Customer Reviews:
AWESOME PUPPY BOOK.......2004-11-30
This is the best dog book I ever read. If you are thinking of getting a puppy, get this book! It's not hard to read and by the time you are done, you will feel like the best dog expert on the block. Some people might get scared at the size but I gurantee those books that tell you that their supposed to be a junior pet care book only tell you that you should be good owner. This book has a great descripition for how you should take care of a dog. It even includes information about advanced training. BUY THIS BOOK!
THE best puppy book written!.......2001-08-03
Before you get a dog, buy this book! From a terrific "Puppy Scoring" test to help select the right pup for you out of a litter, to practical tips on teething and house training, this book is the best. Used it extensively to raise what became The Best Dog in the World -- their tips helped her be house trained within 2 weeks of coming home (never another accident!). I have given 15 copies of this book as gifts when friends have said they were thinking about getting a dog. If you buy a dog book, buy this one!
The best puppy book I've ever read.......1999-04-02
I read this book when I was a little kid with my first puppy, and I checked it out at the school library. I read it from cover to cover about 20 times. It was amazing, and it helped me as a 12 year old to raise my dog. I loved it so much that I am recommending it for my Mom to use for her new puppy. It was very friendly and very helpful, and so appropriate to raising happy healthy dogs. This book is timeless. I can't wait to read it again.
Every first time puppy owner should have this book........1998-11-22
This is the first of what is now have a whole shelf full of dog books, and it is still my all-time favorite puppy raising book. It was a wonderful book to have handy while raising my first puppy, and I used it a lot. The training information and common problems section is quite good. I really like thier information on choosing a dog, and if you should even have one. It's a very understandable, and easy to use introduction to responsible dog ownership and how to have a happy, healthy puppy, all written in a very friendly tone. It gave me a great foundation to help my now adult dog be such a wonderful, very well behaved dog, and the envy of other dog owners.
best puppy raising book ever!.......1998-09-29
We used this book to train our puppy almost 6 years ago. today she is known all over the neighborhood as the best, most sweetest dog ever! Believe me, she didn't come that way!

Good Book.......2007-08-13
Nice book, but lacks plans how to build some simple engines. Great info, and history, but I wanted one with complete plans for a solar Sterling and plans on a larger functional sterling in detail. This book is for a great introduction into the hot air engines. I would recomend it for an introduction to hot engines. But if you are looking for a book to invent or make one, then look elseware.

Great for the novice.......2006-01-17
This book, of the 3 I purchased, is the one I refer to most often. It has detailed descirptions of each tree along wiht detailed instructions on care for the tree including maintenance, repotting, propagation, etc. Very easy to understand and has answered the vast majority of my questions.
Great How To Manual for Beginners.......2000-08-19
Paul Lesniewicz describes the bonsai art with simplicist and skill. This book is full of wonderful photos and great advise.
Good book.......2000-07-09
This book says everything from how to care for your bonsai, to how to grow bonsai from cuttings and seeds. This is a great book for beginners as well as the experinced grower.
Good book for beginners........1999-06-16
This book helped me a lot in deciding which tree to grow and maintain. This book had drawings and pictures that assisted me in pruning, wiring, and the transplanting of my tree.
The title is a little misleading........1999-02-17
While this book does stress the main idea of indoor growing, it doesn't help when the author tells us to move the plant outdoors in the spring. The lighting requirement for each species is really helpful and the photos are beautiful. The illustrations make repotting easier to do (you can see how the tree is tied to the pot). The care is detailed and quick since you can see at a glance how much watering is needed or when to propagate.n

Book Description
Noted bonsai artist Herb Gustafson provides advice on styling your tree with confidence and creativity. All the major styles are covered as he shows how to bring out the tree's essential trunk inclinations. Each style comes with its own methods about how to train, including pruning with the pinch-and-grow technique, training with wire, and container considerations, (knowing when it's time to transplant, and then what to do). 112 pages (all in color), 6 1/4 x 10 1/4.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe the wrong title........2001-02-28
The title to this book might suggest that it is a practical guide to technique. Only the last 13 pages, however, are actually about technique. The first 94 pages explore each of the major bonsai styles, with careful attention being given to design considerations based on comparisons to trees in nature. As such, the book is less about "keeping" your bonsai perfectly shaped as it is about planning for its shape in the first place.
My more serious criticism about this book is that the photographs (especially the author's nature shots) are small and, in some cases poorly reproduced. I found it frequently difficult to convince myself that I could see what the author wanted me to see. Many of the photographs are not referenced in the text, and some of the references appear to be wrong.
All in all, however, it is a good book value and provides a detailed examination of bonsai styling.
Helpful Design Strategies.......2000-06-25
This book focuses on design strategies for bonsai enthusiasts. It is a wonderful, brief read. Photographs of natural-setting trees were poor, however, especially printed as they are in very small format. Photos of private bonsai trees were excellent. A good place to start for strategy in design.
Not bad for "General Knowledg", but lacking in content.......2000-06-25
I found this book to fair well in the category of "General Knowledge", but thought it needed a little more content. I now know all the different styles and basic wiring techniques but fail to find many of the pitfalls to training in some of the harsher styles.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a novice and lacks general knowledge, but would warn that there is much more to learn before attempting to train a bonsai tree.

Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.

Lacking clear, precise presentation and missing some shrubs!.......2003-04-08
I bought this book to get ideas on shrubs, and it has a lot of choices, but it lacks the best choices for evergreens like Lorapetalum & Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo). A southern shrub planting must have plants like these that provide evergreen fullness and color! More importantly it lacks clarity --- it just rambles on from one page to the next with no page breaks from one shrub to the next, and the main info you need to know about a shrub is either hard to find or non-existant. I recommend buying Taylor's 50 Best Shrubs for anyone, beginner or pro, and forget this one.
Ideal for any gardening or landscaper reference shelf.......2001-08-11
Flowering shrubs can bring color, variety, and beauty to any garden, large of small, complex or simple. Profusely enhanced with color photography, Botanica's 100 Best Flowering Shrubs For Your Garden describes one hundred of the most popular flowering shrubs readily available to today's gardener, along with information on their botanical and common names, preparation, planing, hardiness zones, and care. An ideal addition to any gardening or landscaper reference shelf, Botanica's 100 Best Flowering Shrubs For Your Garden is further buttressed with a informative introduction, zone maps, and a useful index.

Marilu Henner, costar of the TV sitcom Taxi turned bestselling self-help author, has a strong message for doting parents: stop spoiling your children. Many of today's moms and dads confuse placating with loving, spurred by a desire to give their kids the world on a silver platter. Cowritten by Henner (mother of two boys) and her personal psychoanalyst Dr. Ruth Sharon, I Refuse to Raise a Brat explores the long-term effects of overgratifying youngsters and offers a wealth of situational advice.
Henner and Sharon theorize that a child's ability to balance independence and cooperation directly results from the parent-child relationship; too much negotiation, too many toys, exaggerated praise, and overprotection do not help that child in the long run. Instead of learning compliance, the child will learn that everything is open to discussion; in place of gratitude, the child learns greed (either physical greed for more "stuff" or emotional greed for more of the spotlight); and instead of feeling safe, the child will learn helplessness.
The women incorporate a question/answer style throughout their book's 12 somewhat disjointed chapters. Questions such as "Our 18-month old wakes up at five every morning and then he wants to play. What do I do?" receive a practical two- to four-sentence response from Dr. Sharon (Answer: "Don't blame your baby.... If he gets nine or ten hours' sleep, he has every right to wake up at 5 a.m.") Then Marilu responds--sometimes serious, often with a humorous anecdote or one-liner, or at times with a completely unrelated comment. Perhaps not the most authoritative resource, this book will still please, inform, and strike familiar chords in parents who seek nonphysical ways to gain and keep respect. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
Parents often inadvertently confuse love with overindulgence. They don't want their children to suffer a moment of frustration or be deprived of any desire. But in truth, a balance of frustration tolerance and gratification is necessary to become a resilient and responsible adult.
Of course, every child is difficult on occasion, but true brats are constantly selfish, demanding, and incapable of listening. Their parents must regularly plead, cajole, and bargain with them to exert some control. So what makes a child become a brat in the first place? And what can a parent do--or not do--to keep their children from becoming brats?
Since being a mother is her most important role, renowned actress Marilu Henner has often turned to Dr. Ruth Sharon, a highly respected psychoanalyst, for advice on raising her own children. Together, in I Refuse to Raise a Brat, they have created a practical and accessible guidebook based on Dr. Sharon's fundamental observation: Adults with the greatest emotional difficulties were generally overgratified, overprotected, and overindulged as children.
Filled with answers to real-life questions, practical advice, and humorous anecdotes, I Refuse to Raise a Brat is a witty and uniquely helpful resource to help parents raise secure and self-reliant children.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing & Honest Advice often hurts.......2007-10-11
I am also not surprised by all the negative reviews. I picked this book up when my daughter was 2 and I was having a really difficult time raising her. If you can read this book without dissecting every little piece of it I think you will find some very good, easy-to-follow advice. The book also breaks up into sections where it shows different and sometimes difficult situations which every parent encounters with their child. Each way it shows you a way to resolve these conflicts-- it is so useful. Reading how to do something is useful-but applying it to everyday situations is gold. Parents have a right to pick and choose which conflicts they are going to relate to the book and which solutions to incorporate in their own life. I did this with my own daughter, and although hard at times (which always is-rearing a child especially at this age) I get parents who tell me all the time how well behaved and happy my daughter is. We are very close too and she knows she is very loved. I agree that rules are lacking in society and parents are to blame for letting their kids be the ones in control and dictate their parents. Henner gives us some simple tools that we, as parents, can choose to use. She gets 2 thumbs up from me as a satisfied parent. By the way, I was 23 when I read this book (now 30) and didn't even know who Henner was. Good old fashioned parenting is still IN as far as I'm concerned.
Not very good advice.......2007-06-14
...in fact, some of these things are borderline abusive.
Psychology studies have shown (*exhaustively*) that the strict-parent model doesn't work. Others, such as James Dobson, call this the punishing father model. They result in children who can't tell parents the truth, who learn to be manipulative, and in fact grow up to be abusive (emotionally or physically).
Much better books are: Reviving Ophelia (a classic), anything by Alice Miller (one of the best post-Freudian psychologists alive today), and anything by Anne Wilson Schaeff.
Not quite up to standard.......2006-10-27
Although there are already a number of reviews on this book, I felt the need to "thumbs-up" the ones that offer concern over it. Why is that people who are on TV or in movies suddenly can be authors and experts on unrelated topics in which they have no formal education?? Marilu has written some interesting and thought provoking books on health (I have read all of them) but to move into the arena of parenting is questionable. The overall theme is good - raise kids to be respectful, not bratty, hard workers and so on. But the one size fits all approach and harsh ideas such as saying it is a great idea to work long hours as it shows a good work ethic - then adding that children remember that more than how much time you spend with them in the long run is really something...excuse me??? I don't agree with that at all. While there definitely needs to be a balance, being there for your kids and working less hours to do so when needed IS a good idea in the long run, and most kids WILL remember that, not that they rarely saw you due to long hours at the office or something. Stick with level-headed advice from Sears, Rosemond, Leman and the like. On a final note, let's not forget that sometimes people's personal experiences need to be taken into consideration when they offer advice. For example, you wouldn't take health advice from a medical doctor who smokes, is obese and eats junk food all day, right? So I am not sure I can take family advice from Marilu who has been twice-divorced, is now remarried (and claims "this is for life" as she has before), is openly proud of her promiscuity through the years and works long hours away from her kids. That's just me though...
Don't give in and be consistent.......2005-07-27
That's the whole point of this book. I have loved Marilu's previous works, but this isn't one of her best. Not much here to sink your teeth into.
This book made me so mad!.......2005-03-14
So much in this book reminded of the way our great grandparents raised kids, with that 'children are to be seen, not heard' type of attitude. It left a really bad taste in my mouth for so many reasons.
Marilu Henner is one huge contradiction. In this book she says she got an award from LLL (which is true,. I am an LLL leader, and I checked that fact) BUT she goes on to say that there is no reason to breastfeed a 3 year old, and that if they are thirsty, they can drink from a cup.
She talks about how nursing at 1 year is beneficial, but she neglects to mention that nursing at 3 is JUST as good. It's recommended (by all medical and health organizations ) that children nurse *at least* two years, and then as longer after that as both mother and child want.
Some other things that annoyed were written by the co author, this Dr. Sharon chick seems to blame every marital problem on children. If you pay too much attention to your child then your husband will resent the child..if you breastfeed too long then your husband will resent the child, if you co sleep, then your husband will resent your child. oh my gawd the woman is a quack.
