Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good information.......2007-09-29

A great book for goat beginners-- lots of good, practical information. However, it does not seem geared toward those not pursuing the natural/organic approach to farming/livestock rearing, which we are. We're glad to have this book as a reference. But we are also glad to have a great friend who has been naturally/organically raising dairy goats for three decades as a good, solid resource for our "natural" questions.

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-09-22

Good and reliable information. If you are looking for an all around book that accurately covers the bases, than this is it.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2007-08-03

We were looking for information about goats. Milk is something we still buy from grocery stores and the possibility of making our own dairy products was interesting enough to look into. Not knowing anything about goats, we had to start somewhere.

I read the reviews below, and this looked like a good place to start. I can agree with much of what has been said by earlier reviewers, but still found this book to be worth the price and time to read. Yeah, it's not exhaustive - but I wasn't looking for the only reference on goats I'd ever need. It is directed towards dairy, rather than meat, and the information on handling milk and arranging work areas was useful. There was some discussion of the business aspects of dairy goats. A profitable business can require some hard decisions and callouse handling of livestock. These may not be some of the more pleasant aspects of raising livestock, but the author did not devote a tremendous amount of print to that aspect.

If you haven't raised goats and think there may be some possibilities, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2007-05-11

This is a great book for the beginner, like me. It touches on everything from A-Z and I can't believe how much I learned from 1 book. It is an easy read, has a great glossary. I feel like when I buy my first goats, I'll know better what to look for & how to prepare for them.

5 out of 5 stars Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats.......2007-04-04

Probably the best investment for a new dairy goat owner or anyone considering owning a dairy goat. Lots of information on different breeds, housing, health problems, and general information. This long time favorite and backyard goat owners handbook has stood the test of time with good reason.

5 out of 5 stars The Fabrication of Farmstead Goat Cheese.......2005-03-04

Jean-Claude Le Jaouen is one of the worlds foremost experts on goat cheese. He is the head of the goat cheese research section of the Institut Technique De L'Elevage Ovin Et Caprin which is headquartered in Paris
This book is one of the best written on the production of lactic cheese from goats but this is not the only audience that could gain from it's contents. He covers milk and the basic process of cheese making in such simplicity yet detail that every cheese maker should own this book.

The Content is quite clear with the simplest of organization

He begins the book with a bit about historical cheese in France and where it is at today with the emphasis on farmstead.

"remember this well: farmstead cheeses are always
made from raw milk, they are the true product of the land"
    Pierre Androuet

He follows this with a discussion of milk and what to expect for quality from the different animals. Also what problems may occur, why they occur and what remedies can be taken

The next section deals with (and this is for all cheesemakers) a discussion of the principals of cheese making. Here he covers not only the various stages of converting milk to curd but the differences between lactic, rennet, and mixed curd cheese which is one of the best explanations of this I have seen. He compares and contrasts natural vs commercial starters and goes into quite a bit of detail on rennet.. What it is and how it works. This is all followed by good explanation of the curd: it's moulding draining and preparing for the aging room. This is all accompanied with photographs to give a good visual sense of the process.

The book then goes on to cover the making (including recipes) for 3 quite different cheeses with an emphasis on proper draining, drying and affinage (aging). He follows by describing very specific needs for the aging room and also what can go wrong here and how to correct it. He also has an entire section on considerations for building a dairy space.

He finishes the book with the last chapter 'A Dictionary of Goat Cheeses' which can be used as a valuable tool in deciding on the cheese you would like to make.

All in All, if you don't have this book .. Get It !

...I find it in most all libraries of the good cheese makers I know

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2004-03-23

This is the first book I read after finding about my son's condition. It will not help you to find the "cure" or "treatment" for your child. It will help you cope & understand.

2 out of 5 stars Never see Bonnie in a prom gown?.......2004-02-11

I was annoyed by the story of the man who was sobbing because he "realized he'd never see Bonnie (daughter) in a prom gown." Though Bonnie had Down syndrome, she would most likely be able to attend a prom if she chose-- most schools that have ANY type of teenagers in them have proms!

5 out of 5 stars After The Tears Is A Must Read!.......2002-06-30

I have worked with individuals experiencing disabilties and their families for several years. After The Tears is an honest, informative and poignant collection of experiences of families whose lives have been changed by a family member with a disability. This is a great resource for families and a MUST read for professionals and para professionals. It has raised my awareness and reminded me of both the strength and fragility of the families and individuals whom I have served.

5 out of 5 stars after the tears.......2001-10-21

I am a parent of a child with a disability. This book was wonderfully written. It expressed many of the feelings I had when my child was born. I realized I am not alone. I have read many books about coping and this is the best one by far. It is also an easy read. I read it in one night.

                5 out of 5 stars Understanding Disabilities.......2000-09-11

I am a teacher who has never had a child with disabilities. This book really helped me understand what the parents of my students are going through. It is a great book for new parents or friends of parents with a baby with disabilities of any kind.
