Customer Reviews:
A must have for any bead collector!.......2007-06-27
A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.
Excellent photos, difficult reading.......2006-01-16
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.
Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners.......2000-10-29
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector. Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide. The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. I'm returning the book and continuing the search.
A stunning work of art........2000-07-22
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work. As a scholarly piece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in art history and world culture as well. It's an important book and one that would be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as one who's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for them when they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it.
An outstanding and invaluable book for all bead lovers.......1998-03-18
Robert K. Liu is one of the foremost authorities today in the field of collectible beads. In this book he gives clear and succinct insight regarding collectible beads from all over the world. In some cases he gives approximate monetary values, but the book is mostly a celebration by someone who knows as to the place which beads have played in cultures around the world from ancient times to the present. A necessary help for anyone who collects or is thinking of collecting beads. It will save time and money.

Book Description
Beadazzled by the beautiful beadwork of far-off lands? The rich mix of culturally diverse seed bead patterns found in this book will satisfy the young beginner, the advanced worker and the holiday giftmaker. Projects result in elegant, beautiful and surprisingly fashionable pieces of jewelry you would be proud to wear on any occasion. From Zulus to Guaymis, from Guatemala to Egypt, here are large graphic illustrations of the threading patterns for a wide range of beautiful seed bead jewelry, from simple Y necklaces to elaborate Romanian collars; several original designs are provided as well. This book is a must for crafters working with seed beads, providing many useful design concepts in its patterns for necklaces, chokers, bracelets, earrings, belts, pouches and headbands. The Methods and Materials section is comprehensive and full of useful hints for working with seed beads in general, from how to set up a workspace and lay out a design, to what to do when ! a flaw is found in a finished piece. Clear concise instructions alongside the diagrams ensure a good understanding of each project.
The book starts out with two simples necklaces, then zooms into space with starry holiday patterns for 10 minute earrings, a necklace and bracelet. Then it's on to snowflake patterns that show how to incorporate medallions into earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Next are simple chain link patterns that turn into beautiful flower chokers. Native American patterns for flower and leaf necklaces, as well as friendship bracelets and a flowing ripple necklace, follow. After a braided headband, simple daisy chain patterns are presented, along with showing how to turn them into wide flowery band bracelets and a daisy purse. Elaborate patterns for a very regal necklace and colorful Romanian collars follow. The last patterns of the book show how to make a wide colorful Guaymi collar, a Zulu belt, a Princess necklace that will enchant little and big girls alike, netted triangle necklaces, and a Moorish necklace of netted diamonds. A cultural cornucopia of jewelry truly to be enjoyed!

A variety of patterns gives a good overview of beading and the many different looks you can achieve.
A Treasury of Beaded Jewelry: Bead Stringing Patterns for All Ages.......2005-07-09
An excellent tool for creative beading!
Great for beginners to intermediates.......2004-03-22
I really liked this book. I dot this book near the beginning of my beading career and find that I still refer to it regularly to refresh my memory on beading methodology. It is an easy to follow guide that has easier projectss for beginners, as well as more time-consuming and difficult projects for the more advanced beader. I love these designs, and one design can be used over and over in different bead colors. As you become more comforatble with them, you can make your own variations and build upon what they have shown you. I definetly recommend this book to everyone interested in jewelry beading.
Great book for the first time beader!.......2003-04-04
This book has easy to read diagrams. The projects start simple and expand into a more complex types of projects. (daisy chains to wide bead woven laces) Great for any beginner!
Plenty to choose from.......2002-12-06
This is a very slender book, only 34 pages of photos and instructions. Seven pages of colored photos, including the cover, show an average of six projects per page, making a good number of projects to choose from. All of the designs use seed beads and other small beads strung on thread, with simple clasps added to the ends. Instructions are not included on how to add clasps, so you'll need to learn how to do that from another source.
The designs include a wonderful variety of necklaces, bracelets and earrings, ranging from sweet and delicate to large, complex, and dramatic. The cover photo gives a good idea of the variety of projects inside, and even if you just find a few that you want to do, it would be worth the low price of the book.
The instructions are okay. They are written in paragraph form, which makes it difficult to find your place again when returning to read them. I'd prefer the instructions written as Step 1, Step 2, etc. to make them easier to read, but the drawn diagrams showing how the thread passes through the beads are very good; they are large and easy to follow.
One little problem is that none of the instructions tell you on which page to find the photo of the corresponding project, so you have to look through the book to find it. To solve this, on each instruction page I wrote the page number on which to find the appropiate photo. Otherwise, I think this is a very good investment for people who like the intricate work with seed beads.

BEADS OF THE WORLD.......2007-05-07
THIS GUY KNOWS BEADS. A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK, AND PRICE GUIDE.
For buyers, not researchers.......2003-12-22
After 20 years working in Africa and collecting beads, I find this the best book of its type for people actually going into African markets, American bead shows, and flea markets looking to buy rare or collectible beads. It is not the right book for someone who doesn't yet know the basics about where and how the major types of beads are/were fabricated, how they have traveled, and the ethnographics associated with their past and present uses. (For those subjects, try Dubin, J. Allen, Liu, Picard, and Beckworth's Africa Adorned.) But for ballpark pricing, comparisons, and availability, there's nothing better in print.
Excellent!.......2003-11-25
I boughtthis book for my mom - she was getting really into hunting for beads (and buttons but that's another story) at yard sales, antique stores etc. She didn't really know what she was buying - just what she liked - so I bought this book for her about a year ago and she has loved it ever since. There are a lot of pictures, descriptions and background info on the different types of beads. If nothing else, it has provided a good foundation for her in her hunt for more beads so she knows a little more about the types/styles to look for (in addition to just what she happend to like)
I DON'T KNOW BEADS.......2000-10-16
AND THIS BOOK DIDN'T HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM ANY BETTER. IT JUST CONFUSED ME MORE
NOT SO GOOD.......2000-10-16
IS MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK. NOT ALL BEADS ARE PRICED AND NOT TOO INFORMATIVE.

Packed with lovely full-color photographs, the volume presents the exquisite works of nearly 100 supremely talented bead artists. There are pieces of very elaborate jewelry as well as vessels, purses, decorative accessories, wall hangings, and sculptures. Customer Reviews:
A great book for a certain type of person.......2007-09-16
I'm a pretty experienced beader, skilled in beadweaving techniques as well as wirework, knotting, etc. I thought I was a pretty apt visual learner until I attempted to figure out how to make a project in this book. I have read several of the japanese translated beading books without too much difficulty, but since these projects are a little more advanced (and rather unfamiliar since the techniques aren't as common in the states), I have to say I failed utterly with this book. I read it in a bookstore and decided there was no reason to buy it because the projects would simply sit on my shelf, never being completed. Frankly, I would find it easier to look at the photographs and attempt to figure out how to make the jewelry than I found it to look at the so-called directions and figure it out. If you have a LOT of patience for that kind of thing, buy this book. If you think your beading book should be an intellectual challenge, buy this book. If you, like me, think that reading the instructions should be the easiest part of completing a beading project, skip this one.
loved the book.......2007-08-13
I loved this book and I thought that the jewellery was lovely.
However, I would'nt recommend this book to a beginer, or even anyone who hasn't done japanese style beading before. As with most japanese beading books, there is very little written directions. There are diagrams showing the beads and thread paths instead. The thread paths are easy to follow, but I dont think that they are sutable for a beginer because you have to follow them yourself and there are no step by step diagrams
Romantic and Victorian inspired Beading patterns.......2006-10-04
This in one of my favorite beading books, I would not recommend this to a beginner, since you have to know beading techniques in order to complete the projects. If you are an expert beader, the instructions are easy to understand and follow. It is also mostly diagrams so if you are not superb at following visual instruction you'll definitely feel frustrated. I am lucky since I am superb at both diagram and word instructions.
Art of Antigue Beading.......2005-09-13
Love this book!! Not only is it filled with beautiful and unique designs, the directions are so clear and easy to follow.
Not what I was hoping for..........2005-07-02
I checked this book out from the library because I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it or not. Thank goodness I didn't buy it. The photos were gorgeous, but when I turned to the back of the book, the instructions were terrible. They're all diagrams with little or no worded instructions. I found it very difficult to figure out where to begin half of the time. Some of the easier projects like the wavy choker looked pretty simple to follow, but other than that, you need to be very good at reading diagrams. Not only are they hard to read, but the illustration are very tiny.
I'll probably just copy a few of the diagrams and pictures that I like and return it to the library. I would not reccomend this book to those who are beginning beaders. Even if you are an advanced beader, you still may have trouble with the tiny diagrams. I would most definately reccomend checking this book out from the library to see if you like it.
Book Description
Brazil once enjoyed a near monopoly in rubber when that commodity was gathered in the wild. By 1913, however, cultivated rubber from Southeast Asia swept the Brazilian gathered product from the market. In this innovative study, Warren Dean demonstrates that environmental factors have played a key role in the many failed attempts to once again produce a significant rubber crop in Brazil. Dean traces the numerous attempts to plant rubber in Brazil, including the ill-fated Ford estates, and others established by the major multinational tire companies. He also analyzes the struggles of the Brazilian government to foster rubber development, in the hope of obtaining a domestic source of supply for national industries that are now dependent on imports from Southeast Asia.
