Book Description
"This book, the first one to portray a tropical seabird community, treats the 22 species of seabirds of the Hawaiian archipelago from a conservationist point of view. . . . A class book that is well researched and an important addition to seabird literature."--Charles E. Keller, Indiana Audubon Quarterly.
"This review of Hawaiian seabirds represents one of the very few accounts of a tropical seabird community. . . . For anyone hoping for a perspective on tropical seabird communities, I strongly recommend this book."--P.G. H. Evans, Journal of the British Ornithologists' Union

No one should be without this book.......2003-07-15
Not unlike Rousseau on the road to Vincennes, I found my waistcoat soaked with tears after I read this book. The poignant and heartwarming story of a young Finnish-American's experiences in the high-stakes, no-holds-barred world of competitive birding, this book recounts the author's battles against prejudice and how he prevailed despite all the odds against him. Buy this book right now, and feel your heart soar with the author's as he tells the heart-wrenching story of how, nearing the end of his resources, he found a wounded seabird and nursed it back to life, at one point even suckling it at his own bosom. A truly life-affirming reading experience!
A thrilling read! Not to be missed!.......2003-06-16
After I read this book the first time I was so excited I had to be sedated. It's harder than you might think to spot Hawaiian seabirds where I live, which is in California, but I keep a pair of binoculars handy in the hopes that a Hawaiian sea bird will get confused and wander across the Pacific to my neighborhood. Once I thought I had actually spotted a Hawaiian seabird and, since I felt I should have proof, I set up an antique cannon I found in my grandfather's attic and loaded it with black powder and rock salt. The recoil from the gun, however, knocked it back three feet and smashed two of my toes, and I missed the bird to boot. So, while this book is excellent, I think it should include more practical tips about birding so that other people can avoid my mistake, and a section on first aid would be useful too.
I didn't think I would like this book . . . ........2003-06-03
. . . but I was wrong! This book, quite literally, took my breath away and changed my life. I used not to think much about birds, particularly not about seabirds of Hawaii. Now, having read this wonderful book, for the past four years I've spent virtually every waking hour of my day looking for seabirds of Hawaii -- in the skies around my home, on our pond out back, everywhere! I hope everyone will read this book, and will enjoy it as much as I have.

Book Description
Ever since the publication of the magnificent third edition of A Child Is Born, Lennart Nilsson has devoted himself to retelling this magical story especially for children. How Was I Born? closely follows the experience of Mary who is nearly five and her family as they lovingly prepare to welcome a new baby. The book matches Mary's insatiable curiosity, impatience, and concern with gentle, reassuring information. Nilsson's spectacular photographs illustrate Mary's actual questions: when she wonders how big the baby is, one photo shows an ant on her brother's fingertip, opposite the exact image of her future sibling at that time. When she asks how the baby eats, the reader sees her drinking through a straw as the baby-to-be feeds through the umbilical cord. Meant to be read by a child alone or with a parent, How Was I Born? answers all the questions children ask about pregnancy and childbirth--the biological as well as the emotional ones. Perfect for children aged five and up, it is also a wonderful book of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
good for the very very curious young child.......2007-06-27
God bless the Swedes...no inhibitions here. My 7 year old boy was asking specific questions about child birth and this answered them, alright.
My son loved the pictures of fetal development!.......2006-03-01
A great introduction to pregnancy for a child. Gets the words [of vital organs] and intercourse" on the table to build on for a later discussion. Agree could use a little more realism of the birth, but otherwise great!
Nowhere near as good as the 1975 edition!!!.......2002-06-03
I had wonderful memories of Lennart Nilsson's wondrous photography and book from the 1975 edition my mother got me at age 3. Now, as a mother and a doula I wanted to share it with my own daughter. I did not like the new edition at all. The old edition included more photographs of the developing fetus as well as actually explaining reproduction. It includes multi age nude group photos so children can see the differences between male and female, and there is a photograph of a crowning infant, rather than the sanitized and cleaned up newborn of this book. Overall, I found this book dumbed down and wanting. If you want your child to really understand what is happening inside your body, and how it started, I would recommend Nilsson's "A Story in Pictures" form 1975, which you can get used. It is realistic, everything is illustrated with photographs, not cartoons. The only exception to that is penetration, which is represented by a cross section illustration. It is overall a much better introduction to reproduction and childbirth for children than all of these patronizing, cartoony books that are so common nowadays.
Does your child want to know about the baby inside you?.......2001-06-13
This is the book--color pictures of the baby inside the womb and yet geared towards children so they can share in the experience even more.Wonderful book!
Spellbinding.......2000-07-07
Our oldest daughter was spellbound by this book that we bought while expecting our second child. Fantastic pictures and a great way to explain to a child what is happening with their mom.
Book Description
'To Baghdad and Beyond' is the story of a young evangelical couple who followed the conviction of their faith into a war zone and discovered an alternative to the violence of empires and the complicity of quietism in the "third way" of Jesus's beloved community. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove writes of his journey from a rural Southern Baptist church to Iraq in a time of war to a Christian community of hospitality in an urban neighborhood. Excited by ways that Christian hope is taking concrete form, Wilson-Hartgrove describes a new monastic movement that is witnessing to a world at war that another way is possible.
Book Description
The irrepressible future Governor of Texas is back with a crusade to stop the 'wussification' of the Lone Star State K inky Friedman returns after Texas Etiquetteat his outrageous best as he gives Americans a look at the state made famous by the Alamo, the armadillo, Willie Nelson, and, well, Kinky Friedman. Texas Hold 'Emis composed of provocative essays, autobiographical pieces and profiles of such stellar Texans as his friends Willie Nelson, George W., and Racehorse Haynes. There is also a treasure trove of lists, quizzes and humorous recipes, including: Roy Rogers' rules for being a cowboy compared to Kinky Friedman's rules, a Texas-style astrological chart, Ten Alternate Uses for Salsa, Tex My Ride-or how to make a vehicle more Texas-and cartoons from the twisted genius of Kinky's soulmate, the great cartoonist John Callahan.
Customer Reviews:
Too funny for politics.......2007-05-11
All I knew about Kinky Friedman before reading this book was that he was a little known entertainer who ran for Governor of Texas in 2006. "Probably a disgruntled liberal," I thought. I didn't know that Kinky was Jewish, had kinks in his hair, was better known as an author than as a western musician, or that he was much more intelligent than I had imagined. After reading this book I now know a bit more about Friedman and respect him a lot more than I did when I didn't vote for him in 2006. But I'm still not sure what this book is about.
In the beginning, it touches lightly on politics and in the end briefly revisits the subject. In between, it covers a wide range of seemingly unrelated topics in a humorous vein vaguely reminiscent of S. J. Perlman. Friedman can be funny, yet, at the same time, his humor is often profound and sometimes revealing.
I learned a bit about a lot of things "Texan" while reading this book. I learned, for example, how to rig your truck and the slang used by those incarcerated in Texas prisons in their attempt to communicate with one another. I hope I never have to use this particular jargon. I also learned how to tell if you're a real Texan; some of the "firsts" for Texas; the rather tenuous relationship between eagle scouts and mass murderers; why one should stay at the Menger Hotel when in San Antonio; and much more.
So, if you want to learn a bit about Texas or just enjoy reading books by ex-candidates for governor or Texas, this book might be for you. As for Kinky, he appears to be too funny to be successful in politics. Politicians, as everyone knows, stopped being funny a long time ago.
Well Done Kinkster!.......2006-04-06
Well now, Kinky Friedman and I have spent some time now in my bathroom and I have finished the contents of his book "Texas Hold 'Em: etc." It's quite a ride. I literally laughed AND cried and had to skip a couple of parts that were just too repetitous for me (the dictionary part). You can't ask much more from an author than to touch your emotions and lift your heart and he does both very nicely. I must admit that a big drawing card for me to buy this book was that it had drawings by Callahan. They do NOT disappoint. Wonderful. I so hope Kinky wins in Texas and maybe even moves on from there. I am just positive that he would do no more harm than the folks they have in there now if Mr. Delay is any example. Hooray for American politics to have such creatures in it.
This book is retarded.......2005-11-29
A friend who had the same taste in reading as me recommended this book so I bought it. I was in a few spots funny, but more dumb then anything. Save your money.
Kinky really comes into his own with this book!.......2005-10-29
I've been a long time fan of Kinky and read all of his novels. Now, he has gotten away from his 'off the wall' mysteries with their wonderful characters.Kinky is one of the most gifted and entertaining authors around today. He can come up with a one-liner as good as anyone around.Without even a seconds pause,he can make the political correct run for cover. As a Jewish Country singer he has no equal, especially when you realize he comes from New York and is completely at home in Redneck Texas.
Right now he is in the process of runing fot Governor of Texas. One can never tell what the results of an election will be,but somehow I think that worse things could happen than he wins.
In this book he explains many facets of life, as can be seen in some of these quotes, and even gives us some insight into how things will be done under his Governorship.
"The question is whether a candidacy is a joker or whether the current crop of politicans is the joker."
"My platform is to fight the wussification of this great state and bring back the glory of Texas."
"To be elected in Texas one must believe in a Supreme Being."
He also passes on other wisdom;such as:
"You know you're from Texas if you've been married and divorced five times and still have the same in-laws.
"I had the rare distinction of being introduced by the Rev.Jimmy Snow as the first full blooded Jew to appear on The Grand Ole Opry."
"Saddam's a thug with an excellent tailor."
"As old Austinites used to say;"Onward through the fog."
I guarantee ,if you pick up this book;you'll have a hard time putting it down.
You Don't Have to Play Poker to Enjoy This.......2005-09-23
Texas Hold'em is Kinky Friedman at his best. Full of annedotes and commentary. No subject is off limits. I must admit, if you are from Texas (which I am not) you will surely get more laughs then a Yankee. Kinky takes the reader on a variety of rides through his mind, refusing to stop even when the trails become muddy. The book is so good, you will have to reread it just to make sure you got all it. Texas Hold em' is easy to read -- whether on a horse or on a train or sitting in a recliner. Nothing complicated, just a bunch of a essays that make the book very difficult to put down. I hope this isn't the last we've heard from the Kinkster.
Customer Reviews:
A helpful introduction.......2006-11-04
This is an excellent resource to explain to children of 8 to 10 on how babies are conceived and born. My son, especially, found this useful when he was too young for full-fledged biological details, but big enough to learn the basics.
The drawings are not suggestive, or threatening. But kids learn about eggs and sperm, that they must join to form an embryo, how a baby grows in utero, and how it's born.
We've had a few other children's books on this topic, and while this one includes one or two errors, it is factual--and gentle--enough to serve as a good introduction.
misleading.......2006-01-06
Just doing a quick 'search inside' of this book, I found:
"It's when they are teenagers that boys begin to have sperm and girls begin to have eggs."
Any five-year-old should know that female infants have all the oocytes that they'll ever have.
grew up with this.......2005-02-19
my mother bought this book for my older sister and so i grew up with it i think it is a great book and plain on buying a copy for when i have kids when ever i think of how i will tell my kids about sex this book always comes to mind.thank you for you time.
A wonderful resource..........2005-01-10
This is the book my Mom used to explain how babies were born for both my younger brother and I and my friends who have children have since used it to explain to their children.
This is a wonderful resource for all parents who are struggling to explain where babies come from to young children.
Finally, proof that I really was a child!.......2003-01-09
My girlfriend swears to God that I have no childhood memories or nostalgia of any sort, so I got to thinking of my childhood, and this came to mind. I read this book as a kid, when neither of my parents could muster up the courage to talk to me about birth and sex. I remember really liking it, probably because it pulled few punches: I don't know what I'd have thought of a daddy's "little red wagon" parking in mommy's "station," ya know?
Well, one check to Amazon later, and glory be! If I can order it, I will, just to say I have it again. It'd make for quite the conversation piece--plus, I wanna see if my Mom remembers it too.
It makes me wonder what an updated 2002 version of the baby-making talk would go: "When a mommy loves a mommy very much, they hire a stranger, or a friend, or any other male, to donate their sperm to one of the mommy's, who then proceeds to have a little baby of their own." Almost makes me wanna be an author, actually.
