    Product Description

From the Publisher Why won't Friskie play on the expensive cat tree I just bought her? How can I help Quincy lose a little weight? Is there a way to get Sami to stop scratching the sofa? If you're a cat owner with questions, Dear Tabby has the answers, and they're all right here in letters that are as witty, readable, and pertinent as any good advice column. Have you ever looked a feline in the face and wondered what she was thinking and how you can get her to understand you? According to that wisest of felines, Dear Tabby, cats have as many good reasons for their behavior as we have for ours-it's simply a matter of understanding how they think. Did you know that Socks might be scattering her cat litter around because she can't stand its perfumey scent? That Jellybean would be more energetic if his cat food had a higher protein content? That moving the cat tree next to the window will suddenly make that $200 investment look much more enticing to Mrs. Claws? As offbeat and entertaining as it is wise, Every Cat's Survival Guide to Living with a Neurotic Owner is the perfect book for all you conscientious cat owners who have ever bought a cat care manual but couldn't bring yourselves to read it. You'll read this one with pleasure, and your furry friend will purr with contentment at the results.

Every Cat's Survival Guide to Living With a Neurotic Owner won the Tidy Cats® Feline Behavior Award presented for the best entry in the 2004 CWA Comunications Contest on the subject of feline behavior, and the 2004 CWA Muse Medallion for best book about feline behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a terrific book!.......2005-04-03

This book is a great book on cat behavior. If you want a humorous guide to understanding what makes your cat tick, "Dear Tabby" has all the answers. This book covers Diet and Grooming, Boredom, Litterbox problems, scratching, aggression, and misbehavior, and affection -- from the cat's point of view but aimed at showing owners what they need to know about cats. I read this book through and laughed at Beth's humor. She does a great job explaining what to do when your cat doesn't do what we humans think is right.

Buy this book! It's a great one.

4 out of 5 stars Food for thought for first-time cat caretakers.......2007-03-21

Although Milani's book seems to be more focused on purebred cats than shelter cats, the questions she asks are just as useful for people considering the adoption of a cat from the shelter or a kid at the grocery store parking lot. Adopting a cat is a commitment that can last up to 20 years or more, and Milani gives potential cat caretakers a chance to realistically assess how prepared they are for this commitment. A good read.

    1 out of 5 stars "Catstupid".......2003-10-26

I agree with the other reviewers. I checked this book out at the library to learn more about my favorite animal. I was disgusted by a great deal of the book. As a cat shelter volunteer, I can tell you that many, many wonderful pets can be found inside the shelter. Many cats end up there not because they were behavior problems, but because the owner didn't want to bother with them anymore, were moving, or got a new baby and didn't have time for the cat. These cats end up at the shelter through no fault of their own and deserve a great home. I shudder to think of how many naive readers would look at this book and automatically think breeder=good cat, and shelter=bad cat. Perhaps the vet should spend some time volunteering at a shelter herself before she makes such blanket statements. I also found it interesting that the only comment she makes on declawing is a positive one and mentions nothing about the cruel procedure it actually is. A truly informed veternarian would present both sides of the story and be honest about the details. (Of course, she makes more money when cats are brought in to be declawed, so it's not surprising she would keep quiet on the truth on this procedure!) Read this book if you would like to learn how to be CATSTUPID...otherwise, I recommend passing it by.

    1 out of 5 stars CatSmart, OwnerStupid?.......1999-09-27

Would you take your pet to a veterinarian who seemed to care little about cats? Then read this book.

Other reviewers have mentioned many of _CatSmart_'s flaws, so I won't repeat them here, but I will add a few. First, Milani seems to believe that cats, as a rule, should be allowed outside (and she gives her own free roam). I have yet to hear of a veterinarian or other animal professional who would, in all seriousness, recommend this! Cats face very real dangers outside, and making the choice to allow them out is almost certainly making the choice to give them a shorter lifespan. I could find no mention in the book of the pros and cons of sending cats outdoors.

Second, as others have pointed out, she strongly recommends buying only purebred cats from reputable breeders. She asserts that cats from shelters invariably have behavioral problems (as if purebred cats never do?); and she implies that "so-called 'no-kill' shelters" are even worse than the standard kind, since they couldn't possibly have the resources to adequately care for their cats. Thus, in two paragraphs, she brushes off the millions of unwanted cats who die every year - many of whom are perfectly healthy, well-adjusted creatures - and steers potential pet owners to buy cats only from those who breed cats for profit. To me, this doesn't imply that Milani cares a great deal about cats.

Aside from a few useful tidbits - such as tips on using double-sided tape to deter cats from forbidden areas, and reducing their intake of food by feeding them smaller amounts more often - this guide is largely useless. Worse, it may be harmful to the well-being of cats - which sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

    1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time.......1999-09-14

Milani's tedious, boring writing style made this book a chore to read. Her attempts at warmth and humor seem stilted and not natural. I also found the information in this book to be rehashed versions of previously released cat books.

I also fault the editor of this book for allowing Milani to labor on in such long paragraphs without giving the reader a break.

If you're new to the world of cats or you're searching for help with a problem, I highly recommend that you check out Pam Johnson's book "Twisted Whiskers".

2 out of 5 stars New Approach - Bad Format.......1999-08-13

Milani's book definitely had the potential to make you really think about your relationship with your cat. The problem was the format was so bad you ended up just skipping over the long, involved questions provided for you. The book has some really good information for new and experienced cat owners alike. However, unless you are really dedicated to reading the book, most likely you'll lose interest.

Below are the main problems I found with the text:

*Almost all cases she followed were purebreds. All sorts of different owners, but only purebred cats. She fails to take into account that 90% of cat owners own mixed-breed cats.

*She presents the mixed breed cat as inferior to a purebred and states the view that cats adopted from a shelter rather than bought from a breeder have more behavioral and psychological problems. The short amount of time she spent on animal shelters was merely to warn people not to adopt an animal there. The author claimed that the animals end up there because they have behavioral problems. She also states that most cats in shelters have litterbox problems. She gives no data to back up these sweeping statements, and in fact the number one reason animals end up in shelters is OWNER PROBLEMS (moving, allergic, costs too much).

*The format of the book was hard to read. Lots of information was packed into long paragraphs with no illustrations, charts or graphs. With a better layout the good information she provides could be noted rather than passed over.

Living with Big Cats is one of the most informative and entertaining books we have ever read! 5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read about an topic not often covered.......1997-11-18

      Sideroad Health columnist Shara Rendell-Smock
certainly has a way with words!
Though I thought her column was informative, I
was really intrigued to learn she had written
      a book about tiger training.
      I couldn't resist buying it. . .and I'm glad I did!
      It's a really fascinating behind-the-scenes book
about a topic most of us don't ever think about
      - how the heck DO they train those animals?
(Though that's not the only topic they cover!)
The insight into trainer David Tetzlaff is subtle but powerful
. Definitely one of the most intriguing non-fiction books I've ever read.

Anyone know if she's going to do a book on Health next???

5 out of 5 stars "The Cat Book of the '90s," Circus Report, Jan. 95.......1997-01-10

by Mike Cecere [big cat and elephant trainer, asst. manager, Double M Ranch, Hastings NY]

This is the cat book of the '90s! Sharon Rendell has done an incredible job of putting together the exciting story of the Tetzlaffs. She's chronicled the legend of Col. Lawrence "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff, his wife Nancy "Safari Jane" Tetlaff and their son David Tetzlaff, who many believe to be the top wild animal trainer in the U.S. today.

Not many others have been able to take the nuts and bolts of animal training and make it a story people would want to read. Or adequately describe the years of devotion this family has given to the education through entertainment with wild animals.

Sharon Rendell also takes great pains to interview the leading trainers and zoologists of today to get the real story of what the animal business is all about.

This book is a must for all collectors and circus fans, as well as animal people. Especially important for anyone who is doing battle with the Anti's as this book will give you the facts.

Once you pick it up, you won't stop til you've read it all the way through. A book you'll read again and again. Good job, Sharon!

The price is a mere $11.95 -- a deal at twice the price.

Take it from me, it's a good read!

Now I can hardly wait for the movie version!

A gold mine of practical information--and a lot of fun stuff that I didn't know about cats. that makes good small-talk fodder when the issue of cats comes up--and knowing all this makes me evenmore glad that there's a fine cat in my life.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but not complete.......2000-02-08

Although this book does contain some useful tips on cat care, I found that at least a third of the book was devoted to cat trivia and cute cat facts, including an entire chapter on famous cats through history. While these chapters are entertaining, I was looking for more basic information. The practical "how to" type information that I expected from a "complete guide" was far too brief and general.

              5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book!.......2007-03-08

The author and her technique were featured on an episode of Simply Quilts. I ordered the book immediately and have already made the double pagoda wall hanging and lap quilt. They were both so easy to make and the result was more than I hoped for. I'm already planning on making a queen sized double pagoda for my bed. The book takes you through each step, provides clear instruction and I feel it is one of the easiest and definitely most fun and enjoyable quilts that I've ever made. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a quilt or wallhanging that stands out from the rest! Happy Quilting!

I'm a quilting-book-hound. If I could own only two quilting books, one would be Cutting Curves from Straight Lines by Debbie Bowles, the other would be Colorplay by Joen Wolfrom. These two books cut all the frustration, when trying to accomplish those eye popping wonderful pieces, that we see in these books. They are beautifully illustrated with great color on glossy paper. Debbie's book is the clearest and simplest book I have read on the dreaded curve in quilting. There is no time consuming pinning and I got instant success with my first block. I have little patients with written instruction and found this book really cut to the chase with step-by-step instruction. If you like traditional patterns with a contemporary twist this is it!

              5 out of 5 stars Fun Technique.......2004-02-11

I think this is an excellent book! The blocks were SO much fun to put together. After reading this book and trying out a few easy designs, my confidence in sewing curves has increased immensely! Ms. Bowles guides you thru her techniques in the first 25 or so pages and then devotes the rest of the book to creative designs. She shows you how to make a traditional log cabin design, among other designs, and give it a very contemporary feel and look! If you're very anxious about trying curves, give this book a try and see where it takes you!

If I could only have one quilting book this would be it!! I love this book!! I am one of those compulsive quilters and fabric collectors. I have numerous quilting books and take many out of the library. I have been making quilts for almost 30 years.

I signed up to take 2 workshops from the author and this book was included on the materials list. The book's instructions are so clear that I am not sure that I need to take the classes. I plan to take them anyway since I really want to meet Debbie Bowles.

I couldn't wait to make a curved quilt block. I completed two pagoda blocks in less than one hour and then spent the next hour praising myself.

Debbie Bowles really encourages you to experiment with color and patterns and provides excellent guidence and encouragement. I am pretty talented and adventurous with color but was astonished at the terrific results I have achieved from these techniques even with mediocre fabrics.

I also purchased her other book, Dancing Quilts from Straight Pieces and am looking forward to trying this technique as well. (but I like Cutting Curves better).

                  Book Description

The institution of the family changed hugely during the course of the Twentieth Century. In this major new work, Göran Therborn provides a global history and sociology, and a comparative political analysis of the family as an institution, focusing on three dimensions of family relations: on the rights and powers of fathers and husbands; on marriage, cohabitation, and extra-marital sexuality; and on fertility and birth-control. Therborn's empirical analysis uses a multi-disciplinary approach to show how the major family systems of the world have been formed and developed. His truly global scope covers the family in:

                  * Europe and the New World of America and Australia
                  * West Asia/North Africa
                  * South and East Asia
                  * Sub-Saharan Africa
                  * Creole America and Southeast Asia.

Therborn concludes by assessing what changes the family might see during the next century. This book will be essential reading for anybody with an interest in either the sociology of the history of the family.
