5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and a good read too!.......2003-08-11

Of all the Carolyne Roehm books, this set is my favorite. It had some practical gardening tips as well as the flower arrangements and recipes. If you are expecting a gardening "how to" book, this is not the one. However, the books are beautiful and I enjoyed each one. It gave me many ideas for my own home. I will never have a budget that allows me to purchase 12 dozen roses for one display, however, many of her ideas can be implemented on a smaller scale with less expensive florals. The color combinations were inspiring as well as the examples of matching floral displays to the surroundings. If you love flowers and beautiful table scapes, you will love this book.

"Autumn is a season that lures us indoors, and shifts our focus from the garden, the pool, or the beach to the home." The magic and mystique of the fall season are splendidly captured in Carolyn Roehm's Fall Notebook: Garden, Hearth, Tradition, Home, a collection of recipes, crafts, entertainment tips, and garden projects. In her introduction to the book, Roehm--former fashion designer turned author--writes,
As a gardener, I feel a certain sadness as I am forced to break a bond that I have spent the spring and summer nurturing. Although it is easy for one to become nostalgic during this time, it is necessary to move forward because it is crucial to prepare for the long winter that lies ahead ... although those beautiful blooms are a long way off and we must put our garden to bed, we shift to a new buzz of life that is brought about by the gathering of family and friends under one roof for the holidays.

Arranged by individual plants--dahlias and chrysanthemums can be counted on for their late-fall showiness--as well as specific projects and festivities, including Halloween, bulb planting, and Thanksgiving, each chapter offers a host of ideas for savoring autumn's flavor through arts and crafts projects, practical gardening tips, succulent recipes, and creative entertaining advice. Celebrate Turkey day in style with elegant place cards--easily created with a rubber stamp and ecru stationary--that compliment lemon leaf, eucalyptus berry, and autumn-hued rose table arrangements, while a menu of poisson with rosemary and sage, potato and parsnip purée, and pumpkin soufflé--all clearly spelled out in Roehm's meticulous recipes--would make any family thankful. With full-color photographs, pockets for storing ideas and graph paper for planning--not to mention useful lists to help you organize events and gardening chores--the Fall Notebook is as glorious to look at as it is practical to use.

Exactly the book I was looking for - great photos, good hints, clear explanations. A pleasure for the eyes!

    3 out of 5 stars More a look at a socialite's lifestyle.......2000-08-18

As is true with all four books in this series, this "notebook" is beautifully photographed. Ms. Roehm's series does not offer much depth in any of the "categories" covered in the book-- gardening, hearth (whatever that is), etc. but does demonstrate her truly beautiful design sense, especially in floral arranging. The spiral-bound format, including pockets for the reader's own clippings, and the many blank pages for the reader's own notes are more gimmicky than helpful, and take up lots of space in an already "lightweight" effort. Unlike the Martha Stewart books, against which these are positioned, Ms. Roehm's books do not offer the detailed "how-to" approach of Ms. Stewart's excrutiatingly detailed tomes, but are more a peek into Ms. Roehm's perfectionist lifestyle, which is very entertaining in itself. With many, many references to her home, affectedly titled "Weatherstone", Ms. Roehm's books are more a "season" in the life of a newly monied socialite than an expert's teachings. However, all said, Ms. Roehm's text demonstrates a quick wit and a somewhat self-deprecating style, which when combined with the almost desperate desire to impress the reader with the elegance of 'ole "Weatherstone", makes one see her as a charming, insecure, vulnerable, and very talented woman. The four "notebooks" left me wanting to see more photographs of her exquisite designs, less from her as an "expert", and gave me the impression that I would like to learn more about her journey post-divorce from Henry Kravis, and post-clothing design business. An expert she ain't, but an interesting woman, most certainly.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, extravagant photography.......2000-02-08

I love Fall -- it's my favorite season, so I wanted to love this book. I wasn't disappointed! The photos are sumptuous and gorgeous; the recipes are yummy and inspire thoughts of running straight to the kitchen; and the information about the flowers was truly informative. If you love Fall, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Martha!.......1999-12-21

After years of searching through craft, decorating and gardening magazines and books, I finally found Martha (Stewart, that is). I never thought I could find another resource as innovative as her until I discovered Carolyn Roehm's seasons notebooks. The fall notebook is truly exciting. This is a book of inspiration, leading you to put your own spin on new ideas with halloween, thanksgiving, food, flowers, decorations and general entertaining and homekeeping. With help from the Fall Notebook, I designed the floral topiary centerpieces for my wedding. Her book also provided inspiration for the guests gifts and other personal touches.

Carolyn's book does provide some recipes (great ones!) and directions, but with a notebook-style format (complete with ring binder and pockets as well as a lay-flat design) and large, gorgeous photos, this book serves as a starting point... a chance to get those creative juices flowing.

You have to see it to believe it... Carolyn Roehm's got Martha beat!

        5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2007-09-10

Highly recommend this book for anyone looking to grow anything in dry climates, whether you are a 'newbie' or not. Pictures and write-ups are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, but a bit daunting.......2007-06-12

This is one of two gardening books we bought after moving to Arizona two years ago; the other is "Arizona Gardener's Guide" by Mary Irish. Of the two, this is probably the more informative, but the wealth of information it contains is not presented in the most user-friendly way. Plants are listed using their proper botanical names (i.e. in Latin) rather than the common names that most people are likely to be familiar with. The photography is first-rate, and the "how to" explanations are mostly clear and easy to follow. If you live in Arizona, and only want to buy one book, I'd recommend the Arizona Gardener's Guide, as it is AZ-specific. If you live outside Arizona, this is probably the better choice -- although you might want to buy both, as they have different strengths.

i live in Arizona, and knowing what kinds of plants to plant here and how they are to be taken care of is important..so that is why i needed this book...and it is very informative..thank...

5 out of 5 stars Great Desert Landscaping.......2006-02-17

This is a great book for the desert landscaper. I live in the big bend area of Texas and have been looking for something like this for a long time. It's easy to read, lets you know what elevation, rainfall, water needs, sun etc. that particular plant need to thrive. It's written so the lay person can understand it with just the amount of information for gardner/lanscaper needs. Has been a big help in finishing up landscaping projects I've been doing and on the projects I am starting.

2 out of 5 stars Plants for Warm and Dry Climates.......2004-04-13

Although this book supposedly covers my region of New Mexico, I found so little in it that applied to me that I am returning it. Three-fourths of the book is a plant reference, and most of the plants are not cold hardy below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, making about half the book wasted paper as far as I am concerned. Also, a lot of xeric standards for this region are missing.

If you can, check the map on pages 2-3 to make sure that you live in the Low or Middle regions (as I write this, the map is included in the scanned pages here on Amazon, but isn't displaying properly). For the High region, I recommend instead any of the books by Judith Phillips, who writes toward climates that are slightly wetter and somewhat cooler than the ones that are the focus here.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good selection guide for finding roses.......2003-10-04

Taylor's Guides are popular tools for plant selection and this revised edition is no exception. The size of the new edition is a little larger than the old one but it is still a comfortable size for reading in bed or taking with you to the nursery. 380 roses are covered here, from all rose classes. 200+ pages are glossy and contain a color photograph of each rose. The gallery is followed by an "encyclopedia of roses" which gives basic information about growing the rose and how best to use it in the garden. A brief introduction covers the basics of buying roses, growing and caring for them. A chart is also included which explains pest and diseases and offers ecologically safe controls.

This is a good guide but if you are seeking a book that is more comprehensive and includes a larger selection of roses, you might want to check out "Botanica's Roses" by William Grant. This book includes over 2000 roses and is priced similarly. Also, the just released "American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses" is also outstanding but much higher in price.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine book indeed!.......2003-03-08

This book has lovely photographs, good descriptions of the plant, and suggestions on how to use particular rose varieties in your landscape. It is written with enthusiasm and is a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars The joys and aches of gardening distilled.......2007-04-19

As the former tender of a very large garden, I can personally attest to the wisdom contained in the phrases in this book. It is easy for gardening to become a religion, the quality and appearance of your garden becomes more important that your own appearance. The dirt on your hands, the creak in your knees and the selective wear on your clothes all become badges of honor to you.
My favorite phrase in the book was, "Gardeners relax by doing hard work." That is so true, there is no better way of burning off the stress of your job than gardening to the point where standing up takes a major effort. If you have ever been bitten by the gardening bug, then you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the Author on TV.......2003-02-02

I saw Beverly Rose Hopper on TV discussing roses, so I figured she must be a real gardener expert. Beverly Hopper was also very humorous, so I bought this book, and I was not disappointed.

Beverly Rose Hopper is an expert on roses, and knows how to bring humor into the gardening world as well.

You can't go wrong with this book. How Does Your Garden Grow? makes a great gift for yourself or the gardener in your life.

                5 out of 5 stars Gardener's Have a Sense of Humor Too!.......2003-01-31

Gardeners will love the humor in this book. Non-gardeners will laugh at the foibles that keep the gardener in their lives busy.

5 out of 5 stars Your Garden Grows With Humor.......2002-12-10

"Gardeners relax by doing hard work." Just one of the many quotes by Beverly Rose Hopper that are so true in this pocket size book. "A garden grows with love." "Give to the earth and it will give to you." This book is thoughtfully written and is a gardener's joy. Thank you Beverly Rose Hopper!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Stocking Stuffer for the Gardener.......2002-12-10

Written by someone you can tell is an avid gardener, I bought "How Does Your Garden Grow" for my mother, and she just loved it! She is a gardener also, and could relate to the wit and humor Beverly Rose Hopper shares in this book.

                      Book Description

Voted "Teacher of the Year" by The Austism Society of America, Toni Flowers has more than twenty years of experience teaching individuals with autism. She believes all children benefit from art because it encourages creativity. As a result, children with autism may find a form of expression when they've been handicapped by delayed and/or disturbed language skills and/or abnormal sensory responses. Reaching the Child with Autism Through Art offers teachers and parents specific tools and "plans" in four mediums; collage, painting, play and sculpture.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for all children!.......2007-08-23

The ideas in this book are great for the autistic child, but as a teacher I can see using these ideas with all students! This is a wonderful resource.

                      2 out of 5 stars art book.......2005-10-16

I was very disappointed with this book. As a former preschool teacher, none of the projects in the book were new to me. I was hoping for some special projects to do w/ my autistic son, but we have already done them all.

5 out of 5 stars USEFUL Book that helps with Sensory Integration.......2003-01-26

As a mother of an child with autism, I found Reaching the Child with Autism through Art to be indespensible. The activities are fun and simple and don't take expensive supplies. I feel that these type activities were helpful with my son's sensory integration skills, especially tactile awareness. All the activities are tried and true since the author began teaching in 1968 and had extensive experience from which to draw. I would think that any classroom teacher of children on the autism spectrum would find this book useful but as a homeschooling mom it got us through many days.
