              Book Description

How to keep any garden looking its best, through the seasons and through the years.

Gardening is the primary recreational activity of Americans. Since the 1980s, when gardening caught fire as a national passion, we have spent billions of dollars on what we grow for our own pleasure; and in all that time, not one book has been published on the broad subject of garden maintenance.

For twenty-five years, the Haywards, expert horticultural consultants and authors of many books and articles, have been tending their own garden in Vermont. Here, beautiful photographs illustrate how and what the Haywards do in their garden from earliest spring until snowfall: pruning trees and shrubs; planting, staking, and dividing perennials; and edging, deadheading, and weeding. They also include many tips for reducing maintenance. Their advice can be put to work in the reader's garden, regardless of size or location. Line drawings by Elayne Sears give more details on specific techniques. Anecdotal, encouraging, and crammed with information, this is a gorgeous treatment of a very practical subject. 237 photographs, 16 drawings.

              Book Description

Most gardeners want their borders to be interesting and colorful over a long season, even year-round if winters are not too severe. With this book, Christopher Lloyd shows how he chooses and orchestrates plants so that the borders always look their best. Once having covered the principles of succession planting, Lloyd explores the ingredients necessary to ensure continuously lively borders — from anchor plants and permanent perennials to drop-in plants and self-sowers. Packed with fresh ideas and practical advice for every season, Succession Planting contains all the information you need to create brilliantly successful year-round planting schemes.

              5 out of 5 stars Unattainable Beauty!.......2005-11-28

Succession Planting for Year-round Pleasure is a fantastic book by Christopher Lloyd, who has previously written quite a few, which are also excellent. The photos are among the most beautiful I have ever seen, and I give this book my highest honors. But perhaps it deserves some demerit on the grounds of impracticality or even depressing unattainability.

For one thing, Lloyd's long border at his estate at Great Dixter is 200 feet by 15 feet, so many of the effects which he finds practical are not possible in any garden likely to be owned by the bourgeoisie. Further, he gardens in England in perhaps the equivalent to Zone 8. Despite this, he is always looking to push the limits of hardiness with exotic plants. And outside of Britain and coastal Oregon and Washington, there is virtually nowhere in the English-speaking world where the winters are so mild, and yet the summers are not too hot for many of his plants.

So taken altogether, in any combination of 3 plants you might consider, it's a safe bet that 1 of them either can't be grown in your location, or will require extraordinary levels of coddling to get through the winter. At some level there's nothing wrong with that; who hasn't at least considered growing Dahlias or Gladioli, which must be dug up, but can then be stored in most basements? However, his planting schemes are more labor intensive than this. The semi-hardy and tropical plants he loves must be dug up, or have cuttings taken, and many are wintered under glass; to do this for all of his many varied plants, he apparently has at least 3 different temperatures in his greenhouses or cold frames.

Normal (i.e., not superhuman) gardeners use biennials and short-lived perennials (the ones which seed themselves to death) such as Lupines, many Dianthus, Digitalis (foxglove) and Lychnis coronaria, as relatively easy self-sowers, performing enough dead-heading to keep seedlings to a modest level, and hopefully to keep the mother plant alive as well. For Lloyd and his head gardener, Fergus Garrett, the chosen method for all of these but the Lychnis (rose campion) is generally to sow seeds in summer, pot them up and put in a cold frame in October, bed out the next April or May, then rip out the plants as soon as their blooms have faded. Naturally his Lupines make mine look diseased. Damn him to hell and all that. For fuzzy-leaved Verbascums, which he winters in their final positions, he actually suspends a plate of glass over their crowns to keep them dry so they don't rot!

All that said, his plant combinations are exquisite, and many of them are obtainable by most gardeners in temperate climates. More important, the principles he espouses, the color combinations, and the methods of succession among broad types of plants, are all transferable to less intensive methods, or to other plants which are more practical for your situation. Further, I defy anyone to read this book without discovering several new plants he will plan to try out. I am made newly aware especially of several with true- and deep-blue flowers. Buy or borrow this book, but also consider his older books, "The Adventurous Gardener" and "The Well-Tempered Garden." They have essentially no illustrations, but a wealth of cultural information and design ideas and critiques of many plants and cultivars.

              5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-04-06

Normally I don't get into gardening books...I'm a sucker for the pictures, but find the text boring.

This book however has been so fun to read -- and, yes the pictures are beautiful. It helps create a garden for each season, and it shows photos from the same garden each season. I've just planted based on some ideas in this book, so I guess I'll need to report back how it works out.

Scented Containers comes to us from the garden author Sue Fisher (also known from radio and TV) who began writing following a career in the nursery and garden-center business.

In the modern world, visual images and technology tend to dominate, so that sight and sound become the chief senses, leaving smell lurking in the background. This is a shame, especially where gardening is concerned, as scent is often the most delightful of the pleasures that plants and flowers offer. This book sets out to redress this imbalance by showing how plants with scented flowers or aromatic foliage can be easily grown in portable containers to give ever-changing, year-round enjoyment in different positions in the garden. Whether you are new to gardening or are a seasoned gardener looking for fresh ideas, you will find an abundance of information here, ranging from which plants to choose and how to grow them to tips, projects, and seasonal reminders offering encouragement to gardeners of all abilities.

The text is clearly set out, straightforward, easy to follow, and liberally interspersed with truly magnificent color photographs, watercolors, and black-and-white diagrams. Of particular interest are the projects, the most glorious of which is the creation of a fragrant evening garden. Others include making herb hanging baskets and constructing and growing a cone of spring bulbs. The book concludes with a comprehensive directory of scented plants and herbs for easy reference, containing practical information on how to plant and care for your containers in order to obtain maximum results with minimum work. Scented Containers succeeds in providing fragrant inspiration for any gardener. --Susan Naylor

Ketzel Levine is known nation-wide as the Doyenne of Dirt, thanks to her regular gardening chats with the horticulturally challenged Scott Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition. Plant This! is a collection of Levine's 100 best recommendations, drawn from her weekly plant profile columns in the Portland (Oregon) Oregonian. Like many a gardening tome, Levine's covers perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. But unlike the prose in most other gardening references, her writing is more than engaging--it's fun. Sure, she tells you the botanical name for each of the plants, but she also explains how to pronounce it (so Arisaema sounds like "Pasadena," and Enkianthus sounds like "send me Kansas"). She also lists the basic needs for each (for jack-in-the-pulpit, this includes part shade, humus-rich soil, good drainage, and human blood) plus its worst enemies (for the magnolia, this is overwatering and excessive shade, while for sumac it's its own greed).

These plant profiles are organized by season, they're accompanied by unusually nice illustrations (courtesy of René Eisenbart), and they include wonderful snippets of entertaining information, such as the fact that Euphorbia (common name: spurge) was well known to both the Oubangu tribes of the Congo and the citizens of Julius Caesar's Rome, and story about the iris, which was named after the Greek goddess Iris, who traveled so far, she "picked up rainbow pieces on the soles of her feet, so that wherever she walked on earth, her footprints bore flowers in all the colors of the rainbows she traveled."

What other wise, pragmatic, reliable garden reference books include such enjoyable reading? Levine's Plant This! is an exceptional find, a gardening book that's at home on your coffee table as well as in the dirt and mulch of your garden. --Stephanie Gold

                        Book Description

In her inimitable style--smart, smart-alecky, and seriously enthusiastic--Ketzel Levine describes her favorite plants: those that offer outstanding color, fragrance, form, and performance in the garden.

Known as "The Doyenne of Dirt" on NPR's "Weekend Edition," Ketzel Levine has a national reputation for unabashed gardening advice. Drawn from her popular column in "The Oregonian," here are Levine's 100 recommendations for the best perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. With gorgeous watercolor illustrations of every plant, this book constitutes the ultimate gardener's shopping list! Levine reveals whats so special about her picks, along with advice on how to keep them happy. So whether it is clematis cirrhosa (sounds like "feminist mimosa") or ophiopogon (rhymes with "sophie showed logan"), these plants are the best of the best, served up with a whole lot of attitude.

2 out of 5 stars I love Ketsel, but the book is just ok.......2007-06-18

There were several things that Ms Levine didn't consider, she should have, I think, said she was really focused on gardens for our region, (I live in Seattle) but didn't seem to take into account some v. troublesome plants that have included on the noxious or obnoxious (a real list!) weed list with the state. Budalia (butterfly bush) for instance. The other concern I had was the inputs needed for some of the suggested plants. I would strongly suggest Mary Robson's two books on gardening for Oregon and Washington, both Month-By-Month Gardening in Washington & Oregon: What To Do Each Month To Have A Beautiful Garden All Year (Month-By-Month Gardening in Washington & Oregon)Washington & Oregon Gardener's Guide
In her books she considers the inputs that will be required by the gardener, easy of growing, water use, design considerations, they are both good guides for beginning and advanced gardeners.

5 out of 5 stars If you live in the Pacific Northwest.......2007-06-10

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, and if your character has been developed by an unremitting rainfall that blots out the sun all winter and even soaks the Portland Rose Parade in early June, and if you know a gardener who has not read this book, and if you have not shared your enthusiasm about this book with them, do so now. But wait -- if you don't know who Ketzel Levine is, tell them about this book after you've read it, and after you've read Levine's columns in the Oregonian, and after you've heard her talk to T.C. Boyle talk about his garden on NPR, in her series on celebrity gardens.

Although I've been writing about gardens for 20 years, my ignorance was vast and cherished, until I read this book. For the first time, I understand a little about the plants that surround me. Humor is a valuable communication tool, and Ketzel Levine has learned how to use it as a carrier wave. I haven't had this much fun since I read The Egg and I.

It's not too early to consider this book as an ideal holiday gift, six months from now. I ran across my first copy in Powell's, and was transfixed: THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW. My girlfriend is getting a copy this week, and she'll adore it.

Best of all, it seems to be undiscovered. A lot of people haven't read it yet; have been doing an informal survey of fellow and sister gardeners and garden-magazine editors, and only a few have read it. It should be on every gardener's bookshelf.

                        2 out of 5 stars It's an opinion list........2001-05-15

It's hard to rate an opinion based on accuracy, so I'm rating this book on usefulness and general appeal.

In terms of general appeal, I have two major objections to this book:

One, it is heavily biased to woodland and foliage plants. This is fine to a point, but to bill it as "best bets for year-round gorgeous gardens" I think is misleading. We are talking about plantings where shape and texture dominate, and that is a rather specialized gardening challenge.

Two, this book is very region-specific in terms of the plants covered. The author and I both live in Zone 8, but she lives in the Pacific Northwest, while I live on the Atlantic Seaboard. The upshot of this is that, despite 5 years in the nursery business, I have never seen a great many of the plants in this book. They can, theoretically, be grown here, but good luck laying your hands on them. Mail order catalogs can solve this problem, but it is something to remember when considering this book.

In terms of usefulness, this is, as I've said, an opinion-based book. It's usefulness will be limited to how closely your opinions on what makes for a "gorgeous" garden matches hers. Do you prefer subtle presentation or ostentation? Will you take the time to appreciate small beauties, and do you have the patience and skill to bring those features out in such a way that those less experienced will be able to find them? Not my call; just remember that this book is about small details. A considerable part of each two page entry is devoted to making the case for _why_ a given specimen should be considered beautiful.

The long and the short of it is that this book is not for beginners. Nor, I think, is it a particularly good introduction to the more advanced forms of plantings. Overall I found that I either knew the plant to begin with (in which case I already had an opinion and didn't need hers), or the information provided --while detailed-- did not adequately convey to me the appearance of the plant. Unfortunate, since it is a book about selection, with relatively little to say about cultivation.

2 out of 5 stars Plant this-- and watch it die........2001-03-16

This book should come with a cautionary note: the author is a smug zone-8 gardener; unless you are in the Pacific Northwest, this book is useless as a gardening guide. Moreover, the author does not include USDA hardiness zones in the description, perhaps instead of the cutesy "sounds like" guide to pronouncing the latin name ("Epimedium" sounds like "stop the tedium".) Perhaps it did not occur to her that people from other regions of the country would read this book. For those of us outside the Pacific Northwest, this book should have been called "Plant this-- and watch it die." The illustrations are lovely, but the author's affected folksiness (most egregious example so far: "Yup") make this an extremely annoying read.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations, overly talky text.......2001-03-14

I once took a friend to a beautiful wild garden that had been planted (over many years) incredibly well. Since she is a fan of plants and gardens I had hoped that we could walk the grounds - quietly and appreciatively. Instead my friend chattered incessantly for the entire hour and a half we were there. Each plant provoked a monologue: anecdotes, jokes, asides, and factual material in an ultimately maddening cacophonous symphony. This book had the same effect on me. You are awed by the quiet beauty of Rene Eisenbart's paintings, you know that the plants described are great, but the text is so talky as to be distracting - and even annoying. If you enjoy a lot of off-topic opinions and chat about all sorts of things, then this is the book for you. If you want to study and enjoy beautiful plants in a quieter frame of mind, look elsewhere.

Previously published in two separate volumes (Summer Garden Glory and Winter Garden Glory), this book shows the author's six-acre private garden, Foggy Bottom, throughout the year. It demonstrates the appeal and interest provided by successful plant associations and illustrates many of the varieties developed by the world-famous Blooms of Bressingham nursery that are becoming increasingly available in the U.S.

                            Book Description

This manual is the only book designed for both residential and non-residential parents. Formatted and printed in a back-to-back manner, the book encourages both sides to understand the other's point of view, and so enables both parents to make the most of time spent with the children.

How To Parent with Your Ex provides support for the difficult situation the non-residential parent is in and practical, to-the-point advice about how to reap the most benefits from the visitation time available. Conversely, it addresses the role of the residential parent and the need to understand the changing relationships the child is going through. By focusing on the child, both parents are able to solidify a special relationship with the child and maintain necessary, positive communication with the ex-spouse.

Appendices for this text include various parenting organizations, publication resources, related websites and sample visitation plans and schedules.

This is down to earth, in the trenches, real life advice you can really use about how to parent with your ex after divorce. There are lots of books about getting through a divorce, but this book is the one that you will use in the years after your divorce. The author gives good advice and is really honest.
