Fitkid7 is a great book on childhood fitness & health. It covers the issues of exercising, healthy eating and much much more.

I found it was easy to read (unlike a few others I've tried).

I love all the sections on Recipies, Shopping lists, meal ideas etc.

I would recommend FitKid7 to anyone looking for a book on kid's health. Your kids would love to read it just as I have.

Sirkka Wolke has done a great job on this one.****** 6 stars from me!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the parent whose child asks a lot of questions about animals .......2007-04-07

This book is an excellent primer on many of the aspects of our animal co-residents of Earth. Written for the young child, (actually for the parent) there are detailed answers too many of the questions children pose. Some examples are:

*) Why do dogs sniff all over the place?
*) Why do dogs wag their tails?
        *) Why do cats purr?
*) Why are rabbit's ears long?
*) Why are some monkey's bottoms read?
*) Why do giraffes have long necks?
*) Why do mice gnaw on hard things?
*) Why does a camel have a hump?

The illustrations that accompany the text are colorful and detailed, sure to catch the eye of an inquisitive child. For each question, there is a small caption called "To the parent." It contains more detailed information at a level higher than that of the text meant for the child. I strongly recommend this for parents whose children have lots of questions about animals.

                      5 out of 5 stars Interesting & Inspiring.......2003-09-14

I bought this book for .25 at a library sale with low expectations. IT's out of print, etc... but I was so pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to read and how captivated I was by the content. It's not a how-to book, but an interesting report on how the study results turned out. I found the author's language completely understandable, his examples were numerous and analysis seemed incredibly insightful. I agree with the other reviewer, I found myself and our marriage described in various places in the book. I was inspired to make some small changes in my behavior based on things I had read in the book and the atmosphere has really lightened up around here after 10 months with the new baby. I will pass this book to anyone I know who is contemplating children... and I will re-read it every once in awhile for further inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Accurately assessing the health of your marriage post-baby.......2002-05-10

I first read this book 7 yrs. ago when my husband and I were expecting our first child. We now have a 2 yr. old girl as well. I had actually all but forgotten about this book but accidentally came across it the other day as we have been preparing for a move. I have not been able to put it down since. The authors have made an amazing discovery through their experiment on 250 couples that is amazingly accurate in assessing the health of one's marriage post-baby. Going from a couple to becoming parents is the hugest adjustment most couples will go through, and this book illustrates which marriages are most likely to end in divorce and which are most likely to survive this difficult adjustment/transition. I have been astounded to find myself, my marriage, and my parenting and relating styles on these pages. I just ordered another copy to my best friend, who's a newlywed, contemplating having their first child! I highly recommend it to all first-time parents, and even if you've been a parent a while and want your marriage to be better, it will help point out things you can change and ways to improve your marriage.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must read for all "wanna-be" parents!.......1999-01-24

I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to enter parenthood. Extremely incitive, even a bit scary at times. While it is written as a case study, it is still easy to read. This book has passed through my entire circle of friends.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I read on preparing to have a new baby.......1998-12-11

The book focuses on the most important relationship to a baby--how the parent's relate to each other after the first child is born. The stability and love (or lack thereof) in the parental relationship creates the environment in which the child is raised. Men and women have different expectations and reactions to the birth of a child. This book is a long-term case study of what types of marriages grow stronger, stay the same or get weaker as a result of the birth of a child. The insights I gained helped me to modify and be aware of issues in my marriage that having children creates. I believe my marriage has grown stronger after children and part of the reason was the insight gained from this book.

                      Book Description

The years following high school graduation to the mid-twenties hold the most serious of all developmental tasks for families. Parents are attempting to move on to a life no longer focused around children, while helping their young adults become established in their own lives. Parents anguish over when it is best to offer insights from experience and when it is best to let young adults learn from their own failures. When does advice become interference? When does a little financial support become financial dependence? When does a safety net become a snare?

The goal of the family is for young adults to succeed in developing their own views and separate identities without emotionally cutting themselves off from their parents. Negotiating this period of family life has become increasingly difficult in our society simply because society is changing so rapidly.

Introducing the idea of a new phase of life called post-adolescence, Kathleen O'Connell Chesto takes a groundbreaking look at young adults emerging in North American families and the influences, within the family and beyond, that have shaped them. Based on her experience of launching three successful young adults and having interviewed over 150 parents and young adults, the author explores the following new issues and challenges facing young adults and their parents today:
                      a sense of perspective
                      a sense of self
                      a sense of place
                      a sense of family
                      a sense of security
                      a sense of forgiveness
                      a sense of the sacred

Reading this book together, parents and young adults can come to fresh understandings and develop new ways of nurturing their relationship during this time of transition.

I loved it and am buying another copy to circulate among my clients who have teenage kids. Timely, insightful and fun as she's included her own kids to collaborate with her. Pastors should take note so as to understand what your must do to engage more of our young people into becoming churchgoers. The last two chapters are especially beautiful and worthwhile for anyone of any age: A Sense of Forgiveness and A Sense of the Sacred.

                      Book Description

Many new mothers and fathers are surprised at how they change as individuals and as couples after a baby is born. Susan Walzer's interviews explore the tendency for men and women to experience their transitions into parenthood in different ways-a pattern that has been linked to marital stress.

How do new mothers and fathers think about babies, and what is the influence of parental consciousness in reproducing motherhood and fatherhood as different experiences? The reports of new parents in this book illustrate the power of gendered cultural imagery in how women and men think about their roles and negotiate their parenting arrangements.

New parents talk about what it means to them to be a "good" mother or father and how this plays out in their working arrangements and their everyday interactions over child care. The author carefully unravels the effects of social norms, personal relationships, and social institutions in channeling parents toward gender-differentiated approaches to parenting.

What is it like to become a grandmother? In every culture, a woman's self-identity changes when her daughter or daughter-in-law births a child. In Becoming a Grandmother, Sheila Kitzinger, well-known pregnancy, birth, and motherhood expert and author of the bestselling The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth, turns her pen and insights to the mother-grandmother life transition.

What has grandmotherhood traditionally been like in cultures around the world? What does it feel like to be a grandmother in youth-oriented Western society? To answer these and other questions, Kitzinger turns to folklore, literature, anthropology, her personal experiences, and the experiences of many other grandmothers. She is at her strongest when she profiles grandmothers in different cultures and when she discusses the different ways--from embrace to denial--that new grandmothers react to their new identity. Kitzinger's specific advice for enhancing relationships with daughters, daughters-in-law (this book is largely centered on the female experience), and grandchildren may not ring true for every reader, but her intimate tone certainly will. Parenting and mothering literature has neglected the role and identity of the grandmother for too long; Becoming a Grandmother is a welcome addition to a small canon.

4 out of 5 stars the transition rather than "how to".......2000-12-15

I gave this book to my mother when I found out I was pregnant. I admit to reading most of it before handing it on. I now wish I'd bought two copies -- one for my mother-in-law. It is a great account of all the doubts and feelings that may occur when a mother finds out her offspring is going to become a parent. The author mainly deals with a mother-daughter relationship, rather than a mother-son relationship. The author is British, and I related well to the content. It was reassuring to know that my mother was probably experiencing doubts and having to address issues to do with her growing older. I enjoyed the idea that a new bond is created between mother and daughter because they share childbirth in common. My mum felt that it was a lot less threatening to receive this as a gift, than to be given a How to Grandparent book which is really a slap in the face to say 'You don't know what to do!'. A good narrative which should be taken in the light in which it was written -- not a how-to book, but a food-for-thought book which might reassure that its okay to have doubts about impending grandparent-hood.

I am some years away from becoming a grandmother. I bought and read this book for my church library. I was disappointed in it. Instead of good advice on how to be a grandma, especially when living at a distance from grandkids, this book seemed to be written for those who dreaded becoming a grandma. GEEZ. Let's buck up ladies and realize that grandmotherhood is a BLESSING rather than some kind of condemnation of age! We EARN the right to be elders, to be wise! When will American women welcome each section of their lives as they pass through it? You only go this way but once and there are plenty of dead women who would have given everything to live long enough to even see grandchildren. This book left little to look forward to. In her effort to try to convince "reluctant" grandmothers that they should look forward to this experience she seemed to be saying that if you WERE looking forward to it, something is wrong with you. I had great relationships with both my grandmothers. They enriched my life tremendously and were another voice of reason and ears to listen as I was growing up. Kitzinger's book left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Call me disappointed.

It's not a Medically based or even Pcych based book (the author has no background and admits it) but it has more impact on emotionally settling concerns than ANY medically written book yet.
No other book I've found actually lakes you feel like you are not alone, explains why your spouce feels the way they do and has reacted to having a baby the way they did. And it opens your eyes to where you probably got the foundations that led to how you react to a baby's birth.

I really wish i had gotten this book when my baby was about 2 months old (before PPD set in and I ran out of energy or time to read) because simply reading it was like a cloud lifted. Every paragraph of this book was like lightbulbs going off! Share it with your spouce too!

                            Book Description

In this book the authors examine in depth the lives of inner-city adolescent mothers, going beyond stereotypes to illuminate the diverse pathways to young adulthood taken by these young women. The different ways they respond to becoming a parent reflect a range of abilities, aspirations, and supports. Their often-creative solutions to living in poverty, the intensity of their desires to make their children's lives better, the height of their youthful ambition when they succeed, and the depth of their pain when they fail, all show a surprising range. The authors argue that adolescent mothers who enter young adulthood with the skills and desires to care for themselves and their children are not the resilient few and present a lengthy analysis of the multidimensional processes that lead to and characterize this resilience.

In making constructive suggestions for social welfare policies and reforms, this book serves as an ideal model of the important uses of qualitative research for understanding the adolescent experience. More than that, the book stands out among others by this social policy perspective and its focus on encouraging adolescent mothers to reach their potentials.

This volume aims to attract those who wish to learn more about the adolescent experience without getting lost in the detail of the methods and analyses. To this end, the main body of the text presents general methods and results. Scholarly details of the work are placed in appendices to which the interested reader can refer. A second highlight is the inclusion of impressionistic material, such as quotes from the adolescent mothers who were participants in this research. Such material brings to life the real issues of very real adolescents--their triumphs and struggles, their riches and poverty, their strengths and weaknesses.

I really like the personal touches Michelle Brenner adds, with stories of her own experiences. She has created a beautiful "baby" book!

I bought several of these books for gifts so naturally I had to read one first before handing them out. How I wish something like this would have been available 40 years ago . At that time there was only Dr. Spock. Michelle hasn't left a thing out that new parents need to know. She has done a wonderful job. Everything is written in plain english so there is no guess work. I am sure all my friends are going to love it. Opal Casey, Antioch Ca. USA

5 out of 5 stars Great Book not only for new moms -- but new FAMILIES!.......2001-04-29

Most of the other baby books just talk about the new baby or mom. This book covers those important subjects but also has great ideas for how to make the transition to becoming a family. The author also includes personal stories which are both touching and reassuring for a first time parent. Her first hand experience with postpartum depression and willingness to discuss it candidly provided great information and encouragement that was so much more helpful than a just a clinical definition.

The lists and forms are first rate. The author also included descriptions of items you need for baby. This was great since most of the terms were new to me.

This book recognizes that starting a family doesn't just end at the delivery room. The book provides the necessary information and foundation for becoming a family after a baby comes home!

This book is wonderful. Its a very easy to read overview of what we can soon be expecting. Mrs. Brenner has done all of us new parents or parents to be a wonderful service in writing this book. Thanks so much!

I've always said that the hospital never gave me instructions on what to do with my baby when I got him home from the hospital! They prepared me with LaMaze classes, breathing techniques, films on what would happen in the delivery room, but once I was off the maternity ward and back at home with this new baby, I was stumped! This book is the first I've read that can really answer your questions during those first few months at home with a new baby. It's like a catalog for new parents. I loved it! Read it before entering the delivery room, then again when you get home!
