5 out of 5 stars A book to grow with!.......2005-05-17

This books title says it all SIMPLY beautiful sweaters. It has 2 things that are essential to the new knitter. 1. Full sweater laid out so you can actually see the end result top to bottom, unlike many pattern books where you only see a small part of the sweater or the model is in a position so you don't get the full effect. 2. Actual pattern piece measured at each area, so no wondering about the final fit.
This book has been a favorite of my new knitting friends because they are always pleased with the final product, no surprises and for first sweaters, the directions are very clear. I have been knitting for over 20 years and I use this book more than any other. I can take the basic pattern shapes, change a few things, add cables etc and design my own sweater that I am sure will fit when finished. By far some of the best basics availible...RECOMMENDED for all knitters.

1 out of 5 stars Over Priced.......2003-08-10

I like to buy books that are worth their weight in gold.. not just now, but two or even three years from now. I like books with techniques I can refer back to or a design that I just have to knit someday. I like a book that I can easily find the recommended yarn for.. and at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately this book has absolutely none of that. The styles are basic at best.. no challenge whatsoever. The yarns are "way too expensive" novelty yarns that will all be discontinued as yarn trends change. If you are wondering whether to buy... DON'T! I sold my copy on ebay within a week of purchasing it.

2 out of 5 stars You can live without it.......2003-07-25

This book is very pretty and the yarns are superb and expensive, but most of the sweaters are pretty useless. There are too many bulky cropped thingies and patterns that call for all sorts of hard to find novelty yarns. The other thing which irks me is the insistence on peculiar needle sizes, for example, what the heck is a 10 3/4 size needle, and why cant you simplt use a 10 1/2?

Also, there is a sweator in a picture of the store that looks great but.....it's not in the book!

I bought this in a friends yarn shop as a favor and I have not knit one thing from it.

5 out of 5 stars A simply beautiful book for beginners to advanced!.......2002-03-22

This book is great for beginners to advanced. The patterns are written very clearly and the charts are excellent. The sweaters are knitted very quickly and easily. These are great when you do not feel like working on a more complicated design. Granted they do use "designer" type yarns. However, with the guage and yardage information they provide, another yarn of your choice is easily substituted as I have done with my projects. I highly recommend this book to anyone with the "knitting addiction!"

4 out of 5 stars Uses for this book if you are not a beginner.......2002-02-10

This book is an ideal first pattern book for a brand new knitter but what good is it to a more advanced knitter? Let me explain. (I have a year of knitting under my belt and three completed sweaters to show for it not including the one I am going to talk about)

I bought some very nice cotton worsted weight on a whim because it was on sale. I had no idea what I would do with it. Then, a special occasion came up. I had a dressy skirt but no top to go with it. Since the yarn was black, I knew it would match but I needed a FAST pattern to get my top done in time and the gauge was too thin for me to speed through. I chose the back button cardigan in this book and made it with doubled yarn. Lovely!

There you have it, this book is great for what I would call emergency knitting. You need a sweater pronto for a gift, an outfit, a wedding, whatever. Obviously, needle size 3 intarsia creations would be out when you only have a weeks notice.

In addition, the introduction is very informative and the troubleshooting tips are well illustrated. I agree, the yarn is rather pricey but then I feel that if I am going to invest my time in a garment, I should buy the best yarn I can afford. I have had a year of happy knitting as a result of this philosophy. And, the higher the quality of the yarn, the longer your garment will last in all likelihood. You're making heirlooms here! And, as noted earlier, it is easy to substitute yarns due to the format of the book. (I would not suggest a beginner going outside of the basic yarn "type", though. Cotton for cotton, wool for wool is best if you are not yet familiar with the results of changing materials.)

In my opinion, complaining about the simplicity of a book titled SIMPLY beautiful sweaters is like getting angry at a school course called BASIC English for being basic. There was no false advertising involved. The authors delivered what they promised.

This book has paid for itself in my eyes and I hope everyone will give it a fair chance. Remember, knitting doesn't have to be complicated to be beautiful. Happy knitting!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2005-03-29

I was very excited to order this book to start making a sweater for my boyfriend. Unfortunately the book is full of sweater vests and only a few simple patterns. You could easily find similar patterns free online, so I definitely don't think it's worth the $35!

5 out of 5 stars If you love color, try this book.......2002-03-01

I know the title says "Sweaters for Men", but women will love this book too. The structure and color of each sweater are lovely and the knitting is not too complicated.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring all knitters.......2001-11-03

Sweaters for Men is a beautiful book, excellent photographs. The directions are plain, clear and easy to follow. I liked the schematic that showed all increases, decreases, bind offs. I bought yarn at my local store and made a vest and have started a crew neck sweater. I will probably make two more sweaters from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great but EXPENSIVE.......2001-07-28

I got the book yesterday and my husband immediately picked out the cover sweater. I did a search for the yarn and found out that the sweater would cost $... to make. Other patterns use cashmere or pashimina which is also costly. I do like the schematics but I find it very boring to knit a seed stitch sweater even though the yarn is fabulous. Also, I wish they had included more bulky patterns. It will take months to knit a man's sweater on 8s.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointing.......2001-07-28

I love the simple patterns but the cost of the yarns recommended is really high. I know you can substitute yarns, but it's still quite expensive. Also, I wish there had been more sweaters on larger needles.

A must for nursery-hopping gardeners in the San Francisco Bay Area. Extensive listings of a diverse slew of nurseries (and related businesses), garden clubs, classes and other resources is well- (and amusingly-) written. Sidebars throughout the book hold forth on various gardening issues: natives versus lawns, why to use botanical names, the egregious chopping that passes for pruning done by street tree crews, and so forth. Well worth the paltry asking price.

This is a beautiful little book, a real jewel that makes providing a pleasing habitat for both our wild friends and ourselves an easy task. It certainly inspired me to add more habitat plants to my garden, and I reap the benefits daily. I especially loved how she put the plant photos on the outside page edges so I can flip through and relocate the information I want quickly. This book should also be useful for many people outside the SF Bay Area. Providing wildlife habitat is so important now.

Young Laurence didn't really where he fit in. He thought of himself as American, especially since he didn't speak Chinese and couldn't understand his grandmother, who lived in Chinatown. But others saw him as different in the conformist American of the 1950s. In this engaging memoir, the two-time Newbery Honor author tells how writing helped him start to solve the puzzle.

                4 out of 5 stars Brilliant synopsis.......2004-08-31

Lynn Hoffman is one of the leading thinkers and practitioners in the field of family therapy and systems theory. Her book is a gem even though some parts may be a bit hard to follow. This is not because she is unclear, but brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Family Therapy's Flag Ship Text.......2000-11-02

This book is a timeless classic written by the most prolific author in our field. Hoffman's poetic voice and earthy genius is the perfect guide to the myriad theories of therapy and change that inform our work with famlies. No social worker, psychologist, family therapist or other helping professional should consider his or her training complete until s/he has purchased a copy of this volume for their library (and read it). Educators who think they can train and prepare students without this text are short changing their pupils. Hoffman introduces readers to every major thinker and pioneer in the field. However, Hoffman provides more than a survey of the major players and schools of family therapy, she isolates the specific contribution each therapist has made to our thinking about therapy and locates it in the larger context of change. Reading about the evolution of family therapy with Hoffman (who bore witness to many of the developments she writes about) not only helps us better understand an important part of our own and our professions past, but helps us to understand why we think about families and family therapy the way we do today.--Jonathan Diamond, author of Narrative Means to Sober Ends: Treating Addiction and Its Aftermath; private practice Northampton and Greenfield MA.

1 out of 5 stars Confusing and Difficult to read.......2000-05-19

I found this book very difficult to follow and to understand. Hoffman's explanations are very long and contorted. Her information is good, but it is too much work to try to disect.
