Customer Reviews:
Great reference, but DRY & no templates.......2007-02-28
I have a love hate relationship with this book. My wife's Grandfather left it to me with some tools. It is OLD school & dry (I read it to go to sleep). However, it has a grand breadth of projects and depth of detail. It is a great reference. Don't expect full sized, exciting templates. This was written before the copy machine. Do expect a challenging variety of projects and keen insights. This book is not directly related to my goals as a carver. However, it does challenge me indirectly to become better.
It's ok.......2006-07-18
I'm a brand new whittler and this guy is a tad dry for me. Or perhaps a little intimidating. All the wood carving stuff is beside my point. Good stuff; I just don't love this book.
Very helpful.......2003-07-12
This book is great for a beginner to learn all the basics of whittling. i was making a wooden chain in no time at all and im ready to go on to the more challenging projects.
The Great American Whittling Book!.......1999-12-29
Written in the thirties this is the whittler's magnum opus. Classic whittling tricks and projects, soap carving, etc. Get this book, a pocket knife and a chunck of white pine. Find a shady tree or a park bench and whittle away. Want to make a pair of operational box jointed wooden pliers?, a ball in a cage?, a wooden chain? Tangerman will walk you through the process step by step. It is easier than it looks. I have a wooden chain with a ball in a cage hanging in the shop for people to casually discover. When they do my stock goes up three or four points right away.

1001 Designs for Whittling and Woodcarving.......2000-04-19
Without any review, I never had a chance to really know if this is the book that I need. Unfortunately, it is not what I was looking for.
However, the book itself is OK for beginners who are looking for simple objects like Christmas tree ornaments, butter and cookie molds, chip-carved pieces, tramp-carving, gouge decoration, silhouettes and more.
For experienced carvers, challenging projects like toys, weather vanes, signs, noisemakers, musical instruments, cigar-store, animals and humans, caricatures, carved jigsaw puzzles and more.

intermediate carver's dream book.......2007-07-30
I was thrilled by the range of styles shown. For someone like me, who has been carving small figural objects (mostly dolls) for a couple of years, this book is a dream come true. Carving styles from all over the world are featured, and techniques for the various styles are discussed. There are small sketches of hundreds of different motifs and items to inspire and inform. I would not strictly call them patterns, as other reviewers have, but all could be made into patterns with any printer that can blow up small sketches.
I liked the variety shown. Whether you like bas relief carving, whittled figures, doll house furniture, or toys like jumping jacks, you can find them here.
As other reviewers have noted, this may not be the best choice for a book to instruct the complete novice, nor did I get the impression ( as others have) that this is the purpose of it. The photos on the front of the book do not depict beginning projects, but intermediate ones, for example. For someone like me, who knows the basics, it's a book full of possibility, which is rare in a world where most craft books offer 20 uninspired projects that only serve to kill my interest, when what I want is to pique it. I found the book in a store today just as they closed. As soon as I left I regretted not buying it so ran home to order one. I can't wait for my copy~!
More advanced than I anticpated........1999-10-24
I thought that a book with this title would have a significant beginners section for a starting whittler, but it doesn't. The book is primarily a pattern book with some hints for working the wood and possibly a short history for pattern classifications. A redeeming factor is the patterns have a front and side shot. Complicated patterns, such as a dutch shoe will have exploded details. A nice book if your looking for what to do next. Not a good learning book for beginners. Bill Hampton (billsducks@aol.com)
Not for begginers.......1999-10-04
I was disappointed in this book because I was hoping this would provide tips for someone with absolutely no experience to get started on. It doesn't do that. Basically, it has a lot of different patterns to use once you are already carving. If that's what you're looking for, it might be a good book for you.

ASIN: 0070626693 |
Customer Reviews:
From the Back Cover:.......2005-10-07
This book is an invaluable source for the established craftsman as well as the would-be carver and whittler 0 a volume that can be followed detail by detail or that can serve as an endlessly fascinating point of departure for those who want their instructions clear and their imaginations unfettered.
This book provides a wealth of information on the kinds and characteristics of woods and how to select them, what to do about cracks, how to repair broken carvings, and tricks that can be played with wet wood. Nor are other materials ignored: plastic foam, soapstone, bone, ivory, stones and shells. And there are tips on carving tools and accessories, how to sharpen tools, and the different kinds of finishes best suited to a desired effect. Here too are a dazzling array of designs for objects small and large - from lapel pins to rocking chairs. Taken together, these designs are a stunning collection in themselves as well as a lively stimulus to mastery of one of the world's oldest and most satisfying crafts.

Product Description
Feeding your family a healthy diet (in the real world with real kids and real food) can be a challenge! Parents are trying to follow current nutrition guidelines, teach their kids healthy eating habits--and avoid too much junk food. But these goals are hard to meet when kids (and adults!) have strong food preferences; if there are daily fights over what, when, and/or how-much kids should eat; and because meals must to be fit into a super busy schedule. Feeding the Kids solves these problems with a new, easy-to-use system for feeding the entire familly well every day...all while enjoying eating more.
This system makes it easy to:
- Find kid-friendly, healthy food easily using simple label-reading tricks that classify all foods into three categories: Smart foods (super healthy foods packed with nutrition); Empty items (junk food that provides little nutrition but fill kids up); and In-Between choices (partly Smart and partly Empty). Using this new system, anyone can pick out the healthiest versions of snacks, drinks, breakfast cereal, pasta, lunch meats, chicken nuggets, or any other food.
- Eat enough Smart and In-Between food. Feeding the Kids includes a customized routine that makes meal planning incredibly easy. Even better, the plan insures that the whole family gets into the habit of eating enough Smart foods each day, including: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy foods and protein-rich foods. But this plan doesn't follow pre-set menus and certainly doesn't include eating foods the family dislikes. Instead, this plan can be adapted to include favorite foods, meals out and family food preferences.
- Stop feeling guilty about junk food. Empties are a fun part of life, and everyone (adults and children) should be allowed to really enjoy them. The Feeding the Kids approach to these foods is to: recognize which foods are Empties (especially the sneaky ones that look healthy), eliminate less-loved Empty food, then really enjoy, guilt-free, the Empties the children do love.
- Serve great-tasting, healthy meals, and fun, nutritious snacks...fast. Feeding the Kids includes over 50 mini-recipes and lots of simple menus ideas that are kid-tested and extremely easy to make. Recipes include healthy versions of: chicken nuggets, milkshakes, cookies, pancakes, sorbet, hot chocolate, hamburgers, popsicles and many more family favorites.
Customer Reviews:
I Sure Could Have Used This 25 Years Ago.......2007-10-08
It's great to know that parents don't have to surrender to the conventional wisdom that all kids will eat is junk! I wish I'd had this book 25 years ago when I was going nuts trying to get good food into my son. Feeding the Kids is now my favorite gift to give expectant mothers at baby showers. Thanks, ladies, for all your expertise and imagination!
Creative recipies, great healty food ... I love it!.......2007-10-07
I read this book from begining to end and loved the creative recipies. It really helped me understand how healthy food can be great to eat. I especially loves the breaded chicken, my mom cooks it once a week.

not what I expected.......2007-09-10
I ordered this book mostly because of the claim of 80 menus which I thought would give me a lot of ideas of how to put healthier meals together for my family. The word "menu" is used extremely loosely -- as even snack items are considered a "menu". So, the 80 "menus" includes things like popsicles or oatmeal raisin cookies. (Yes, those are 2 separate menus ... REALLY!) This is one of those books that had I been able to browse through it at the bookstore I would have NEVER purchased. I gave it 2 stars only because the rating system of smart, in-between and empty foods is helpful but it is basically 1 chapter (i.e. less than 10 pages) of the book. Not worth buying the whole book just for that.
Julie Atwater .......2007-08-15
This is such a wonderful book; I wish I'd had it when my kids were younger. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it back on the shelf. I had to buy several for my friends who have young children and one for my daughter, for my future grandchildren. I particularly appreciated the no nonsense approach to TEACHING our kids how to eat. Afterall they all have to feed themselves eventually and where else will they learn what foods give them nutrition and how much really constitutes a portion. They have to learn it from us. Wish I'd had this book before, but I'm glad to pass this one on for everyone around me. Thanks!

Just Two More Bites!: Helping Picky Eaters Say Yes to Food
ASIN: 1564148572 |
Book Description
You've tried preparing wholesome meals for your children but they want McDonald's instead. What can you do? Perhaps your kids are starting to look more chubby than cute - what can you say that won't make them feel bad? How can you teach your loveable, junk food-eating kid better habits? Convincing your child to eat healthy isn't easy, but it can be done...one habit at a time. What Should I Feed My Kids? is the first comprehensive "how-to" manual to help your child develop healthier habits, from his first bite of food through her teenage years, when the habit-molding opportunity screeches to a halt. Well-known nutritionist (and parent) Julien uses real-life stories and examples to teach balance and moderation. She provides practical, solid advice that can be easily and immediately implemented at home, at school, on vacation, at slumber parties, football games...even into college, including:
Packing healthy, tasty school meals your kids will actually eat. Setting up a diet plan your kids will follow. Finding a decent meal at a fast-food restaurant. Talking to your child about weight or eating disorders. Getting your child off the couch and into exercising. Children's health has never been more of a major concern than today. Lack of a proper diet can lead to problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Adults often find it too difficult to correct their own bad eating habits in their adult years. But for our children, the time to change is now. What Should I Feed My Kids? is a must-read for every parent who wants to move from problem to solution: a healthy child who understands and makes balanced food choices.
