Book Description
Exciting medium, new formulations: perfect for crafters at all skill levels
Award-winning, best-selling author with great crafts credentials
First book on resin that provides detailed techniques and varied super-appealing projects
Resin jewelry is made from liquid plastic that magically turns solid when a hardener is added. Pretty cool! The popularity of these resins for jewelry making has soared with the introduction of easy-to-mix, low-odor products, ideal for crafters. Now best-selling author Sherri Haab shows how to put the miracle of modern technology to work making necklaces, bangles, bracelets, pins, earrings, and rings. Projects range from simple to sophisticated, from Bakelite-style heart pins to faux amber earrings to glitter gem bracelets, from scrimshaw bracelets to cloisonné pins to transparent resin necklaces backed with gold leaf. Packed with tips on tools, supplies, finishing, and creating special effects, including ideas on combining resins with polymer clay, The Art of Resin Jewelry is a beautiful and practical introduction to an exciting craft.
Customer Reviews:
Safety first.......2007-09-21
You must use protective gear when using resin products but the precautions are worth the results. Sherri shows you how to use epoxy, polyurethane and polyester resins to imbed candy, flowers and found objects to make jewelry elements. You can make imitation amber by including bugs and vegetable matter in resins and make amber's "sun spangles" by mixing in gold or bronze leaf. It's pretty exciting to see how Sherri uses a combination of black polymer clay, very fine glitter, Pearl Ex(tm) powdered pigments and Envirotex Lite® epoxy to make a light-weight cabochon that looks just like dichroic glass.
When using resins, use NIOSH-approved protective gear (respirator and nitrile or butyl gloves) and keep away from food preparation areas. Always read the resin product's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to using it. When drilling or sanding resin pieces, you must wear a dust mask. Other than standard beading tools and findings, an embossing gun will come in handy to get rid of air bubbles during the resin's drying process. You can use ready-made rubber molds or use Sherri's techniques to make your own molds from an existing piece or your original polymer clay sculpture.
If you already enjoy working with polymer clay, working with resins will expand your creativity and this book will help to get you (safely) started.
Choice of art pieces.......2007-09-09
This book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in making resin jewlery. Its in depth and as always Sherri Haab explains in detail just "how to" do it. My disappointment is with the pieces of jewlery she chose to create. There are only a few that I would duplicate. That said if you are wanting to learn this medium then buy the book.
Great all-round resin jewellery book.......2007-02-10
I am really happy with this book. It has a great selection of projects and lots of different types of resin jewellery. Lots of pictures. I haven't made anything yet but it seems really easy to follow.
this book is great.......2007-01-10
Sherri Haab can always be relied to to produce great books with funky projects that you actually want to make. Can't fault this one at all - fantastic!
Great Book For Inspiring Artists.......2007-01-10
I am speaking on behalf of my company (Fibreglass & Resin Sales), we sell this book to many customers, although some of my staff have also purchased the book. It has great, handy ideas for those who love their crafts, and even those who are new in the craft world! If you interested in Resin Art, I would recommend this book to get you going!!!
Customer Reviews:
Best resin jewellery book I've found.......2007-02-10
This is a great book for people who seriously want to make resin jewellery. It has step-by-step instructions accompanied by lots of photos. I was not fussed on the finished jewellery examples (not really my style) but the processes and procedures are really good.
Resin at its best.......2006-08-24
Kathie Murphy produces an excellent book which gives you an insight into the many types of resin, the pros and cons of using each type together with safety information.
I have both the "English" and "American" version of this book, if people are unsure when it comes to specific word or description, check it out for yourself. There is not that big a difference. Books are global!!
Just be thankful that we have a book that really helps people understand this amazing medium. Beautiful gallery of work, if you work with Resin, this is a great book to have.
great book.......2006-07-29
I like this book not only because it explains the technique of resin casting very well, but also for its beautiful pictures of real resin art. Although I will never be able to produce such work, you get the feeling that she sky is the limit with this material
Another Euro/English to American translation.......2006-03-27
This is another of the published both sides of the pond at the same time. The only problem with this book is the lack of careful editing done by the U S publisher krause publications.
So as to the subject matter it is covered only to the depth of giving the hobbyists an idea of what is involved in making jewelry out of resins and epoxies. It does go into the safety concerns, but not in one section all through the book. It is laid out so you can skim thru it and find what is interesting and use that section. It does have a half useful glossary. It was a forerunner of the new group books on this sub category of jewelry material use.
One thing that I had to track down to make sure of what it was as mentioned in the book was misspelled. It was spelled linicher which a friend in England informed me is correctly spelled linisher which in American is belt sander.
Even with the short comings it is a starting point for anybody looking in to getting started in resin jewelry making. Some of the resource guide places are out of date. But a web search will come up with more than enough locations for info on plastics and resins. I own it and will be keeping it
Resin Jewelry.......2003-10-21
This is the first book I've come across for using resin as a craft material. It is a how-to book, and it does a good job of being a book for beginners. It is difficult to follow in some places. Some of the descriptions seem to stop short of a full explanation of a procedure and some of the punctuation seems wrong (and makes understanding the text difficult). The photographs of the featured jewelry and designs are inspiring. I think it's a bit pricey for such a small book. I wish the descriptions of the materials and the procedures were more in depth. This is one of the few books on the subject and bound to give some new information to the reader.
Book Description
Metal clay plus more, more, more!
* Follow-up to the best-selling Art of Metal Clay
* Author has sold more than two million books!
* Metal clay is hot with crafters, artists--anyone who wants to try alchemy
Metal clay starts as clay and turns into metal. Does it get any more magical? Now it does--with Metal Clay and Mixed Media. Author Sherri Haab takes this compelling material, today's hottest craft item, to the next level, brilliantly combining it with other media ranging from the timeless to the unexpected. Ribbons, gold leaf, pottery shards, transparent resin, polymer clay, leather, and more are used in stunning jewelry, decorative pieces, and works of art. Beautiful photography showcases these innovative pieces, and full step-by-step instructions make it easy to re-create them. New formulations of metal clay and newly developed firing techniques are presented clearly so that crafters can achieve professional results. Sophisticated enough for artists yet simple enough for beginners, Metal Clay and Mixed Media is the only book that blends metal clay with mixed media to make magic.
Customer Reviews:
Add other media to your metal clay creations .......2007-09-24
This book's cover features a gorgeous silver charm bracelet to invite you to look into incorporating resins and other media into your metal clay pieces. The book follows Sherri's 2003 Art of Metal Clay and 2006 Art of Resin Jewelry and includes the best of both. She begins with fairly thorough metal clay instructions (although I consider a class essential for safety considerations, especially for people who have not previously used a torch or a kiln). Learning how to plan a design prior to opening a package of metal clay is also an important class lesson because the binder in metal clay dries so quickly.
What sets this book apart from other metal clay books are the instructions on making findings, supports and bezels from metal clay. Other books show jewelry projects and, because many jewelers like to use precious metal findings, Sherri's instructions on findings and bezels are most welcome. There's also a section on the use of color, images, and surface design. If you've enjoyed working with metal clay and want to expand its use, this book is for you.
Review Metal Clay & Mixed Media Jewelry.......2007-06-07
Wonderful book with great layout, pictures and instruction.
If you are starting in metal clay this is a good book to read.
inspiring!.......2007-04-20
This book is jammed packed with helpful information and a ton of eye candy that has me perusing the pages over and over! Having taken a PMC class and having read many books on the subject I was very impressed with the plethora of projects and the detailed instructions. Even the most minute details are covered. And the gallery is absolutely stunning and inspiring!
Many books fall short when attempting to describe step-by-step instructions, but Sherri Haab's book goes the extra mile. The steps outlined are detailed, easy to follow, and understand. The beautiful photos are so incredible that I can hardly wait to try several of the projects covered! In fact, I have already started playing with resin: Fun, fun, FUN!
Anyone purchasing this metal clay book will not be sorry. Reading Sherri's book has definitely taken my art work to a higher level. KUDOS!!!
disappointing.......2007-03-26
I was anxiously awaiting the release of Sherri's second book and must say that I was disappointed when I finally received it. Many of the projects seemed to be near copies of projects in the metal clay book that Louise Duhamel had in her book. There was the same bicycle reflector pendant, a similar project using cement, a project using images covered in resin, a "Moon Baby" project etc. The rest of the projects had very dull and basic metal clay work. There was a bracelet cuff project made with fabric where she made simple molded buttons. The crocheted bracelet had simple metal clay circles on it. There was a leather bracelet with a rectangle of letters, similar to a piece in her first book. Other projects were simple findings such as buckles and toggle clasps. Even the gallery pictures were disappointing. I recognized most of them from previous magazines and books. Many from years ago. I guess what I am saying is that I expected innovation and didn't get it. I understand that Sherri has written many books lately. Perhaps she hasn't had time to spend really diving in and working with the medium, testing the metal clay boundries. I did find Louise Duhamel's book to contain innovation. I hope someone else will step up to the plate again sometime soon.
Wonderful book.......2007-03-08
Very imformative & interesting book. Some wonderful techniques I look forward to trying

Book Description
This book is about the management of forest pests. It focuses predominantly on insect pests, but many examples relate to fungal pathogens, some of which are vectored by forest insects. The central theme of the book is the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the main impetus for which comes from the need to use environmentally sensitive methods of control appropriate to both semi-natural and plantation forests. Such forests are likely to be managed not only for timber production but also for recreation and to enhance biodiversity. An introductory chapter describes how forests have been transformed by exploitation and management and how altering the composition and distribution of forests can contribute to pest problems. Subsequent chapters focus on the 'techniques' of management and control that contribute to IPM, considering in turn plant health, risk-rating, silviculture, tree resistance, biological control, microbial control and semiochemicals. By focussing on these important elements of management, the aim is to provide a critical analysis of the theory and practice of each one in relation to key aspects of both pest and forest ecology. The final chapter on IPM brings together elements of the previous chapters, discussing them in the context of the economic and environmental impact of pests, the economics of control, and the role of decision support systems. Detailed case studies are provided and future developments in IPM discussed in relation to sustainability, conservation and the potential impact of climate change.

Book Description
This text considers forest insects occurring in forest ecosystems, specialized forestry settings, and urban forests, with an approach and coverage that make it suitable for use in both undergraduate and graduate courses in forest entomology and forest protection. Early chapters introduce entomology, middle chapters provide the first comprehensive treatment of the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of forest insects, and later chapters discuss the pest insects according to their feeding group.
Customer Reviews:
a good reference!.......2006-03-29
This book has a basic coverage for forest entomology. It gives a fairly good description of orders, some good pictures, and basic descriptions of forest pests with more focus on the most important ones. I would prefer a bit more information on some hosts, such as whether all are native or exotic (which is not always supplied), what time of year they do damage, how many generations do they have per year, and what sorts of pest control are applied. These things are not always given, but then, I suppose if it told everything about all of them, it woudl be a much larger, more expensive book.

Book Description
Tropical Forest Insect Pests promotes a better theoretical understanding of pest population dynamics, and causes of forest insect outbreaks in the tropics. Covering pests of both natural forests and plantations, it examines the diversity of tropical forest insects; their ecological functions; the concept of pests; and the incidence of pests in natural forests, plantations, and stored timber. General issues on which foresters and forest entomologists hold strong traditional views, such as the severity of pest incidence in plantations vs. natural forests, in plantations of exotics vs. indigenous tree species, and in monocultures vs. mixed plantations are discussed. The final section looks in detail at specific insect pests of the common plantation tree species across the tropics, with recommendations for their control. This is a comprehensive resource suitable for graduate students and researchers in forestry and tropical forest entomology, and for forest plantation managers in the tropics.

Description:
Despite the anthropogenically-induced changes to forest tree demographics, few studies have examined the differences in arthropod species composition between the crowns of trees of different ages. We tested for differences in the taxonomic composition of the canopy arthropod faunas of 100 y.o. and old-growth trees, using eight pairs of trees in an Eucalyptus obliqua tall open-forest with a rainforest understorey in the Warra Long Term Ecological Research Site in southern Tasmania and compared these differences to those related to geographic distances. Sticky traps, hanging flight-intercept traps and bark funnel traps were used to sample the canopy arthropods in different placement situations. There were no significant differences between 100 y.o. and old-growth trees at the tree level, but several at the trap and placement levels. Ordination analyses and correlation analyses indicated that high inter-pair variability related to the geographic distance between trees was partially masking tree age effects. The age of E. obliqua does influence canopy arthropod species composition, but this effect was weaker than the geographic effect that was evident in a relatively uniform forest with a maximum distance between trees of only 324m. This implied high beta diversity in the forest type has implications for the planning of conservation reserves. Further work is needed to see if age effects are stronger in forests of the ages created by silvicultural treatment. atment.

Book Description
This practical new book, the first English language treatise on this subject, provides a unique synthesis of all aspects of forest insect ecology and control. The reader will find coverage on the nature of forest pests, along with extensive analysis of the role of climate, natural enemies,
competition, and interactions with the host tree in insect population dynamics. Careful attention is paid to outbreaks and their impact on the forest environment. A realistic appraisal of the value of silvicultural, biological, and chemical control methods is included, along with information on
how to incorporate these methods into an effective framework of integrated pest management.
Book Description
Recent medical reports announcing the increase in childhood obesity have become front-page news, raising concerns that this generation will face serious physical problems as adults. What is often overlooked, however, is the more immediate impact of the crisis on the children themselves. Rescuing the Emotional Lives of Overweight Children is the first book to take an in-depth look at the lives of these children. Drawing on a national survey she conducted with middle school children, as well as personal interviews and case studies from her private practice, the noted child psychologist Dr. Sylvia Rimm shows the emotional depth of this epidemic. She explains how overweight children struggle in school, have lowered expectations for their future, have troubling relationships with peers and adults, exhibit more high-risk behavior, and are even more misunderstood by their own families. Using her findings as a starting point, Dr. Rimm outlines the ways parents can make a positive difference in their children's lives, including: lBeing aware of the discrimination overweight children face and working to counteract negative biases in school and among a child's peer group lEncouraging healthful eating without engaging in constant nagging and scolding lGuiding children toward greater achievement, better social interactions, more in-de-pen-dence, and higher personal expectations

Not Thrilled........2007-06-11
As a former fat child, I already know the devastating effect being overweight can have on one's psyche. Reading this book just reminded me of my miserable childhood and of the horrors my daughter must be experiencing. In fact, I haven't been able to finish the book because it's so upsetting. Maybe there's some comfort and positive advice in later chapters--I hope so.
There's more to it than taking away sweets . . . .......2006-08-11
Have you ever noticed that "skinny" people say you just need to quit eating fattening foods and exercise more! Well, there is more to it than that. This book goes into the emotional side of why some kids eat too much & what they endure because of it.
My daughter and I both struggle with weight. We've tried limiting what she eats & getting her to exercise more. However, the more we pressed it, the more she saw it as a punishment & an attack on her self esteem. I just wasn't sure how to help her emotionally.
There's such a fine line between saying, "You're unacceptable as you are - you need to change" and "You're a wonderful person no matter your weight". This book goes into how to find that happy medium.
This is the first book that I've felt strongly about reviewing. I have no problems giving it the full 5 stars. I thought it would be one to read & pass along to my friends. However, I'm keeping mine to reference again & buying another to pass along.
Do we want them to want to be thin?.......2005-08-24
This is an excellent book, and one that should be read by anyone who deals with overweight children, as teacher, parent, physician or psychologist. It is well written, with many instructive and poignant vignettes.
Having said that, there are some negatives. The central dilemma in helping the overweight child is a conflict between making the child feel better and making the child thinner. The track record of treatments to make them thinner is poor. Sometimes they work but they involve convincing the child of how desirable it is to be thin. The more convinced the child becomes of the desirability of thinness the worse it feels. Rimm touches on this problem in her earlier chapters, especially in describing her argument with her son the epidemiologist, but does not resolve the issue.
Cigarettes, marihuana and alcohol are barely mentioned. This may be because of her of her focus in the earlier chapters on her own important and groundbreaking work, which was with middle schoolers.
I did not think the chapters on treatment were truly evidence-based although she has many good and useful ideas. She relies on secondary sources and on intuition and anecdotal evidence. It is presumably outside her stated purpose to offer specific dietary recommendations, but she does, in fact, make some suggestions. She might as well have gone the whole hog (sorry) and provided diet sheets rather than scientifically dubious and half-hearted tips about eating three meals a day and "healthy snacks."
The use of diet pills is not mentioned. These seem to be taboo for writers on pediatric weight problems, even though the same medications are widely prescribed to make naughty children behave better (with growth stunting regarded as an unwanted side effect).
From The Critics.......2004-03-30
From The Critics
Library Journal
While many manuals address how to help children combat weight problems through diet, exercise, and family lifestyle changes, none has tackled in-depth their emotional lives until now. Child psychologist Rimm (See Jane Win) compiles results from her national survey of middle-school children, personal interviews, case studies, and other international research to help readers understand the psychological well-being of overweight children. After demonstrating the extent of this public health epidemic, Rimm outlines how these children feel about their poor social interactions, low school achievement, lack of athletic prowess, and troubling family relationships. In many ways, the results are not profound. Still, addressing the emotional aspects of this issue is paramount to the future of these children and to the future of American public health (as discussed in Chapter 2). Drawing on her findings, Rimm provides an important six-step rescue plan to guide parents in helping their overweight children overcome discrimination and acquire a healthier lifestyle that will lead to greater achievement and higher personal expectations.
