002-10-26
The book is really well laid-out; generally, 2 facing pages make a section, with text on the left and finely detailed drawings on the right, more detailed secions (like armament) cover several pages, but still retain the overall look. The sections cover every conceivable aspect of the ship, and most periods, with an concise description of each item and the differences over the years and between the countries.
The sections on yards and sails are very good, and the standing rigging is exceptionally well described.
My only quibble is lack of colour in the flag & sail sections - it would improve some of the others as well.*****
Will give you a ton of information........2002-04-04
This book is not a manual of help to the beginners. In fact it is an excellent summary of useful references for the most advanced modelers.

Book Description
The Chinese garden has been explored from a variety of angles. Much has been written about its structural features as well as its cosmological, religious, philosophical, moral, aesthetic, and economic underpinnings. This book deals with the poetic configurations of the private garden in cities from the ninth to the eleventh century in relation to the development of the private sphere in Chinese literati culture. It focuses on the ways in which the new values and rhetoric associated with gardens and the objects found in them helped shape the processes of self-cultivation and self-imaging among the literati, as they searched for alternatives to conventional values at a time when traditional political, moral, and aesthetic norms were increasingly judged inapplicable or inadequate.
The garden was also an artifact and a locus for material culture and social competition. Focusing on a series of anecdotes about private transactions involving objects in gardens, the author dissects the intricate nexus between the exchange of poetry and the poetry of exchange. In tracing the development of the private urban garden through the writings of Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Sima Guang, and their contemporaries, the author argues that this private space figured increasingly as a place of disengagement for those out of political power and hence was increasingly invaded by political forces.

Customer Reviews:
This book kept me SANE during a very difficult time!.......2005-01-03
This book was an absolute godsend. My baby was born 6 weeks premature after a very long and difficult pregnancy. I spent the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy on complete hospital bedrest with preeclampsia, and my daughter was born via emergency c-section due to a severe drop in heart rate. She was placed on a ventilator, had central lines, and I couldn't even hold her until she was three days old. It was terrifying. However, while I was in the hospital, my neonatology group gave this book to me (we knew I wouldn't be able to carry her much longer due to my severe preeclampsia) and I began reading it a week before she was born. While the experience was very frightening and stressful, I really felt like I knew what was going on, and I didn't have so many nagging questions. If I thought of something during the night or while the doctors weren't around, I picked this book up and the answer was almost always there. Dr. Frank Manginello (the book's author) was my daughter's attending neonatologist while she was in the NICU, and I can't begin to tell you how amazing this man is. He's a brilliant physician and wonderfully compassionate. When meeting with him, he would encourage us to ask questions. When he finished answering one question, he would say, "Ok, what else?" We never felt rushed, and he cared for our daughter with love, compassion, and an absolute mastery of neonatal skills. His book is a reflection of his work. Our daughter went home 8 days after she was born, in time for her first Christmas! She is doing beautifully! I really feel this book helped me through the whole situation, and I thoroughly recommend it to any mom who has the prospect of having a preemie. It is really written for parents (like me!) who don't know anything about neonatal medicine and want the truth broken down simply step by step. This book is even broken into chapters regarding how premature the baby is. If you're researching this book, good luck to you, and I recommend it highly!
I just want to add that this book is not meant to be for emotional support, or a breastfeeding resource. That is the job of the NICU staff! Dr. Manginello was VERY encouraging and supportive of my decision to breastfeed my baby! This book is meant to be a resource to help answer questions you have about what happens to preemies, not an emotional resource! I don't think any book could effectively give the emotional support needed to get through this time. It just makes your experience easier when you know what's going on.
Half the picture.......2001-08-31
The emotional realities of life in the NICU are as important as the medical realities. This book doesn't do a good job of recognizing the importance of emotional support, and has tone that is authoritative but not warm or encouraging on an emotional level.
Not bad, for a reference book.......2001-01-06
When my ten week early preemie came back to the hospital of his birth, the nurses loaned me this book, as well as one on Kangaroo Care. This is a good REFERENCE book, meaning that it gives clear information on different things to expect from infants born within certain gestational periods, but does not seem to have a supportive emotional tone. Frankly, I am glad I read the loaner on Kangaroo Care first. It was informative as well as comforting during this very stressful time. I am thankful that my hospital not only loaned both books, but strongly advocates Kangaroo Care. I would recommend this reference book be used in ADDITION to an emotionally uplifting book, which would cover all the bases for parents.
Technically appropriate, emotionally crippled........1999-07-21
My son was born at 28 wks-while this book gave me all the med info-tech support I could have asked for, ultimately it felt 'hands off'. I am a huge advocate of kangaroo care for preemies, if you have a preemie PLEASE find a compassionate medical provider that understands and supports this kind of mother/child care! If you wish to breastfeed DO NOT GIVE UP! PUMP! It's not fun, but it can work. -DON'T SLEEP WITH YOUR CHILD IN YOUR BED?! At 16 mnths my son is just leaving our bed-it's been sweet, it's been HEALTHY. PLEASE read the Sears' 'The Baby Book' for emotional and common sense back-up, not geared specificly towards preemies, this book espouses the kind of HANDS ON parenting our children really need-especially our preemies. My '28-wkr' is healthy, bright and sweet-I credit kangaroo care and 'The Baby Book' for alot of it! I wish you the best.
Informative about the confusing time in the NICU........1999-07-09
This was a wonderful book. After getting home each night from the NICU I'd read up on what they told me about my son (born at 33 weeks). It is very important to read ONLY the sections that apply to your baby. Otherwise you'll worry about things that do not apply. I do not agree with Jenny William's review above. Sometimes while baby is NICU it CANNOT breast feed because sometimes preemies need special formula due to digestive problems. And many (as mine did) have alot of trouble learning to suck and need to be tube fed for awhile. This book covers the NICU from soup to nuts in a manner that the parent can understand.
