They own their own land, have made new friends, and Corey gets ready to go to school. But danger still remains across the river in Ohio, where slavecatchers lurk, waiting to capture escaped slaves to bring them back to their former masters. Corey, however, outsmarts them, and brings his friend Mingo to safety in Canada.

nice and an interesting story.......2005-01-26
In the book Flying Free, by Sharon Dennis Wyeth, A boy named Corey and his family escape from slavery in Kentucky America to start a new life in Amherstburg in Canada. They were able to escape with the help of the Underground Railroad. In Canada, they get their own home and Corey goes to school. With the help of their neighbors, they were able to build their new log cabin. Corey and his family got jobs and started earning their own money. Although Corey was happy with his freedom and new life, he missed his friend Mingo who was not able to escape. Corey sent Mingo a letter convincing him to escape from slavery and hoped for him to come to Canada. Soon, Corey received a letter from Mingo informing him of his escape.
Mingo then arrived to Canada where he lived with Corey. The story is very nice interesting, but the author could have done a better job with English language usage (spelling and grammar).
Heartwarming story........2004-07-08
In Corey's first Diary, we learned about slave life, and the heartbreaking conditions they were forced to endure. Now Corey and his pregnant mother have managed to get to Canada, with the help of the Underground Railroad, where they can be free. Corey's parents find jobs, buy some land and build a home. And best of all, Corey can now go to school and learn to read and write without having to hide it.
But Corey misses his friend Mingo, who is still living as a slave down south, and writes him a letter encouraging him to come to Canada too. When he sees a poster with Mingo's picture on it, saying he's wanted by the slave catchers, Corey knows that Mingo is on the run and fears for his friend's safety.
Corey's family prepares to celebrate Christmas in their new home, but Corey is about to have even more to be thankful for this holiday. Readers will find out why, when they read FLYING FREE, the heartwarming story of people finding a new life in a community where they can live proud and free.
The continuation of Corey Birdsong's story.......2002-04-14
Corey and his family, runaway slaves from Kentucky, have finally escaped to freedom in Canada. They have now built a new, hopeful, life in Amherstburg, Canada. In Canada they own their own land, and Corey gets to go to school. However, they still are hoping to help those they left behind, such as Corey's friend Mingo. But, beyond the river in Ohio many slavecatchers still lurk to find runaway slaves and getting Mingo safely over is going to be hard. However Corey comes up with a brilliant plan that will help get Mingo over to freedom. The continuation of Corey's story is another great My America book. I recommend it to everybody!

Flying Free.......2003-03-14
Flying Free is a good book about some black avitors and aviatrics. It is good to learn about black history since it is about black flyers. It includes new flyers and black astronauts. It has some information on some black flyers clubs. I just wish it was longer and had more information and more pilots.

A vivid account of a remarkable woman........1999-03-13
Bessie Coleman's determined spirit and love of flying comes across vividly in this biography of a young black woman living in a time when surmounting obstacles were a way of life. From the moment young Bessie looks up from the cotton fields to see a plane soaring overhead, she knows she wants to fly. She accomplishes her goal and not only becomes the first black aviatrix, but a popular areobatic pilot as well. Lillian Fisher writes a well researched, refreshing story that reveals the courage and stamina of a remarkable woman. A must read for children and adults alike.
This is a well written book about an amazing woman........1999-02-10
This inspiring story is not to be missed! Bessie Coleman was an exceptional woman. The author, Lillian Fisher has done her justice in this lovely little biography. The information is very thoroughly researched and presented in a clean, engaging manner. Especially helpful for students is the glossary and fine index. The period photographs and other illustrations interspersed throughout the text enhance the story. What a fine way to become acquainted with Brave Bessie!

For years the talented folks at the Muppet Workshop have been turning out characters that are adored the world over. And it seems the Muppeteers are also quite adept at making friendship quilts to mark special occasions among their extended family. From this tradition has sprung Quilting with the Muppets, a celebration of Muppet characters and the humans who create them. Each of the 15 quilt block projects features a different Muppet, with brief directions for reproducing it in fusible appliqué. The quintessential furriness and dimension of the puppets read instantly in many of the blocks as shown, made as they are with fake fur and sculpted foam, but since the very basic instructions explain only flat appliqué, some readers may be disappointed. Still, the personalities of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Oscar, Big Bird, and the rest of the gang shine through clearly even when rendered in simple fabric form, and Muppet enthusiasts will enjoy having good templates of the characters. The book's second half documents about two dozen of the delightful friendship quilts made by the Muppet artists. --Amy Handy

Fifteen patterns to appliqu as quilt blocks make wonderful projects for families, friends, co-workers, neighbors, members of a social club, or students in a classroom to work on together. The blocks are compatible in size, so mix-and-match patterns can be devised as personalized quilts for any occasion.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2005-11-21
My sister got me this book for my birthday in May. I have some experience with basic quilting, but have never done applique. It is December now and I have made all nine sesame street character blocks in the book and they turned out GREAT! They were EASY and FUN! I subsequently taught my sister, who has no sewing skills, to make the blocks and she has made some of the muppet show patterns already. We are having so much fun and my 6-month old daughter is already fascinated by the bright, multi-textured characters on the blocks.
loved it!.......2005-08-09
I am in the middle of workig on a new quilt inspired by this book. I really loved the phtoos and the ideas. The patterns were not great, but hte book is a wonderful inspiration!
Mother of two toddlers.......2002-01-24
I bought this book a year ago and finished 2 Sesame Street quilts for my children for Christmas. The book gives a lot of great ideas. I did not use all of the templates that were provided but purchased a kite that had better scale characters to recreate. The stories about the quilts the author made are fun.
Sweet stories, cute quilts.......2001-05-27
Who wouldn't love Kermit and Miss Piggy? But the real surprise was the charming quilts and the stories that went with them. Not only does this book have simple designs that you can use, it is filled with a series of quilts that the staff of the Henson company has made over the years. They are not quilters, but they are certainly artists who know their way around a needle. They have creatively mixed traditional blocks with Muppet blocks for a series of Friendship quilts that will open your eyes to the possibilities in that traditional form. Even if you have no children, you will enjoy looking through these pages.
Perfect for Quilting Moms.......2001-05-11
The quilt blocks in this book are so much fun to make! Experienced quilters can use many different types of fabric to give the quilt dimension, but one-dimensional fabrics work well too. The instructions on applique could have been a bit more detailed, but they are probably enough for firt-time applique'ers. 15 blocks to choose from allows you to make a project of any size.

Customer Reviews:
This book isn't just for parents living in a big city........2007-02-21
I live in San Diego, a small town compared to NYC, and to my surprise found many, many tips in this book to be applicable. Julia and Kathy also offer tons of practical advice that applies to anyone having a baby who is conflicted by the messages she is bombarded with by corporate America - e.g., did you know you can do without a diaper changing station if you so desire? In short, this book is well worth the read!
Good resource for the resourceful and adventurous city parent.......2005-09-02
As this book points out, being a parent in a major urban city offers tons of possibilities for your children. Not that there is anything wrong with the suburbs, but there is no need to feel like you have to rush out to move once you find out a baby is on the way. You and your child can have it all in the city.
The book deals with such wide ranging topics as space (which is almost always at a premium in urban meccas), safety, entertainment and education. I thought they had great ideas about how to best utilize your limited space, with respect to both minimizing "stuff" and storing what you do have. (An experienced parent might not need it, but sometimes it's nice to have permission not to buy toys and such like crazy.) While they did comment on ways to minimize your child's risk from strangers, the bulk of their safety passages dealt with commonplace concerns, like getting around in traffic with toddlers. The book overflowed with ideas about how to entertain your child and yourself, from ethnic areas to festivals to classes to rainy day projects. They also had a number of websites where the reader could obtain more information about classes, activities and festivals.
The information on education was comprehensive, touching on many aspects of private schools, public education and some options in between. I had the definite impression that the authors were more pro-private than public, which is fine, but that is something that is only available to more affluent readers. However, it's hard to argue with the flaws they point out for public schools (e.g., a lack of programs available for the gifted). Again, they provide many resources for parents to do their own research in addition to listing several notable public programs.
This was a great, but not exhaustive resource. Also, this isn't geared to doing things on the cheap (not that it's advertised as such, but many urban parents, including myself are always looking for ways to save). I would LOVE to see something like this for each major city, but this is a great jumping off point.
Good info, scary perspective.......2005-04-23
While this book has good information about how to handle various city parenting situations, (dangers of Lead, Taxis... etc), I was stunned how the assumption seems to be that you want to pawn your kids off on the nearest nanny/school/camp ASAP.
wonderfully helpful.......2005-02-02
I found this book fascinating and helpful. They're terrific about how to go to museums, why not to feel guilty that you're not in a suburb (because urban kids spend more time with their parents, until older ages, b/d of supervision issues), how to deal with private school applications (including what to do in you're on a waiting list or don't get in anywhere, which no one else tells you), and just general good sense and good info. Their tone is not preachy or condescending. I found it extremely useful and plan to give it to all the new parents (or about-to-move-to-the-city parents) I know.
Amazing guide to city living with young kids!.......2004-11-19
Parents can never read enough books to help guide them along the difficult yet rewarding path which all parents travel. If you're having a difficult time solving a parenting dilemma and cannot find answers from family and friends...parenting books are a wonderful resource to turn to for expert advice and helpful problem-solving techniques.
One such resource for parents living in a city, is "The City Parent Handbook: The Complete Guide to the Ups and Downs and Ins and Outs of Raising Young Kids in the City," by Kathy Bishop and Julia Whitehead. This book is not only a wonderful resource for parents thinking about or currently living in the city, it's a "must-have" guide for not losing your city-parent cool! I never realized how much there is to think about when living in a city with children! Just a few factors covered in this book that city parents need to consider: childcare, home & neighborhood, schools, sports, and health issues...these factors are much different when living in a city. This book does a great job explaining everything for city parents, even when you think you knew it all.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- there is so much information! Besides all the helpful advice, parents will find numerous tips & techniques, mistakes not to make, and so much more! Parents will probably find themselves referring back to it often. Have a great time living in the city with kids...from 2 parents who have already "been-there-done-that." :)
