Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2006-04-17
This book had lots of good information on live bearers. I think it's an excellent source to start out with. If you are looking for very specific information, this may not be the book for you. I was really looking for some Platy specific requirements that don't necessarily include breeding, and other than a short paragraph, there wasn't hardly any information tuned especially for Platys. That being said, It's a great starting place for breeding live bearers. The pictures of Guppies & Mollies were lovely. The fish illness discriptions were well written. But you should not use this as your sole source of information on these types of fish.
Mollies.......2006-03-22
This book was helpful, but did not have as much on Mollies as I hoped. It still is packed with lots of good information.
Book surpassed my expectations.......2005-10-26
This book was helpful for me, as I am learning how to breed and care for mollies, guppies, and platys. It was useful in identifying and treating diseases, perfecting my tank, and recognizing the sexes and different types of live bearing fish. The photos are also spectacular
Better can be found.......2005-03-02
If you are a new fish keeper don't buy this book for the setup tips. If you are looking for a book about live-bearers the sections about specific species are good and can be helpful but the other sections on care and aquarium setup are lacking.
I would suggest a more comprehensive book that can be used as they advance through the hobby. I've seen several more comprehensive guides to get someone started, and I've found the Aquarium Atlas series by Baensch to be helpful in species selection and even the sections on setup and equipment are good.
CONCLUSION:
Buy this book for the info on live bearers, if you want info on other aspects of fishkeeping as well, look elsewhere.
Fantastic.......2000-12-07
I am an amature, first time fish owner and I found this book to have everything I needed to raise healthy happy guppies, mollies and platys. I would highly recommend it. The author explains everything in easy to understand terms. You'll have no trouble raising your fish to be as healthy and happy as mine.

Coffee Table Species Book.......2002-03-22
This is a LARGE HEAVY book, with high gloss pages and many photos. Great species book with good commentary - though dated. Should be on the bookshelf of all livebearer hobbyists. General hobbyists who likelivebearers can just use the Baensch Atlases.

Good, but not great........2006-05-16
Good starting point if you are into livebeares.
The issues are not dealt with in depth. There is somehow a disconect between the title of the sections and their content, which makes it hard to find things that you read afterwards.
The style is more romantic than scientific.
If you are looking for specific, advanced info, look elsewhere.
The pictures are very nice!

A Must for Livebearer Fans.......2002-11-24
This superb little book is in a class of its own.
Although it doesn't cover all the livebearing aquarium fishes, and does in fact have photos of species of fishes not discussed in the main text, however, it has a very detailed coverage for Goodeidae, Jenysinidae, and Anabelops (the 4 eye livebearer). To find good discussions of these livebearers are few and far between in even many good quality aquarium texts.
The knowledge of the author is superb and the book is an enjoyable reading for those who wants to get a good grounding in the livebearers. Definitely a very unique little book in its own rare class.
Have Amazon find this picture-filled good book for you.......1999-12-12
This book is a solid little survey of the livebearing aquarium fishes, supported by numerous photos. Attention is given to the out of favor species, while the author avoids the "isn't this a weird one" approach to fish reportage. So many wonderful cultivars in the livebearing species are taken for granted, for the ironic reasons that they are grand, colorful, easy aquarium fish! I would have liked a little more wild guppy and miniature livebearer coverage, but this book is the goods--real hobbyist stuff, in an attractive format, with little fluff.

The lovely painterly effect of watercolor quilts appeals to many quilters, but the technique is generally quite labor-intensive and time-consuming. Dina Pappas has refined a method that greatly simplifies the process, and her book explains it all clearly. Her secret is gridded fusible interfacing (bought with a printed grid or penciled on), on which the fabric squares are laid out and fused on; the whole piece is then folded on the grid lines and stitched. Not only does this greatly simplify and speed up the procedure, but it also allows for easy rearrangement of the layout before fusing; it also prevents quilters from accidentally rotating or mixing up the squares when stitching them together. The other element that makes this approach so easy entails keeping the designs fairly simple and small, though the technique can certainly be adapted to larger, more complex designs as quilters become more comfortable with the system. Pappas includes a good general overview of quilting basics, and the 13 step-by-step projects let newcomers practice the method under her tutelage before branching out on their own. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Easy Method!.......2006-03-12
The fuse, fold and stitch method of quilting can be used to make quilts other than watercolor. The seams are perfect and all corners match beautifully. This is one method of quilting that you must try.
Wonderful!.......2006-01-31
I have now made 2 wallhangings from this book. Easy-to-follow instructions made putting these together a breeze. I had only been quilting just under a year when I attempted these. My fellow quilters were quite impressed and even borrowed the book from me. I saw this book with a demonstration on a TV quilting show. I just saw a second book which I intend to buy very soon. Happy Quilting!
Goal-directed, on-a-mission watercolor quilts made easy.......2004-03-04
I have and have read a bunch of watercolor/colorwash/impressionist quilt books. My head is swimming with theory. They all begin with color and pattern theory (and they are all different) with levels and layers of categories, and when you think you've got it, you haven't. By being very specific and limited, this book enables you to take off on your own successfully. I think it is a better springboard for your own creativity - and initial success as opposed to hits with misses - than the more technically difficult and detailed. They are all beautiful but to actually see one and reproduce it successfully, I'd have to say this is the book to go with, and then go on to the more elaborate ones if you want.
The Best Book for New Quilters.......2004-01-17
I've never bought a book on quilting before but just *had* to have this one, and I'm glad I did! I used Dina's method of quilting for making a lovely three heart wall hanging, but never thought I was capable of making a whole quilt. Well, that all changed when I read Quick Watercolor Quilts. The author does such a great job of explaining no stitch quilting. Even a novice like me can enjoy quilting with this book as a guide! So many of my freinds have asked to borrow my copy, I'm picking up another one just to loan out! I can't wait to read Pappas' other books! Thanks so much for your insight Dina--you're on my all time favorites list!
Makes Quilting Easy.......2003-02-08
My grandmother loved to quilt and I remember hours spent watching her make these fabulous pieces of art. Since her death, I have regretted not having joined her in her creative endeavor, and found this book to be not only informative but it helped take the struggle out of this art. I finished my first one, now onto my second. Great book!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.
Book Description
With colorful photographs of more than 400 plants, this comprehensive treatment of the selection and care of seaside plants will be welcomed eagerly by gardeners from Virginia to south Texas.
As more and more of the nation's population moves to waterfront property, and as coastal construction surges, legions of business and residential owners have discovered the challenges of coastal gardening. Plants that might thrive inland often decline and eventually die. Though salinity is the most common and most hostile environmental stress, gardeners also battle poor soil, drought and downpours, high winds, humidity, and heat, not to mention occasionally freezing temperatures.
Robert J. Black and Edward F. Gilman tell gardeners how to conquer these hurdles and establish aesthetic and functional plants that can adapt to a coastal site. Beginning with basic gardening precepts, they present step-by-step information on specific plants, planting, best landscape uses, cultural needs, and plant maintenance. They address watering, fertilization, pruning, and other care concerns of salt tolerant plants.
This guidebook will be indispensable for all southern coastal homeowners, landscape architects, landscape designers and installers, landscape maintenance personnel, retail nursery personnel, extension agents, and for inland gardeners who face problems that result from salt water intrusion. Compact and handy, it will help them plan, plant, and maintain a beautiful seaside landscape.
