I have used this book for years. I found it easy enough to read and help me through my first few years of dealing with marine tanks. And unlike a lot of my books from the beginning this one did have enough "meat" in it to still be relevant as I progressed through the hobby. Overall the content is great and it covers the gambit of marine life. On a different note, the paper and print is of a really great quality as well. This book takes a lot of use and abuse at my house and it really is still in suprisingly good condition. I only mentions this because some of the "cheaper" aquarium books I have picked up throught the years are all falling to pieces. Hope this helped!

Essential but dated.......2007-06-24

Written by one of the foremost experts in the hobby, this is an essential book for beginner and intermediate marine aquarists. It covers the fundamentals of setting up, stocking and successfully maintaining a saltwater aquarium and does so in a common sense, easy to understand fashion. It is an approachable and well-written primer on the topic and is the best way to get started.

However, the book was written in 1999 and is now 8 years old. Remarkably, that means it is already out-dated given the rapidly evolving state of technology in this hobby. The author, Bob Fenner, frequently provides advice and suggestions to aquarists on an internet website and much of the information in his book is qualified or revised the advice he provides now. For example, he highly recommends that macroalgae calupera in this book but, while still recommending it some setups, cautions people today that this algae is not right for all setups due to a tendancy to take over tanks. Some of the modern trends in saltwater aquariums are also not covered in enough depth -- simply because they weren't a trend eight years ago.

Accordingly, this is a GREAT book to read as you begin your research on setting up a saltwater aquarium. Not only is it a first read, but it is a valuable resource that you will continue to turn to before, during and after setting up your aquarium because it is filled with useful advice. However, it is also advice that should be complimented by additional research with more up-to-date materials.

If Bob is reading this, I'd just like to say this: This book is incredible and I can't thank you enough for writing it. If you have the time, please consider writing a Second Edition -- the hobby would benefit from such an endeavor tremendously. Thanks!

I bought this for my mom. She enjoys all the color photographs and the helpful information about setting up a saltwater tank. She isn't ready to start one yet but this was the perfect book to help her when she does. She especially appreciated the photographs of the different types of fish which helped her identify those she would like.

I never write reviews, but this book is so amazing and wonderful that I felt compelled to write one. Book gives excellent and concise advice on all aspects involving the marine aquarium. A must have quick reference that will help you to become the best and most humane marine tank owner.

Poor writing style.......2005-07-09

The book was okay. I was very disappointed in the writing. Although the author had pretty good tips on water gardens, the redundancy of the word "low-maintenance" made it almost unbearable to read.

I had purchased the book because I was interested in low-maintenance water gardens but I did not need to be reminded of it on every page.

Do you love water lilies? . . . Koi? . . . the sound of falling water? . . . the jeweled rainbows of a fountain's spray?

Do you have a bad back? Are you busy?

If you answered "yes" to at least one question in each of the first two paragraphs, this is the book for you!

Water gardening is something that I have always wanted to do, but was daunted by the sheer volume of work . . . and the risk of what could go wrong if I made a mistake. With Ms. Nash's help, both problems can be pleasantly removed.

The book starts by helping with planning and construction. What effects do you want? Sound? Fish? Shape? Match to your home? Lilies? Fountain?

Put it in full sun well away from trees and shrubs. Pick a spot that is elevated so that there will be no run-off into the water. Also, be sure you are well above the water line.

The book goes on to help you select materials, considering the initial costs versus the maintenance involved. You also get a sense of what maintenance is needed during each season, and how you can use preventive maintenance to avoid work later on.

The book contains many practical principles and ideas that I never would have considered. For example, you can put a screen over the water during the season when debris is most likely to get into the water. There is also an inexpensive skimmer you can make that works automatically.

How you filter the water is an art in and of itself. I loved the concept of how you can use a combination of natural filtration and an easy-to-access pump to create clean water.

As an example of another great idea, Ms. Nash suggests having one white fish if you plan to have fish. Changes in that fish's color then will help you monitor the quality of the aquatic environment before unnecessary stress develops.

If you aren't sure what kind of water lilies you want, the gorgeous color photographs should be a great help.

The appendix even has all kinds of useful ratios of the sort the new water gardener is likely to need to know, but will probably not remember.

Unless you are planning to create something on the order of Monet's garden at Giverney, you will find this book tells you more than you could possibly need to know. Keep it as a handy reference, and you'll soon be enjoying a marvelous water garden designed to suit your own preferences!

After you finish enjoying this book, I suggest that you also think about what other changes you could make in your garden that would make it more peaceful for you . . . with minimal effort and maintenance. Do you have a bird bath? Do you have a set of wind chimes?

Establish a natural balance by thinking through the processes that need to be established and maintained . . . in all parts of your life!

Best book I've read with how-to's for busy water gardeners........1999-03-24

Great book for beginners! Helen Nash not only tells what to do for low maintenance water gardening, she tells what not to do. Complete with advice on low-maintenance plant and fish selection. A simple, quick-read book. Fully illustrated.

I mean there are dozens of little spell books out there, and while I am not a practicing witch (even less wiccan) and thus cannot comment on spells (thou they do seem simple and cheeky), I KNOW what appeals to my sense of humor and life philosophy. In this book I appreciate the way the author recommended invoking the power of different deities (in my case a nymph) for each horoscope sign. sweet and humorous.

Being new to the craft, this really confused me. To me alot of the spells seemed to be on the edge of taking anothers free will.

Great books for different Witches.......2002-11-13

I have not bought any of these books but have graced alot of Deborah Grays books and the book store and I think they are great. Even though I am more from a Wiccan background sometimes different spells are needed at different times and its really up to each individual to use their judgement when it comes to casting gray area spells. No I do not agree with every spell she may represent and if so then I won't do it. But alot of her spells are very ethical and fun as I have read quite a few of them. There have been spells in alot of strictly "wicca" books that I don't care for. To each is his/her own!

This book is akin to a fashion magazine. There are lots of great pictures, and interesting celebrity "sex goddess" profiles, but you won't gain anything significant by reading this. The "sex tips" are bland and very typical -- nothing new to be learned here.

There's not much else to say about this book. It didn't teach me anything I didn't already know, and I'm not sure why I bothered to waste money and time on it.

The title of this book talks the talk but the pages don't walk the walk. It wasn't the entertaining read that i expected. the book is not comprehensive enough to be of any use and at times, it appeared, not mature enough for the audience I believe the author is catering to.

This is very cool, and there are several profiles of celebrities that the author views as "sex goddesses." She tells us some info about them and why she put them in her book. There are quite a bit of good suggestions in here and the price is low. It could be better, but I'm not complaining!

I bought this book a while back but thought that it was very thorough and easy to read. It was a fun read that tells you how to be a Sex Goddess as well as define everything there is to being one. You see examples of celebrities "Goddesses" and what makes them one. I'd reccomend this to any woman who either is already a Sex Goddess or a Sex Goddess in training. How to be a Sex Goddess is just under 10 bucks so what do you have to lose.
