Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Valuable information.......2005-03-25

Until I got about half way through the book, I felt frustration at the number of times I'd read the same thing...but in different places. This work should have been better edited for easier reading. In addition, on p. 44, there is a subtitle within the "Chakra Healing and Chi" chapter called 'Astral Healing.' This information was excellent. However, the prior chapter, titled "Distance Healing, Astral Healing, and Thought Forms" should have included the astral healing information that followed in the next chapter. I found this kind of disorder difficult to sift through at times as well as irritating. The writing is a bit simplistic as well, which didn't make for titillating reading.

However, by the time I got half way through the book, I realized I was reading something very special. I read many metaphysical books by many authors, but rarely can I "feel" the author. This book was different. I could feel Von Braschler throughout the book, almost his pure spirit emanating from the pages, and the simple nature of the prose and disorder began to become inconsequential since the message became most important.

His respect for animals is evident throughout the book. He is able to convey healing methods simply and with conviction, possibly even for the most scientifically oriented. One of the points I most appreciate is how he mentions that we must treat pets with the same respect reserved for people, that they deserve respect, that they are equally valuable, not beneath humans. However, he counters that in the process of treating pets "like people" we must allow them to be what and who they are; dogs must be allowed to sniff and bark and be dogs, not to become our dress-up dolls.

There is a great deal of valuable information in this book if a reader is looking to refine energetic healing skills. The author addresses several forms of healing through direct touch in addition to healing from a distance. He includes the use of extra tools such as crystals, stones, candles, sound and music. He also includes valuable illustrations such as the location of animals' chakras, pressure and paw reflex points, and the muscular system. These illustrations in one book are almost worth the price of the book alone.

A final note - a better title would have been: "Natural Pet and Plant Healing," for Von Braschler includes the care and healing of plants in his writing, almost as much as he writes about pets. With this title, it would reach more people who could learn from Von Braschler, a special person with very special energy to share.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2004-03-22

One of the hardest things we experience, is having to watch those close to us suffer. Using a healing touch is one way in which we can take an active role in easing our loved ones pain. But what of our beloved pets and plants?

I have never seen it before, nor did it occur to me that touch healing and other alternative approaches, can be used on our pets as well. In Natural Pet Healing by Von Braschler, readers are shown how best to apply the principles of touch healing to pets as well as plants. Since people and animals react differently, this guide is highly necessary to have before attempting to apply any methods of healing to pets, even if you are already an adept healer. The author is a trained energy healer who specializes in working with animals, making this a work of love.

Anyone who is a lover of nature, especially animals has felt the deep connection that is made between a pet and it's human. There are small ways that pets communicate with us to help us meet their needs. What we often don't consider is that we can communicate with them on more levels than we may have been aware of. I am guilty of spoiling my pets and I am sure most with a connection to nature's creatures, are guilty as well. It is not something we would consider changing. But what if you could be shown extra special ways to let your pet know you love them, or even to ease their suffering in times of pain?

Not only will you receive step-by-step instructions on how to use your hands and the energy within to help heal your pets; but you will also be given instructions and advice on how to apply many other techniques. These include, but are not limited to: Empathetic and Astral healing, projecting through forms, message techniques, crystals and other props, voice healing and so much more.

Throughout you will be treated to heartwarming stories, concerning the life experiences of Van Braschler as he has applied and succeeded with these practices. As an extra special bonus, all the personal profits from this work are to be donated to pet charities.

Natural Pet Healing is a must read for anyone who owns a pet. After you have read this book, you will be able to take your relationship with your animal companions to new and deeply moving levels.

Book Description

Baby Blues is the hilarious cartoon strip that depicts the perils and pratfalls of raising young children in suburbia. Daryl and Wanda MacPherson are a couple in their mid-thirties struggling to juggle work and three kids with hectic schedules-and maintain their sanity. Zoe, the talkative eldest, is seven and more worldly than ever. Hammie is the newly anointed (by the recent birth of baby Wren) middle child. At age five, he's a willing student for Zoe and a virtual Velcro board for blame. Wren is the newest addition to the MacPherson clan-so far, all giggles and sunshine . . . with a few clouds on the horizon.

Parents worldwide have delighted in this slice-of-life comic since its debut in 1990. Baby Blues has been a huge hit in syndication (King Features), published in nearly 1,000 newspapers in 24 languages, and read by 40 million fans.

      4 out of 5 stars Great choice.......2004-02-29

My Mom got me this book for Christmas and I have to say I was truly impressed! I have been scrapbooking for a few years now and I thought it was a very neat idea in that they give you direction on the how to's and then they actually include coordinating supplies as well. I had thought of using it for different years worth or Christmas but I think it will be more fun to make it as one Christmas Story. There is even a page for a child to write their letter to Santa in it. Any pages you chose not to use or the instructions sheet can be torn out when your book is complete. Great choice especially for a beginner but even a nice gift for a seasoned scrapper!

          Book Description

Snapshots of Hope is a series of reflections on hope, a timely subject in today's world. Written by an excellent storyteller, this collection features stories of ordinary people trying to find hope in the midst of chaos, challenging times, and everyday living. A little girl, a crossing guard at school, gets a spot where no one ever needs help, so she turns her job into one of waving all at the cars and welcoming everyone as they come to school. An old man who stubbornly sits on a rocking chair in his driveway in the midst of a flooded town gives the rest of the town's residents the courage to come home and start cleaning up. Hope, it would seem, is everywhere, even in the most unlikely places.

Told in a simple and charming voice, Snapshots of Hope will provide inspiration-and a few giggles-for its readers.

Webster's "Snapshots" is a masterpiece in ecumenical writing. It draws you in with stories that we all recognize as familiar and comfortable, and without changing gears, it frames and presents difficult theological questions in a familiar and accessible way.

As a youth director in a southern Episcopal church, I was looking for a text around which to build my Senior High youth program. I picked up "Snapshots," and after reading the introduction, I knew I had struck gold. Upon reading through the introduction one Sunday night with my Senior High group, these teenagers were discussing the relevance of the Bible in a technologically advanced, scientifically oriented society. Keep in mind, these were the same kids, who just minutes before, were throwing pillows at each other and ridiculing their friends' Facebook profiles.

If Webster can inspire a roomful of adolescent kids to dig deep into theological questions, such as debating the Bible's relevance as a rulebook, or an "owner's manual," or a history book, or a science book, or a church's bylaws, or merely a scrapbook of snapshots from our collective spiritual past, then just think where it will lead you.

Unlike other herb books, this book gives you a serious evaluation of both the positive and negative features of the use of the most important herbs for therapeutic purposes. Viewing herbs from a scientific standpoint, the authors assess herbs based on available scientific information and includes the latest details on advocacy literature and the new regulatory environment. Each write-up includes descriptive information on the source of the plant, its traditional uses, and an evaluation of the relevant and current literature which helps support or disprove intended use of the plant.

This new edition of Tyler's classic Honest Herbal provides you with all of the following features not found in any of the previous editions, such as:
            - the voice and experience of medicinal plant specialist Steven Foster, one of the most respected authorities in herbal medicine
            - research and information about cat's claw, celery, garcinia, grape seed, kava, pygeum, and wild yam
            - what you need to know about the latest clinical trials on many bestselling herbs, including black cohosh, echinacea, garlic, ginko, ginseng, St. John's wort, and saw palmetto
            - hundreds of new, supporting references from scientific studies on herbs and other dietary supplements

Containing candid evaluations and insight into the current and thriving herbal market, this guide also provides you with a complete summary chart that allows you to quickly access the risks and benefits of the herbs discussed. Tyler's Honest Herbal will help you distinguish fact from fiction in the world of herbal therapies and remedies and lead you to safe and effectiveness of these natural resources.

            Customer Reviews:

            1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2006-02-26

This man hates the use of herbs for health reason and this book is nothing but rubbish. If you are actually interested in the use of herbs then I would suggest you look into another book. If you are interested in spreading hate about herbalists then this is the book for you.

The title is definately false advertising. Honest and "anti" opinionated is not the same thing.

            1 out of 5 stars Insulting.......2005-09-28

People really need to investigate other herbal sources before holding this one in high regard. It seems like Tyler is more determined to be anti-herb than anything else, shunning even herbs that have been shown to be safe in numerous studies and years of use. He even goes as far as to be smugly insulting toward modern herbalists with some of his comments. Countless errors decorate the pages - or should I say soil them? - and there's really nothing I can say about this book that would get this taste out of my mouth. [...]
It's true we need to get the word out about this book, but not as a recommended read.

1 out of 5 stars Physicians and Pharmaceutical Companies will Love This Book.......2004-10-27

This book will appeal only to people who have vested interest in playing down the effectiveness of herbal products - such as pharmaceutical companies, physicians and others who wouldn't make any money if people didn't need their services any more and were able to heal themselves or maintain good health naturally through the use of herbs.

The title of the book is a misnomer. Tyler doesn't offer any information on how to use the herbs - as a matter of fact, from the way he describes them, you'd be sure he never ever touched, or tasted any herb. If you're read this book, you'll discover that there's no point in using any herbs because there are only two categories for herbs in this book: they either fall in the category of worthless or deadly.

Tyler does his best to downplay or completely disparage the effectiveness of every single herb mentioned, and when he is unable to prove that the particular herb is ineffective, then he states that even though the herb was empirically effective, there is no sufficient research to back it up.

The book is basically loaded with information on why you should not bother using any of the herbs listed in this book - either because in Tyler's opinion they are ineffective or they could be dangerous. And for the herbs that have been proven effective and were in use for centuries, Tyler states how "pharmaceutical industry" lost interest in these herbs. Of course they lost interest - how would they have interest in herbs if they cannot patent that are available everywhere? On the other hand, because of people's interest in herbs, you'll find shelves at your drug store loaded with natural supplements. Some people just don't want to poison themselves with pharmaceutical products (for that matter, you may want to check out compenium of pharamceutical products to find out how deadly side-effects of those can be).

If pharmaceutical industry can not make money, why would they still be interested? And to state that this book is free of commercialism, just "honest" herbal - what a joke!

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity." (Burdock happens to be one of the four herbs which have proven very effective in helping people heal innumerable diseases, cancer being one of them, because it does help to detoxify the body.)

About Chickweed, Tyler writes: "Despite the fact that it is prominently listed in almost every catalog of herbs currently available and also that many writers describe it as a valuable herb, I can think of no good reason to allow space to this worthless weed. ... Let's not waste any more time and space on the imagined medicinal value of this ineffective herb." (On a personal note, chickweed is a popular herbal supplement for weight loss...)

And, well, I can only suggest that you invest your money in some other, decent and honest, herbal that actually offers some useful information regarding the use of herbs. Do consult a genuine herbalist who is truly interested in helping people. Tyler's heart only beats for pharmaceutical industry.

1 out of 5 stars A book for those who'd rather stay away from herbs.......2001-07-05

Tyler does his best to downplay or completely disparage the effectiveness of every single herb mentioned, and when he is unable to prove that the particular herb is ineffective, then he states that even though the herb was empirically effective, there is no sufficient research to back it up.

Pollen is put in the same category as "peacock's excrement" and to "moss grown on the skull of a man who had died by violence". After listing some nutrients, Tyler states, "None of the identified constituents of pollen has been linked to any significant therapeutic activity as advocated by its enthusiasts."

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity."

3 out of 5 stars Honest, but disappointing.......2000-01-25

I enjoy Mr. Tyler's monthly column in Prevention magazine and expected this book to be similar in scope and format. I was disappointed to find that it wasn't; much of it is written in medical terms but I can't imagine it being detailed enough for use by a physician or phamacist. I found the book I was looking for in "The American Pharmaceutical Assocation's Practical Guide to Herbal Health" (don't let the title scare you, it's straight-forward) by Andrea Piece. I do appreciate Mr Tyler honest assessments concerning the use of herbs; however, for me at least, this could also have been a much better book than it turned out to be. I will continuous to enjoy his magazine articles though.

2 out of 5 stars An overly pessimistic herbal review.......1999-04-14

From the evidence presented in this book, Varro Tyler is the Eeyore (or Jiminy Cricket?) of modern herbalists. His reviews of herbs range from lukewarm to scathing. For example, echinacea squeaks by regarded only as "a plant drug that is deserving of continued attention by scientists and clinicians." Chickweed, on the other hand, receives such a bad review that you wonder if Tyler himself was ever personally injured by it. (In his review, he calls it a "weed," a four-letter word to most herbalists.) Generally, his writing is clinical and unsanguine. To his credit, he does present evidence that separates effective herbs from lesser ones, and most importantly, from dangerous ones. By his own admittance, he errs on the side of safety and conservatism -- too much. Equipped only with Tyler's book, a beginning herbalist would consider the healing power of plants with a skepticism and dependence on clinical data far too austere for the realm of herbalism. This is not the place to start such study, but it is a good adjunct and a devil's advocate for the naive and wide-eyed experienced herbalist.

1 out of 5 stars Honest? No way........1997-12-20

This is the most dishonest books on herbs I have ever seen, and I don't believe I will ever see anything to top it - unless Tyler exerts himself again, that is. He writes things like 'Self-treatment with hawthorn is neither advocated nor condoned', when hawthorn is one of the most benign plants there is; another of the truly unlikely statements is 'Unfortunately, ginseng remains a medical enigma with no proven efficacy for humans.' - this from a professor of pharmacognosy, the study of plant constituents? Tyler must not have thought a lot when he wrote this book, and he must have used his head even less when he proofread it. No, truly, leave this book where it belongs - on the shelf of the publisher's warehouse. Go buy a good book about herbs instead - you'll find there's a lot of them, but Tyler's aren't it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Medical Review of Herbs.......1997-12-04

The book is well written, easy to read, and it identifies what has been learned through repeatable scientific means about many herbal substances. In each case the active ingredients are identified, how they work within the body, and what they can be expected to do or not do. Suggestions about dosages are also given, as well as warnings when the substances have been shown to have negative side effects. He presents no axe to grind, does not attack anyone, but only presents the results of medical research into herbs in a clearly accessible format. The book has plenty of references for additional reading, and I found it to be excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The Best no-nonsense book on Herbals.......1996-06-06

So much bullshit about the use and effectiveness of herbal remedies exists that it's wonder how any sane person can use herbs as self-medication. This is probably the only book that offers a researched summary on the scientific studies into herbs and their effects. Well referenced, easy to read (even to a layman like myself) and debunks so many myths that most herb fans will be surprised. If you buy this, be sure to get the updated 1995

                  5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-10-06

I read many, many books on this subject. This was the best - very informative and objective. It was very easy to read. A must have for anyone conflicted about vaccine choices. GREAT BOOK!

                  5 out of 5 stars I get it.......2005-01-13

I don't care if it is slanted! It's his book, so he can slant it however he wants. If you don't like it, return it. Fact of the matter is, the information is presented in a way that is easy to understand, not a lot of medical terminology or political jargon tossed in. He's not showing off. I have two copies of this book because one is frequently loaned out to a friend. I wish he would update it. Pediatrix scares the HE** out of me.

5 out of 5 stars When all we get our lies the truth does seem "slanted".......2003-01-16

This review is in response to other reviewers of this book who are complaining that The Vaccine Guide is slanted. Next time you visit your pediatrician's office, tell him that you are concerned with the safety and efficacy of vaccines. After he reports you to the Department of Child and Family services, he will give you a brochure on how safe vaccines are. Notice on the back who wrote the brochure. It will say Merck, Abbott, Pfizer and such......get the picture? If you still are not statisfied after reading this literature, and you press your doctor again, you will see the real slant, and you will probably not make the same mistake twice. Doctor's as drug pushers and policemen today, forced vaccination tommorow, just around the corner.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed to the point of uselessness.......2003-01-15

The book suffers from three crucial deficiencies: logical fallacies, meaningless statistics, and a double standard of evidence.

The logical fallacies tend to be ad hominem arguments, along the lines that Dr X's research can't be valid because he had an interest in the outcome. Meaningless statistics include counts of cases with bad outcomes, but no mention of the total cases or of the overall probability of a bad outcome. The double standard is that the author attacks studies that were performed using scientific methods with claims of inadequate rigor, but asserts the efficacy of untested treatments: the bad guys weren't rigorous enough, but the good guys don't have to be rigorous at all.

The author doesn't support his arguments, and his numerous errors and omissions blow his credibility, so you can't just trust his judgment either. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview, but a bit slanted and now out of date.......2002-03-13

I bought this book as my main text to help us decide on whether or not to get our child vaccinated. As it breaks down each vaccine individually, it was very helpful for us to make individual decisions. I still go back and refer to it frequently.

I understand why the author included his opinion at the end of each chapter- its a difficult choice to make, and even though the information is being presented to us, we still want someone else to make a recommendation so that we don't, in the end, feel like we made an irresponsible choice. Nonetheless, by presenting his opinion, it might suggest that he slanted his "case in points" to help the reader make the same choice. It's very, very subtle, and despite this, I still agree with him on most aspects.

My only problem with the book is that it contains outdated information (even at the time of publishing). So, if you want to know more about the issue in a clearly presented manner, this is a great book. But don't stop there. Keep looking for more current information (although its hard to find- there are two new books out on the subject (2001) that I just bought to find out how they compare). The issue of thimersol is slowly being addressed and some of the more controversial vaccines like DPT are being replaced systematically with DPaT. The polio vaccine has also undergone some changes.

Be an informed parent. Informed consent implies that you as a parent should know the pros and cons of vaccines. This book and others present both sides, as well as a bit on why you don't get both sides from the doctor's office.

In the end, the decision is yours and yours alone. In making our decision, we asked ourselves (among many other questions), would we feel worse if our child had permanent complications from the disease or from the vaccine? That may be how you ultimately decide.
