If I never picked up a needle, I'd still want to have this book. It is beautifully written and photographed. Instructions are very clear and make it all seem so simple. This book certainly takes the fear out of the idea of quilting. Lesley has done a fabulous job blending the arts of quilting and collage. Pages and pages of wonderful photographs to inspire you to pick up that needle and head for the scrap bag.

Traditionally, quilt making truly IS a form of fabric collage.
How cool, to see the directions in which narrative quilting is moving!
It's expertly shown to those of us lucky enough to run across this swell volume by Ms. Riley. And we realize from the eye candy, ideas, inspiration & techniques illustrated in this charming (& nicely made!) book, that it's not the size of a project that guarantees its impact. I especially love the "Gallery of Quilted Memories" beginning on page 110. Each example is a small treasure of the four elements I listed above & something to which I will continually return.

As a genealogist and quilter who recently discovered Journal Quilts this book has been a godsend. The illustrations are lovely as well as helpful and the step by step instructions for how to do the various techniques, such as photo transfers, have been a great help in constructing my projects. I've been recommending "Quilted Memories" to all the quilters in the About.com Quilt Forum's "Journal Quilts Challenge: 2006".

Great Memories.......2007-05-16

This is a good book to sit down with when you need a break. Grab a cup of coffee, put your feet up, (have some post-it notes at your side so you can mark some pages) and look through the memories. I always get some great ideas for some little thing to make up really quickly, and what a great way to put to use some of the Mum fabric stash that you just hate to cut into, but know you have to someday.

I have bought this book as gifts for my quilting friends. It is remarkable with varied projects such as T-shirt quilts, photo-transfer quilts and many beautiful signature quilts. The photos and the stories behind the quilts were interesting and inspiring.

Wow! Great close-ups, detailed diagrams & wonderful stories........1999-06-26

I was so excited to receive my copy last Saturday, that I sat out on the deck and read it cover to cover. My interest in antique quilts always has me wondering, "Why did the quiltmaker do it that way?" This book tells the stories behind the quilt and where the inspiration began. The detailed instructions for each quilt are excellent. The quotes and verses as filler throughout the book are a nice added touch. The choice for the books cover, in itself invites you to explore the pages inside!! I am, however, partial to "Cardinals in Friendship Pines" on page 64-67. A thank you to all my friends and relatives who made blocks, of one inch squares, to complete the quilt I always wanted to make.

THIS OLD QUILT is a delightful patchwork of quilts, stories, art illustrations and vintage photographs. I was fascinated from the first moment and didn't want to put the book down.

There are five chapters in THIS OLD QUILT and they offer stories about learning to quilt; the quilting traditions of the Amish, Hopi Indians and African Americans; the warmth and love that comes from homemade quilts; the camaraderie of quilting bees; and many lovely stories and poems concerning the American tradition of quilting.

I was so happy to see many of the paintings of Sandi Wickersham that were used to illustrate this book. Sandi lives close by and much of her work is indicative of my area of Virginia. I own a few of her prints and it was fun to find them featured in THIS OLD QUILT. Several other artists including Diane Phalen's work was also used in the book. Their colorful and detailed quilting scenes add an extra layer of depth and pleasure to the book.

I poured over the vintage photographs that are mostly black and white or color enhanced. The ladies from the past are shown displaying their work or sitting among friends and quilting together. One 1936 Depression Era photograph is so striking! It's of a lady standing on the porch of a wooden cabin and displaying her gorgeous quilt that was made in the Dresden Plate pattern. The viewer senses that inside that unpainted cabin, life was probably pretty difficult, but this lady was able to make a work of art out of scraps, and a picture of her beautiful quilt endures for all of us to admire.

There are many lovely stories to read and enjoy, of both fact and fiction. My favorites are: HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas and HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW by Jacqueline Tobin. THIS OLD QUILT is a treasure trove of quilting, memories and lovely pictures. I'm so happy that I treated myself to this endearing book.

This is a delightful new book by Retta Warehime. The quilts will remind you of those found in your grandmother's house when you were a small child. The pictures are wonderful and the directions are easy to follow. Retta has written a personal note about each quilt, who she made it for and why. Its too bad this book is out of print! It is one of the most comprehensive collections of garden architecture and artifacts that I have seen. Over 1000 illustrations. The book draws on seven centuries of history and design from the great and lesser known gardens throughout the world. If you can find a copy of this book, buy it.
