    Book Description

Baker explores the 1951 miners' strike in Hanover, New Mexico, in which the Mexican American miners were prohibited from picketing. When their wives picketed for them, leading to a victory for the miners in 1952, the miners' union was forced to consider gender equality in their struggle for justice. Baker also explores the collaboration between mining families and blacklisted Hollywood filmmakers that resulted in the controversial 1954 film Salt of the Earth. She shows how this worker-artist alliance gave the mining families a unique chance to clarify the meanings of the strike in their own lives and allowed the filmmakers to create a progressive alternative to Hollywood productions.

    Book Description

"My son's in jail on a drug charge."

    "My daughter practices witchcraft."

Parents who are forced to make such statements feel a pain like none other. Their hearts are heavy and they are deeply concerned about their child's well-being. Often they've tried everything: begging, praying, arguing, reasoning, making rules, and setting boundaries. But nothing works. What more can they do? Just accept it?

In Moments for Families of Prodigals, parents find much-needed encouragement. This devotional is full of powerful stories of answered prayers, numerous ideas of what they can do while waiting for God to work in their child's life, and helpful teachings about how to deal with the pain. With prodigals, there are never any guarantees, but there can be a sense of peace.

    5 out of 5 stars Uplifting Read.......2007-09-22

This book is a wonderful adjunct to one's devotional prayers. It offers encouragement, and powerful prayers that may be said on behalf of prodigals. For anyone who has had a prodigal in their life, this book can turn one back to a simple trust in the Holy One, who not only parted the Red Sea, but brought the Apostle Paul to faith in Christ, and has worked in countless other lives to bring about salvation, reconstruction, and renewal. Let this little book be a healing balm when you undergo suffering on behalf of a prodigal. A worthwhile purchase for an individual, or to share with others. Blessings!

5 out of 5 stars Good News About Prodigals.......2006-03-05

As christian parents my husband and I were devasted when our 18 year old daughter not only walked away from God , but was very defiant and got into some bad things. This book was a comfort to me and the Bible , this book and God are the only things that got me through the rough times. I really put into practice some of the things mentioned in this book, such as unconditional love . A year or so after her walk away from God she returned and is so tender now and really serving Him. She has told us over and over that the unconditional love no matter what she did was a major part in her returning to the faith. We did not condone the things she did, but loved her in spite of them. Praise God there is hope for our lost loved ones! This book is awesome and really puts things in perspective and it will help you if you are in the same situation!

For those who have never experienced a relationship with God through Jesus Christ (not religion, i.e. Catholicism) this book will not make any sense. But, for those who understand what a personal relationship with Jesus is all about, this book speaks volumes to the experience of prodigals. It is one thing to walk away from religion, quite another to walk away from the living God. This book is about that God, the loving Father who pursues his children in spite of their rejection of him. If you are, or were a prodigal you'll understand. If you are a parent of a prodigal, this book will be a healing salve to the wounds you have experienced. We have used this book in self-help groups of parents struggling with prodigals - overwhelming positive response!... Parents in this circumstance loved and cling to it's message of hope. Those outside of this experience, or in a current prodigal state will be clueless. Read it!

        2 out of 5 stars A One Sided View.......2000-06-26

As a recovering Catholic myself, I have experienced the pressure firsthand, to return to my family's faith. Though his grasp on language is decent, he lacks to realize children and adolecents as individuals and not just exstentions of parent's own morals and beliefs. Also to not seriously consider a child's action's as relevant, thought out or meaningful. Summed up, the book preaches that youths are weak, suceptible, and easily swayed minds, and that the choices made are not logical or withstanding. Don't assume this is a passing phase in a persons life, this could very well be a decision made to shape one's life for better or for worse. 13 years after my own decision, I have no regrets.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-04-22

I've been making whips for 14 years and have every book in print on the subject of whips and plaiting. They all show braiding sequences and patterns, some better than others. However they all lack one thing. That is showing proper process and technique. David Morgan's book fills this void and does it extremely well. It is written so that someone with little or no plaiting experience can understand it and has some simple projects that will help to develope proper technique. This book doesn't show how to make whips and is not intended to do so. If you are a beginner this book is essential. If you've been plaiting for a while, you may learn something and refine your technique.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Scoop on Leather Braiding.......2004-03-11

Even if you are a beginner, this book will show you how to braid simple projects quite quickly. Practice the methods in this book paying close attention to detail and you will soon have a quality product made of either precut lace, a skin, or a side of leather!
If you are looking for solid tutoring in crafting basic braided work, this is the book for you.
You'll learn the fundamentals about materials, tools, cutting, and braiding upfront. The author then takes you through seven different projects with illustrations to go by. With this knowledge your skills will develop to create fancier work.
Pay particular attention to where the hands are placed during the braiding techniques. This is crucial in order to produce quality craftsmanship.
The book takes its information from the pros in Austrailian whipmaking shops. A must for anyone wanting to accomplish their own leather braiding.

2 out of 5 stars Don't forget your reading glasses........2004-01-30

I really want to like this book. It appears to aspire to teach advanced techniques, but only teaches the very basics of braiding leather. While it does offer some techniques not directly taught in other books, such as Ron Edward's excellent "How to Make Whips", those offerings are rather meager.

I had expected more from the US's best known whipmaker. I imagined that he'd cover advanced topics such as pattern work in detail; sadly, such are rare and only mentioned. The one and only knot shown suffers from brief instructions and poor illustrations.

Morgan uses a great deal of space explaining the basics, such as four strand round braid, illustrated with copious photographs. The photographs are poorly framed, so that the important details of which strand goes where are lost. These would be much improved by cropping most of the hands at work out, retaining only the process in progress. I needed a 5x magnifier to see the details; expect to need something similar if your eyes don't resolve small details well.

The book is not without merit: it covers some areas only touched on elsewhere, such as back braiding, changing from round to flat braid, laying out a hide for stranding, and similar tidbits. His section on assessing a hide is excellent.

It will help anyone with a knowledge of braiding basics to put a very fine edge on their work, but as a standalone primer, its deficits are glaring.

                    Book Description

In this month-by-month memoir, poet Jenny Joseph captures the smells and senses of her English garden. This unconventional viewpoint is expressed through Joseph's sharp observations and the sensual awareness in her poetry, combined with the energy of her descriptive writing. Also reflected is a sense of humor that sends up those in society who make one anxious about failing to live as the trendsetters dictate. Full of delicious diversions that lead readers off the straight and narrow path to smell the roses, this is a fascinating glimpse of a poet's daily and eccentric life.

Shireen Dodson was on vacation with her family when she decided she needed to find "a way to spend some special time" with her daughter. What she did was start a mother-daughter book club. In this sweet little book, Dodson offers practical advice about starting a similar club. The heart of the book, though, is in the insights she offers about the benefits--the chance to explore ideas and feelings, to discuss each other's lives, and to establish what Dodson calls a "bridge of sharing" that involves both mother and daughter listening to each other.

Combining the practical with the personal, The Mother-Daughter Book Club tells the story of 10 mothers and their preteen daughters and how their relationships were enriched through a monthly reading club. With step-by-step guidelines, stories, anecdotes, reading lists, sample themes and related activities, it offers practical instructions for starting a book club while encouraging mothers and daughters to learn to talk openly with one another.

At a key stage of their daughter's development, mothers will find a hopeful antidote to depression, eating disorders, self-destructive behavior and other problems facing adolescent girls. Most important, The Mother-Daughter Book Club shows that reading, learning and spending time together helps girls build self-esteem.

With suggested reading lists from authors and experts ranging from Kaye Gibbons, Joyce Carol Oates and Tipper Gore to Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Beth Winship and Ann Martin, The Mother-Daughter Book Club has the potential to inspire whole networks of reading clubs nationwide.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Resource.......2007-02-18

I think the reviewer that gave this 2 stars for the fact that it wasn't about boys completely missed the point. The woman who wrote this book started a mother-daughter book group and wrote about THAT experience. She also folded in a lot of great book recommendations from a variety of sources, along with many tips about how to have a successful mother-daughter book club. If that is what you are interested in doing or have already started, this will be a very useful resource for you. It will give you ideas about books to read, meeting format, additional activities and other places to look for ideas.

A friend and her daughter recently invited my daughter and me to join a book club she was forming. We have used a lot of the ideas from this book and found them to have improved our experience of the book club.

2 out of 5 stars Jumping on the band wagon.......2003-07-13

I thought that the book was going to be wonderful after reading the introduction. However, after reading the first chapter I realized that I was wrong. The concept of a parent/child book club is marvelous, but to assume that boys do not need it as well is idiocy. The author jumps on the band wagon that girls are repressed in the classroom and are in dire need of help. The book includes statements such as reading is "especially meaningful for a girl, because I think in school girls tend to be a little reticent and hesitant to speak up". PLEASE!! Give it up already! Everyone is sick of hearing about how bad girls have it. I have been in a lot of classrooms and let me assure you that girls are NOT afraid to speak up. I am a professional woman with a daughter, and I can only hope that I am able to raise her in today's society without her being warped into thinking that she is some poor child in need of saving because, without intervention, she is destined for failure.
Both boys and girls need to be raised in such a way as to bring out their best and help them reach their full potential. So, stop bashing boys (which is the implied undertone of the message) just to build up girls and stop implying that a girl can not be strong and confident unless she is as good as, or better than, a boy in subjects that are typically dominated by males. People need to realize that children have their own strengths and weaknesses and that is a fact of life.
Why can't someone write a book that is a little positive on subjects like this? It would be a lot better than this biased (and misguided) message.
                      Great concept, poor presentation.

                      Book Description

Newly revised and updated! The tenth anniversary edition of the inspirational book that has brought countless mothers and daughters closer together!

The Mother-Daughter Book Club is the story of a group of mothers and their daughters, and how their relationships were strengthened and changed by starting a monthly reading club. But it is also a practical step-by-step guide—filled with stories, anecdotes, and reading lists—that will inspire parents to start reading clubs of their own.

Shireen Dodson's message is a powerful one: Reading, learning, and sharing ideas can help nourish a daughter's confidence, strength, spirit, and independence. A reading club offers a mother the opportunity to enjoy her daughter's burgeoning mind as she moves toward womanhood. The Mother-Daughter Book Club is not merely about books. It is about mothers and daughters, girls and women, and how reading and talking enriches our relationships with one another.

5 out of 5 stars Mother Daughter Book Club: One of My Favorites.......2007-08-31

This warm, inspiring book offers perhaps one of the best ideas ever - creating a mother-daughter book club for preteens in the service of building a communication network for those tough adolescent years. In the process the growth among both moms and daughters is lovely and the suggested books on the money. It suddenly occurs to me that it's kind of a predecessor to Reading Lolita In Tehran in that it is structured around meetings of the group over the years. I've given away countless copies.
