My neighbor is a polar bear.......2005-10-29
A wonderful book about polar bears. The author lived with polar bears on wrangell island, while undertaking research into the life-cycle and behavior. In this book, he shares his exciting observations in an entertaining account. I learned more about polar bears from this book than any other book and television documentary I have seen.
A must read for anyone interested in the lives of polar bears.
Engaging storyteller, zealot proponent of Ursus Maritimus.......2000-06-18
This is the book for you if the imagery of Barry Lopez's Artic Dreams captured you. Dr. Ovsyanikov hung out with Bering population of Polar Bears, notably Wrangel and Hearld Island. A drawback is that there are only glimpses of the life cycle of the Polar Bear in his spring-fall trips he chronicles. In addition the most accessable bear population is trivially mentioned in one page (Churchill). So, this is a secular book, extraordinarily entertaining and full of facts and de-mystifying of the general ideas held of Polar Bear behavior, but of bears in only one part of the artic. It does stand alone as an appeal to understand these great mammals. Like grizzlies, these are individuals, and must be treated as such. Great work, Dr. Ovsyanikov!
Polar Wonders.......2000-04-22
I devoured this book while traveling on a two-day business trip. Ovsyanikov's writing is clean and easy to read. His photographs are beautiful and revealing. Most importantly, he dispels many myths about the "beast" of the north and replaces them with hard won insights.
As a scientist, Ovsyanikov does this by careful and sometimes brave experimentation and patient observation. I suspect that he may be the only person on the planet willing to stand up to a charging polar bear to assert his "dominance." He shares his love for the white bear and his concern for their future wellbeing. In these and other ways, he reminds me of Dian Fossey.
Anyone seeking to expand his or her knowledge of our natural world will treasure this wonderful book.

Inspiring and affectionate account of a fascinating animal.......1998-09-25
I first encountered this book while on a ship, steaming along the Arctic ice edge on a research cruise towards Wrangel Island, the site of most of the author's research. Along the way, we regularly had the good fortune to encounter polar bears on the ice floes, often approaching within thirty metres of our ship. This book was the one that we all consulted -- devoured, really -- to learn more about these remarkable creatures. The author writes about them with great knowledge, but also tremendous sensitivity and understanding. While not compromising the information the book contains, he does not adhere to the objective distance typical of many scientists, but makes plain his love and fascination for these creatures. After reading this book, and gazing at the astonishing photographs, you will feel the same way.
Book Description
Step-by-step instructions and clearly detailed diagrams enable origamists to build over 35 different polyhedra from origami units. Fascinating models range from relatively simple modular cubes to more advanced two-piece modules, a gyroscope, and a 14-sided cuboctahedron. Subjects will challenge devotees of the craft, and can demonstrate geometric principles in the classroom.

Origami book.......2005-10-14
I was really disapointed over this book. The drawings was to unclear and difficult to understand. And I am very sorry that I am not able to use this book.
Terrible...even for an experienced folder.......2005-06-12
I have been doing origami for about 10 years, and have had great success with modular origami (mostly from "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse). This book has diagrams that are hard to understand, the colored side of the paper is not even marked so it's very difficult to know if you are folding correctly. There are no written instructions, only the bad diagrams and I could not make a single model from this book. Even the few photos of the completed models were in black and white and not very good photos at all. I would recommend Fuse's book or another modular origami book with better diagrams. For those that have had success with models from this book, congratulations, but even with my usual vast amount of patience it did not take long for me to throw this book across the room in frustration. However, I will say that the models are very unique and beatiful and if you can do them, they should be very satisfying. I am copying this same review for "3-d Geometric Origami" by Gurkewitz and Arnstein, for I felt the same was true of that book.
Knifty models confusingly presented.......2000-10-10
That rating is really 3 1/2 stars, because the book is better than just average. It may look slim, but it's chock-full of several models in each of many families of modules. Not hours, but weeks of fun (not to mention a lot of paper squares).
The problem is the presentation. Many models are hard to follow, especially when trying to put them together; more than once, I had to refer to another book to figure out what to do. Some diagrams are confusing, if not outright wrong (3-dimensional pictures are especially prone to this). Occasionally instructions are alluded to (e.g., in captions) that aren't there. There's a complete absence of cross-references between illustrative photos and instructions for folding them.
In short, a frustrating book. If the good parts weren't so good, it wouldn't be quite so frustrating.
Beautiful Models for Expert Folders.......2000-03-30
This book bursts with stunning models of various polyhedra. The directions, and models, are harder than in "Modelar Origami Polyhedra." The book opens with a nicely detailed section of polyhedra facts, including the numbers of edges, corders, face shapes and category of each shape, along with a definition of Platonic solids. For the non-mathematician, this information provides a nice grounding in polyhedra. The directions for each module are complicated yet clear. Occasionally the lack of color in the book proves a bit frustrating, but patience and double-checking can bypass that nitpicky problem. The one thing this book does not provide is guidance about connecting all of the modules. That is when authorial reassurance is most required! Nevertheless, this book will provide hours of pleasure for those with patience and nimble fingers.
Book Description
Innovative, stimulating and challenging book combines the art of paperfolding with making polyhedra-based models. Projects range from the relatively simple cube and tetrahedron to such mind-boggling fabrications as the double pentagonal pyramid and the truncated hexadecahedron. Instructions and diagrams included.

Pretty sweet.......2007-04-01
This book really has a fair amount of really cool models to make. If found the directions relatively easy to follow. The directions are actually drawn on computer or something which has its advantages and disadvantages. Pictures can have hands that get in the way and inadequate directions on how to fold it even though it shows segments of steps through the pictures.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the book since this was -$10.
Inexpensive Reference for Modular Enthusiasts.......2003-02-24
This slim volume has a some nice features that make up for a lack of illustrations and model photos, including a clever pentagon template, tips for cutting equilateral triangles & hexagons, and suggestions for cutting multiple pieces for the projects. I especially enjoyed working with the triangle, simple square, and the spike ball modules, which I used to make solid, satisfying models. The "triangle edge module" can be used to make a nice tetrahedron or an icosahedron (which helped me see the relationship between that shape and a dodecahedron). I skipped a couple of spiky models that required glue, but I was generally very pleased with the book.
It's cheap. You can do better for a few more bucks........2000-10-05
It's about the size of a grade-school workbook. The pictures are confusing and need a bit of interpretation to clarify what the author is getting at.
As an experienced paper folder, I found the designs and the instructions lacking.
As to the beginners perspective, for entertainment on a long train ride with my younger brother, I brought this book and another geometric origami book "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse.
My brother was a complete novice. He first attempted a few projects from "3-D Geometric Origami : Modular Polyhedra." He seemed a bit discouraged through the whole process, however, we were pretty bored so he attempted to complete few anyway. The finished products didn't hold up very well and they didn't look very pretty either.
He was about to give up on origami altogether. I handed him the Unit Origami book, and he took off. He was an origami folding fanatic for the whole week we were staying with our relatives.
I loved this book.......2000-05-28
I'm a big fan of the origami, and I think this book is great. It has a lot of very nice projects, it has easy-to-follow instructions, and you can create different models with the basic module. I've already made a lot of the projects, and the result was espectacular!
A fantastic book for enthusiasts!.......1999-09-09
I really enjoy this book. It combines the beauty of origami with the principles of geometry. It gives instructions for simple modular origami, telling you how to make the finished shapes as large and complex or small and simple as you like. It gives room for countless variations on the techniques taught here. My friends are amazed when I show them my latest creations and tell them that in one shape there are 72 pieces of paper!

Aging.......2006-01-16
It addresses some of the basic, rather common, issues that people confront as they grow older in the course of life
Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging.......2003-06-03
Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging is about taking better care of yourself physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and financially. Chapter 2 addresses changes in your body and what you can do to prevent them, Chapter 2 discusses your mind, chapter 4 your spirit. This book is especially useful for people interested in planning and preparing for life after retirement. Useful for caregivers as well. I would also recommend Mayo Clinic on Alzheimer's Disease not only for those with Alzheimer's but because of the excellent "Quick Guide for Caregivers."
On a scale of 1 to 10, a solid 1.......2001-11-22
My only qualification for judging this book is that I am old and would like to know more about what is happening to me and what to do about it. I have read a number of articles in such periodicals as The Reader's Digest, Time Magazine, etc., but I was eager to see a more comprehensive account of what goes on as aging progresses, and how best to deal with it. So I ordered this book. What did I learn? NOTHING! It covers much of the commonplace information that I've seen dozens of times -- in newspapers, in widely circulated magazines, and in pamphlets given away at the local old folks' center. For instance a little forgetfulness does not imply Alzheimer's, and senior citizens should maintain contact with other people. Mayo, perhaps the most highly reputed of the general clinics, should have lots to say, but this book barely deserves one star. I am so disappointed that I'm sending this book back for a refund.
